I'm a huge fan of Detroit style pizza and when you put a steel city twist on it. Well full or not we had to give it a try. This location was the take out only and although the street in front of the restaurant was really packed we did find parking not far away. We walked in having an idea what we wanted. The staff was very helpful in helping us decide. The order was a plain cheese, homemade chips and dip (do not pass on the chips and dip! ), extra sauce and ranch dressing. Initially he they were out, but then said let me double check .... They had one left! Much appreciation for looking vs just saying we're out! I have heard many good things about Iron Born & the Detroit style pizza. This was my first time for each. The place itself is a straight up pizza joint. I've got no problem with that!! Grab a beer down the street and a slice up the street!! The guy running the place knew what he was doing. They were busy, and he was rolling. I preordered and it was ready on time. In and out. No problems. The pizza? It's different. I'm kind of sauce guy. This pizza for me was a little too light in the sauce department , little too much dough. The caramelized edges were the best part. So don't get me wrong, it wasn't the best pizza I've ever had, but I devoured it happily!! Next time I think I'll just order extra sauce. See how that goes. read more

The pizza is always so good here! On a garlicky, focaccia base, the pizza has tons of flavor. Very filling! We love the buffalo chicken as well as the pepperoni (they have a great red sauce). Might be my favorite pizza in Pittsburgh! Their menu has an awesome selection of specialty pizzas, all distinctly different from one another and sound delicious. I ordered the chicken bacon broccoli ranch pie. It had tender roasted chicken, grilled broccoli, crispy bacon, and a creamy ranch sauce. It was absolutely delicious! The dough was thick but still fluffy, with an excellent crunch on the edges. It had the perfect amount of melted mozzarella cheese on top too. Each pie comes with 6 slices, which is super filling, and I ended up saving half for later. I'll definitely be coming back in the future! Tried the white pizza and it did not disappoint. My only complaint was i could so with less of the caramelized onions or even none and maybe more tomatoes. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the pie. At first glance it seemed a little small and pricey at $18=1 pie/6 slices but it was super filling! And the crust....the crust was perfect! Perfectly crispy on the edges, airy and light and not too heavy. Heaven in a bite. If you like pizza that isn't your normal plain jane pizza, try this!!! I usually don't even like deep dish, but sometimes I want it--and this was hands down the best I've had. The crust was super crunchy on the bottom and edges, with that perfect cheese caramelization that takes it to another level. I had tried Iron Born years ago when Federal Galley first opened. Definitely a unique type of pizza. For me I guess it's just too much fried dough, with a lot of sauce but not much cheese. It oddly reminded me of eating Pizza Huts deep dish pie as a kid. I was never fond of Pizza Hut to their pie, but my mother loved the deep dish so that would be the pie we would get. We were at Grist House and the food truck wasn't drawing our interest so we decided to try Iron Born. I ordered online and my husband picked it up while I held the fort down at the brewery. Definitely convenient ordering and within walking distance was also a plus. When he got back I was a little underwhelmed. Again, I think it's just personal preference. There was nothing wrong with the pie. It was warm the ingredients tasted fresh, it just wasn't something I would seek out. Too much dough for me, but if this is your style of pizza I think you will enjoy it. read more

I walked in this last time and one worker was trying to leave and was arguing with a customer on the phone because he wanted something they didn't have in their computer, but had as an ingredient on their menu. From what I could understand he just wanted it on the side. The whole 5-10 minutes I was in there waiting (for my pizza that was done, and dying on a table) she argued on and on and then finally handed the phone off to someone else who more level-headedly explained the same thing, so she could leave. I stood there waiting for a while when either one could have handed me my pizza that was already paid for, and let me leave without having to stand there awkwardly while a disagreement ensued. I ordered pizza for pick-up from Iron Born's Millvale location last week, and it was exactly what I expected: delicious! This is the 2nd Iron Born location to open in Pittsburgh, with their first location being in the Strip District. I had planned on picking up some dinner from that location, but their website wouldn't let me place any pick-up orders there on the evening I was craving their pizza. No matter, Millvale isn't exactly much further out for me than the Strip, so I just placed my order there. Iron Born did a pretty good job of keeping me updated about the order via text messages, which was very helpful. Unlike their sister restaurant, this specific location is set up for takeout only; waiting inside for the pizza would be cramped on a typical Friday evening, and in 2020, waiting inside with other people is a huge no-no! Fortunately, all I had to do was arrive around my estimated pickup time and wait in the car for the confirmation text. Then it was a quick stroll from the car to the shop, and I had my food in hand! I had ordered Iron Born's fabulous Detroit-style pizza and a side of some garlic pull-apart bread. I went for the Cubano Pie this time, which is anything but traditional. This pizza has pork, ham, dill pickles, honey mustard, and Swiss cheese - all baked on top of the thick and airy Detroit-style crust that Iron Born specializes in. It's a pretty unique pie that I definitely recommend trying at least once! The pull-apart bread was fabulous as well; and I enjoyed leftovers throughout the weekend. This was a great experience all-around, from the helpful updates on my order to the tasty final result. Of course, Iron Born also offers a range of more traditional pies, so don't let the Cubano Pie scare you away if you prefer simple cheese or pepperoni pizzas! Iron Born has a decent-sized menu and allows you to create your own pizza as well, so no matter what you're craving, they can make it. I was already a big Iron Born fan, so it was nice to find out that both locations are able to deliver on the high expectations set when the concept began in Smallman Galley. I have never had Detroit style pizza, or even deep dish for that matter, but this is really good pizza! I order delivery today via UberEats and it arrived within a reasonable amount of time. The order consisted of a forager pie and a cannoli. I must say, I'm not usually a fan of thicker crust pizzas. Normally, I prefer a thin and crunchy pie. However, the forager pie made me reconsider this opinion. The bottom is crispy and buttery. The edges are cheesy and crispy as well. Soo good! And, the base itself is like a delicious, fluffy focaccia bread. The toppings are plentiful, too. Honey is subtle and not overpowering, but a great touch. Love the ricotta and the high quality herbs. Mushrooms are well cooked, but I would have liked more of them. The cannoli was only $2 and it was quite large. A little bit soggy, but the inside was creamy and subtly sweet. Quite good! If I was being picky, the price for the pizza is a little expensive given the size. However, it is much higher quality than the competition, which makes up for the smaller portions in my opinion. All in all, this is a great introduction to deep dish or Detroit style pizza. I'm glad there is a pizza shop in Pittsburgh offering this style of pie (I rate this place a 4.5/5). This is probably the 3rd time I've eaten here and each time I'm blown away again by how good the pizza is. I myself am normally a fan of NY style thinner pizza, but this place is my only exception! Last night I had their Buffalo chicken pizza and if I wasn't splitting it- I would have eaten the whole thing myself. We first had IB when they were up and coming at Federal Galley in the Strip. I think they just keep getting better each time we indulge. We couldn't pick just one pie so we went with the traditional red pie (knowing that it is scrumptious and encrusted in melted cheese). We added on the mushroom pie, and let me tell you this is ny new favorite. The shroom pie has a sweet taste on first bite and the savory side comes out from the ricotta on top. It is so well balanced there wasn't much leftover....heck we ate it in the car on the ride home because well that's what you do with hot pizza!! read more

My order was ready in about 25 minutes. We went with the spicy pizza and the white pizza. Both were just to die for. The spicy pizza had the perfect amount of spice, some delicious peppers, lots of good sauce and of course the perfect baked on cheesy crust. The Millvale location is exclusively take-out and it features a small comfortable room where you can wait for your order. The menu is posted on the wall, and there's lots to choose from, or you can build your own. While mostly pizza, there are some sandwiches as well. I ordered the Kale Pie, made with Garlic Cream, Sweet Sausage, Roasted Kale, Fingerling Potatoes, and Parmesan. Delicious pizza, made fresh to your order. I can't describe my love for good pizza in words... The pizza crust of iron born looked interesting and given the high ratings, I finally ordered in from this spot. Upon reading through the descriptions, the white pie caught my attention. The ingredients sounded very interesting with onion jam and lemon arugula. I'm not a fan of white pies in general and I love the marinara sauce, but this time around, I made an exception. My order arrived on time and the size was somewhat small (you get an 8 slice pizza elsewhere for this price). However, the pizza tasted amazing! I liked the delicate balance of sweet and savory flavors. I never appreciated dollops of ricotta cheese on a pizza and this time was no exception. I never really understood the point of ricotta cheese, it has no taste whatsoever. Regardless, I liked this pizza. One of my favorite places in the 'burgh. I'm glad to see they're doing well enough to have a spot outside of Smallman Galley. Living in Bloomfield we often walk to Millvale and did so when we picked up our first pie from the new location. It's a great way to work off the guilt of those delicious calories. However we did take a car service home so the pizza would still be warm and fresh. And, it was. Love the deep dish style. The Detroit Red Top has got to be my favorite by far.
