Baleadas- my husband only ate half of one because they were cold!
    Lucrecia A.

EDIT: make note of the following: THEY AUTOMATICALLY ADD 20% TIP TO YOUR BILL. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY PEOPLE (we were a party of 2) and when the bill came tip was already included. No wonder they have bad service! Bad service, depressing ambiance -- place is old and dirty. This is more like a "cantina" (low end type of bar) Not a family friendly restaurant. Food took forever to come out and of course it was cold! The only reason for the 2 stars is because of the pupusas (very good). I would not recommend.

This restaurant has low rating, but I enjoy coming in here. For some people, the music may be too loud. The noise doesn't bother me at all. The pastelitos and pupusas are definitely tasty. I always order 2 pupusas and 2 pastelitos. I will definitely stop by next time I'm in this area.

Metal looking thing in the beans

Found a piece of metal in the refried beans. Almost fed it to my daughter but took a bite first. Thank god I did. Can't go back here anymore.

    Nasty restaurant

Bad food bad service I don't recommend this place to go eat with family place is nasty dirty tables food take about 40 minutes to be served

You walk into a large seating area, since I came in around 4PM it was largely empty. I didn't really care about ambiance (I rarely do), I was there for the Pupusas and that was it. The menu is filled with tons of other delicious options, but I didn't come to a Pupusa restaurant for anything but Pupusas. Your options are: Pork, Chicken, Cheese, Pork with Cheese, Chicken with Cheese, or Cheese and Beans. They're all two dollars a piece so you can really go nuts with as many as you want. They also have a bunch of ala carte sides if you want, I suggest ordering the fried plantains. After a short wait, my food was brought out to me. The pupusas were piping hot as were the plantains, they all came with curtido which is the Central American equivalent of kimchi or saurkraut. It's essentially a pickled(ish) cabbage that's spicy, it's delicious and the perfect compliment to the Pupusas. The plantains were ripe, so that made them extra sweet and delicious. The sweetness compliments the spiciness of the curtido perfectly. I suggest your bite to be a combination of the three (curtido, plantain, and pupusa). The star of the show as obviously the pupusas, I ordered a pork & cheese, a chicken & cheese, and a solo pork. Each one was heavenly, they're served piping hot so the cheese is gooey and melty. The pupusa crust whatever you want to call it is crispy but still fluffy without being gritty. The meat is seasoned perfectly and the it's incredibly tender. Essentially, these pupusas were flawless. All in all it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time and I will most certainly be back. Oh yeah, all of this only cost 12 bucks! Parking: Plentiful and Free Service: Friendly (having a grasp of Spanish is helpful for the menu, but not essential) Cost: Cheap (they take cash or credit) Ambiance: Tough to judge because I went at a bad hour, they have a full bar set up too so I imagine it may get busy later in the evenings. Overall one of the best meals I've had in a long time, writing this review made me crave it again! Don't be intimidated by the not so lovely exterior of the shopping center, this amazing gem awaits you.

The place it's literally EMPTY ALL THE TIME - DAYTIME BUSINESS HOURS. Smells like "HANGOVER" a clear statement that they serve mainly MAN
    Flowercita L.

If there would be an option for NO STAR --that would be the rating. This is not a descent place. Its a place where man are definitely treated better than woman. I told the guy at the door, food handler, who usually hand delivers the phone orders about the situation with the waitress who said that my teenage daughter and me could not eat at the restaurant-because we pre-ordered the food by phone. I pre order at the chinese restaurant in Aspen Hill, at the Pho Restaurant on University Blvd (W) at El Catrachito in Wheaton etc etc etc NO WHERE I HAD ENCOUNTER A WAITRESS SAY WE COULD NOT STAY BECAUSE WE PRE-ORDERED. Hello, I paid for the food, it was not FREE. The guy by the door, the food handler, said its THE OWNERS REGULATION NOT TO ALLOW PHONE ORDER CUSTOMERS TO COME AND EAT AT HER EMPTY COMPLETELY RESTAURANT. I order mostly PUPUSAS from this place, close to home and right off the Metro. Other than that its a Horrible Business. I've heard it many other times from neighbors and friends not to go there but now I experienced on my own. This are my negative observations and review they receive based on their service they provide.

Hot toddy - waiter recommended, it's hot and has honey lemon taste like a tea but the alcohol is also a bit strong 2/5 Pineapple margarita - very very strong almost like straight alcohol lol 1/5 Red sangria - super well balanced and fruity! Very yummy 4/5 White sangria - a little bit sharper alcohol flavor and less well balanced but still good 3/5 Embutido Combo - Jamon Serrano, Salchichon de Vic, Chorizo Iberico - I'm not sure which is which so going by the picture left to right. A little spicy, overall good quality but I do think they put a bit too much oil which made it have an extra oil taste 2.5/5 Middle - like prosciutto this is the best one! Not dry at all in any area and not too salty 3.75/5 Right - least favorite but it is still good overall. Taste a little less yummy than the one on the right even though the one on the right is too oily 2/5 Queso Mahon - rich and cheesy. Not too sticky and very soft. I like the little fruit it comes with too 3/5 Seared scallop - usually squid in rice I feel like is just color but this one was super savory and delicious with a unique taste too that I'm thinking must be from the ink! It's made super well and the crispy sear on the scallop adds so much flavor but also the scallop was not overcooked at all, super bouncy and tender. 4.5/5 Spanish risotto - very moist and yummy! Even though it's just vegetables it's made well 3.75/5 Crispy pork belly - falls apart and very tender. Not dry at all! Unfortunately too salty though. Also very heavy. Meat too salty but veggies it came with like potato that soaks up the flavor was like inedible too salty 2/5 Seafood paella - I think it came out a bit faster than 40 minutes but I didn't keep track. Large serving size! Wish there was more seafood but lots of rice! Very moist and flavorful rice, seafood flavor comes through too! Wish they cooked it longer though since bottom is not crispy at all. Shrimp is overcooked unfortunately but individually seasoned. All the squids and octopus don't have much flavor but cooked well and not chewy at all. Mussels were good too but had some weird webbing on some pieces that made me not want to eat it and size is a bit small. Needs more seafood to balance the rice amount 4.25/5 Crimini mushroom - weird with the poached egg especially since there's a bunch of mushroom liquid below that I think would mix weirdly together. But ignoring that, the mushrooms themselves were very flavorful and actually taste really great with paella! 3.75/5 Basque cheesecake - very heavy and dense. Jam is not too sweet which is nice 1.5/5 Churros - very airy and light inside! The fried part is more than double the inside though so wish that was a little less thick so it can be a little less oily but still overall light. Came very warm and the dipping sauces were very liquidy. Chocolate is on the darker side which is a nice match 3/5

I went to Atxondo hoping to taste the work of a Basque chef, and found out that the new chef is…read morefrom El Salvador, but has studied cookery in Spain. After having a full meal with cocktails, appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee (about $70 per person), I concluded that Atxondo will be a definite future destination for Happy Hour and light bites, but that my full meal dining dollars will be spent elsewhere. The Patatas Bravas (Fingerling Potatoes) were outstanding, with their two tasty sauces and rich, crispy flavor and texture. The Hibiscus Margarita with its salt and tajín rim was good enough to warrant a second one... but the Sangria was lackluster due to the complete absence of cut-up fresh fruit in my glass. The "Crispy Duck Breast" is no longer served whole, but sliced on a bed of sauteed kale... and, sadly, seemed to be only a shadow of its former self. The Lamb Meatballs suffered from being mushy (a coarser grind would have made a world of difference in the texture) and lacked that meaty exuberance one treasures in any kind of meatball. My serving of Basque Cheesecake was almost comically tiny (at $9 per serving, perhaps not so funny after all). But my cup of Americano came out of the espresso machine strapping strong and piping hot, with a gorgeous head of natural crema from the oil of the coffee beans. So I will definitely return for a future Happy Hour to devour the outstanding Patatas Bravas and sip the good Margaritas, and to try the bargain Manchego Burger and other Happy Hour bites. For serious dining, Atxondo falls short of the mark... but for drinks and bar food, Atxondo turns out to be a real neighborhood gem. .

If you lands you at the train tracks, yes that tiny road leads to La Cuchara. Prompt greeting by the host and very attentive service throughout our dining experience. I enjoyed all appetizers (Pintxos) but my absolute favorite was the beef empanada, it was so full of flavor. The tapas potatoes and salad were very tasty too. I had the rainbow trout for entree, for which the cuts were coming up short so they asked if shrimp was ok to add. I enjoyed the flavor of the shrimp, but I think the fish lacked seasoning- it was the only plate I didn't enjoy. Had the Aim to spark cocktail, a very well balanced drink! I'd visit again!

We had gotten the Beef Empanadas and Dumpling Squash Beignets. The beignets weren't what we were expecting but were delicious. They were fried balls with squash cooked inside - very tasty. The empanadas were just as good with plenty of beef and a great aioli. All around, an amazing first experience here. The ambience was lively and service was great. Food and drink specials were just as amazing. We will definitely be back!

The decor inside was beautiful and my favorite color, green. The pictures on the wall and the colorful drapes with wood accents made it very spanish and kund of historical lookimg. The food was amazing! We ordered the octopus off the main menu and 2 items off a June experice menu. The octopus tasted smoked to me. I ordered because based on what I read about the restaurant I felt they would do it well.. and they did! The potatoes needed a touch of salt for us, but we are salt people. The Croquetas were so creamy and delicious with the garlic shrimp. The cream cheese on the toast set off the flavors of the carleized onions and whisky reduction pork. The coup de grâce was the Cheesecake desset. It was warm and a combo of airy and dense. The granny smith apples on the side were tart and pallet clensing. So good! We also received shirtbread cookies and a chocolate cookie thing that were delicious! The prices are on the expensive side, but definitely worth it. Great place for sharung and date night.
