Saginaw is not known for having good local food. The locals here have pretty bad taste. You will hear a lot of them say great things about Tony's and Intermission Deli. I don't get it, they're both awful. I've had Intermission a couple times, their subs are basically as good as the ones from Meijer. Dead serious. It's amateur hour. Someone just got some bread, mediocre meat and cheese, put it together and sold it. It's one of the worst subs I've ever had in the United States. I can't understand how someone can come from Chicago or NYC and think this is good? The location is awful too. I drove by it for years and didn't even know it was there. I live in Chicago and I cannot find a sandwich joint here that is anywhere near as good as Intermission Deli. Delicious, filing and fairly priced. Intermission Deli is just one of those places where you can say, "iDeli has great sandwiches," and everyone nods in agreement. It reminds me of the "Soup Nazi" episode on Seinfeld because people are always lined up out the door and it's appreciated if you order by number and read the fine print about tomatoes and onions. I immediately felt uncomfortable walking into this place, not a smiling face. A bunch of "hillbillies" that don't like African Americans was my initial thought. Food is ok, when they make it correctly! I specifically asked for onion and pickle on my salad, the cashier informs me that all salads have pickle and onion. I get back to work and guess what?? I'm a big subway fan but for a more "home made" taste I always go to Intermission Deli. Decent prices, specials on 2 subs/2 drinks. I've really only gone for lunch but I hear they run out of bread and have to close some times. Sucks if you're looking for dinner but you know they're using fresh bread. I'll agree that there isn't a huge variation between a lot of the menu items but everything I've had is tasty. read more

I've been on the fence with this place for a while and finally writing a review. On the one hand, this is a family owned and operated (for many years) place, good subs made to order, on locally baked bread, at an affordable price, and very good flavor. Much to be respected there. On the other hand, I've seen the owner at Gordon's in the morning buying the deli meat and cheese. So, the homemade bread and the fact that they use salad dressing on almost every sandwich (and I don't mean Miracle Whip, I'm talking Italian, thousand island, etc.) is what sets the flavor apart. With that said, for the price, best handmade sub in town. I'll always be a fan. read more

Great family owned deli! Heard the bread is amazing but they ran out the day I came in town. They had wheat bread still, I opted for a salad which is basically their sandwich ingredients on fresh chopped lettuce. Love that everything is freshly sliced! No skimping on the portions. I'm disappointed that I wasn't really impressed, since Intermission is apparently one of those local establishments that everyone loves. The food is delicious and an awesome deal for the price. This is one of my absolute favorite spots in Saginaw. I used to eat lunch here when I was in high school over ten years ago, and have found myself back in Saginaw loving this place just as much as I used to. The place hasn't changed hardly at all, which I think gives it it's charm. This is definitely a Saginaw landmark. My only very small complaint is the way their counter is set up where you order, you end up standing in the doorway while waiting for your food and feeling a little bit in the way with more people coming in and ordering as well as people trying to scoot past you to leave, but is more of an inconvenience because of the way the building is shaped than anything else. I was raised on intermission deli! The service is great, they're always very friendly and have no problem accommodating a picky eater like me when I ask for a #16 minus this, this, and that. The bread is to die for. In fact it's the main selling point for the deli. No bread, no deli! No, literally they close the deli when they run out of bread. Intermission Deli is one of those Saginaw "institutions" that seem to get a thumbs up from most residents on nostalgia alone. The subs are cheap, true, but no cheaper than Subway or other sandwich places. And they do have good bread, I'll give them that. However, the problem I have with Intermission Deli is the bland menu. The majority of sandwiches on the menu are things like a turkey sub with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Yawn. I can make that at home! I can see the reason for the nostalgia - the menu choices probably haven't been updated since the business opened. I just don't understand the love for this place. I would MUCH rather go to Big Apple Bagel, or even Subway. I could spend the same amount of money and get something that I couldn't put together in my own kitchen. read more

We enjoyed several of their homemade soups while there in April and May. When eating with others, we saw their sandwiches - they are HUGE and with the option of specialty breads. Our friends seemed to really enjoy their sandwiches. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. They not only have sandwiches and soup but main-dish salads also. read more

My favorite deli by far. The bread is fresh and amazing. They give you a lot more fresh meat and cheese than you get anyplace else in the area with plenty of fresh veggies. Excellent sammidges and super fast service. Loved that they use albacore tuna rather than the cat food that so many other places rely on. The roast beef was also very good. Lots of filling options. This place went above and beyond to help me, so I would refer them to anyone!! I haven't actually had a sandwich from there, but here is why I love them. A very close friend of mine grew up in Saginaw, but now lives in Chicago. Sadly, her mother suddenly passed away yesterday, so a few of us back in Chicago wanted to do something to help her and her family. I decided to send food to the house so no one would have to worry about meals. Intermissions was recommended by a local friend of hers, so I read a bunch of reviews about this deli and it sounded perfect. I called them up and asked if they would be willing to deliver a bunch of sandwiches and salads to my friend's house, and they were more than happy to help me out. Despite how busy they were, they took the time to make all the sandwiches and delivered them for me within the hour. How many places would do that for an out-of-town stranger? My friend and her family were so grateful for the food, and ironically it was her mother's favorite place to eat. If that doesn't deserve five stars then I don't know what does.
