I have a soft spot for historic hotels, which made the InterContinental New York Barclay an easy choice for a late-summer family trip before the school year started. Having an IHG Ambassador free night certificate about to expire made the decision even easier. Built in 1926 as part of the grand development around Grand Central, the hotel still holds onto plenty of classic, old-school Manhattan charm. Check-in was slower than ideal, even in the dedicated Concierge line. Because several professional tennis players competing in the US Open were staying at the hotel, our complimentary one-category Ambassador room upgrade was unavailable. The front desk placed us on the 15th floor in a two-double Premium room and proactively compensated us with 10,000 IHG points. That felt like a fair trade. The room and bathroom were spotless and well maintained. Sitting fifteen floors above Midtown kept the street traffic quiet, though the interior soundproofing was less impressive. You will occasionally hear neighbors in the hallway or the elevators clunking as they move through the shaft. Some of the glass and fixtures show a bit of age and patina. I consider that character, though travelers who prefer sterile glass-and-chrome boxes might disagree. The public spaces remain the real highlight. The grand lobby staircase, ornate plasterwork, and high ceilings are reminders of an era when hotels were designed as impressive civic institutions rather than simple sleeping blocks. A massive 9-figure renovation completed just before Covid hit updated the plumbing and infrastructure while keeping the original 1920s personality intact. The location on East 48th Street is hard to beat. Grand Central Terminal is an easy walk away, giving you quick access to Metro-North trains and a major subway hub serving the 4, 5, 6, 7, and Shuttle lines. Rockefeller Center and Central Park are easily reachable on foot, making it an ideal launchpad for getting around Midtown. The lobby bar serves outstanding cocktails, priced at standard Midtown rates, which means you will feel every dollar. The resort fee includes $30 daily food and beverage credits. With the included automatic 18% gratuity, the will get you exactly one specialty cocktail. Despite the price, I thoroughly enjoyed the standout Bee's Knees, made with honey harvested directly from the hotel's own rooftop beehives and apiary. It is a smart local touch. The bartenders ranged from quiet to conversational, but every drink was carefully crafted. Compared to the InterContinental Times Square, the Barclay has far more soul. It is clean, comfortable, exceptionally well located, and full of historic charm. If you can accept a few creaky elevator noises in exchange for classic New York character, it remains one of the better options in Midtown. read more

We typically prefer to stay at a Staybridge, so now you know where we're coming from. We were completely impressed with our inaugural stay at an InterContinental, from the swanky lobby with bar, to the nicer rooms with Keurig, to the all day Lounge access for Ambassadors. Yes, there's a $45 amenity fee, but you get a $30 food & beverage credit and a $20 garment care credit. Also, Ambassadors get a 4pm checkout! The Lounge, open from 7am to 9pm offers light bites, coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, soft drinks, candy, nuts and a machine which makes fresh sorbet once you place a pod in it. Rockefeller Center is only a few blocks to the west, so why don't you just sashay your pretty little self on over to Saks Fifth Ave. read more

The InterContinental is a classic NYC hotel. The rooms are a little bigger than some hotels however still small. The refrigerator is stocked with goodies. They will cost you a pretty penny but you're at a 5 star hotel. The rooms are very comfortable, plush and ready for relaxing. There's a bathrobe and slippers waiting for you upon arrival. Good touch. The staff is exceptional. They take great care to treat you well. The Bell Hop was excellent, he even suggested we use their driver instead of uBer or Lyft. Service, room, vegan options and convenient location. All were excellent. I was in town on business and working from the JPM building at 270 Park. Checkin was seamless and professional as well as friendly. I was warmly welcomed and the process was speedy. My room, a King standard, was very well furnished with a nice size table and comfy chairs I could work from when not at the office. The room was very clean and I did not notice any deferred maintenance. Pillows were comfortable and the bed was easy to sleep in. Room temperature was easy to regulate and I like my temp cool. I had to order room service the first night and I found vegan options. Woo hoo! The food was in my room in less than 30 minutes and delivered with a smile. The texting feature asking about my stay was a nice touch. Checkout was easy and again the service was excellent. I will stay here again for business or pleasure. Excellent IHG facility. read more

The InterContinental New York Barclay has a storied past and is in a great location, and aside from a few other positives, those are really the only items of note. The staff hate you. They not only hate you, but it is clear that they hate their jobs, this hotel and the brand. We waited in a line of three to check-in, which took about 15 minutes because two of the three front desk associates just walked away from the area. The line grew behind us, and it was still just one associate at check-in. Our arrival amenity never arrived, despite asking several times. When we asked for water at the front desk on the second day, we were met with ridicule. During breakfast, the server slammed our drinks on the table. We were walking toward the elevators on a busy morning and hotel staff just walked out and didn't bother to hold the elevator for us, so we missed it. Not great when only two elevators were working. We ended up having to take the stairs. The contempt the staff have for guests is unbelievable. Housekeeping and valet are the two notable exceptions. The rooms are fine, but nothing special. Everything was extremely clean, which is appreciated. There was one luggage rack and one robe, even though two people were listed on the reservation. Housekeeping came quickly when needed with extra towels and pillows. There is not enough light in the room, though the bathroom lighting was great. There was even a lamp by the table that did not work so at this point, I figured they were just trolling us. I did love the Byredo Bal d'Afrique toiletries and despite being against using a hotel body wash, I did use it occasionally because it was so good. However, the towels were threadbare and cheap. The bath mat didn't absorb any water so I had to put a regular towel over it, which was much more absorbent. Bed was comfortable and with the exception of a poorly placed toilet tissue holder, the bathroom was also nice. Climate control did not work well, though when it did work, it was quiet, which is appreciated. However, the lowest setting appeared to be 64 and even though I set it for 64, it never got that low. Additionally, there is no option just for a fan, so when the climate control would turn off, there was no airflow and it was extremely stuffy. So the stay was uncomfortable. The breakfast buffet was not bad. We did the full option and I really enjoyed the smoked salmon, the cheese, the fruit, and the potstickers. Coffee also wasn't bad. Drinks at the bar were very good and the bar snacks were delicious. I thought InterContentinental was a higher-end brand, but I see that I was wrong. I already didn't love IHG, and with maybe one exception, I will look to avoid them in the future. I will definitely never stay in this hotel again and recommend that you do not either. read more

Had a nice stay at this hotel, which is conveniently located in Midtown with easy connections to the subway and onward to airports. Prior to my stay, I was sent a welcome email and helped me look forward to the stay ahead. While they were not able to quite accommodate an early check in, they were able to store bags and off we went to see the city. The room (King standard) was well stocked with Byredo amenities, and the bed was super comfy. The room was simple and elegant, with sufficient space. The buffet breakfast was great, as some dishes changed daily and lots of selection. We had a rainy day there and we were able to borrow umbrellas from the hotel which was a nice touch. I was in NY for 24 hours and knew that I wanted to be centrally located but not directly in the hustle and bustle; all with old school charm and luxury. The InterContinental New York Barclay delivered just that. The hotel is within walking distance of everything which is a plus. I arrived at around noon and was greeted by wonderful staff. The check in was seamless and everyone was prompt and courteous. I was able to check into my room early and get an upgrade which was lovely. My room was immaculate. I enjoyed my city view and absolutely the heated bathroom floors. Since I was there for a short time, I opted for room service. And let me say, I've had many filets but when I tell you this was one of the best I've had. Tender, cooked to perfection and seasoned well. Everything about my stay was exceptional and when back in NY, this will be my first choice of hotels. read more

This is a 5* hotel that basically has 1* service due to insufficient staffing. Waited 20min to checkin at 7pm Saturday- hello this is prime time - asked for manager but nobody appeared. As a Chase Edit customer I did not expect a master upgrade - but I also did not expect the worst room in the hotel. sadly I received a 4th floor room with a view of the ventilation shafts. The only upside was that it was fairly quiet and had real windows that open for fresh air. The bathroom was nice though lacked bar soap. Was warned that cafe would be packed - sure enough a 20pp line for breakfast on Sunday. So much for the free breakfast. Was only 5min wait on Monday but the buffer was kinda sad - more what you would expect at HIX than at IHGs top brand. Service was nonexistent. Overall the rooms are fine but I cannot recommend this property if you want a 5* experience. I'll be generous with 2* for the room read more

Upon arrival, our room was not ready yet, so I decided to change out of my airport clothes into clean clothes in the second-floor bathroom. Immediately, I was stared down by a woman cleaning the restroom. I ignored it and made sure to stay out of her way, going straight into a stall. When I came out of the stall, I went to wash my hands, and she continued to stare at me, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I said, "I'm sorry, am I in your way?" She responded, "Yeah, go get them to give you a room," in an extremely rude tone. I immediately grabbed my suitcase and left. Unfortunately, this interaction made for a very unpleasant first impression of the hotel, and I felt extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. Thankfully, the rest of our stay was very pleasant, and we had a great experience otherwise. The hotel itself was lovely, and we truly enjoyed our time there. Another homerun from the IHG Intercontinental brand. This is the Barclay on the upper east side on 48th at Lex. First of all, did you know that if you fly into JFK and take the Air Train to Jamaica station and then take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to Grand Central, the elevator at 48th Street will dump you about a 1minute walk from the hotel? I didn't! After discovering this, as well as the realization that the time and money saved by not having to taxi or Uber, I saved enough cash for several high priced bar drinks. In any case, wonderful, friendly, desk and concierge staff. Is it worth it to be an ambassador at IHG? Yes, we got early check in and late check out. The rooms were classic style and super clean. You can occasionally hear your neighbors, especially in the hallway. But keeping your TV at a medium volume should ensure you're not bothering anyone. The lobby bar/restaurant is smallish but stocked with fine liquors and knowledgeable bartenders. Is it priced well? Frankly, no. Pricey, but the $11 beer didn't look as bad when we met our pal at the Signature Collection hotel across the street for $13 beers! Great location. Epic building. Superb staff. And great access to transit and JFK. I doubt we'll stay anywhere else when we fly in. read more

Service here is a mess. Shout out to the front desk receptionist Sophy for upgrading us to a larger room on a higher floor with a view during the second half of our stay! She was the only good thing about our stay here. Every morning, we were woken up by loud neighbors having conversations in the hallway. The door and walls are paper thin. Room service is served daily until 10:30pm. We tried to order at 10:15pm on a Saturday night and was told the kitchen had closed early... we then tried to order it the next morning. First, when you dial room service, the operator picks up and has to transfer your call. Second, room service was confused about who I was and who was staying in my room. They thought a Ms. Nakamura was in my room and that I had already checked out. After she got my correct guest name, she hung up on me, forgetting that I wanted to order room service?! That was the first call and it took two more calls to successfully order brunch. That same day, we had a late 4pm check-out but because we changed rooms, I guess it didn't transfer over so at 12pm, housekeeping walked in on me naked because she didn't bother knocking to see if our room was occupied. She thought we had checked out already and then even loudly called the front desk to confirm outside my door after walking in on me. Breakfast downstairs is chaotic & inconsistent. The first morning, we waited 10-min and luckily got seated at 10:50am but everyone after us was denied a table and given a take out box to get breakfast. So the next day, we made sure to arrive earlier. At 10:30am there was a 25-min wait and I was sure we would be denied. Nope, we got seated and they kept seating people past 11am. The breakfast area is basically in their lobby bar, The Parlour, which isn't large enough to host as many people for breakfast as they were trying to. Breakfast was okay, basically a deluxe continental buffet. Hyatt Place serves the same breakfast, and I expected more from InterContinental. Good location but way too crowded. Lobby is always loud and full of guests. We were told the hotel is practically sold out daily. I believe that, but I would never stay here again. read more

I stayed here for work recently. If you are going to meetings in Midtown East, this is an excellent home base. If you don't mind subways, it is also convenient to the 7 train to head over to Hudson Yards. The hotel is nice enough, but not that special. My room was small, which is typical for NYC, but the hotel decor was dated - this is an old hotel building and there was a sign that a major renovation was underway. I did have a hard time getting the A/C right in my room, but not the end of the world. The staff here in my several interactions were very good, very professional. read more

This hotel is classy and old-fashioned, with lots of gold trims and patterned carpet. The hotel is conveniently located in Midtown, with easy access to restaurants, coffee shops, buses, and subways. The rooms were relatively quiet from street noise, but the walls were paper-thin for noises next door. I could hear distinct conversations from phone calls and Facetimes of the guest staying next door. Their elevators were fast, which was a huge plus for a big hotel. 1 star off: The one thing I did not like was their mini-fridge. It was fully stocked with alcohol and drinks, but only left a small corner for guests' personal use. I could not even put a bottled water in that corner. It could only fit a small take-out box. The mini-fridge is a scale, so any movement (not just removal) of the stocked drinks gets triggered for a charge at check-out. read more

I had such a great stay at this hotel. It was super clean, great staff and in an excellent location. It was very easy to get cabs and ubers and the street wasn't as busy because it was one way. The hotel had a classic old fashioned feel to it with a large lobby, great bar and dining area. The breakfast buffet had great fresh options and I felt like I was in a European hotel. The room size was generous for a New York hotel, and they had a safe box and easy to activate shower. The only negative thing I would say was the lighting in the room wasn't great and if you had more than one woman in the room, the person doing their makeup in front of the full length mirror had a more difficult job. (There was a magnifying make up mirror in the bathroom.) Also, you could hear the people in the next room coughing and talking. Overall, it was a great experience and a great place to stay with easy access to many NYC highlights. read more

After catching a red-eye flight to New York, we arrived at the InterContinental Barclay around 10:30 AM--completely exhausted and running on zero sleep after a rough night on the plane. We knew early check-in wasn't guaranteed, but we were hopeful. The front desk kindly said they'd let us know as soon as a room became available. We tried to power through by grabbing food and wandering around, but by 12:30 PM, we were literally falling asleep in the lobby, totally delirious and ready to crash. Out of desperation, we went back to the desk and asked again--and that's when Sharon came through! She went above and beyond to help us get into a room early (around 1pm) and honestly saved our day. This was the most disappointing and terrible service experience I have ever had at a hotel. And I have stayed at many hotels, including Intercontinentals around the world, and traveled extensively. 1. The walls of this hotel are paper thin. We literally could hear our neighbor sneeze, could hear his conversations word for word even though he was speaking at a normal volume. The other wall had a screaming child on our first night. The second night we had to listen to the neighbor having sex for several hours while we were trying to rest. We slept probably a total of 4 hours per night due to this. You can hear your neighbor's toilet flush every time they use it. That is absolutely not on par for a five star hotel with the rates you are paying to stay here. 2. Management was aloof and unhelpful. Our complaint about the noise was met with "sorry the wall are thin" and "if we move you you will still hear your neighbors" nothing else was offered to make our stay more comfortable or to compensate for this discovery that they do not disclose on their website. 3. On the final night of our stay we promptly went to bed at 10pm to get a good nights sleep before our 6am flight and were again subjected to loud intercourse happening. Then at 12:06am (midnight) the light on our smoke detector started flashing - we called the front desk and were told engineering would be right up. 36 minutes later no one was here. We called the front desk again- suddenly a man shows up who looks lost and confused and doesn't know what is happening. They didn't send engineering- they sent someone else who couldn't change the batteries. We then call a third time asking what is going on and get told they will call engineering. I ask to speak to the manager and share that this has been one of the worst stays I have ever had and that this is not the standard someone expects at a five star hotel with the prices we pay to stay here. The manager could care less. Offers nothing but an apology and tells us he only found out about the issue 15 minutes ago (even though we had now been waiting 40 minutes and losing even more sleep while waiting). When I ask if the only thing he had to offer us is an apology he goes completely silent on the phone and says absolutely nothing. Then he repeats engineering will be up- I asked that they be sent up immediately as we are now almost an hour waiting. His response is to get an attitude and say "he would send someone if he wasn't on the phone having to talk to me." I promptly hung up. 28 minutes later after that no one has come up to fix the issue. Total time waiting for this issue they told us was urgent to fix- 1 hour 30 minutes. We gave up, put the DND sign on the door and went to sleep- now with only four hours to sleep due to the incompetence of management and staff. Do not stay here. There are many other wonderful hotels in the area with better rates and even at 4 stars that are much better and have much better service. I know because I have stayed in them. We will be calling our credit card company and filing a chargeback. We have had better stays in motels. read more

This service at this hotel is non-existent. The staff is unhelpful, rude, and all seem to hate their jobs. Isabelle and Mallory and Gabrielle are all hostile and unhelpful. This is a highly unpleasant hotel. For hospitality, this is the most INHOSPITABLE stay I have ever experienced, at a premium cost. To make matters worse, there is no desire on the part of management to meaningfully remedy the problem below. I reserved two rooms for my party. We stayed Friday through Tuesday. I wish I stayed somewhere else. Here's why: -- BOTH rooms had broken air conditioning, so the rooms were hot and stuffy making it difficult to sleep. -- it took a series of complaining to various people including a hostile front desk receptionist named Mallory and the managers above her that could care less if you're unhappy cause you didn't sleep at all due to hot stuffy room. --- they told me engineering would come in 15 minutes. The didn't. So I was late for my appointment. . Every person I spoke to promised to call me back to resolve my issues but NO ONE reached out to me to discuss my issues with the air conditioning and discourteous staff. August 2025 Conveniently located: A perfect location to walk to just about anywhere. I was here for a week to go to the theater, the museums, and the parks. What i appreciated was that I when I arrived they did their best to get me an early morning ready room. With jet lag I needed to sleep to adjust my time clock. And, so my first day was spent in the hotel, sleeping, eating and talking to the concierge to plan my weeks stay. The bed was great ( however a bit soft for my normal liking), the food was presented well and tasted good, and the concierge service exceptional. Both Lillian and Uri made me feel 'at home' and welcomed. Plus night staff always had a smile on their face when I rolled in from a late dinner after seeing the theater. This is a classy old fashioned hotel...... a reminder of times past when life was simpler than it is in 2025. I will return. read more

Avoid this tourist trap! Location is good (but most manhattan hotels are). Other than that I would avoid. Staff took two swipes from one card and one from another a check in. Took $400 from one and $1000 from the other as a pre authorization. Denied any liability for the $1000 transaction when i approached the extremely unhelpful staff. Eventually had it returned after raising with visa disputes team. $45 per day amenity fee not mentioned when booking. This allows a $30 per day credit to spend in room or bar. As a taster a bottle of water is $10, a handful of candy is $10, and a soda can is $14. All plus tax, plus a $2.99 plus tax per day charge to refill the mini bar! Breakfast ok but restaurant cannot cope so lengthy lines every day with up to 45 minute wait. We opted to get a take out one day to avoid this. Waiter will ask you to sign a bill even though breakfast included. This is just to charge you a hefty tip...for a buffet breakfast! Rooms getting dated and zero sound proofing. Take some earplugs if you want some sleep. Poor attitude of reception staff was appalling and doesn't meet with IHG core values. read more

Christmas Holidays no better place to stay than the Barclay Intercontinental. From the GM Sofia Vandaele, Annmara in customer relations who took care of so many things for us, breakfast which is one of the best and servers like Fysal and his colleagues, housekeeping with turn down service....and of course the Christmas Carols each day with a different choir served with hot chocolate and cookies...all made this a really special Christmas. GM Sofia has an awesome team and this trip was made really special. Location is on the East side but its only a 10 minute walk to 5th Avenue with all of the lights and Xmas Tree and a short cab ride to Bryant Park. Very close to Grand Central with trains, food and a Christmas Fair. Lots of Xmas Fairs and great restaurants on 2 and Avenue. Ole and Steen next door for great pastries. I live in So Cal and had an important meeting in NY. I was evacuated during the fires and it was touch and go as to whether I could go to NY. I ended up not being able to go and the hotel charged me for the night due to late notice. The fire was literally right by me. The hotel's response to the situation was cold and heartless. read more

Made reservations long in advance knowing we'd arrive late around 10:30pm 1. No porter. I had to lug four wheeled suitcases up a ramp. Inside, a porter was there 2. Huge soiled carpet stain, looked like motor oil, stained bottom of luggage 3. No 'normal' amenities left in bathroom 4. Impossible to speak with staff as wait time always exceeded twenty minutes (before I gave up trying) 5. When we left they added $170 to the bill without itemization. (We did have three drinks) They did have a comfortable bar area, that was a plus. However our motivation to stay here was the high ratings from Expedia. My wife and I spend about 80-90 days a year in New York, usually staying at the Peninsula Hotel in Midtown. We ended up visiting during UN week, which is one of the worst times to be in the city, but my wife had meetings, so we had no choice. Our usual hotel was fully booked, so we opted for the InterContinental Barclay, which I was told was a 5-star hotel, but it felt more like a 3.5 to 4-star experience. When we arrived, there was no attendant to greet us. The lobby is grand with a bar on the left, but everything from the carpet to the decor and furniture is old and faded. Check-in was quick, and we headed to our room, which was small--maybe about 230 sq ft. One side had a view of the Waldorf Astoria, and while the bed was comfortable, the closet was tiny, and the bathroom was below average. The sliding door provided little privacy, and if there was a second person in the room, they could hear everything. There was even a gap of less than an inch in the door that let light in all night. Plus, the ice machine in the hallway was loud, and the walls were worn with housekeeping trays left out, making it feel more like a rundown motel. Room service was quick, but the quality was disappointing--our order was only a third full, cold, and tasted like plain coffee. The pear pizza was greasy and undercooked, leaving us with stomachaches. The front desk manager offered to upgrade our room for our last two days instead of checking out, which was a nice gesture, so we stayed. However, when we returned to move, we were given the same layout and, in fact, a worse view. When I questioned this, he insisted it was a better room but couldn't explain why. We moved from the 6th floor to the 8th, and our view went from the Waldorf to the front hotel view. Instead of offering to make things right, the front desk manager suggested charging us more. In a city like New York, where there are thousands of hotels, this lack of service is unacceptable. I'll never stay here again; it's a lesson learned. All he had to do was provide the upgrade he initially offered. We have tonight and tomorrow left. Look no further than this midtown upscale hotel right off of Park Avenue. The beds are incredibly comfortable. The hotel offers old style room service with delicious coffee pot of coffee in the morning vs Keurig only. The hotel staff were warm and welcoming, and the lobby had a lively bar. The rooms were quiet and I could not hear any street noise or neighboring rooms. Beautiful place and I will be back! read more

The people are great. The location is amazing and the designs seems to keeps its own without any crazy modernizations. I love art, if you love art, this hotel has that vibe. We don't have to live in a hotel with basic designs just to sleep. If you appreciate some art and the people, this is for you. read more

Mario and Anthony at the Lobby Bar / Restaurant were very efficient in serving not only my family and I but also everyone else around. They were curious and friendly and provided great ideas for activities to do in NYC. It was our first trip so the suggestions were highly appreciated. We were charged an outrageous $58 to have 3 packages delivered to the hotel. We did not expect this kind of junk feee given the cost per night of the room and when I asked for the front desk to remove it they only removed 50%. They actually had overcharged us even under this egregious junk fee scheme - we only had 3 packages delivered and not 4 so the fee was already inflated by 25%. The charge should have been removed 100% and I could then agree to that in the future if I chose to stay again and incur this charge. I won't be back to this hotel because that wasn't done which is disappointing. read more
