Such an awesome experience!! It was our first escape room but I wanted to do something creative and out of the box for a birthday surprise for a friend, after doing some homework it seemed like insomniac escape rooms were the way to go. I was a little nervous since this was our first room, we were only a party of two (many people say do 3+) AND since we're both Harry Potter geeks I had to choose the Alchemist Room which is a higher difficulty! I won't say it was easy, we definitely had to work our little brains off, but it was so exciting & we were so completely into it that the adrenaline must have kicked in, we managed to finish with only 6 seconds remaining! That must be a new record!! Theme was awesome, surprises caught us off guard (I believe at one point I totally embarrassed myself by clapping my hands and jumping up & down like a 10yr old schoolgirl) & it was just hard enough to keep it very interesting. I personally loved that it was just the two of us, not too many chefs in the kitchen and we could work together but also divide and conquer. Oh and also Dan, our 'supervisor' was the best!! I loved, loved the patient room. This was our fourth room of the day and we had a great time. The overall, the experience was great from the moment we walked in the door. We have done close to 20 escape rooms from a number of different vendors and insomnias rooms are, without a doubt, some of the best we have come across. We have done both of their rooms and had an outstanding adventure each time. The rooms are gorgeously decorated, the puzzles are innovative and challenging, and the stories are solid enough to really transport you into the adventure. I would highly recommend insomnias rooms for an escape room experience. The staff were friendly and very helpful, providing very good clues when requested, and were more than willing to discuss the rooms when you were done to explain what you might have seen, not seen, or forgotten you had done. Highly recommended! A very unique experience. We were a group of 4 and tried the alchemist room. It was a bit challenging and would have helped if more people were with us. But we had a lot of fun. Had an EXCELLENT time in the Alchemist room- it was a SUPER tough with lots of clues to solve - we were able to do it with two people and escaped the room with literally seconds to spare!!! Absolutely terrible experience with the game master on our visit. First of all, the intercom system was broken and we had to wave at the camera for the guy to come in and give a clue. When he did, he did so in such a condescending and demeaning way that we hesitated to ask for help when we needed it. Sometimes, he wouldn't even come when we waved. The room itself was okay. Not at all what it was hyped up to be. Also, $125 for an hour is way too overpriced. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

This is definitely one of the best escape rooms we've done (we've done ER's all over the states). The staff was awesome and the rooms were well thought out, challenging, and a ton of fun! We ended up doing BOTH The Mafia and Alchemist rooms (didn't want to miss out on a place this good). While the alchemist was harder, both were equally fun in their own unique way, with the decor and surroundings submersing you in each theme. Finding the location was a little bit difficult and it was a little bit pricey. But it was very fun and well worth it. The room we did was the patient which was the hardest room to do apparently but that's all that was available. When we got in it was tricky but the guy working was very helpful when we got really stuck. It was very fun and the time flew by really fast because we were so indulged in the game. We didn't complete it but at the end he told us step by step what we missed and how to solve the game. Would definitely come back here again, we had a blast! read more

This was our first trip to Washington, DC (from Arizona) and we booked several escape rooms in the DC area. At Insomnia we booked The Alchemist on May 30, 2017, which was our 55th game overall. When my family discusses escapes rooms after we play them we think of them with three aspects in mind, Setting, Gameplay, and Mechanics. As far as the setting goes, the set itself was done well. It was being to show some wear and tear but it was a good setting. The story went well with the setting, therefore, making it an immersive environment for the story. The props were good, some very impressive. One downside of the environment was the sheer amount of books in their bookcases and I feel that cluttered up the room somewhat. While there were only three of us during our escape, the booking information says it holds up to 7. I don't know if I would want to do it with 7, one more would have been perfect at 4. The game had a decent story to gameplay connection and while we had some searching to do it wasn't too much. Many of the puzzles were unique and memorable and I enjoyed them. They managed to hit one of our pet peeves which were lighting issues in one area. When you get a bit older you have a tougher time seeing in dark lite areas. We mentioned this before the game to the gamemaster and was told it wouldn't be a problem. It was a problem. In one section by a particular puzzle half of it was on a very dark side of the room. If you can't see the puzzle to do what you need to do to it, how is that fun? The fix was simple, give a flashlight no matter what. It really irks me when I bring it up before we play the game, being told it isn't a problem and then that very problem comes right out during gameplay. The rest of our pet peeves were happily avoided which are red herrings(unless you include the sheer amount of books in their bookcases), having to guess, and need for prior knowledge, so great job for not having issues in those areas!!!! Overall, we enjoyed the game a great deal. As far as the mechanics go in the room, it had a good game flow, an adequate hint system, an attentive gamemaster, no breakdowns (Yay!), good customer service and a great website! read more

My husband and I have done 20+ escape rooms all over the country. We try to find the best escape rooms in each of the cities we visit. After doing some research, we decided to check out The Alchemist room last week when we were in town for a conference. Pro: The only pro I can think of is that you can book a private room, meaning if you book for a specific time slot, that room is yours, whether or not you have 2 or 6 people in your group. Cons: The game handler was very unenthusiastic when explaining the back story. Regarding clues, majority of the escape rooms provide a walkie talkie of some sorts or pager to get the handler's attention so they can give you a clue if you are stuck on a puzzle. For this particular one, we were instructed to simply wave our hands to the cameras and he would eventually get to us. At one point during the game, we were stuck on a puzzle and needed some help. It took some time for him to notice us and instead of helping us right away, he told us that he was assisting another game and would be a minute. I'm pretty sure we don't have a minutes to spare when we are playing a timed game......That was super frustrating that there was only one handler for multiple rooms going on at once. We did manage to escape and when we came out of the room and asked him what our time was, he said "we were a couple minutes here and there." So did he not time us at all? Did we just waste our Friday night? read more

Wow. I signed up for the Yelp app so I could leave this review. I'm a huge escape room fan, and I was pumped to try this place, but the experience I had with my husband was awful. We did the 7 star room, "Oblivion". The room has only four or so password puzzles and one video game style puzzle at the end. With forty minutes to go, we wasted about twenty minutes on this puzzle, but figured there must be more to this room and didn't want to waste time, but this puzzle was needlessly time consuming. No, that was it. The hard part of this game was that the last puzzle just takes forever for you to line it up. We finished with the game master moving us on to the end of the game because the last puzzle was just really tough to line up. What a buzzkill. The attitude of the game master was also really poor. What the heck did we do to him? This was a waste of $90 and the worst escape room we've ever been to! read more

I made a dumb mistake on the online booking form, and the staff were so nice in correcting my mistake! The Game-master told me how to contact them, and I got a refund within a day. Plus, their escape rooms are some of my favorites and I've been to quite a few. So fun and engaging, with a really sophisticated feel though the decorations and general storylines. Both rooms at Insomnia Escape Room are great! We just did "The Order of the Alchemist" room and the puzzles were VERY well done! We are veteran escape room players (over 20 rooms in several states) and these two rooms are definitely top tier! The owners put a lot of effort into putting high-quality props in the rooms and invest in awesome technology. We highly recommend both rooms. "The Order of the Alchemist" room is extremely challenging and should not be done by first-time players. But for experienced players who want a challenge, this is definitely the room for you! This place deserves your business! This is an extremely high-quality escape room company.
