Throughout our dining experience at Iron Roost, I was wavering between a three-star and a four-star review. Our first impressions were that the atmosphere was cute and cozy, and that the staff was very friendly ... definitely off to a great start. I started leaning more toward three stars when I noticed that they still seem to be working out some of the kinks related to what I assume is an influx of business due to their recent Groupon deal. It took the girl at the register a little while to process our Groupon. This didn't bother me at all (I was in no rush), but I felt bad for the very long line of customers that was building up behind me. Another concern that I had was that it appears that for a dine-in restaurant, they might not have enough seating to properly accommodate their customer traffic. After my husband and I placed our order, we took our number and our coffees over to the only available seat, which was a couch with a coffee table. We were a bit disheartened that this was the only seat we could find, as the prospect of having to eat our breakfasts either off of our laps or awkwardly hunched over a coffee table really wasn't appealing. Of course, I would imagine it could be a lot worse for all those people who were behind us in line, who might find themselves with plates of food and no place to sit. In the end, we saw someone getting up and rushed over right away to take their table. It worked out, but the whole process stressed me out, which is obviously not what I'm looking for in Sunday brunch. Right now you might be asking yourself ... if the lack of seating at this restaurant annoyed you so much, why give them a four-star review? Well, the answer to that is so simple that it only takes two words: Nutella waffles. I know; I'm easy. Let's be honest though; it's pretty much a fact that Nutella makes everything better. I also sampled my husband's Fiesta with home fries, and while I would never in a million years regret ordering waffles with Nutella, hubby's plate was pretty amazing too. The avocado was perfectly ripe, and the salsa was actually pretty good (and this is from the standpoint of someone who has lived in the Southwest for a decade). We also really enjoyed their dark roast coffee. It was rich and strong, but not overly so. So in the end, we had a great breakfast after all. Despite our initial reservations, the staff at Iron Roost can definitely expect to see our smiling faces again. read more

I tried three different coffee blends and thought each one was great. I even bought a bag of coffee beans to take home. Visited the Iron Roost on a recommendation from a friend. Was very hyped all week from checking out their menu online. Decided to go with the blueberry waffle and my husband got the egg sandwich in between waffles. He enjoyed his and I loved my waffle. The Nutty Nilla (hazelnut and vanilla) coffee was delicious. The large ice coffee though, is more of a medium. For 2 people to eat, our bill came to $35 which seems excessive for breakfast. As others mentioned the seating is odd in that you have to wait (we waited ~35 minutes), then you jump in line to order at the counter and are then seated and served Panera style. We were informed you can download an app called No Wait and join the line there, so you don't have to come into the restaurant until it's your turn. We felt this information should have been displayed on their website or FB page, both of which we reviewed before visiting. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the staff were friendly. We were able to order coffees while we waited and paid for them with our check when we ordered. Bottom line, definitely check it out if you're in the area. Not sure I would make the 40 minute drive for it again unless it was along my way. read more

My fiancee and I stayed in Ballston Spa a few weeks ago for a family event and were in search of a good breakfast/brunch place. Needless to say - we found it! The coffee is very good, but the food is the real shining star here. I had a bacon, egg and cheese on a waffle, which sounds rather ordinary, but "ordinary" is not a word to use here. The waffle was done perfectly, the bacon had just the right flavor, and you really can't go wrong with eggs, cheese and syrup! My meal was served with potatoes which were pretty good as well. My fiancee had the Southwestern Fiesta which was incredible as well. Many breakfast/brunch places don't always get it right when you mix bread, eggs and veggies - usually the bread/waffle, etc. gets soggy, or the veggies aren't all that good - but this was a really perfect balance and delicious too! The staff was all very friendly and I honestly don't get negative comments regarding service or their ordering system. It's a small location but they leave plenty of space to add milk, sugar, etc. to your coffee without getting in the way of diners or people waiting on line. Overall a really great experience and we will definitely be back the next time we travel upstate! read more

Very delicious waffles and coffee from this place. I couldn't pick between sweet and savory so I went with one of each. Their store is well decorated and modern as well. They have a very strange way of seating you - you have to wait on a list to be able to counter order and pick your own table, instead of just waiting and being seated like at a normal restaurant. This resulted in two waits - one to be able to wait in line, then the normal line and waiting for the food to be ready. On a Sunday morning we ended up waiting almost 2 hours from walking in the first time to actually consuming our food. They also asked if we wanted a side with our waffles in such a way that implied it was included, but it in fact was not. The sides cost extra. If they improve the seating and ordering process this place could easily be five stars. read more

Came here one Sunday morning with my friends. I understand that this is not a full-service restaurant but my expectations were certainly not met and I would never go again. The main reason you go to a restaurant is to eat good food and I just did not feel that that was the case here. I got the early riser meal and the potatoes were literally huge chunks of potatoes as if they had just cut a potato in half and put it on my plate. they were burned black as well. There was absolutely no seasoning on the potatoes and they were cold so I think they were from the day before. The eggs and toast were fine nothing spectacular. I also got coffee which was not refilled nor did anyone check on me after being served to see if I needed anything. Won't be coming here again! read more

Incredible waffles, great coffee, cute location and charm. I love the wait list app, high recommend or count on waiting. I built my own wattle with strawberries and whipped cream and although itakes a lovely presentation, next time I will order them on side as it makes waffle soggy. I am a dipper so that makes sense to me, if you don't usually dip your syrup leave it alone. My husband got steel cut oatmeal with fresh blueberries and almonds and was delicious. I was traveling to the Albany area for work and stopped by for food before I hit the road. The place was packed on a Wednesday morning. Signs of a good place! I got the front street philly. I've never had something like it before. It melted in your mouth. It was filling and tasty. The sauce it came with was very good. Inside the place has a cool ambiance to it. Has a strong local feel and incredibly comfortable. I would reccomend Iron Roost to anyone traveling to the area! read more

I know that I'm in the minority... and I SO wanted to love this place. I'll start with the good. It's super cute. They have appealing looking sweets and treats (full discloser: we didn't try any of them). And a cute shopping section. I loved the signs on the bathrooms - very cute. BUT, we went there for breakfast and mine was disappointing. I don't care for swiss cheese so I didn't try the quiche of the day; which I originally wanted. I didn't want the french toast because it seemed like it would be too sweet. I wasn't in the mood for a sandwich so I ordered what I thought was fool proof - the Early Riser - it's just eggs, meat, homefries, and toast - and I ordered a black iced tea (a pretty standard drink). The iced tea was disgusting. I can usually survive any iced tea, but this tea, I didn't even drink. I would have thought that such a boutique looking place would have at least a freshly brewed, quality tea; or more likely something high end, but this was some sort of premade or mix or I don't even know. My husband ordered an Orange Juice and again, I would have thought they would have a fresh squeezed orange juice but it was a bottle from the cooler. As for the eggs - they were fine - over medium, done just fine. The Homefries were potatoes seasoned in something with no flavor and only added heat (husband confirmed this); no peppers or onions, which would have been fine if there was any flavor. The sausage was unique - I don't know if I cared for it or not though - it was just different. And then toast, which is hard to screw up. They put a garnish of a slice of strawberry and a slice of orange - those were fantastic! They should focus on fruit salads! Husband's Southwest Fiesta burrito was fine but the "waffle wedge" "tortilla" was nothing special. read more

Came across this gem thanks to Yelp. I am from South Florida and visit the Upstate NY area on my family vacation every summer. I dream about Iron Roost until my next visit. I truly wish Soflo had a Iron Roost of their own. The coffee is unbelievable and my mom always makes sure to stock up on beans to bring back home. The yogurt waffle is my favorite!! I'm so excited that in a week, I'm going to be living only two blocks from the Iron Roost. I was so happy to find out that they have a vegan menu. The waffles did not disappoint. They taste just as good as their dairy-laden competitors. The fruit topping was so fresh and the potatoes were so good. They had a very savory and smoky flavor, kind of like they had been cooked over a campfire. Everything was delicious. The portions were great for the price and our server was friendly and welcoming. Staff and service were very pleasant and energetic, so far it looked to be going well. We ordered the Waffles with Whipped cream and the Quiche(today was ham and swiss) with seasoned home fries. I am going to say that maybe it was the time that we ate there, around 1 pm, but the French toast was definitely not fresh. It tasted like it had been sitting around and someone warmed it up before serving. Had very little flavor and was spongy. The quiche was not much better and the Home fries were definitely made early in the morning and tasted and felt to the tongue that they had been sitting under a hot lamp for hours. I was truly upset as we have been wanting to try this place for a few years. I just think if the food had been made fresh the experience would have been so much better. The two stars are for the Staff and the coffee which was excellent. The restaurant itself is quaint and half of it has that old town store feel. Probably won't be going back. Pretty nice place. Great coffee, great food and courteous staff. A bit on the pricey side but it is worth it for what you get as a meal. I ordered the chicken waffle sandwich. It came with coleslaw, a giant pickle and the sandwich was huge, i almost could not finish it. The coffee is delicious too, it is different from what I usually drink, it was smooth. Our first time at the the Iron Roost, and it will certainly not be our last. First, it's ascetically beautiful in every way, second, the staff was warm and friendly and finally, the food was gorgeous to look at and delicious to eat. Walking in you at greeted and told the wait time, then you leave your cell phone number. Now instead of waiting you can go and enjoy Ballston Spa. PERFECT!! We only waited twenty minutes, so we stayed inside. One you are text, you go to the counter, place your order and get your how beverages. My husband got hot chocolate and I a decaf nutty nilla; we loved them! Our table was a high top top by the window, and it was warm and felt private even though we were with everyone else in the dining room. I got the bananas foster, and my husband had the BLT work an egg. For me, the whipped cream made my day, it was so beautifully different; and for my husband, he loved how fresh it all was and tasted.
