Indiana Memorial Union & the Biddle Hotel is a beautiful complex within the Indiana University Campus ====================================================== My son and daughter-in-law met at IU as next door neighbors in the Vinegar Hill Historic District. They decided to get married about a mile from the campus last month. My husband and I walked around campus at least twice while we were in town. The second time we took my cousin and her husband for a little tour. I have never stayed in the Biddle Hotel, but I absolutely love the Tudor Room for brunch. If you ever visit the campus I highly recommend making reservations for brunch there. read more

Whenever I am down in Bloomington I usually like to post up in the IMU as I am visiting my students at IU, it's a spacious place with many options! Starbucks, the Tudor room, the bookstore. If you beat the student crowds there are typically places to sit and work. Don't forget to check out the bottom floor with more places to eat, there is also a great little bar in the basement! Our daughter-in-law works for IU and during a recent trip, she took us for a walking tour of campus. Part of our experience was touring the Indiana Memorial Union, which is a pretty stunning building architecturally. With a limestone exterior and wonderful interiors of dark woods, this huge student union contains a hotel, a fancy dining room, other restaurants, a bookstore, bowling alley, move theater, and of course public gathering spaces and rooms for meetings, conferences, and performances. It's a very impressive building and one that I would be immensely proud of if I were a member of the IU community. And as much as I'm proud of my own University of Iowa Union, the IU one blows mine out of the water. I couldn't get enough of wandering around this multi-story building and occasionally getting lost. Someday I'd like to come back and try out the Hotel and allow myself to live here for a short time. read more

A board on which I serve comes to IU every year for a fall planning retreat and we are having more problems AGAIN. The person at the front desk last night seemed confused as he was handing out keys, then this morning I went out for a walk. I went by The Mix in the Union in the old food court at 7:30 a.m. where I saw steaming eggs, bacon, and other breakfast foods, but the doors were locked and no one was there. The sign on the door listed special hours that ended on August 10 with no current hours posted. I returned at 8:15 to find the same thing. I found an employee of Sugar & Spice, the little food shop next to The Mix, and asked him when they would open, and he went to check. He said they were setting up the register but that it should be soon. Another man staying at the hotel came by and said he had been told it would be open at 7:00. I am writing this at 8:40, and the food, while visible, is still unavailable. read more

I now attend a nightmare of a university, but I graduated from Indiana University as an undergrad. I did not know how to appreciate a student union or a student centered building of any sort on campus until I went to an Urban campus that is just as big as IU in population, but most of the students are older or commuters. The student union is an abomination at Wayne State -- but I would NOT have known this if I didn't go to IU for undergrad. I love the Union. I love the Biddle Hotel (the place I stayed when I was first checking out colleges as a wee high schooler). I love the Commons in spite of the still crappy food served. I love that they built a Starbucks within the union -- a REAL Starbucks (you have no idea how lucky you people are). I love the bookstore's central location and not corporately owned by B&N. I love that the place is so student oriented and run by students. Hell, I even love the UPS store (always there when I needed it most). I saw Christopher Hitchens speak in Alumni Hall. I've lounged on the super hard to get to patio. I dined in the Tudor room for brunch. I dutifully bought my books at the IU Bookstore even after they opened up another location. Quite frankly, the student union is perfect for all of these reasons and more. But, my friends, I have to tell you a secret. It's called "the South Lounge" and you can hear the Starbucks' blender whizzing from there -- but the South Lounge is really the nap epicenter of the entire campus. You have no idea how lucky you are to have such a wonderful thing. Warm light (but not too bright), not a lot of foot traffic, big comfy couches, huge arm chairs, an always burning fireplace, big tables .... just calling out for nap time. It is THE BEST PLACE on campus to catch a quick cat nap. And many many students take advantage of this place. I am ashamed to say I did not take advantage of the South Lounge until after I graduated. Then I finally, truly, became a Hoosier after an epic 2.5 hour chair nap. I wish I had a nap room at my current university, but I know when I woke up I'd smell garbage, have all of my stuff stolen, and one of the non-students yet permanent fixtures trying to crawl up next to me. IMU was a great place to hold a conference and training. The location can be hard to navigate for visitors, as well parking is scarce and high if you don't have a permit or validation. There is a lot of meeting spaces in the building. I love the character of the building in the inside and outside. read more

Perfect for a productive day of studying. The IMU has been a wonderful respite from being cooped up in my room, arduously mustering the motivation to get out of bed and finish that assignment canvas keeps reminding me about. I've been spending every day of the past two weeks studying at the IMU, and contrary to popular opinion, it isn't nearly as crowded or hard to find a place to study if you know where to look. Sure, the South Lounge or Starbucks is almost always full. But if you want a similar delicately-lit, mahogany-table, dark-academia ambiance, the Union has opened up its Tudor room - a beautiful banquet-style dining room with ridiculously comfortable chairs - for studying which in my three weeks of frequenting has never been fully occupied. Looking for some fresh air but the centennial patio full? The IMU garden that's nestled in the far-right corner of the main level that has always had a seat available for me. In fact, the Union has put up a tent for shade with some beautiful fairy lights that elevate the cheery mood of the garden. No matter where you choose to sit, charging stations are located at virtually every seating location - even the IMU garden where the Union staff have added an extension cord so that you can charge your devices while you study outdoors. Plus, I've seen staff routinely patrol the entirety of the union, spritzing tables with sanitizer and enforcing mask-wearing and social distancing. There are sanitizer dispensers at every corner and self-sanitize stations for you to sanitize the seats you want to sit at. Furthermore, there's plenty of options to get food: Starbucks for coffee (mind the long wait though), Sugar and Spice Bakery and the Chocolate mousse for dessert, pastries or faster coffee, Union Market for some snacks, the Globe for an exotic lunch or dinner and food trucks for a quick and fulfilling meal. So, if you're longing for some (socially distanced) human interaction and want a safe, conducive, motivating, and convenient place to get your work done, pack your bags, go to the IMU and finish those assignments. read more

Staff was more than accommodating. We actually booked last night because if our nightmare at AMERICAS BEST VALUE INN!! Room here is absolutely IMMACULATE. ( sorry for all the caps). Bathroom is beyond spotless, beautiful, and nice size. Bed is tremendous. Live this place. Coffee directly downstairs. Really well run place. Got lucky. Even though we didn't get a chance to get our money's worth well worth it. read more

I went to a wedding this weekend that was in Alumni Hall. I am writing this review based off of what I witnessed as an event professional. I work in hospitality and events so I always go into weddings/events with a different set of expectations than those who are not in the industry. I would say that if I had paid money to have my ceremony at Alumni hall, I would be very disappointed. I was seated in the cocktail reception space outside of alumni hall for a friend's ceremony. I could not hear AT ALL what the officiant was saying nor did I hear the vows because of the noise coming from the kitchen. Not only did I hear people loudly sneezing but coughing up spit and spitting... ALL DURING THE CEREMONY. To the point that guests were laughing because it was that loud. I could hear them filling glass goblets with ice and dropping pans/dishes. As someone who does this for a living, this is unacceptable. If someone books their ceremony in that space, the kitchen should be aware of the noise they are making (especially coughing up spit). Also, I don't understand why they were opening the kitchen door during the ceremony (the door that is inside that room and not alumni hall). It just seems as if they didn't care that people were in that room saying their vows on the most important day of their life. The reception space is spacious and I've always had good experiences in that aspect of events. Lots of different things you can do with that space. read more

What a great student union and hotel! I might be a little biased being an IU graduate, but there is a special place in my heart for the IMU. I once used to spend many hours a week studying and sleeping in the great rooms, and now I can return and stay at the Biddle Hotel during my visits to Bloomington. The union is decorated in old wooden decor riddled with art, plenty of couches, and a fabulous bookstore. On your next visit to Bloomington, try staying at the union. Prices are very reasonable and the location is unbeatable. There is nothing like waking up in the morning and hearing the chimes of the IU bell tower. Can't wait to return! read more

Love this Union... has a fantastic history, beautifully kept, amazing location on campus, and great facilities, eating, and bowling. It sprawls and has everything you need/want. Used it tons when I was a student and loved going back to visit. read more

The student union is awesome with a great location that is central to campus. It's a beautiful building and well-maintained. The hotel rooms themselves are adequate but dated and certainly a poor value for your dollar at$200 a night. The room is very basic but the mattresses are comfortable. I imagine you pay a premium for the location and ease of access to the rest of campus, however the price will likely keep me from staying here again. read more

Okay, the bad-- the hotel rooms themselves are small and dated and the WiFi, while free, was really anemic. Other than that this is a fantastic place. It is like a normal hotel with the weirdest selection of amenities (bowling & billiards but no exercise equipment or spa services). The real beauty of this place is the location-- right on campus. read more

Best student union ever! I am a little biased, I did have my wedding reception in Alumni Hall. There is a bowling alley, pool hall, hotel, restaurants, it has everything to keep you busy. You are guaranteed to find students sleeping all over this building. Tip: Get a MONSTER COOKIE while you are here! read more

IMU is so convenient, go express shuttle bus just dropped me off there so I can head to the conference directly upstairs. I was greeted with warm welcoming once I stepped in. Bookstore nearby for me to buy souvenir and food court staff were nice. read more

Stayed there many times , excellent location. Rooms are small and sparse but very clean. Location, location, location! Beautiful campus!!! Have brunch at tutor room, you will feel like you are at an Ivy League school read more

Never stayed here during my undergrad, but came back for a visit. A little pricey (about $200 a pop) but almost worth it. You get access to the billiards hall, bowling, cafeteria, etc. Things things do come at a small fee themselves and serve as a tiny marker in all of Bloomington. Who visits a city to stay in the hotel the whole trip? If youre only looking for somewhere to lay your head after a fun night on the town, there are cheaper options. If you need to entertain the kids, this may be for you. read more
