Street Food Cafe (or Cafe Tsui Wah) is probably one of the most authentic Dim Sum Restaurant and Hong Kong Tea Cafes but also priciest in the Bay Area. The dumplings and congee are unique (some unavailable elsewhere in the Bay Area) and taste just like those in Hong Kong. These include the more than 6 types of congee made to order (the congee is boiled to perfection till you don't see any single grain of rice), custard buns made of black squid ink and beancurd skin wrapped around vegetables. Prices are at least 20-30% higher than that of other Dim Sum restaurants, but if you crave some of their authentic dishes instead of flying to Hong Kong to savor them, it's worth a visit. read more

I wanted Chinese breakfast and apparently there aren't many places open at 9:00am in the San Mateo/RWC area. Street Food Cafe was the only option and it looked interesting. The place was pretty packed but we were able to get a table. The breakfast menu is straightforward and a great deal. Was a bit hard to find since it's tucked away in the back. We came by and were the only ones at the restaurant since it was the weekend before the Bay Area shelter in place order. They gave us the menu quickly. I was surprised at the high prices for a cafe - $15 or so for fried rice and $15 for a curry with some broccoli and a beef patty. They gave us a tasty veggie soup with tomato base - I think it's a standard American veggie soup but it was so good I wanted seconds. The fried rice wasn't as flavorful as the ones from American Chinese restaurants but did have a lot of meat and eggs in it. The curry was ok - veggies were steamed and the patty had no taste. This restaurant has been consistent in offering many different styles of HK cafe food. Everyone would be able to find his or her favorite types of snack and comfort food. I especially like the wonton, Hainan chicken, beef brisket, and HK milk tea. Recently I was pleasantly surprised that they have switched from plastic to very sturdy paper takeout containers, which are a lot better for holding hot food and soup. This place is great if you are craving some Hong Kong style food. Apparently, this is a chain in Hong Kong that a lot of tourists go to. It also happens to be a decent place in San Mateo if you're craving some congee, or baked pork chop over rice, or other Hong Kong style dishes. When we came here, we tried the rice noodle rolls, bbq pork over rice, and the fish soup. Out of these, the fish soup was really the standout to me. The bbq pork over rice came with a very generous portion of bbq pork. The fish soup has fish balls, fish tofu, mushrooms, shrimp, and you can get it with your choice of noodles or rice. I ended up going with the egg noodles - very yummy! I would come back to get that soup again, and try some of the other dishes they have if I'm having a craving for Hong Kong food. read more

I was very interested in trying this place bc the logo is very similar to Tsui Wah in Hong Kong. I'm not sure if it's a related chain, but I'm always on the lookout for authentic HK comfort food. We came for dinner on a Sunday night and the place was pretty packed. The turnover is quick so the wait isn't very long. The menu is also pretty extensive. They serve a little of everything and you can get dim sum all day. One of my all-time favorite foods is HK style baked spaghetti. I don't know what it is, but that dish always reminds me of hanging out in Aberdeen. We ordered that and the hamburger curry. Both dishes were yummy, but the flavors were slightly off. I'm not sure what it is, but my spaghetti dish was lacking in richness and the sauce was very runny. If they chunked up their sauce, I would be sold. Overall not bad. Liked it enough to come back again. I had the hainan chicken rice with side of lettuce in beef brisket broth. The chicken tasted fresh, flavorful and tender. The rice was lackluster but it's ok since that is the less important part of the dish. The lettuce was just boiled lettuce with broth thrown on top. Nice to have some vegetable with my meal though. Husband had the won ton and beef brisket noodle soup. There were 4 pieces of beef (one of the beef was just fat so essentially not edible) and 4 pieces of won ton. The noodles was cooked perfectly and the broth was pretty good. I thought the portion was on the small side. There aren't a lot of Cantonese style restaurants in the area, the other ones I can think of are cooking papa and abc. I think cafe tsui wah is better but pricier in comparison. There was some spinach sure but nothing else (I am used to having maybe some bok choy or even aromatics). They didn't pack any sauce and utensils like I asked either. I'm an ABC who is familiar with more commonplace Chinese cuisine, but not familiar with Hong Kong-style cafes. Street Food Cafe was a nice chance to travel and experience another food culture. I did have a bit of sticker shock at the prices, like others, but I think part of the issue is that "Street Food" connotes "inexpensive." But the Peninsula is an expensive place to do business, so I'm happy to pay a little more for authenticity and freshness so close to home. Both our dishes were delicious and the ingredients and preparation were good. had the "Three Treasures" plate with chicken, BBQ pork, and sausage; and the "Barrel" chicken and mushroom rice. The BBQ pork is supposedly made in house and tasted very fresh (although the pieces were also quite fatty). We asked for hot tea and it came in big metal mugs, which was a nice plus. Waitstaff came around the tables to refill. We were a little too intimidated to order the fish soup, which our server said was also made in house, or any of the spaghetti dishes. Maybe we'll check those out some other time. Wish there was something that looked like a solid vegetarian entree, disappointing not to see that. As a newly appointed Duke (who knows how long that will last), it is my royal duty to discuss some much needed updates to this listing. Otherwise I might be ridiculed off line... and the error of my initial ways pointed out. Bottom line, I like Cafe Tsui Wah now, way more than when they first opened. It is refreshing to see a business thrive and pick up, and let's hope it stays that way. Given the churn of previous tenants, I really want this place to stay. Some of the noteworthy: 牛脷酥 - revisiting the deep fried dough nicknamed "cow tongue pastry". You can call it Rolling Stones lips, or whatever else tickles your fancy. It's amazing how two separate visits, with a more recent one maybe a month back, shows a difference (and improvement) in the execution. It is far better now. If you can't get your cruller stick, then pick this slightly sweeter classic deep fried dough. 豬潤粥 - pork liver congee. The overall quality of the congee has shot up....I am wondering if the previous visits were when the congee master was not rockin the house (or in the house for that matter. Assorted Pork Organs Congee (狀元及弟粥) is also very good, with my favorite being the pork stomach. You can taste the flavor right into the congee. 鴛鴦 - Yin Yang/Yeen Yeung(Cantonese)/Yuanyang (Mandarin). This is the Hong Kong milk tea and coffee mix. The standard way of doing it is a 50/50 ratio. What you want to do here is ask for more coffee in the mix. Tastes better that way, and get it hot so they add condensed milk (specify too just in case), to ensure a more well rounded smoothness. 冰鎮奶茶 (cold milk tea) - this is a $4.50 newly added offering. It comes in a chemistry like round flask, where there is a blue sphere in the middle with a hollow front. Ice is placed inside, which does not come in contact with the milk tea. The flask itself is placed on top of a plate of ice, keeping the milk tea cold and without dilution. Smile House Cafe in SF repackages this as "champagne milk tea". The packaging is all snazzy, but the true test is in the brewing of the milk tea, taking the careful step to refrigerate it and still come out with a refreshing smooth beverage. This version here is not quite the same as Smile, but for the Peninsula is darn good. Do they really use a flask that is normally used for serving sake? :-) 牛腩米粉湯 (beef brisket with vermicelli rice noodles in soup) - really enjoying the stewed beef brisket here, generally quite tender although the braise sauce is sometimes a touch too sweet (though a minor gripe). This is the true "chu hau" style brisket, unlike Cooking Papa that does the clear broth version but smothers a different sauce over it. The breakfast portion is also very reasonable. The curry beef brisket rice on the other hand, the sauce is not bad, though a little runny....but hits the spot when you don't want to be bothered with Japanese curry rice. 冰鎮菠蘿油 (pineapple bun with a f**kload of butter) - very business savvy of Cafe Tsui Wah to buy fresh pineapple buns from Sheng Kee next door, and serve it with a humongous slice of salted butter, with a markup ($4.50). They keep the butter slab separately on a bed of ice, slice the bun open for you, so you make your own "butter sandwich". Unhealthy but delicious as hell. Pair it with a hot milk tea, hot coffee, or hot yeen yeung! Who gives a f*** about Cream, It's It. Seriously, this is da shit right here. Butter sandwich! And you get crumbs from the bun! Seriously you have all the textures under one roof: savory (butter), sweetness (sugar from bun), flakey almost puff like layered pastry (bun), smoothness (butter), coldness (butter) and if you ask them to heat up the bun, (hotness), all in one bite! Inventory changes, and may sell out quickly. 蛋冶 - scrambled egg sandwich. Amazing how something so simple is hard to find in quality. Triangular sliced white toast with butter, with scrambled egg inside. Done to my liking here and they piled on the eggs one time! With a hot milk tea, this is comfort food for breakfast HK style. 人生意義，奶茶蛋冶 (the meaning of life is a HK milk tea with an egg sandwich). The fish broth noodles here is actually quite good too, and great portions. More things to try in the future, wall specials....like range chicken with pork stomach hot pot soup! Though with the HK style western part of the menu....I have not been brave enough to go back. Free Chinese newspapers (World Journal) for customers. Flatscreen showing World Cup, and free WiFi for customers (get updated password though). Total HK FOB paradise in here for the Peninsula. Three words. Pork Liver Congee 豬潤粥. Okay. Three more words. Cow Tongue Pastry 牛脷酥. Those alone deserve 4 stars even though I rarely write a review based on just one visit. (Hell I rarely write any review!) Thanks to Ken K.'s tip on this restaurant's connection to Hing Lung (SF), I decided to rush over to try this place during its grand opening week which turned out to be a good thing. The interior looked nice and clean. It felt more spacious than the Taiwanese restaurant that used to be at that location. Upon seated I looked at the waitress and said: "Hey! You look familiar!" She laughed and replied: "Ha! You looked familiar, too!" After another round of staring, she mentioned Cousin Cafe (Newark). Okay mystery solved. Now I could focus on the food. * Pork Liver Congee ($6.50): I requested the livers to be a bit on the rare side knowing that they could get overcooked sitting inside the hot congee. This is like ordering steak. Always request more rare than intended. The congee came with plenty of pork livers (some still showing a bit of blood on the surface) and preserved egg (皮蛋). The congee base was nice and thick. But the highlight was the pork liver! Flavorful and smooth. I felt utterly happy that I could have such a good bowl of liver congee outside of HK. 好幸福呀! * Cow Tongue Pastry ($1.25): This is listed as Chinese Fried Donut on the menu. The appearance was not that appealing but it was tasty! Although it's fried, it wasn't as oily as I thought it would be. Slightly sweet and not too doughy. I quite enjoyed this with the congee. Considering that not many places offer this item, I decided to order extra to go for my parents who used to drive up to the City for Hing Lung. * Baked Pork Chop Rice with Fried Egg ($7.95): I asked for sunny side up egg since most of the pictures of this dish on Yelp showed the egg to be more cooked than I would like. Proper fried rice base. Boneless tender pork chop. It's good if you like the tomato sauce more on the savory side with hint of oregano. The sauce is almost the same as the version at Cousin Cafe. Personally I prefer the redder color tomato sauce that is more sweet and tangy (and more buttery). * HK Milk Tea: It's decent. The cold version was sweeter than the hot version. I think I will ask for less sweet regardless next time. Service was great! The manager visited each table to check on the customers. When I commented that the livers were so good and that I had asked for them to be less cooked, he said with such pride: "Haha! One of my "go-to" HK style cafe in the peninsula. Well, one reason is because there aren't any other that I know in the area. Two, it carries the name of the famous HK Style cafe from Hong Kong. However, I am not sure if they are related. Anyhow, price is general on the expensive side compare to other HK style cafe. Lunch and dinner can run you around $15 to $20 or even higher. Food quality is fair, and stable. You can expect the same quality through out the year. The menu generally stays the same but they do add stuff to it periodically. They also have lunch special and afternoon tea special, which usually means if you want a drink it's a little cheaper (lure you into a combo!) My favorite dish is the teppan with mixed meat (chicken, pork, beef, sausage) with your choice of sauce and choice of spaghetti or rice. The portion is huge and I can only finish it if I am extremely hungry that day. Their milk tea is generally my go-to drink, rich tea taste with just a right amount of milk. Plenty of parking near Inshou side, usually harder to find parking near the supermarket side of the parking lot. read more

I was a fan, but recent visit was a disappointment. Although there was no wait and we got seated immediately, the waitress didn't come take our order until I (what I felt like an almost light yell) called out 'excuse me!' Then waitress brought over two cups of tea, but one cup has a full grain of cooked rice on it. Man, I don't want to come up with theories on how that grain of rice got stuck on the cup... Hopefully it wasn't from some dirty dish bin! On food, my favorite pork liver porridge is no longer the same! The porridge itself is watery, not fluffy like it was before. Liver was okay, a tad bit overcooked (also not the same as before when it was cooked better). Seaweed 'three treasure' (fish ball, fish tofu, beef ball) rice noodles in fish broth were okay, broth was fishy (which I liked) and it was a big bowl. Finally a HK style cafe in the area! The week they opened I grabbed a few of my coworkers to try it out. Service was prompt and the manager was super nice and attentive! Lunch specials ranges from $6.95-$7.95 which is pretty cheap considering the area. And you can add in an Iced lemon tea or milk tea for only $1 extra! I ordered the baked rock rod over fried rice with Lisbon sauce which was a light and mild curry sauce accompanied with diced taro, broccoli and baby carrots. I liked that the fish was tender and cooked well and enjoyed the Lisbon sauce and fried rice. I didn't like the coconut flakes sprinkled on top of the sauce; baby carrots were too raw and I felt didn't belong there and the taro wasn't very good either as it was bit too dry. I would probably order it again but with some tweaks. Coworker ordered the baked pork chop with fried egg over fried rice. The sauce here is a diff from the traditional tomato sauce. It's more like a black pepper brown gravy sauce. Different but still good! Didn't try the pork chop but coworker liked her dish overall and would order it again. Her only complaint was too little sauce! Another coworker ordered the beef porridge with fried donut stick. I tried a piece of the donut. It was very fresh, not greasy, lightly crispy on the outside but too doughy in the center. He said the porridge was good but thought that the beef could have been minced more. The egg noodle should've just been called the wegg-noodle because it did not look like fresh egg noodles at all. It was white and a thinner ramen noodle, pale colored. I never got back to TW Village and it's now gone. Replaced by a HK style cafe. Looks like all the Yelpers who I thought would have tried this place have :) Went for two of the chef's specials, Black Pepper Shortribs and Chicken steak with Onion Sauce. Rounded it out with a Rock Cock Pan Fried Noodles. Two of the three came with beverages so we both got HK style Milk teas. These plates were a lot bigger than expected. However it's ok if you work with an Olympic Athlete who can all all of the dishes just to maintain the caloric spenditure. The manager did look at us funny at first but then when everything was gone he smiled. Flavors are decent though I think they need a tad more salt. The noodles were nice and crispy but again just slightly bland for me. Hard to beat for the price though as $20/per person as it was a ton of food. read more
