Ahhhh, how I love these sit down diners when on a road trip!! This diner is also a truck stop which is pretty unique (and open 24hrs). They have a large convenient style store in the same building. Now the diner itself is clean, friendly servers and front counter staff. The food here is pretty good 9.5/10. While your food does come out in a timely manner, don't expect it to come out in a flash. This is the kind of diner where you come to relax and not rush anything. So pretty much laid back. I had the chicken fried steak which came out good. Crispy, juicy, and nice creamy gravy to top it all off. The garlic bread was fresh and buttery (yummy). The soups that are complimentary with some orders (salads as well) are delicious. 2 soups to choose from (chicken tortilla soup, and beef stew) both delicious. Overall, fresh American comfort food at reasonable prices and friendly staff. omg. we had never eaten at an iron skillet before. unfortunately, there are only 4 in california and none of them close to home or our regular travel routes. hubby had a denver omelette - loaded with fresh baked ham chunks. he asked for one slice of toast and guess what, megan listened and gave him one slice of toast. :) i had some chicken noodle soup which was oh so delicious with big chunks of solid chicken, salad bar with lots of my favorite items, all fresh! and a blt wrap. they didn't scrimp on the bacon, the turkey was fresh. it was totally awesome. read more

This was our first Iron Skillet experience and probably the last. You can get soup and salad, here, but you don't see that until you've already been through the buffet line. At 12:30, most meal selections were lukewarm, with only one or two servings remaining. Our vegetable choices amounted to some overcooked green beans. The salad bar, which is what I was mostly interested in, consisted of a few pieces of chopped head lettuce floating in a large bowl of cold water plus a choice of various sad-looking toppings. The "iron skillet" theme sounds appealing, but what it amounts to is cast aluminum serving plates with handles. Some people might find this appealing, but it assures that if your food was ever hot it won't stay that way for long. There aren't a lot of on-the-road choices with a salad bar and if they spruced theirs up a little, the restaurant might be a good soup and salad choice. Chilled aluminum salad bowls aren't such a bad idea. read more

We were staying across the street at a hotel. The Iron Skillet was recommended. We were sorely disappointed. We decided on the buffet. It wasn't even 6pm yet, so we assumed the food would be fresh - it wasn't! The breads and desserts were dry! The casseroles/mac cheese were crusted over and almost gone, the veggies were limp and overcooked, the roast beef was tough and dry. The only good thing was the fresh salad bar. Used to be a fairly decent place to eat... only decent item on the buffet was the very generic salad bar. The mash potatoes were OK... but how can you ruin those ? The rest of the buffet was YUCK ! ended up being $36 for two. Maybe the menu food is better. read more

So we stopped in here on our way home from Oregon. We opted to go for the buffet. There was a lot of comfort food selections here like stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey, pot roast, corn bread, broccoli, corn, green beans, fried chicken and ham... all very good. I was pleasantly surprised since I haven't been impressed with any buffets outside of the ones at Las Vegas... and especially since this one is in a very small town off hwy 5 in Northern California...but it was pretty good and filling too! read more

It is truck stop food, so you really cannot expect much. They service is usually pretty good. The last time my family ate there is was bad though. My husband and mother had the pot roast and they both got sick that night. They had not eaten anything the same prior that day so one could only assume it was the roast. I had a good meal on the other hand. This one bad experience will not keep us from going back, we will just not be ordering the roast ever again. read more

This past Saturday I drove down to Redding to meet a client and what better place to grab breakfast out in the boonies than at a truck stop? I always look for chicken fried steak wherever I go and Iron Skillet did not dissappoint. The chicken fried steak was lightly breaded and had a good amount of steak to breadding ratio. With the 2 pieces of toast it ended up being a huge meal I was unable to finish. The staff was very friendly and very attentive. While travelling from Paradise to Oregon we decided to try the buffet at the Iron Skillet in Corning...Right away we noticed a large amount of food on the floor around the buffet area that the employees didn't seem to notice. We looked for a table but none of the empty ones were cleaned off ..so we waited. We stood and watched for 10 minutes an a customer waited at the register to pay.Again no one seemed to notice them as they walked past them several times. The servers really didn't have much to do but managed to look busy. Mostly everyone we saw were eating buffet so there were no orders to be taken or delivered. After watching and waiting without so much as a simple greeting for 15 minutes we went to good old McDonalds across the street. Maybe OSHA will read this and make a surprise visit? Great prices, clean and friendly. We had top sirloin steak and liver with onions. These included a trip to the salad soup bar. Very tasty chicken noodle soup- homemade. Portion sizes hood and they have half portions which is really nice. read more

Awesome place to eat we had T-Bones and Chicken Alfredo and it was Amazingly GREAT!! They also have buffet and salad bar with soup. We were passing through on our way to Yreka and decided to stop here very early for breakfast. The food was really good and served impressively fast. I had huevos rancheros and can say nothing but good things about it, which means alot coming from me since I am somewhat of a snob when it comes to huevos rancheros! There were plenty of options to choose from on the menu, as well as the buffet, and it was very affordable! The waitress was friendly and kept my coffee cup full, and the restaurant was clean and tidy. The historical local photography on the walls was interesting to look at. The connected shop(s) were also fun to look at, with plenty of souvenirs, trinkets, gifts, and practical items as well. I wish I was a local, I'd come here all the time! read more

Stopped for gas and walked over to iron skillet for a to go dinner. I really wanted a salad but there were no salads on the menu They did have a salad bar but I didn't want to make it (to much work for a salad). So the girl at the counter said she would make me one! We (family of 5) were coming back from our weekend camping and decided to stop by to fill up our trucks tank and to a do a brief stop at the restroom. We needed a large parking spot because we had a 26 feet trailer, so this gas station was perfect for us! We planned to have our lunch across the street at Chevis' So, when we came into the store, we noticed they had a restaurant there too! We decided to give it a try, judging them by the way the place looked tight and clean. So we went to the buffet, though they have a nice menu too. We were served by SONIA, a very attentive and nice lady. We were very happy with the way she treat us and served us! What a clean place (thumbs up to the restrooms too), very attentive workers, and delicious homemade food!!! The chicken enchilada was a wow dish!!! Definitely the food was HOMEMADE!!! I have been stopping by the Iron Skillet regularly for the past two years during the dinner shift. I've always been given especially great service by Erin, Meagan and Jamie, their wait staff is the best. Their on duty managers also jump right in if they get busy.They always take care me and their other customers needs and I have seem them go the extra mile for a customer many times. Iron Skillets food is also right up there. It may not be a New York 5 star restaurant but for a country boy like me, it rates high in my book. read more

My husband and I stopped here on the way home from a trip to the mountains. I was surprised to find they had a buffet. Waitress was very attentive and service was great. Their menu is very large. My husband had a bacon cheeseburger, which he loved and it was certainly big enough. I decided to go for the buffet. They were just setting out the dinner buffet, so I figured at least I was getting fresh food. It was steak and shrimp the waitress told me. How could I pass that up? Salad bar was just ok. Not bad, but nothing to get too excited about. The dressing was a little on the runny side and so didn't have as much flavor as I would have liked. But the veggies were fresh. I had a scoop of the clam chowder. It was better than I expected, good sized clams and had a good flavor. Only complaint would be that it was very salty. On the buffet were a couple of kind of gross looking casseroles that I skipped. I was a little disappointed that the only kind of shrimp offered was the deep fried breaded little shrimps. But they weren't bad. My steak was not horrible. I didn't expect it to be amazing, of course it was a low grade cut. The plus was it was not overcooked. But it was not seasoned at all. It was as bland as could be. I had to make it editable with salt & A1. They sell their own special brand of seasoning....they should have used some on the steak! The mashed potatoes and gravy were just ok. Again, not horrible, but not great. If we ever go back I will order off the menu & add just the salad bar instead of the buffet dinner. read more

It was okay for a truck stop type of place. I had the patty melt which was pretty good, my eating partner had the bacon cheeseburger and raspberry lemonade. The report is the raspberry lemonade was good, the burger needed more bacon. If I were to drive through this town again, I probably would not eat here. read more
