We had a great experience with Nikolay and the crew from Iris Landscaping. We had a large hillside in San Anselmo which required a thoughtful combination of drought and deer resistant planting. We also needed to replace an old irrigation system with a modern larger one. Nikolay presented a number of alternative solutions and made very creative design suggestions for different plant layouts. He provided a detailed estimate of the work with no "surprise" extras at the end. This despite the extra labor involved in drilling into the hardened hillside to provide adequate room for the new plants. His crew was extremely conscientious that the staging area in our driveway was clean and usable each day despite deliveries of hundreds of plants and truckloads of mulch materials. I have never seen a harder working crew as they moved up and down our steep hillside. Iris Landscaping is small local group of artisans who can be overwhelmed at times by the number of projects in which they are engaged. My neighbor contacted IRIS to landscape the small, adjoining patches of yard belonging to three condos. My patch was about 20' x 2' and I paid over $1,200! The worst part is that the area looks ugly. Not one neighbor thinks it looks good. No weed barrier was laid, so weeds are a real problem. They did not follow the plan which was submitted to the HOA and it looks like they just planted whatever they had left over from prior jobs. Iris Landscaping just completed an extensive exterior project for us which included a complete re-do of our backyard as well as the front of our house. We are beyond pleased with the results and had a great experience working with Nikolay, Shy and their team. The attention to detail, their professionalism, their artistic and architectural ideas - all top notch. When we initially met with Nikolay to discuss the project, we had some specific requests which I would call lifestyle requests that we wanted to be incorporated and might have taken away from an architect's vision for a project like ours. Not only did Nikolay incorporate these asks but he made them look like they belonged and we are super happy with the results. While we had a plan for how the finish result would look, Nikolay asked that we be open to making changes along the way because sometimes in the middle of a project, he seems better ways to do things. I cannot recommend IRIS Landscaping enough. We did an entire remodel of our front and back yards (which hadn't been updated for at least 20 years). We wanted a simple, clean look that was primarily functional for our three kids. We needed to replace our rear retaining wall, our side fence, and our driveway. We also wanted to put in a swim spa and to open up an additional seating area beyond the old retaining wall. Nikolay was fantastic in helping us understand how we could be make use of the space we had. Countless times, as the project progressed, we'd stand in the front or back yard and discuss not only how the project would look, but the best way of getting it done in terms of quality and cost. Nikolay and Shy also went the extra mile not just to ensure we were happy with the final product, but also that, when the time comes, we'll easily be able to add new features (such as additional lighting or irrigation). While walking the dog in the neighborhood we visited a yard job being completed by Iris and met Iris' owner. We needed an extensive job done to preserve our hillside and Nikolay came to our house. His expertise and ideas were compelling and his bid was excellent. It took 3 weeks to complete the drainage, terracing, retaining wall, drip system, and soil work. Berto and Claudio did the primary work with 12 tons of boulders: they are truly creative artists, stone masons of the first order! They worked hard every day, had wonderful attitudes, and took great pride in their work. Their work and that of Nikolay exceeded our highest expectations in every way. These men and this company know what they are doing and they do it very, very well. The cost of the job came in as bid and we had additional work that was very reasonably priced. The interim planting support was excellent and we will work with the company in the fall to do the essential hillside planting and annual maintenance. Nikolay has an eye for details, knows hillsides and yards, and he is very creative in his design suggestions and layout. He has built and sustained a long-term, loyal staff and is an excellent supervisor and rightly respected by his employees. On the personal level he is a great guy, fun, and good humored! As owners of an Oakland craftsman home/money pit we have seen it all. We have slowly remodeled all 3000 square feet of our home with the exception of a bathroom, a hall and the backyard. In the 5 years we have owned our home I was tired of working with contractors with attitudes. The task of designing our backyard was overwhelming and took about 6 months to get the ball rolling . . . . Nikolay was patient the whole way. His bid was in the middle of the road. The reason that we picked him was because I felt that he communicated well, he always responded to phone calls and email quickly and I felt comfortable that he would be easy to work with. Also, he was willing to work within our budget and came up with creative and innovative ideas. Nikolay and his team laid a sandstone patio, built new redwood fence, gate, garbage enclosure, stairs and railing, and reworked an existing pergola to make it more useful. We live on a hill with tons of water flowing underneath our house and it had already flooded once. Most important to us was Nikolay was very cognizant of our water sensitivities and suggested additional drainage as well as built new retaining walls and reinforced existing footings and retaining walls so that our yard doesn't go sliding into the neighbors'. I work far away from home and Nikolay was always willing to work around my schedule to meet with me in the evenings and weekends to review progress and answer any questions. His team was always very courteous and left the yard clean and tidy every evening. We liked Nikolay and his team so much we had him came back to seal the patio and trim some trees a couple of months later. I am a business person who respects other business people who have a high standard of workmanship, integrity, honesty and do what they say they are going to do and more. Nikolay, Shy and their experienced crew, more than met this standard and made a very difficult landscaping project on a sloped hill, a reality without stress and unnecessary hassles. I highly recommend Iris Landscaping; I only wish we had known about him earlier so that he would've done our front yard landscaping. We just completed our backyard project wherein we tore out our lawn and replaced it with a succulent garden, amidst striking boulders and drought resistant flowers and shrubs. Nikolay also planted succulents and ground cover on our tricky hill, and built stone wells around the plantings on the slope with leftover rock we had previously. We have a concrete patio which was an eye sore, and with small changes he transfigured its look so that now it works with the rest of our design. I hired Iris to completely transform my back yard, which was just recently completed. They came recommended by a business colleague, who had nothing but good things to say about them. Now that I've experienced their work for myself, I agree whole-heartedly! Having only a general idea of what I was after, I decided to turn over much of the creative decision making to them. After only a couple of short meetings, and some emails back and forth, they honed in on my general aesthetic, and designed a space which works with and compliments the house itself.
