Well I was here about 20 years ago and thought it was good, but overpriced. Tried it twice now in the past two weeks. Pricey? Yes. Good? No, great. Several dishes or sides (salmon, french onion soup, fried shrimp) were either best I ever had or in the discussion. Good drinks. Friendly and professional work staff. Only true negative was the surprise up charge for blue cheese dressing and the crumbles. $3 each. The cost of the dish should cover such a low cost extra. And they don't tell you, but they do have the better cherries at the bar. You have to ask. I say put them in all of the drinks. At a minimum ask me if I have a preference. We will be back and fairly often. read more

The ambiance isn't bad, slightly dated, but the excellent service makes up for it. I've dined in two or three times and ordered takeout a few times. The burgers are the best in town, though a bit pricey unless you take advantage of their half-price burger special on Wednesdays. Their Italian cream cake is absolutely killer, and the steak with French onion soup as a starter is pure perfection. Overall, it can be a little pricey, but for a small town, the food is definitely worth it unless you want to drive 30 minutes. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough! This is one of our go to restaurants! The ambience alone is worth it. Old-school boys club, low lighting, lots of wood decor, great bar, and the original dining area is definitely a place to have dinner. Vast majority of their help has been there for decades so that should tell you something! I can honestly say I do not believe I've ever had a bad meal here. Love their shrimp cocktail and escargot. This place still serves Châteaubriand! Their filet mignon is a 12oz. & melts in your mouth. On weekends they offer a filet & lobster tail special with both being very large portions not a 6oz. filet & 4-5oz. tail like most places. Wonderful place for dinner & by far better than almost anywhere around. Have to go to Chicago to find anything close IMO. read more

What went well on my last visit everything! Service is excellent and friendly. The restaurant is immaculate and the presentation is wonderfull the clean crisp white table clothes and napkins, and the table setting. Then you get soup, bread which tastes great, and a meatball appetizer. Then comes your main course, I've tried several items so far as I work my way through their menu. The steaks are excellent and taste phenomenal, like to find in the loop. Yes it's a little pricey for Beecher it's more like eating in the loop, but that's because their food is the same quality and taste as the famous restaurants downtown Chicago, so I didn't mind paying the higher costs. My husband and I ate dinner here tonight for the first time and we were so disappointed in the service. Jen was our waitress to our table of 8, but she seemed to be spread thin amongst several other tables with both large and small parties. Service was slow, and when we finally did get our $500 bill, she hand-wrote "20% tip, $100" at the bottom of it. Later we noticed at the bottom of the menu on the last page in small lettering under Desserts "18% service charge will be added on groups of 8 or more". My math calculates that 18% of $500 is $90, not $100. We then asked her if we could get 4 separate checks to make figuring out everyone's portion easier, which she did eventually provide, but when I left her the amount owed in cash, she came up to me in front of everyone at my table and called me out on not including a tip. I told her I wasn't done figuring out our tip, we were still sitting around the table talking, I still planned on leaving her one. She then left the check holder with my receipt on the table in front of me and walked away. When my party and I were exiting the restaurant, I quickly stopped in the restroom. As I was coming down the stairs afterwards to join my party, they told me Jen had come looking for me, all upset, telling everyone in my party standing there "she did not leave any tip" but then quickly retracted her accusation after she looked closer behind the receipt in the check holder where there was in fact a tip, but then rudely added "oh here it is, but it's not 20%". My son-in-law went back in and spoke with the manager about what just happened, but he had a very laid-back, not-too-concerned kind of attitude. I felt it was very rude for Jen to call me out like that in front of everyone, AND run after me as I was leaving the restaurant, all for a 20% tip she presumed she deserved, when in fact she was only due 18. Needless to say we won't be going back there again, and if we do, we won't be seated in Jen's section. read more

We used to rave to others about this restraunt, having been there several times over the years. Today was my last. The pathetic /deceptive billing practices they choose to operate warrants scrutiny. Numerous up charges on salad dressing and french onion soup. My wife ordered the filet and chose soup instead of salad. Extra charge for soup on the bill ($10) . Was charged for a large bowl instead of a cup which should have been in lieu of the salad. I got the salad with blue cheese. Extra charge ($6 - $3 for dressing, $3 for a teaspoon of blue cheese crumbles at best). No mention by the server of extra charges for these items.. Waiter constantly pushing drinks and tea and coffee, etc. I declined. Got the bill noticed 2.5% charge for credit card plus the other up charges. As we left I decided to question all of these charges. The half wit hostess said I should have read the menu...these are clearly outlined. Given this place is so run down, you will need your own lighting to read the menu. Dump. This place is not worth the time or travel. Food is just mediocre. They seem to feel they are above the rest for a nickel dime joint. It's not the cost of the items I have mentioned, but rather the cheap and deceptive tactics they use to pull it off. I know for sure we are done with them and will be passing the word. This is a fair and honest review!! read more

A great celebration for a 50th bday. All 13 of us had fabulous meals, but the halibut and salmon were especially delicious.

My husband & I finally made time to try this place after hearing rave reviews for years. We arrived at 6:00 and were still not seated at 7:00 but two spots opened up at the bar, so we took them. Ordered drinks and waited another 10 minutes for a menu. 15 mins later the waiter shows up. We place our order and wait another hour for our food. The Bread & complimentary meatballs were terrible. The house salad was the worst plate of warm iceberg I've ever been served. French onion soup was good. Husband's ribeye was cooked well but lacked seasoning and my scallops were covered in mushy breadcrumbs, Can't believe we wasted 2&1/2 hours on this mediocre dining experience. I simply can not understand how this place is so busy, we won't be back. read more

First hearing of this restaurant in very south suburbs. I went with another couple for 6pm reservations on a Saturday evening. The place was packed with people waiting for a table. The name of this place is deceiving and so is the outside of the building. This is a supper club establishment and worthy of every praise. The food and service was high line A+. Grew up around this place and am an avid restaurant goer. But somehow just visited the Princess Cafe for the first time. WOW. I can a absolutely see why this place has been around for almost 50 years. We were a party of 5; 3 steak orders, a cheeseburger and a parsley shrimp. All were great. My husband got a special - a bone in ribeye and said it could have used a tad more seasoning. No major issue and He would have easily ignored it BUT for a $68 every little thing counts. This is the one and only reason this isn't a 5 star review. The vibe of this place is SO good - dark, cozy, intimate. And the service - omg. Maybe the best I've ever experienced. Usually they are real good. But I went there one evening and nobody came to my table to wait on me. I had a reservation and they were 45 minutes late to seat me. I waited another 20 minutes for service, and I received none. I was hungry. I had to get up and leave. I know they were busy but people were being seated ahead of me who had reservation times after me, I heard. Maybe because I was dining alone. I'm sorry to post a negative review. Tonight we went to what was formerly one of our favorite restaurants. We have to drive 45 miles to get there. My Dover sole was cold and the broccoli was so cold that when I added part of a tab of butter, it still hadn't melted when we left. I didn't ask the waitress to warm my food up because then either my husband's salmon would have gotten cold or he would have been eating alone. I paid the bill and left a 20% tip. it wasn't the waitress's fault. However I thought it would be appropriate to let the hostess know on my way out. Her response was "there is no way that fish was cold!". What? She didn't taste my fish. How could she know? We brought 3/4 of my meal home so that I can warm it up tomorrow for my lunch, however we won't be back to The Princess. Too far to drive for a cold meal and a cold shoulder! read more

Wonderful Birthday Dinner here. It was a great night out with friends. If you like a spread out evening, this is the place to go. We started at 6:30 and were done at 10:30. Everything was amazing. Escargot, Lobster, Bone In Ribeye, Lamb Chops, Spumoni, Dirty Martinis & the ambience was incredible. Service was impeccable as well. Can't remember our servers name though. Sorry! She was maybe late 20's Early 30's, very pretty with long dark hair. A total sweetheart. Thank you for making my birthday great. The place was packed Friday night, we could barely find a parking spot. But it's a mystery to me why the rating is only 3.5 stars. We have been coming here for more than 30 years and have never had a bad experience. Yes, service is a little on the slow side, but that is pretty much the case everywhere these days. When you are dining with friends as we were, what's the rush anyway? I had the special - veal chop, and it was simply the best meal I have had in a restaurant in a long time. Everything was cooked to perfection. The dish comes with a salad, which was very good, choice of potato (I had the garlic mashed - perfect) and steamed vegetables. The only thing I would change would perhaps be the sauce - It was bearnaise and I would have preferred hollandaise for the vegetables. Interesting because my wife had the Tournedos of beef - 2 filets served with bernaise, except it wasn't bernaise, it was hollandaise! No problem there however, she was equally enthusiastic about the dish as I was about mine. While the service was a little slow, it was very good, friendly and accommodating.
