Wrong Demo Last…read moreweekend, my wife and I were Boston for a wedding. We stayed at the Moxy Hotel. It was well-located in the theater district and a seven minute walk to the Four Seasons, the wedding venue. The rooms were a vision in budget chic. The major design motif was untreated, distressed, unpolished recycled concrete. When overpasses and bridges are demolished to make way for replacements, the discarded concrete must be catnip to the Moxy interior design team. They cannot seem to accumulate and deploy enough of it. Hipster-like in all ways. The dimly lit hallways feature concrete on the ceilings and floors. A real money saver. Who needs wood or carpeting when there is plenty of distressed concrete to go around? The room: Yes, concrete abounds again on the ceiling and floor. Don't need much as the room is about the same size as a compact SUV without cup holders. There are no closets, drawers or credenzas. We got three hangers. I had to use one for my tuxedo; I graciously offered the others to my wife for her attire. There was one easy-to-assemble round table and two chairs. One was an arthritis chair: if you didn't have arthritis before you sat in it, you would upon getting up. It was low as sling shot and I needed a hoist to get out of it. We relegated it to as our laundry area. The hotel, no doubt anticipating our every need, thoughtfully provided a laundry bag to accompany this chair. We used the other chair as a staging area for our daytime gear. We named it Wrinkles -R-Us. Part of the walls had an ersatz wainscotting, perhaps in an effort to soften the impact of the stained concrete everywhere else in the room. There are 10 pegs (not hooks), on the walls, some which we used for sleep wear and underwear. In no time, our room looked like a freshman dorm room with a roommate who never cleans up after himself. The bathroom: More concrete. No pegs (where one might hang a shirt or robe), but instead there were short, horizontal pipes, not distressed this time, which precariously kept the towels aloft. There was a aluminum stool, again recycled. We could never figure out why we would need a stool in the bathroom. Maybe to hold any falling towels? The door: it was a sliding door, much like you'd find on a barn. Never really closed. Best for couples married for decades whose privacy is largely optional. The toilet. I thought you'd never ask. The lid kept falling, slam! Such a charm for the middle of the night bathroom needs. We developed a strategy to sit up (or stand up) and grab the lid prior to flushing. The good news about the unstable lid is that prevented the wavering towels above it from falling directly into the toilet. The restaurant was on the second floor, so when we had to use the restroom, we went to the third floor. Upon exiting the elevator, we were greeted by a floor with furiously repeated black and white cross hatching design, obviously reminiscent of Ketamine. To keep things consistent, we were also welcomed by a deep purple flashing light. An acid trip, without the vocal and guitar stylings of Jimi Hendrix. Oh yes, the bathroom. Or bathrooms. There were choices. There was Gender Neutral and All Gender. I went to the All Gender first to see what impact it might have on my gender. Nothing. On another occasion, I went to the Gender Neutral. Also no change in my gender status. Both of these bathrooms offered the same, standard fixtures. I did not want to ask the front desk about their differences because I didn't want to seem like an out of touch, grouchy senior. Obviously, if you know, you know. I did not. Concrete and Ketamine. Not my demo. If I know of any itinerant dating app founders who want a crash pad in the theater district, I will recommend the Moxy. Overall, though, we managed to have a good time and lots of laughs.

The next day I emailed about early check-in and a rollaway bed. The hotel replied that early check-in was first come, first served, and stated in writing: "We currently have your request for a rollaway bed, in your current reservation... Our rollaway bed is the size of a twin bed." My wife called at 8 a.m. on July 4 and confirmed the rollaway was on our reservation. We drove from Connecticut and arrived around 11:30AM At check-in, the front desk said no rollaway beds were available and our room was not ready. When my wife explained that she had just confirmed it that morning, the same employee said she must have spoken to housekeeping and that housekeeping did not have authority to reserve one. So the hotel can confirm something, put it on your reservation, then later say it does not exist?!? Since the room was not ready, we were told we could check our bags and use the rooftop pool. Around 2 p.m., the 11th-floor pool attendant acted like we were trying to sneak in and called the front desk with our full reservation name before eventually allowing us in. The rooftop pool was NOT family-friendly! It felt like a college/frat pool party: packed with adults drinking, socializing, sitting on all sides of the pool edge, filling the pool, all chairs, all tables, and the bar. There was nowhere for my wife, me, or our three young daughters to sit or put our belongings. One kind guest offered us one beach chair. The pool was so crowded there was barely room for kids to swim safely! My wife felt unsafe going in or leaving our things unattended. The deck boards were so hot they burned our daughters' feet; we had to put a towel down for them to stand on. As we left, we saw a mom tell her two small daughters they could not swim because it was too crowded, and the youngest (approx 3YO) began crying. It was sad to watch, but I totally understood! Around 3 p.m. our room was ready. It was small, unclean, and disappointing. The bathroom sink was clogged on first use and would not drain. The closet had no extra blankets or sheets. There was only one roll of toilet paper and two towels despite being booked for a family. The beds were tiny. The toilet was dirty under the rim. Other issues: only two cups, only two waters, broken/missing ice bucket handle, no ice bucket bag, dirt/dust inside the bucket, and worst of all, the 8th-floor window was unlocked with three young children in the room!Completely unacceptable!!! If we had not already bought tickets for View Boston across the street, we would have left immediately! The next morning my wife checked out around 8:30 a.m. because we could not wait to leave. She overheard a male front desk employee with glasses loudly and rudely yelling at a guest on the phone, saying, "Well, you are not telling me what the problem is!" and "You did not call us and tell us there was an issue!" Very aggressive and VERY unprofessional! Then her bank card was charged $104.94 for taxes/fees we had already paid through Expedia, including a $70 "overnight guest parking fee" even though we were paid hotel guests using the hotel's guest parking from 11:30AM July 4 to 8:30AM July 5. She wanted to pay cash, but the employee said, "Sorry, I already hit the process button." This hotel was one failure after another: no early check-in, no rollaway despite being requested and confirmed, overcrowded alcohol-heavy rooftop pool, unsafe hot decking, poor staff interactions, dirty room, clogged sink, dirty toilet, missing basic supplies, dirty/broken ice bucket, unlocked 8th-floor window, and surprise charges. If you need a party pad and do not care about comfort, cleanliness, or families, maybe this place is for you. But if you are traveling with children, PLEASE GO ANYWHERE ELSE!!!

The lobby is downright regal, and I enjoyed the Oak bar and lounge, which has lots and lots of bar seating. It's on the guest room floors where things get less rosy. There is a lot of scuffing and scarring, particularly on the guest room doors. My room (facing over Copley Plaza with views of the library and Trinity Church) was a big square, with the door opening directly to the room with the bed just a couple of feet away. There's no vestibule or entry, so hallway noise can be an issue. The bathroom is pretty standard, and there's only one chair next to the bar table. The bed was very comfortable, and I did enjoy having a real plant on the desktop. The room service breakfast was timely and tasty. Mostly I feel like this would be nice to visit for the lobby and bar, but I would probably stay elsewhere in the future to try out different guest accommodations.

Luxury and grandeur are highlights here!…read more The Hotel Commonwealth is a beautiful place with grand architecture and awesome inspiring views. These views come from inside and outside the building. It's located in Boston, lots of pride here for the baseball team, it's the "official home," of the Boston Red Sox . As you walk and down the Ave of Commonwealth, the traffic is terrible. Make sure and watch and experience the area as a pedestrian. When you check into the hotel the parking is all valet. Remember this is a luxurious place and the parking is pricey about $75 a night . You can check in around four p.m. too! The experience is absolutely flawless. They have all that you need to have a great evening . We are on vacation and they have in room dining . All was absolutely perfect on our trip. Thank you to the staff for making the evening special.

There was a TV, safe, steamer, robes, Nespresso machine, fridge, complimentary Voss water (both sparkling and still), and lights and curtains controlled with buttons. On the surface, this hotel presents as polished and upscale, but over time it became clear that it is a full-on Monet--looks good at a glance, but the closer you get, the more issues appear. During my stay, I was required to move rooms three times--once voluntarily after an upgrade, and twice due to serious maintenance issues, including a sprinkler-system flood. In subsequent rooms, I experienced repeated heating failures, inconsistent hot water, and even a shower head detaching during use. The heating issues were ongoing and never fully resolved. On multiple occasions, my room dropped to 66-67 degrees despite the thermostat being set to 80. Even after maintenance visits, the room never consistently warmed beyond 75 degrees. On the morning before my departure, I woke to cold air blowing again, confirming the problem persisted through the end of my stay. Management follow-through was disappointing. Promises to check back or assist were not kept, and communication was inconsistent at best. While beverage credit was offered, it did not come close to addressing the cumulative disruption, lack of rest, and stress caused by ongoing room issues over nearly seven weeks. The saving grace of this hotel was the weekday bartender, Rebecca. Monday through Friday, she greeted my colleagues and me with genuine warmth, professionalism, and grace after very long workdays. She was consistently excellent. Unfortunately, that level of service was not present on weekends, and our group ultimately chose to avoid the hotel bar until Rebecca returned. That said, I do want to acknowledge Shirley, Wendy, James, and Nate, who were consistently kind, professional, and helpful, as well as the valet staff, who were always efficient and courteous. This hotel may work for a very short stay if expectations are modest. For long-term or extended stays, however, the operational issues, lack of follow-through, and inconsistent hospitality do not align with the image or price point the property presents.

The entrée consisted of beef tenderloin paired with a scallop and lobster tail brochette, accompanied by a spring medley of fresh peas, haricots verts, fava beans, asparagus, and snow peas alongside a honey-ricotta potato terrine. We were pleasantly surprised to receive a complimentary upgrade to a suite, which was perfect for our family of four with two kids. The extra space made our stay much more comfortable. The club lounge was a highlight. The food was consistently fresh and plentiful, and the staff there were genuinely kind and attentive. Our kids especially loved making their hot chocolate every morning, and there was an Indian gentleman working there who was especially sweet--he always made sure they had marshmallows, which they looked forward to every day. I really wish I had remembered his name. We also did s'mores at the hotel, which was a fun and memorable experience for the kids. I wish we had time to use the pool, I kept hearing great things about it from other families. My only and biggest complaint was the beds and pillows. They were extremely soft, and unfortunately we all woke up with neck and back pain, including the kids. That was the one downside of an otherwise very comfortable stay. Overall, the rooms were kept very clean, the service was excellent, and the amenities were great. Despite the bedding issue, we would definitely stay here again.

I can't help but say good morning back to the elevator. Hahaha *There are a basket of complimentary snacks (chips like doritos, sun chips, etc. and cookies like Oreos, grandma's cookies, and trail mix) and bottles of water in your room that get refilled everyday, and if you need more, just ask. *In the evening, there's a cart by the elevator with treats that you can pick up on your way back to your room. One day was bags of fresh popcorn, another day was a selection of candies. *There's water refill stations in the gym and the 2nd floor - but they're not just any ordinary water station. It's called "bevi" and you can customize your water with different flavors like Tropical Melon Mist, grapefruit, watermelon, or peach mango (the second floor water station had different flavors), and you can even press the button to add "vitamin boost (vitamin C, zinc, vitamin d, and some other ones) or just plain water. The room itself is spacious, clean, and the beds are comfy. Cozy slippers and robes are available for you to use in the closet. There's a little fridge in the room, but no microwave, so if you wanted to heat something up, you're out of luck. When booking the hotel for this trip, my friend and I had a hard time finding a room with 2 beds, so I think 2 bed rooms are rare in Boston, so we really lucked out with this one. The staff is super nice and helpful, even the valet people are constantly opening the doors for us to go in and out. I can't recommend this place enough! I would definitely stay here if I come back to Boston!

We purchased tickets that required printed tickets and one call to guest services and they were printed. Just amazing! In the evenings, the hotel offered a fun selection of complimentary treats like hot cocoa, iced tea, popcorn, lemonade, and a candy bar--such a nice touch. It's also conveniently connected to great dining options (Raku and George Howell coffee), making it easy to grab a meal or coffee without stepping outside, especially in bad weather. There's a bar on-site as well, and the drinks were fantastic. Terrell, our bartender, stood out for his friendliness, attentiveness, and skill. The hotel was consistently clean, and the staff were quick to accommodate any request. The location is another big plus, with easy access to nearby attractions by Uber, walking, or subway--no car needed. I highly recommend this hotel and would absolutely stay here again. Totally worth it.
