this was my first time visiting an insomnia cookies. starting with the good, they're open late if you want a late night dessert. the staff working here is also friendly. however, the actual cookie seemed to lack a wow factor. it was pretty indistinguishable from a grocery store cookie (that's a fraction of the cost too). it was pretty mid. the ice cream also had a strange grainy texture, like it wasn't made properly. although the creativity was a step up from crumbl cookie, the quality isn't there unfortunately. also, i ended up getting a gnarly stomachache not even 5 minutes after i took my first bite. i couldn't even finish my order in time before i had to use the restroom next door. read more

This location looks a little worn down, and it's underground without any seating. But man the cookies here are just amazing! They're really delicious and they have some fun seasonal flavors. The brownie (or cookie) and ice cream combo might be the ultimate dessert. Listen, they didn't have to go so hard with the ice cream! They could have phoned it in with some generic stuff. But no, this ice cream is amazing! Thick and delicious, tons of flavor, and huge cookie chunks in every one! Add the cold ice cream with the warm cookies or brownies and wow! The staff at this location were super nice and friendly and while we were there I heard them graciously correct an error with someone's order. It's been awhile since my husband and I have been here, but very happy to know they still holding it down! The fragrance of sugar and dough will subtly hug you at the door. The purple & yellow esthetic of the signs and such are always an attention grabber. As it needs to be for its location in the heart of VCU territory in downtown Richmond. The young man who helped with our order, was very honest about how good the cookies and ice cream (now available) are; though can be a bit pricey. The menu has definitely expanded since it opened years ago. Four cookies were ordered, two for me and two for husband: peanut butter chocolate chip, white chocolate macadamia, birthday funfetti, and classic chocolate chip. This place is called insomnia for a reason and they're open extremely late..so if you take a while to decide what you want they'll probably still be open. You're able to get the cookies for delivery. WARNING: (I'm not sure if this is still the case, but be sure to check) the last time we ordered pick up on the app we weren't able to get it from their new truck location, we had to go to the Richmond Eats building in Scott's Addition and ring a special bell inside. My favorite cookies here are the chocolate chunk and the double chocolate chip. I highly recommend their Oatly chocolate milk. It is hard not to love this business, they have hot fresh cookies. With it being my first time trying their cookies, I took my time to look over the menu and they guy working there was very patient with me which I appreciated. We finally decided on what we wanted and since I'm a chocolate chip cookie fan and heard theirs was great, I ordered two Chocolate Chunks and a Snickerdoodle. To my surprise, the cookies were served warm as if they were just taken out of the oven! When I broke the Chocolate Chunk cookie open to take a bite, the chocolate was melted and gooey and the cookie tasted fantastic!!! The Snickerdoodle cookie was actually very good as well. It was super soft and had a slight taste of cinnamon which I loved. I had no idea Insomnia cookies were that amazing! I love that they offer gluten free and vegan cookie options as well. I received cookies as a gift from a dear friend. They sure looked good. Unfortunately, the idiot who delivered them put them on the porch when I wasn't home. These cookies are delivered in cardboard boxes like scaled down pizza boxes. In the 30 minutes it took to get home after I got a text about delivery, the cookies were covered with ants. Trash. Insomnia, you had one job. Is it too much to ask that you either 1) confirm someone will be home before delivery (you had my phone number) or better yet 2) put the boxes in a bag if you have to leave them? You are charging for delivery, add a penny and buy plastic bags! I tried responding to the number that sent the text message. No reply. So Yelp goes the review. I have ordered for delivery a couple of times. Part of my problem could be caused by the delivery platform rather than the establishment. Though the cookies arrived warm and soft, most recently it took 2 hours to finally receive my order. But let's focus on how devilish this place is! There isn't one item on the menu that I didn't want, and it's so hard to control oneself, especially during a post dinner craving, to just one or two cookies! I love the fact that they make sure the cookies will be hot out of the oven when served, and the cookies are never dry even the day after. It's indeed quite pricey but think of the amount of calories in a couple of cookies is probably worth a meal so the trade off is not so bad LOL. And when I moved to Richmond, I was sad to see that there weren't numerous Insomnia Cookies as well.
