Canceling Vivint was far more difficult than it should have been…read more A year ago, I was told I needed to pay off my equipment financing before I could cancel service. After paying off the equipment, I called to cancel and spent over an hour on the phone speaking with two different representatives. I was repeatedly placed on hold for 3-5 minutes while they returned with new offers to keep me from canceling, including discounted monitoring rates and replacement equipment through "loyalty points" that I had never heard of before despite being a customer for years. I was also charged an additional $35 for equipment-related costs that I was told were not included with my financing. Although my cancellation request was eventually approved, Vivint informed me that my account would not be processed for cancellation until 10 business days after notice was received. I was also told that monitoring charges would continue during the review/processing period. The representatives were polite, but the process felt focused on retention rather than providing a simple and transparent cancellation experience. Customers should not have to spend over an hour on the phone, endure multiple retention attempts, and wait additional business days just to end service.

With a 1.06 BBB rating, Vivint Smart Home is well-known for employing a large commission based door to door sales and high pressure, deceptive tactics. Monty, the marketing manager with an incredible offer, started off friendly enough. Then came the invasive questions. "What do you do? How many smart devices do you have? Who's your alarm company? How much do you pay? It's wireless? The WiFi could go down. It's wired? Someone could cut the phone line.. We have smart thermostats." I have 2. "Vivint is compatible!" Monty pulled out his fancy iPad which showed pics of him smiling with families, impressive flood lights that follow intruders, garage door openers, cameras, large HD screens. Everything but the cost. When I said I'd prefer to read the reviews first Monty pulled up the Forbes rating. All the while, he kept trying to come inside so we could "talk." After about 25 minutes of upsell attempts, he ball-parked an $80 monthly quote. I asked for a card. "It's virtual." Monty wouldn't email me or leave info so I could have time to decide. Finally, I gave him a fake phone # to get him to leave! Vivint has settled multiple lawsuits. Impersonating salespeople steal personal info from consumers to apply for fraudulent loans to increase their commission. Bad credit? Reps find someone with a similar name and run their credit or add a cosigner without consent. Then the cosigner is contacted by a Vivint debt collector! Vivint paid millions for tricking customers into signing high-priced, multi-year contracts that were impossible to cancel. Vivint charges more than the contract says, sells faulty equipment, won't produce receipts, renews contracts without consent, misinforms customers about their cancellation policy and charges customers after they cancel. If a Vivint rep comes knocking, do not answer or give out any information. Buyer beware!!!

Thanks, NorthStar, for making my decision that much easier to go with your competitor. UPDATE: So, does that mean you didn't bother reading my response to you (see screen shot of image I just uploaded from my reply immediately back to you). Again, you have proved my point. Maybe your reps are tied up bc they're in the phone trying to respond to all the negative customer service reviews, like mine. It took you *2 weeks* to respond and accuse me of "not responding" to you when I did so within hours. Nice. Second Update: I see Martha has retracted her comment to me on my review (hence what my first Update spoke to....now it doesn't make sense, but you get the picture of what happened). More proof this company doesn't "have it together." I strongly encourage those looking for a security system to look elsewhere, or at least do your research before committing to North Star. This company has given me the run-around and I'm not even a customer! There are many other companies that value your time and business more than North Star. I am a perfect example.

I called NorthStar, my security company, to see if they'd ever heard of these guys and they told me that "reputable firms don't go door to door." That reminded me that I was overdue for writing them a review. My husband and I (well, my husband mostly), interviewed four or five firms before selecting this one. Their installers are also their sales guys. In other words, these are people who know their stuff. Nobody tried to sell us something we didn't need. The guy who came out - and followed us through some installation difficulties (way our house was built, not NorthStar's fault) - his name is Gary. He is friendly and SUPER knowledgeable. He explained things and then explained them again and gave my engineer-husband all the detail he wanted. But when I had a question and DIDN'T want the detail - he boiled it down for me. Their pricing was similar to other firms we talked with. Pay for the equipment and have lower monthly monitoring, or do a 3-yr contract with higher monthly monitoring and lower/no equipment costs. They give you several options to work with your budget. Bottom line is, they weren't significantly higher or lower than anybody else. We had our first "false alarm" the other day. Our nanny accidentally set off the alarm and while she was punching the code in downstairs, my husband was also punching it in on the keypad upstairs, which cancelled the whole thing. Kinda funny actually. The monitoring service called us WITHIN TWO MINUTES. I was glad to know they were on the ball just in case we need them for real some day. In the end, we went with this firm because they were the most knowledgeable, didn't have pushy sales people, so we felt confident we were getting the info we needed to make a good decision. Turned out to be a very good decision!

So I have been with ADT for the past couple of years due to inertia although I knew they had a less than stellar customer service reputation and a high price point by comparison to others. Most recently, I had to have a tech out to sort out an issue that I could not sort out with the AI 'helper' on the phone -- Ms. Robot could not match up my system with the issue or anything else. When I managed to get a human being on the phone, I arranged for an appointment (the earliest appointment being a week from the point in time where the problem occurred, so not exactly speedy service). I was assured there would be no charge for the service call due to the nature of the problem unless equipment needed to be replaced. So ADT sent some third party supplier in a car with no signage and a plastic badge clipped to their belt (!). No equipment was replaced, but a charge for 62.97 mysteriously appeared on my charge card shortly thereafter (which popped up on my texts as I have all charges flagged by text). It took over an hour on the phone with ADT to resolve -- and I was told yes, the charge was incorrect, they could not explain why it was made, they were sorry, yadda yadda. So I then decided to have my billing removed from autopay as you cannot trust ADT or their contractors or anything they say regarding charges -- so if you are not on top of them every minute, they will take advantage of you. I'm shopping for a new service. BUYER BEWARE OF ADT.

When the company changed ownership, my account was sold to ADT without my knowledge. I only found out when I started receiving bills from a different company. When I contacted ADT (my "new company") to ask what was going on, the explanations were vague. Eventually, I received an email saying Ackerman was still operating and encouraging me to switch back. Because I'd had several issues with ADT in the past, I decided to return to Ackerman. Terrible mistake. Basically Ackerman sold my account and then convinced me to buy it back. The representative that came to my home, Natalie, told me I needed a new control panel and other replacement equipment, to the tune of around $1,000. I was also advised not to cancel ADT until an Ackerman tech came out to activate my service, which meant I had to pay both companies for the same month. On top of that, Ackerman charged me two weeks before my service agreement was even scheduled to begin. It's been several months and Natalie (who was supposed to be my point person for Ackerman) will not reposed to me inquires. Based on my experience, if your account has already been transferred to ADT, I would recommend staying put. For me, it wasn't worth the extra cost or frustration.

They offer a great package, competitive pricing, and top-notch customer service. Their system is so effective and thorough, that I feel like I live in Fort Knox, which is a great feeling for a woman who lives alone! Very straight-forward and easy system to use, and the company's responses to events are within seconds. Chuck, who has been with CPI for several years, is not only a terrific installer/technician who knows his job from top to bottom, but is always so happy to explain to the customer everything he's doing, and answer their questions and concerns thoroughly. He also ensures that his customers have all the security features that they want/need, prior to leaving their homes. He's also very intelligent and a lot of fun to be around. On the other hand, Michael S., who initially installed the CPI system in my current home, simply came in, did his work, and never really bothered to explain ANYTHING to me, unless I asked him a specific question. Even then, his response was very brief. And, thanks to Chuck, I just found out yesterday that, for 3 years, I was being charged for a security feature that Michael had neither offered me nor installed. So, in addition to highly recommending CPI Security Systems, I also highly recommend that you request Chuck to do your installation, etc., if available!
