Awful food and even WORSE service. Bought a to go order for 3 people. Drove 10 minutes to pick it up. Drove 10 minutes home only discovered they didn't include the rice we ordered. I tried out this restaurant because where I live we have a desert with zero Vietnamese food that's decent. Let me start by saying the Thai pineapple chicken and shrimp cashew grid rice was decent. Not the best I've had but not bad. However.... Upon arriving, I explained to the female waitress that I was so excited to get an authentic Vietnamese imperial roll with rice paper. I said indeed, to know how the Vietnamese restaurant near me only serves flour, Chinese or Thai roll and call them Vietnamese when in fact, Vietnamese egg rolls are in rice paper. I read the description of the mperial roll, and nowhere did it say it was *not* made out of rice, and I had expected she understood everything I said because she nodded at length. In fact, I ordered three orders - one to eat there and two to go - so I could bring them home, as I live several hours away. What arrived with inedible. At first, I thought perhaps something was wrong with my tongue because I could not taste anything. Other than the fact it was a flower egg roll paper with this mush of about the size of a pencil in diameter of a filling, where I saw the remnants of clear rice noodles and gray matter. None of the substance appeared to be shrimp, it might have been pork however it had zero flavor. I even pulled it out and put a little on the tip of my tongue to quite literally see if something was wrong with my taste buds, and still, I could not taste a thing. I could only feel the texture. I was absolutely puzzled, and frankly, beginning to gag. She did not come back so I had to finally walk them up to her - with only one bite taken out of one of the rolls and say, "Do you recall I explained it length I was looking for Vietnamese Imperial roles in rice paper, yet this is flour Chinese egg roll paper and I don't understand what's inside because it's not what it says on the menu. Her response: "Mushy paste inside is the filling" and then she went on to tell me that no Vietnamese egg rolls are ever made out of rice paper because, verbatim, "no egg rolls that are fried are made out of rice paper because you cannot fry rice paper or the oil would ooze into your mouth and burn you." I was floored. This woman was working at a Vietnamese fusion restaurant and had clearly never had an actual Vietnamese Imperial roll. I said ma'am, I ordered Vietnamese imperial rolls for more than 40 years around this entire country and they always are made of deep fried rice paper. I would like these taken off my order and I will take my fried rice to go. This woman wanted to fight. She repeatedly said, "but we already made them for you" which I replied "they are inedible and I am not paying for them." She then repeated that Vietnamese eggrolls are never made out of fried rice paper. Only cold rice paper is used in Vietnam's to make the shrimp or vegetarian rolls. I then proceeded to type Vietnamese imperial roles on my phone and showed her dozens of photos of fried imperial rice paper rolls. She continued to fight with me, saying those are flour. I then pulled up recipes, and showed her they clearly use rice paper. She continued to argue. I honestly should've gotten up and walked out of there because I had not eaten more than one bite of food but out of respect for the investment they made in the shrimp and the fried rice I said, please provide me a bill for the fried rice and Diet Coke and I will pay and leave. Begrudgingly she finally did and I provided her a small tip. I don't even know why. If you were looking for authentic Vietnamese food, this is not your place. I then dropped into ChatGPT. Where can I find rice paper imperial rolls near me, I called ahead, made three orders of them, and they were delicious. It was a little further into San Jose, but the name of that restaurant was Com Tan Thanh and judging by the amount of local Asian folks inside, it is clearly the dive of you want to try. If you were looking for Thai food or subpar Asian food at best, that's what you'll find at Indochine. read more

I actually live in Southern California, but come to Palo Alto often to visit my older sister and her family. Whenever I come, I always make sure to eat here and it is ALWAYS wonderful. Today, walked in around 1PM, and ordered the #22 Spicy sour shrimp soup (Also known as Tom Yum soup), I didn't get a chance to call and order ahead, so it was a walk-in order and she had it ready for me in less than 5 minutes. 3.5 stars Indochine is our comfort neighborhood Thai food restaurant. They're quick, friendly, and the food is decent. Is it the best Thai food I've had? No. But it'll do the job when I have a craving. Their portions are also very big so it always stretches into 2 meals. I am a fan of their yellow pumpkin chicken curry and green papaya salad. The pad thai and chicken satay were okay. Their pad see ew is a huge miss though. Last time I ordered it, they used the very wide flat white rice noodles that you would see with chinese dishes like cheong fun and it is not good for pad see ew. It clumps together like one big mound of rice noodle. It's inconsistent because other times I've ordered it, it's been fine. When the food arrived, it had a strong fishy smell, making it very difficult for us to eat, as we are vegetarians. After calling the restaurant, we learned that both dishes contained oyster sauce and fish sauce. This was extremely disappointing, especially since they were listed on the vegetarian menu. There was also no option in the online ordering system to request that these ingredients be omitted. The experience was frustrating and unpleasant, and I felt misled by the menu description. I was genuinely disgusted to discover that the dishes contained animal-based ingredients after ordering from the vegetarian section. Ordered Pad Thai for take out. They use vermicelli noodles for Pad Thai instead of chewy medium size Pad Thai rice noodles. The noodles were all stuck together and it was like eating mochi. The taste was blend and it was not overwhelming with salt but it was underwhelming and forgettable dish. I cannot say it was bad but I expected little more. Paid $20 including tip/tax. For the quality, I was able to get two meals so the value was good. Service was average for pick up. The food was ready when I arrived. Ambiance was not concern to me since it was a pick up. This review is hard for me to give... This was a favorite neighborhood go to for many years. I haven't been since pre Covid, and wanted to give it another try. It was honestly depressing. I went for a quick lunch. Food was not good and the only other patron in the restaurant was listening to news on his phone at full volume. There was no music playing in the restaurant, so there was no way to tune it out. Not an enjoyable experience. I know it's not the restaurant's fault for this man's poor behavior, but I do believe there should be someway to let a customer know this is not okay to do. What happened to being aware of your surroundings? If this man wanted to listen to his phone, he should have worn headphones of some sort, I do believe a restaurant is responsible for creating an atmosphere they want to provide their customers. read more

I've frequented here because of its convenient location for me. I have alway enjoyed the food. It is consistently good. I think the pricing is also pretty good- not too expensive. Delicious food! Indochine offers dishes from both vietnamese and Thai cuisines, and excels in flavors for both. We ordered: 1. Vegetarian spring rolls: delicious, hearty flavors. We requested for peanut sauce on the side with it and they graciously provided it. So gooooood! 2. Vegetarian soup without mushrooms (contains veggies, coconut milk, and galangal): perfect for this rainy wintery evening or any time really - loved every sip and bite of this soup! I asked for fried tofu on the side since soup comes without it. Highly recommend! 3. Panang chicken w/ brown rice: I hear it was incredibly flavorful. We asked for spicy but it wasn't too spicy for an Indian taste palate haha! If you want very spicy then recommend asking for spicy sauce on the side. Service was quick and friendly. Currently there is only take-out service. We tried this place for lunch today as we were already picking up an order from our fav bakery, Misfit Bakehouse two doors over. There is a table at the doorway and you have to yell across to the owner/hostess? at the far end of the restaurant who is wearing a mask. So very challenging to hear what she was saying. Anyhoo, we went through way to many verbal exchanges sorting out our order. But patience to pay off in the end. We ordered Chicken basil with Rice lunch special (missing the spring roll the menu mentions) and the Eggplant lunch special with the $3 addition of shrimp added (again - missing spring roll) Total for two dishes was a tad under $28. But dang - they do give you a boatload of rice and the main dish. We had plenty for 3-4 people from these two lunches. Service was prompt - it took less than about 10 minutes and was piping hot and fresh. My eggplant and shrimp had a bit of heat and plenty of garlic. Very satisfying. The chicken dish was ok - but I found the meat a bit dry. Lots of bamboo slices? and nice fresh basil. Definitely worth coming back to try more items. I really want to support local and we've frequented this place every time we run out options. Came here again and the food was something akin to what would be served at a horrible soup kitchen. We ordered the Basil Chicken. Do yourself and don't ever order Basil Chicken. It was more like a restaurant sized can of metallic tasting bamboo with a few slivers of chicken and some sad Thai basil mixed in. There was probably the equivalent of about 4oz of chicken and 2lbs of shredded canned bamboo filler. Absolutely disgusting. Pad see ew. It was definitely EWWW. The noodles were clumped together, sitting in a pool of oil and flavorless aside from the heavy flavor of soy sauce. Avoid. Came in this evening, a lady was helping a single table and two take out orders. One guy left with his takeout, upset about how long it took. The people seated at the table left, the waitress helped both take out orders, then went to the back. Since she ignored us, we seated ourselves at a table. Another person came in to order take out and the waitress eventually brought us menus without greeting us. Then another person came in for take out, so we patiently waited until she was done helping them, then waved and asked if we could order. She walks towards the back and hollers at us, "you want water? Ice or no ice?" And we said "oh, can we actually just order?" I wanted a Vietnamese iced coffee, not water but she proceeded to just yell "ice or no ice?!" Sooooooo we left because wtf??
