The November season at the Skillet.
    Al M.

This is Indiana...unvarnished and unpretentious...offering honest, hearty, down-home food just steps off the interstate. Stopped in at the Skillet for a quick lunch while traveling on business in the Hoosier state. Once seated, my co-worker and I were welcomed by the manager with a genuinely warm Indiana greeting and smile. Very nice touch! Other restaurants would be well served to take a page out of the Iron Skillet's book. Nice people here in the Heartland. My co-worker and I decided to jump for the bountifully stocked salad bar and lunch buffet as soon as we saw the roasted chicken and real mashed potatoes. Serving ourselves on pewter skillets doubling as plates, we loaded up for what promised to be a lunch that delivered big on both food and service...well in excess of Yelp's paltry 2.5 composite rating when we walked through the door (based on just 3 Reviews). It is satisfying knowing that as I post this 4-star review, the Skillet's overall Yelp rating will climb to a solid 3 stars. To me, the Skillet was nothing less than a 4-star experience all day long.

Salad bar and buffet is pitiful, food was dry and stale. Order of the menu and stay away from the buffet.

Destination 814 (Lagrange, IN) - "modern" bar in Amish county…read more Made a successful trip to try Destination 814 in Lagrange. We have tried dropping in here during a busy Friday or Saturday dinner hour. The wait can be very long as Destination 814 is rather popular in these parts. You can find Destination 814 near the downtown Lagrange area. Head north on IN 3 or I69 about an hour. Destination 814 is a kind of a "modern" bar located in a more rural-small town area. The inside would remind you of a typical small sports bar (see pictures). The whole place is rather small but nicely decorated with sports stuff. The bar is very attractive - lots of back lit bottles to entice you. It only seats about 11 people. The dining room seats about 46 people. It can handle a couple groups of 6-8 people. There is an outdoor area that will seat about 16 people. The team here was very friendly and hustled the refills and food. They had plenty of help on this night. The menu is not overly large but it seem to have something for everyone (see picture). Salads, burgers, wraps, flatbreads and a variety of entrees are reasonably priced in the $15-20 range. They have a large menu for bourbons, whiskeys, beers and cocktails. Note that none of the drinks have prices - which is becoming more common place. We started with the garlic buns. These are pretty popular and have good reviews for good reasons. They are soft and buttery with a slight garlic taste. The beer cheese had a nice taste and thickness. Easy to dip. Not a strong cheese flavor. My wife had the Crab Rangoon flatbread. She really liked the amount of crab in the sauce. The crunchy wontons were a nice add. The sweet Asian chili sauce was fairly standard. The buttered chicken flatbread (Indian style) sounded delicious as well. My cod basket was very good. Three surprisingly large pieces of fish amongst French fries. The cod was fresh tasting and flaky. The batter was thin and stuck to the fish well. Not a lot of distinguishable seasoning in the batter. The tartar sauce was slightly sweet mayo mixture with a very mild dill taste. The fries were a little bit thicker in size and had a slight crisp. The seasoning gave you some salty southwest styling. Overall, I would encourage you to drop in and try Destination 814. Go early, lunch to 5p, if you are making a special trip...if you want to avoid the big crowd.

I had the Mahi salad, a friend had the boom boom shrimp salad, and another had chicken tenders! All were fantastic. The salads would rival any high end restaurant with plenty of toppings and great lettuces...no iceberg or cheap bagged salad here. The piece of mahi was tender, warm, and flavorful. And the homemade blue cheese dressing was a bonus. The restaurant was tastefully decorated and the waiter was phenomenal...I will gladly drive the hour from home to eat here again! Yay!! Love to see great restaurants in small towns.

***UPDATE*** Stopped…read moreback in. Ordered the "Dirty Martini Burger." Hey! Morenci Pub! Here's your fifth star!! This amazing burger, with its olive aioli, manages to walk that tight rope between " unique specialty burger," and "traditional American cheeseburger" perfectly. It was awesome. So the first line of my original review is wrong. At this point I am advocating that you roll all the way out to Morenci just for a burger! ***ORIGINAL REVIEW*** No. I'm not advocating that you roll all the way out to Morenci just for a burger...BUT, if you happen to be passing through town, and you're hungry, you should definitely stop here. Not including the five (5!!!) dispensaries in this little southern Michigan burg, I think the pub is the only place in town devoted to serving mind altering substances...and burgers. "The Works" (see pic) comes with fries and all the standard burger toppings. It's simple, it's basic, and it is a burger TOTALLY done right! Perfectly cooked patty? Yep. Fresh veggies? Perfect combo of condiments? You got it. Fresh soft brioche bun. Sho'nuff. Draft beer? Basic American waterbeer, and, Two Hearts. More stuff available in bottles, but I didn't check these out. Atmosphere: Damn, I walk into what I figured was going to be a shitkicker bar, and California Love is playing. Follow that with Lil' Wayne. Perfect. I didn't expect that. This place is very cozy, and although I was definitely an outsider, I wasn't treated that way. Everybody was friendly. So...would I personally drive all the way back out here just for a burger and a Coors light?? Yeah. I would. The Morenci pub may not be perfect, but it's perfect for what it is! 4 stars! I'm planning to try some more of the food...maybe a fifth star is on the way.

I got an aloha pizza, I think that the chicken could have been "factory prepared chicken chunks", but it didn't matter because all the topping together made for a perfect harmony of flavors. My only thought was what if it had a sprinkle of cinnamon. Richelle got the pepperoni rolls, or you might as well call them Stromboli. The garlic butter is a good choice, creamy, and not salty. Richelle also got onion rings, which were good too but the ranch siracha is kicking it. The beer selection when we were there was wonderful for a hot July day, I got a Maumee Bay MacQueens cider and Richelle got a Oncore blueberry wet sprocket. Local beer, yum. Our server Alexis was very helpful, helping with beer selections, and dinner choices.
