I really want to love this place still, but I just can't. Took my mom to get coffee and a pastry on Mother's Day. Even at 8:30am, the selection is inconsistent and sparse. We got a pain suisse and two coffees. She was shocked by the high prices. I'm fine with that when the experience matches. Sadly, neither of us liked our coffees at all and literally threw them out after a few sips. They only had Stevia (vs Splenda, Equal or others), which may be what skewed the flavor for me. The pasty was good, nice and flaky. I find the staff to not be overly friendly. They had a steady line, so clearly a lot of people love this place and I have had some stellar desserts. But if I can't get a good cup of coffee, sit in a cute area (they have no inside space), I will choose another spot. read more

The location is a little out of the ways from the main shopping center, but there's plenty of parking. They don't have any indoor seating but they have plenty of outdoor seating in the form of picnic benches. We ordered a decaf Browned Butter Chocolate Chip specialty latte and a decaf Turkish Delight and a bag of Bare Knuckle beans to try later. Note: they have a discount if you pay in cash! Unfortunately the service wasn't great as they left us hanging at the ordering counter for payment and also messed up our drink order with the person behind us, so we ended up having to wait ~10 minutes. We started off by trying the cookies on top of the drink. The chocolate chip cookie was INCREDIBLY good - soft yet chewy and perfectly flavored. The pistachio cookie was also delicious as well. Their pastries and cookies were really unexpectedly good. Unfortunately the coffee was disappointing. I was expecting more of the flavor that was advertised to be stronger in the drink and it just tasted like...coffee. There wasn't anything special about it. Overall, the service was a little all over the place and the coffee itself was disappointing. If you're looking for an elevated latte that's a whole experience in itself, then Ironclad is the place for you. I frequented the Shockoe Bottom location in undergrad and grad school, so I was excited to see there is an additional location in the Short Pump now that I have relocated to the area. While I'm a little disappointed that there is no indoor seating, I understand given the nature of the building. The drive through option, of course, almost makes up for it, and I've found that the service has been consistently strong as well. That being said, you will have to shell out a few extra bucks than a drink at a chain shop, but the quality and experience mostly makes up for the slight price differential. After driving home from D.C. and halfway home I saw a drive-thru local coffee shop and thought "Oh I have to try that" because it's not too often that local coffee shops have a drive-thru attached. The lady in the drive-through was super sweet and gave me a quick rundown of all their Lattes and I ultimately settled on ordering an iced coconut and dark chocolate cookie milk latte, that comes with a cookie on top since cookie milk Lattes are one of their specialties. It was the perfect balance of sweet and strong; I'd definitely order another one. All in all, Ironclad provided a nice little road trip coffee break away from the usual Starbucks or Dunkin. I got an iced almond milk vanilla late and the coffee was sour. It was undrinkable. I received no receipt and she did not tell me my total, so when my bank account notified me of my apple pay charge i was in disbelief. For a truly undrinkable coffee I was charged $14.71. To clarify, I was not asked to tip the business, so either the coffee prices are entirely unreasonable or the worker tipped themselves 100% because fourteen dollars is ridiculous. read more

I love Ironclad, but this was my first time at this location! This location has a drive through and a walk up window. I got a turkey bacon egg and cheese sandwich. They have the sandwiches on a warmer ready to go which I was skeptical about, but man it was delicious!!! The cheese was oozing, the egg was plentiful, and the croissant was flakey yet moist. We got two of the signature winter coffees that came with bonus cookies. Yum!!!! Every single coffee I order is divine. I went here today for the first time. Purchased a drink, cinnamon bun and chocolate chip scone. The pastries looked so good. The employee asked if I wanted my drink iced or hot. I said iced. Waited for my stuff and the wait time wasn't bad at all. What was bad, was the customer that had her big hostile dog that was barking and lunging aggressively at everyone. Anyway, I got my drunk first. And it was hot not iced. Received my pastries 5 minutes later and I told the employee my drink was supposed to be iced. She said, I can give you a cup of ice you can pour the drink over. Like seriously? Took my stuff and went to work. Drink was ok, nothing special at all at the price of $6.50 for an extremely tiny cup. The scone looked so good and I decided to eat that first. Took a corner bite where it was crispy and it was ok. Took 2 more bites and I noticed it tasted weird. I broke it open and it was raw inside. Looked raw, smelled raw and tasted raw. It went in the trash. I was already upset so I didn't eat the cinnamon bun until I got home. This was the first cinnamon bun that didn't have any cinnamon in it. It's just a bun with icing. What a complete waste of my money. I was pissed that I spent almost $22 for 3 items that were crappy. What made me more upset was I wasted my time because I went out of my way to go to this place. People say support smaller businesses but the experiences at some of these small businesses suck. Safe to say I will not be back here. read more

I never write reviews anymore but I had to for this one. My sister came here a week ago and the same day she sees there's a tip that was added but whoever was working didn't even give her the option to add the tip so they added the tip themselves. Ripping people off for $9 coffee and then tipping themselves!! My sister is too nice to call them because she feels bad for the workers but no, I am not so I am telling her story for her because people need to know this is not ok for any business to do. read more

Visited this coffee shop yesterday and really enjoyed it. Great baked goods and the coffee was super sweet, but good in its own yummy way. Loved my experience. I think I'm having an allergic reaction to my drink. The issue is I asked the worker for her suggestion and she gave me awesome advice and I loved the drink, but im struggling to remember the name to hunt down the ingredient list for possible allergens. So I came to the reviews to see if I could hunt it down based on ppls pics and came across reviews where the owner replied with comments and WOW this guy sounds like such a jerk. This Ironclad location in West End was kind of on the way to work, so I stopped by yesterday morning. Unfortunately, the Richmond burbs don't have amazing coffee, and Ironclad is the closest one to where I was staying. Note, this location is walk-up window only (50's ice cream shop style) or drive through. I made the mistake walking through the door because I did not know, lol. It's pretty cold in December, so I'd recommend utilizing the drive-through. BARE-KNUCKLE ESPRESSO LATTE (16 OZ) - 6.50 The 16 oz latte is a quad shot, by the way. I wanted a honey and cinnamon latte with oat milk, so... +1 for oat milk +1 for wildflower honey So the total was 8.50. I thought the latte was a good pick me up, but boy, is it expensive. I liked the espresso flavor, but not a big fan of the honey here. SAUSAGE, EGG, & PEPPERJACK BISCUIT - 8 They have breakfast sandwiches either with a bagel or biscuit. Definitely go with the biscuit! It's super buttery and delicious The biscuit was so thick, but it wasn't to dry and it was well-seasoned on its own. The pepper jack cheese was a good choice, super melty. The egg and sausage were good, but nothing amazing. Get it for the biscuit. This breakfast sandwich was pretty sizable and could definitely get you well past lunch. I wish I tried one of their specialty holiday lattes, but those were closer to 10.00, lol. I am surprised that a latte is more expensive than a sandwich (a food item with nutritious ingredients). -- EDIT: Response to Ryan O. -- I was told that the 16 oz. latte comes with a quad shot, so I don't think this is an upgrade. We are espresso snobs and this was truly delicious and not too milky or sweet (we both asked for half sweet) My husband got the cookie milk - SO unique and fun! Came here on way home from a race to grab some local coffee instead of usual Starbucks. It was a stand alone building over around a shopping center. Here's my likes and dislikes: Likes: I purchased a specialty beverage called brown butter choc chip cookie milk latte. It came with a choc chip cookie! Both were very good and different than the usual caramel macchiato I usually get. Wasn't overly sweet it was just good! I also got a sausage egg and cheese biscuit. The cheese was pepper Jack and sausage wasn't greasy it was great.. the biscuit itself was huge.. double thick compared to any other I've had. The staff was very nice and helpful too. Dislike: It's only a walk up or drive thru ordering system which on any other given day would be nice but it got to raining and if we had wanted to stay and have our orders there we would have had to sit in the car but on nice day there are spots outside where you can eat and have coffee and socialize. I get it...this is an experience and not just coffee. We stopped in after doing some shopping at Publix. My husband and daughter visited previously and were really impressed, so I was pleased to have my turn to visit. We got there at 8:30ish a.m., and there was already a line, which is a good sign. The vibe is cool with jazz music playing and the staff dressed up. When it was our turn to order, we got a Flash Brew cold brew coffee with vanilla syrup, a Cortado, which is espresso with a little steamed milk, and an espresso. After we paid, we took a seat for a little while to wait for our expertly crafted beverages. Totally worth the wait! The Cortado and espresso were smooth and complex, and my daughter loved the cold brew. While we were there we were checking out the bakery items, which looked awesome. My wife and I met up with one of her old colleagues living in the area for a quick morning bite. We walked up to order our food and were greeted appropriately as I decided on what to get. It was a beautiful day to sit outside and enjoy our order which was a matcha latte and artisan butter croissant. The owner likes to chastise and harass any customers. He also harasses customers to write good yelp reviews about the business to forge their positive reviews. Just look at yelp reviews and see for yourself. Overall it is a horrible place. The prices are insane and the food is mediocre. They rarely ever have anything you want to order even if you go early in the morning. This place has no food at 10am and then stays open til 5pm without any food? They say they sold out but more likely just lazy. What kind of dumb business strategy is this. But owner must not complain cause they still in business and it makes sense because the prices would bankrupt any customer. 12+ dollars for a crappy sandwich and 10+ dollars for coffee. Go somewhere else. There's Starbucks right next door in Publix. Don't support this racket and abusive owner. So I am from CA and price of coffe is pretty high these days, but this was the most expensive Latte I have ever paid for It was $7.05 and if you look at the pic below it was a small cup too. This is outrageous if you ask me. I normally only go to places where I can sit insie the coffee shop and enjoy the atmosphere which is what I thought this was, but unfortunately itsa drive up and you go to the window and order your drink. The coffee was good. I grabbed a bag of beans to bring home. I order a few pastries to also bring home from business trip to Richmond. We did not care for the pastries. I selected a cheddar bacon scone, which a thought was dry. A cider doughnut, it was good. A dark chocolate mint muffin, it was dry and hard on the outside, we did not eat it. This is the most inefficient coffee shop I've been to. On Saturday morning with just a few people ahead of us in line (two parties, five people), from the waiting to order to actually receiving our one drink took almost 45 minutes. I don't expect Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks fast but it's wild to have so many baristas working and for it to take so long to get a single beverage. I cannot believe it took me 2 years to drive out of my normal pattern but after seeing Ironclad the West End location announce they had been there for two years. I decided it was way past time. let me tell you you have not had a croissant until you have one of theirs. It reminds me of the French bakery that used to be at Gayton Crossing 30 years ago! That croissant was a real croissant and I can guarantee you some of y'all have not had a fresh real croissant that place is dangerous... That croissant was buttery and flaky with fresh, blueberries and humongous. It didn't fit the box.....
