I have spent time in Southeast Asia and love Thai food. By Harrisonburg rating standards, this place well-deserves a 5. All the food we've tried was good. BUT, they will spice from 1-10 and if you ask for a 1 it will be blander than most people would prefer. Even those that don't like much in the way of spices should probably order a 2. By the time you get up to a 7 or more it's for those that like tastefully intense. The service is both good and non-intrusive. read more

I lived in Thailand and think the food at the Thai Cafe deserves praise. Not quite what you could get in Thailand, but here there is no access to the same fresh herbs, spices, and vegetable. Moreso than the other Thai restaurants, it has the range of dishes you would find in Thailand. Dishes are less spicy unless you ask but the taste is authentic, the food well-prepared, and most Americans would find some Thai dishes too spicy so they probably took that into consideration. Very tasty food and easy to order on their website. I enjoyed the crab rangoons and Penang beef curry. Very rich and tasty and you can select your spicy level (7 for me is perfect, but I like spice). I like Thai food and am generally not that picky about good Thai vs bad Thai, but this was not good. The Pad Thai was too sweet and drenched in some sort of gelatinous sauce. The red curry had an okay flavor but was watery, lacking much chicken, and the veggies were severely undercooked. I should have taken it as a sign when the server literally dumped our menus and silverware on the table, then walked away without so much as a hello that this place was going to be underwhelming. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years and it has always been my favorite. But since the ownership changed the food is not consistently good . I always get chicken vermicelli, but this time it was very disappointing. The chicken was under seasoned and the dressing (which is essentially rice vinegar and sugar ) was bland. read more

I'll never ever find another place as good as Thai cafe. I've been coming here with my parents for 20+ years. Love the relationship we've built with the staff they are such lovely people. You can't go wrong with anything in the menu. Whether you get curry, noodle soup, or any noodle dish you'll love it. The fried tofu, crispy friend spring rolls and fresh spring rolls are to die for. I came here for the first time based on YELP's previous reviews and I was blown away how jam-packed this little place was! We just walked in and found our own table, took the first empty one insight. We ordered a little hesitantly the Papaya Salad with shrimp for the first time and was totally blown away how delicious it was! I did not expect that burst of taste inside my mouth! So that was an excellent start! Ordered the Pad Thai with the combination of Pork and Chicken which I thought was a very generous serving! The food was served with the chopped peanuts on the side, I guess because some patrons do not like peanuts in their Thai food, I can't imagine a Thai main course without peanuts! The Pad Thai was good but not extraordinary! I am not sure but something was missing and I cannot seem to put my finger on it! I still thought it was delicious! There were plenty of spices and sauces on the table that I add to my exact liking! Towards the end, just before the billing, the owner noticed I did not get the usual Thai Tea that I had ordered at first when I got there, so I was pleasantly surprised when he quickly served me that Thai Tea FREE OF CHARGE! Now that is someone who is self-employed thinking long-term business! Just that one random act of kindness is going to keep bringing me back to this place when I visit Harrisonburg again! Good food, great value! If you're looking for solid pho noodle soup or takeout Thai, this is a good bet

Lo Mein was very good, Pad Thai had a strange flavor and color that I'm not accustomed too. The fried banana dessert was delicious!

The restaurant was immaculate and nicely decorated. There was seating for maybe 40, so not loud or overly crowded. I ordered the Pad Thai and it was like no other pad Thai I have ever had. No taste of peanuts at all and the noodles were mushy. It wasn't bad, just not what I am used to. The fried tofu was the best part. My husband had fried rice with chicken which he said was good but bland. Service was fast and friendly. I gave it four stars because I think my comments are more about my expectations than the food. read more

I love spicy food, most places never make it hot enough. The owner said he'd make it extra spicy, I asked for a 12/10. It was some of the best Pad Thai I've had. I was running errands and ordered to-go for my husband & I because neither one of us wanted to cook that night. We both got Pad Thai (me chicken & him pork), satay chicken, and fried wontons. Everything was ready at the expected time and was hot. The food was ok... I agree with other reviews that my Pad Thai seemed a bit bland & was missing something but my husband enjoyed his. The wontons were great (though a little chewy but I'm thinking that's because they were to-go) and the chicken satay was tasty. We hit this spot once every few months and haven't been let down. Service is very prompt, we haven't felt like we were over-attended, staff are friendly and have fun personalities, and we feel like we can relax a bit at Thai Cafe. Prices are reasonable and you get fairly good portions. I usually go with the Chicken Pad Thai and some spring rolls and when I'm done, feel adequately stuffed! Just the right amount for a good meal and I don't feel like they're cutting corners with the orders. I don't feel jipped on the amount of Thai ice tea that comes when ordered, which is a plus. I go here when I am on the go I don't usually sit down here. The yellow curry is amazing with chicken and it taste better than an Indian curry in my opinion. The price is perfect and you get such large portions it's amazing. The service is outstanding every time I go. When I go in to get my food or even dine in it is some of the fastest I've ever seen food come out. The ambiance in the restaurant is a bit dark and peaceful. the food is so good, i can't even find the right word to describe it. i love their special fried rice, maybe a little too much. i would not mind going broke for it, maybe i do lol. anyways the service is amazing! we ordered sticky rice mango and the rice was a little hard (we didn't mind) but the server insisted on giving us a new one! wow! speedy service too. the place is very homey and they have a fish tank so it's really nice. a little sneak peak of thai i supposed. this is my second time coming, hopefully my third tomorrow read more

I recently exposed my wife to Thai food. In Harrisonburg for a short visit and ran across Thai Cafe. She had the Yellow Curry and I had the Panang Curry. You have got to be kidding! If you like Chinese food - try this. It is way better with the flavors you can experience. They can make it spicy or not - your choice. The owner is awesome - chatted for a bit as we ate an early dinner (4:00). But, there were 6 or 7 takeout orders in the 20 minutes we were there.
