Had heard about this restaurant and was out with a girlfriend and we decided to give it a try for lunch. We stepped in and it was like stepping back in time. Felt like we entered a coffee shop/diner from the 50's and 60's. Staff was warm, friendly, and inviting. Our waitress remind me if Flo's and I was waiting for Flo to holler "Kiss my grits"... I have to keep reminding myself this is not the south. Many of the locals were on a first name basis with staff which only added to the charm. Portion sizes were huge and prices were reasonable. Stopped into the Iron Kettle for breakfast. The place was 3/4 full but we were able to find a booth near the grill. Waitress brought us coffee and we looked through the menus that were in a holder at the table. Ordered a Reuben omelette - I'd never heard of such a thing before so decided to try it. Wow the flavors all worked great. Would definitely recommend to others that haven't had it to give it a try. Coffee was great, good service and whomever is working the grill is crazy good. read more

There aren't many places to get breakfast in Rome, especially on Sundays. Still, I would t go back. Eggs fried in tasteless grease, salty soft bread toast, slooowww service. Nothing at all to recommend this restaurant except that it is open. Everyone is nice enough though, and the servers seem to be dedicated. But something is amiss with management. read more

Awesome breakfast joint! We came in and I loved their breakfast. Our server was excellent and attentive. The food was really great and they kept my coffee cup filled, too. The one drawback is that they have squeezed a bunch of tables into a small space. And while generally clean the building is old and dated. We were in town for some business, and I asked the navigator to find us some breakfast. He found the Iron Kettle, and it was such a good find that I paid for his breakfast. It is a little mom and pop diner-type place, with the right trimmings for that style. I saw something I had never heard of on the menu, so of course I had to try it. They had a Reuben omelette, and I have had thousands of omelettes in my life, but this one may have been the best I've ever had. It was savory as hell, and tangy and wonderful. I can't let this be the only time I have it. They also had muffins that they split and grill up, and then add some butter. I enjoyed my corn muffin a lot. I'm certain it was homemade. I forgot to look at what my navigator had, but he said it was perfect. But that omelette . . . I believe I may dream about that thing. If I am in Rome, New York again, I will make sure I stop here. EDIT: I forgot one thing. The service was perfect. Timely and attentive. People who are looking to become waiters should take a master-class from the lady who was our server. Used to be my favorite breakfast place. I have probably eaten here over 100x in my life -literally. Not like the good ol' days. SLOW. Also, not great to have your order questioned. "We are busy. Adorable spot with an open kitchen surrounded by a little bar for solo diners. A few booths up front and a lovely seating area in the back for larger parties. The service was friendly and swift! Everything was very reasonably priced (cash only) and the meal came with a coffee/tea and juice! I'm so used to being charged if you want both so this was awesome to me!! Yea breakfast is easy to make but they made it superbly! Wonderfully seasoned with the correct ratio of butter on the oh so precarious level of greasy and filling. Was very busy when I was here today and the waitresses and cook (Tim) were doing everything they could to get food out fast and fresh. The Iron Kettle is a place I remember fondly from my childhood. My grandmother used to love this place, and I specifically remember one day going here and getting an excellent chicken parmesan. Unfortunately, even this nostalgia can not pull the Iron Kettle's rating up for me. My mother and I went here a few weeks back, and I was shocked at how poor the service was. We were told to seat ourselves, but when we did we were surprised - the menus were already on the table. The servers serve you and take your order over a half wall, and when she wasn't leaning over our table, she was reading and ignoring the customers. Completely uninterested in anything the customers were doing. And, for the most part, I could take an aloof, but not rude server if the food was good. Unfortunately, this was not the case either. The pancakes were incredibly dry, the toast was soggy, my mother said her eggs were not fully cooked, and the only reason the sausage was good is because all they really had to do was heat it up. Not to mention, the decor in this restaurant is just unpleasant - and sadly, I'm not referring to jarring colors or bad design choices. The walls are littered in decor that insults the customers. One such is a sign that reads, "This is not Burger King. You do not get it your way. You take it my way or you get none at all." "There will be a $10 charge for complaining." There were at least 6-ish signs of these nature, stating that if the customer complained they would pay a fee or get nothing (of course, not actual fees or threats). Now, humorous as they may be to have back in the kitchen out of sight of customers (cooks and servers need a good laugh, too!), having these next to tables is just unprofessional. Don't think I'll be returning, which is unfortunate because I remember this place fondly. Perhaps some new staff, recipes, and decor would make this a better place to dine. read more

21sf of Nov. 17 Absolute waste. I ordered a steak and eggs, what showed up on my plate was a 3 or 4 oz thin cut flank steak. When i asked what it was they said how did you order it? I said rare and she said that's a rare steak and walks away. Then likes and says its an 8oz ribeye she saw them cut, then changes her mind that its a 4oz steak in a freezer pack and i see the pack. I lived in the rome area for a long time, but never went to the Iron Kettle growing up. I recently went there around 11 am. The Iron kettle serves breakfast all day. I had a grilled cheese (1.75) and fries (1.00) the portions were large. I would recommend this place, as they keep the prices low, quality high. read more

Went there this morning with a friend, since several co-workers who grew up in the area swear by their breakfasts. In general, the experience was good, but unremarkable. Service was fast despite a full house when we walked in, and the food was good. The menu is all the basic diner food...except for the coconut-pecan waffle we had. Breakfast at the kettle is always good and cheap. I always try to bring someone who hasn't been and they're always impressed by the quality of food and service for the price.
