I've heard horror stories about this truck stop restaurant franchise, but honestly I didn't I've not had a terrible ISR experience. It was my second time at a ISR. They have a basic buffet and a soup and salad bar. This time, I enjoyed the soup and salad options. The options weren't as plentiful as the other ISR location that I'd been to. As my meal, I ordered the sirloin steak and baked potato. I loved the thick, buttered toast that accompanied it. My husband ordered the Southwest Skillet, which is apparently a new item. He raved about it, and he's usually a hard one to please. He has long since recanted his initial opinion of the overall ISR franchise. Service wasn't as great at this location either. Overall, this experience wasn't horrible, but not as good as my first Iron Skillet experience. Nothing special, truck stop sell out . Used to have reserved section for on duty drivers!! Gave on duty drivers a little more attention than others so we could get back on the road!! Quaker steak and lube bought Petro and TA restaurants out. Keep changing the menu, switching the good food for crap nobody really wants. They used to have real cooks that didn't mind making an order for someone. Now all they do is open the pre-packaged crap and throw it in the microwave. Place has definitely forgotten why their here, that's why they're loosing business to fast food joints!! read more

Truck stop food at truck stop prices. If you're looking for a quick breakfast this is the place. They are sometimes slow in bringing out breakfast buffet dishes and may not have all the salad bar items out for breakfast but a friendly reminder will have the dishes brought out from the back. Mostly farmers and truck drivers here which tells you the food is pretty good. The waitresses are friendly and really do take care of you. Also note; they recently removed the one central cash register in the front for three "regional" registers in each dining area. Makes for a faster checkout process without one central checkout register and line. You can checkout with your waitress from the table. read more

Even though it's considered a truck stop the Iron Skillet restaurant inside is an excellent place to eat. Open 24 hours/365 days. Great menu choice and breakfast served all day long too.Friendly waitresses too. There's also a buffet for around $11.00 or if you'd like a soup/salad bar for around $7.00. I've had both the buffet and the soup/salad bar and both are very good. We even came here for Thanksgiving, for the buffet and it was the BEST Thanksgiving buffet bar none. It would blow any other buffet away by far. If your ever in the area give it a try. You won't be disappointed...unless your one of those fine china eatin' freaks! read more

Seemingly standard truck stop fare.. but get this, food is served on an iron skillet! I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a veggie burger on the menu, and it was pretty tasty too, but my fries could have been cooked til they weren't mealy inside. My boyfriend had a straightforward breakfast skillet (at 9pm on a Saturday). They also have a salad bar that has some hot items for those who are so inclined. The other patrons were mostly truckers with a few families here and there. Eating here reminded me that life outside of Chicago includes smoking in restaurants. Our table had a tiny B&W TV that ran on quarters and the option to have the waitress bring out a cordless phone for our conversations. Oh boy! Other fun truck stop dining novelties include: 24 hour massage, hot showers, and a movie room. All in all, eating here was uneventful but filled us up on our way to Champaign. I'd come here again, but would just as easily stop at one of the other roadside clones for my food needs. read more

This is one of the nicer Iron skillets I've been to. If there's no parking around the building, there's a huge lot across the street to the south, so there's always room. The service here has always been good and the food is pretty much the same for all of them so you know what you are getting before you go in. I like the layout here because you can go to the back and not be bothered if you want. read more

Totally terrible cooks. The girls are polite and attentive, but the meal sucked. Asked for 3 eggs, got 2. Asked for medium rare steak. Got totally rare, not even warm in the middle. Asked for grits, literally got grit soup. Never again. read more

This is a good all hours place to get a regular, sit down diner type meal. The Chicken Fried Chicken dinner was delicious. Though the soup location is a bit odd and hard to find unlike the Iron Skillet in Effingham that has it right in the middle of the room with the salad bar. One complaint is last year I ordered the pinto beans as a side and I got all liquid with almost no beans sitting at the bottom. Salad bar is very good. Service is excellent. Prices a bit high. The buffet has some good stuff like biscuits, beans, good baked chicken, soup, bread. But the meat can be bad. I had beef roast yesterday that was just horrible, even smelled like kerosene, just vile. And seafood buffet is a joke, small small shrimp and catfish in lots of breading. First time here. Stopped on way to bourbonnais. Considering there arent to many breakfast place in the area, this did the trick. Had their breakfast buffet. Nice array of breakfast food, even had fried bologna! Food was average tasting...but overall good. Loved the seperate fried onions to add to potato. Live local, been here a few times for breakfast with the wife and kids. Buffet is always a good choice, lots of choices and well stocked. Would recommend. Haven't tried the lunch or dinner so can't comment. read more

I used to go here a lot on the weekends when I would go my routinely routes. Breakfast is always great here! Lately though, I've been going to the "skillet" as my friends and I usually call it as an end of a drunken night with friends crusade. It's open 24 hours. I love being able to get corned beef hash or other breakfast for lunch. The food is pretty good. I can see how someone may not like the fact that some of the food is a bit greasy. Sometimes the wait is long for a lunch, even though I have never seen the place packed. read more

Have wanted to come here for a while. It is at a truck stop and open 24hrs. I got in just as they were packing up the breakfast buffet. It looked tasty whatever I saw was left. After having the lunch buffet, I wished I came earlier for breakfast. The food was greasy and drowned in gravy. The salad bar was limited and desserts sparse. I prefer going to my standby Coyote Cannon. However, the soup and bread was good and the staff super friendly. The menu items seem better than the lunch buffet. Never been for the breakfast or dinner buffet. Next time I will try the breakfast buffet! P.S. The bathroom was new/fancy looking and very clean. read more

When I ate here the first time, it was what Douglas Copeland called, "Marge". The food was hot and brown and there was plenty of it. It was about 2.5 stars because it is open 24/7. The second time I "ate" here, we had ordered, were sitting waiting for our food, having drank half our sodas when we got the call our grandson was taken by ambulance to the hospital. We jumped up just as the waitress brought out some food for us...soup I think. We said we need a bill our grandkid just had a seizure...she shooed us out of the place like we were storm chasers "gogogogogogogo just go, I ll take care of it honey!". We bolted from the place and drove 90 to the hospital....of course, he was fine. Scared our daughter to death, but he was fine. One day soon I have to go back there, eat, tell the manager our story and how thankful we were that some sweet waitress cared more about us and our family, then us paying for a couple drinks and soup. Yes it is technically a truck stop, but you wouldn't know it once you sit down. A great selection of down home comfort foods, served on a country skillet. They offer a huge salad/dinner buffet, but I had a chicken fried steak sandwich and it was so good I can't explain. They have great sweet tea! The service was the best I've had from any other restaurant staying in the area for seven days. The waitress I had was great and checked on our table many times and was so friendly to my daughter and I. Couldn't recommend it enough. read more

I've been going to Iron Skillet for some time, what I notice is if you get there after 7:00pm good luck, the buffet is scarce of food that is plentiful before and the food on the buffet is somewhat dried out and dessert selection is sparse (only) 1 item remaining and this night no pudding (how hard to open can) service is good but some of us work until 7:00pm and can't make it until then for diner. The choice of sit down restaurants is getting harder to find in this area I wish this one would realize that. read more

Where do I start? I arrive at the Iron Skillet restaurant and partake in the buffet. What I expected, as the Iron Skillet webpage suggests was a variety of food and dinner specialties. What I actually got was a steaming pile of dung. The selection left much to be desired. The three entrees were pork roast, chicken enchiladas, and fried chicken. That is about it. No mac n cheese, no cornbread, no nothing. Just f****** mashed potatoes. I ended up paying $12.99 to eat some crappy mashed potatoes and chicken. I plan to never visit again. I would rather eat a diseased phallus off of a chicago sidewalk for dinner. Once again Iron Skillet, you suck. read more
