Not a bad pho restaurant. I came here with my parents who are soup fans, and we each ordered different dishes to try. The soup selection isn't the most extensive (I think there were 5 or 6 options) unlike an authentic pho menu that offers variations with rare brisket, tendon, meatballs, tripe, seafood, chicken, etc. The broth was flavorful though the noodles and meats are not that plentiful for the price (though it is Palo Alto, so this may not be surprising). The service is fine and there are plenty of tables indoors that I can't imagine them having a wait. We had the vegan pho and fresh spring rolls! Delicious nourishing and fresh. What a cutie window table we sat at! We were able to watch the activity outside and get a nice breeze on a hot day. I got bamboozled by the pictures on the sidewalk menu. We were craving for popcorn chicken and didn't feel like walking over to O2, especially since Pho Banh Mi looked more comfortable with more tables and such. Zero wait time during lunch hours, but our 2-persons table was the only one remaining, located at the edge of the walkway. I don't think that spot was intended to have any seating arrangements. There were hardly space for us to get into the seats without moving the table, my seat was backed against the walkway where there was a lot of traffic with hot soup being carried in and out. If I don't sit still and crouched up, accidents may occur. We ended up ordering popcorn chicken (what we came for) and added on a Vietnamese chicken salad to counterbalance the unhealthy dish. You can definitely get better ones elsewhere, probably at a spot that is walking distance from here. If you have a thing for dino nuggets, you might enjoy the popcorn chicken here. There's more popcorn (breading) than the chicken. They're all of the same size, just like those frozen nuggets. They taste JUST like the frozen nuggets too. The breading was soft, just like frozen nuggets. As for the salad, the dressing was light and wasn't too salty. The shredded chicken breast on top of the salad was bland and dry. They had these wonton strips/pieces in the salad, I was only able to identify them by taste, they were so soggy, it's the same texture as you left your cereal in the milk too long. I absolutely loved the sandwich. The pork was well-seasoned, the vegetables were fresh and the sauce was good. Overall it was almost the perfect sandwich. My only complaint was that it wasn't clear to me that the baguette didn't appear to be authentic. Don't get me wrong: the bread was freshly baked, warm and tender, and held up well. The flavor was so fresh from all of the veggies and the sauce was sweet which I quite enjoyed, my partner, not so much. The inside is a very cute decor with plenty of seating both inside and outside. Two experiences, first visit. 1) Steak and meatball pho with egg noodles, one size only. Fairly standard, nothing amazing, nothing bad. Would order again. 2) With a name like Pho Banh Mi, you'd expect their banh mi to be their specialty. After finishing my pho, I wanted to order three banh mis to go. I asked about their #15, which was listed as "pate, pork roll, and shredded pork floss." Specifically, I wanted to know if the "pork roll" was the pink, "fancy" pork that other restaurants offered. Their newest employee didn't know, so I referenced two photos from Yelp--one from three years ago and another from nine months ago--both showing the same menu item name (remember there are no photos of the banh mis on the menu). I asked if these photos were of the #15, and the employee repeatedly said no. However, he couldn't tell me what they did use as "pork roll." I asked, "If you don't know, can you ask someone?" Unfortunately, the cook and the three employees present couldn't explain what pork roll was. The cook knew the name in Vietnamese but couldn't translate it to English. Since no one could confirm the ingredients, I decided not to buy the banh mis. As I was leaving, I noticed a stand by the exit with a menu on its outside window. I looked, and sure enough, the #15 clearly showed the "fancy pork." To the staff: it's crucial to know what goes into your banh mis. If you're not sure, then customers won't be sure if they should order it or not. What a shame--I was hoping this place would become my new favorite. read more

I only had an hour to eat and found this restaurant by chance. This would be 5 stars but I found the restaurant dirty. There were food crumbs on my bench chair and scraps of food under the table. The table was greasy looking so I used a napkin as my place mat. If it wasn't for my companion, I would have left the restaurant. I ordered the steak and meatball pho. The steak (high quality than most restaurants) was tender but the strips were so long that it was hard to eat - too much for a mouthful and no knife to cut the meat strips. Soup was flavorful and hot. Meatballs were seasoned well. The regular vermicelli bowl was presented well. It was enough for one person. I ordered the traditional spring rolls which never came, although I reminded them of my order when I was eating. The traditional egg roll finally came with my check. They said I had to take it since it was already made. I did not want to make a hassle so I asked for a take out box. I ate the spring rolls the next night. Solid place to get Vietnamese food. It's definitely a little cheaper than Pho Ha Noi down the street, but it's also not as fancy. The food is still good though and I like how they have many classic Vietnamese dishes. I like to get their Vietnamese pate pork banh mi. My partner likes their popcorn chicken. I also like their grilled pork with rice. And recently we ordered their grilled chicken and it was surprisingly good too I also like that this place's usually not too busy for dinner so you can usually sit wherever and order fast. They serve food pretty fast. We waited less than 10 minutes when we ordered 3 entrees and 1 appetizer. I also like how they have a utensils box at the table so you don't need to flag down a waiter for a spoon or fork. Also they make the water so fancy here! They give water in a large mason jar with citrus and add citrus and cucumber to the water cups. I like that touch. It makes the water feel fancy. Also want to mention they auto-add a 10% service charge on the bill. The inside feels new and clean. This is really a fast-food stand kind of restaurant located in the busy University Avenue. We tried the Lemongrass Banh Mi and the Grilled Pork Rice. The bun was lightly fried to add the flavor. All ingredients were good except the bed was too salty. The grilled pork was on the greasy side, but it's not salty but sweet as it should be. My order came with/ the drink and fries. As it turned out, the freshly made fries save the day. The waiter forgot our orders and came back to confirm. The waitress just couldn't remember that we needed a doggy bag for the fries. Stopped by today for lunch during the PA Art and Wine Festival. Scored a table outside. I don't think this place was ready for the influx of people ordering. It's a bit confusing because they ask you to wait to be seated and bring menus to your table but you actually have to go to the counter and order. Food came out pretty quick but they didn't have a very good system of knowing which tables ordered which food so the server went around with orders until he landed at the right table. Our meals were actually pretty tasty. Pork Bahn Mi was served on a nice French roll, soft on the inside with a nice crust. Popped in for a quick bite while waiting on a phone repair. The place was fairly empty when I visited (3pm on a Friday). We were promptly shown to a table and provided menus. The first thing I noticed, was the strong smell of bleach or ammonia. Although it's reassuring to know that the place was freshly cleaned, it's not the best aroma to be floating in the air when you're about to have lunch. Prices for the items seemed fair for the area and the sandwiches online looked appetizing. I was hoping the "special combination" bahn mi included all the meats listed but it's actually a CHOICE of those meats. If only I could read a little more closely. Whoops! So that through my original plan for this sandwich out the door and I opted for the less adventurous grilled chicken. The chicken itself was cooked well and was still moist. The toppings (carrots, cucumbers, and cilantro) all tasted fresh and were a great complement to the chicken and the sweet sauce on the sandwich. The sauce itself was a bit too sweet for my liking or maybe there was just too much of it. Luckily, Sriracha is provided on the table and it added the right contrast to balance out the sweetness. The water provided includes slices of oranges and cucumbers in it, which makes an otherwise boring beverage a little more fun. I appreciated that light touch. The service was cordial and efficient. From ordering, to the food delivery, to the payment process, they have everything ironed out and running smoothly. Always drive/walk past this place on university ave and always see people eating here and the banh mi menu caught our eyes. Finally decided to try this place out and it is eh. Nothing special. The vermicelli was ok. The pho was ok. The banh mi was sad looking when we got it. It was quite slim. Not like a normal banh mi sandwich. Not much meat just a couple slivers of pork belly. The fries were ok. The service was not the best when sitting outside while enjoying the weather as the staff were mainly inside and did not come out often to check up on everything. The inside of the restaurant seems like cleaner for the bathrooms. The inside was quite stuffy with stale air. Needs some air circulation inside. I lived near Westminster, CA (considered the best Vietnamese cuisine in the state) and these are up there with the best banh mis I've ever had. The bread is exactly what you want, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The pate, roll and shredded pork had this beautiful natural pork sweetness that shone through every bite. The veggies were so crisp and bright. Lemongrass beef is delicious on its own but I've never had it in a sandwich. The flavor of the lemongrass is strong but adds that herbaceousness that pairs so well with the deep beef flavor. The spring rolls were good but not much of a highlight and I probably wouldn't get them again. The sandwiches shine bright here. Since I don't live up north I might not be back for a while but it is a must try when in Palo Alto. read more

When I read exceptionally harsh reviews (like the one below mine... you know who you are,) I take them with a large grain of salt before I myself have had a chance to sample the cuisine, service, and ambiance. Never having had a Banh Mi before (yeah, what planet am I from, right?) I decided it was time, and went with the recommendation from my server: Pork Belly. I am SO GLAD I did. When it came, I added a large squirt of Sriracha on each half, and began mowing. Crispy/buttery hollowed out bun, of course. The flavors inside: mint, carrot, and a sweet/salty hint of fish sauce, were ON POINT. The pork belly itself: super tender/crisp and melt-in-your-mouth good. I could barely put the sandwich down long enough to take a sip of my Vietnamese coffee, which was also dee-lish. As we were paying, the incredibly affable cashier (also our server,) recommended getting the combination Banh Mi next time, which is exactly what I'll do. Tldr: everything is just okay here (both food and service). The safest option to eat is Pho (at least I didn't feel like I wasted money on pho). The restaurant decoration is pretty nice and cute. I liked it. We sat right next to the window so we got a nice view. We ordered 1 special pho, 3 different vermicelli bowls (#44 special, #47 fish cake and shrimp, #46b vegan). - Pho was decent, the broth was flavorful and they used the type of noodle I like. - Vermicelli bowls didn't get good responses from anyone in my party, especially the vegan one - my mom didn't even want to take the left over home. After trying it 3 times, I cannot recommend this place. Walk 2 minutes to Pho Ha Noi instead. The first time (~2 years ago): I came here for a Banh Mi per the name. After I got seated I found out they had no bread. "Okay, I'll try the pho", I thought. It was alright but nothing special. Second time (~1.5 years ago): Pho Hanoi was not in Palo Alto yet and I was craving Vietnamese food. There was 1 other table here yet somehow they didn't bring my drink out until I was walking up to pay. The food was still average, and the service left a bad taste in my mouth. Final time (today): I thought I'd give it another try to change things up. The new waiter was really nice to us but the rest of the staff was rude. For some reason they had us join two nearby tables into 1 as we were seated. This part was fine though we didn't ask for this. Somehow this would cause problems. After we began eating (maybe 10 mins later) they then had us stop mid-meal, get up, and move tables to reclaim the extra table they gave us (???). They pulled the conjoined table away. Ironically, there was no demand for this table as it sat empty while we finished our food. They didn't even clean it for someone else. I think the older woman here just didn't want us having this second table while another staff member did. Why make it our problem? Why not wait until we leave to resolve it? Between this fumble and them conducting awkward interviews a couple tables away, I felt really underwhelmed by the environment. To top it off, the people next to us left with nearly full plates on their table, and my drink came out super late like the previous time. The meat tasted freezer-burned according to my girlfriend. This place is a mess -- skip it! Go a couple blocks down to Pho Ha Noi to get better food and better treatment.
