Decent, but not exceptional. This is a place that you often hear of as one of the better restaurants in the Pinehurst/Sandhills area. I have been there several times, and I would say this is more of a slightly upper crust place to enjoy a few drinks and appetizers after work. I have found this place to be quite inconsistent, and sometimes very disappointing. For instance, i paid over $35 for a black sea bass, that came with no sides, and that was very underseasoned. We have been to Ironwood many times but on Tuesday evening we were very disappointed. The room was noisy and our group of six had trouble hearing each other, even though we had reserved a "quiet corner". The portions were extremely small -- the salmon salad contained the tiniest piece of fish we had ever seen. The steak salad also had a very small piece of beef. Had reservations for Mother's Day. They had a special menu with higher prices than their normal menu. I had to send my lamb chops back as they were raw and my husband did not enjoy his dinner. I think they should have told us when making the reservation that they had a special menu. Additionally they added 20% gratuity to the check...not sure why they felt this was necessary. Went to Ironwood this past weekend for a special occasion. We received amazing service from Sandy our server along with everyone helping clear tables and such. The atmosphere of the restaurant was good, I saw people dressed in khaki shorts and collared shirts up to slacks and long sleeve button up. Although we didn't sit outside due to the weather, it did look like an inviting location with the fountain juxtaposed with some fire features. We ordered the filet and kabobs and each of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. The Calamari was good, and the fresh caprese salad was a highlight with the fresh heirloom tomatoes of varying sweetness and acidity along with a balsamic reduction that complimented it wonderfully. The server even surprised us with a creme brûlée as part of our celebration. We will surely repeat a visit at Ironwood and are appreciative of the amazing staff they have. read more

A large, modern, airy space with an inviting bar and a gorgeous vegetable garden and terrace. However, the portions, based on our experience, seem ridiculously large (and expensive). If your preference is for carefully-prepared food, nicely plated, and suitable for one average appetite, this isn't the place. Unless, of course, you're into doggy-bagging. By the looks of the garden, there must be some terrific veg coming into the kitchen. However, what's coming out of the kitchen certainly doesn't reflect a deft hand with those ingredients. Brunch buffet is way overpriced! We took my husband for Father's Day & after paying $80 + tip, he left hungry! Will NOT return.

We enjoyed a nice earlybird meal at Ironwood's. My husband had lobster bisque and said it was all right, not a lot of lobster in it though. We are retired and when we questioned the waiter about the prices for the earlybird steak dinners, he seemed puzzled. He asked my husband, "Have you been here before?" When he said yes but was wondering why the steak was $33, he replied in a rather undignified fashion, "The owner is a butcher and gets the best cuts." We figured we had better get on with it and ordered stir fry and fettucine alfredo. Both were very good but the portions were small, more like a generous lunch-sized portion. We enjoyed dinner but it's difficult to ask questions or be a thrifty spender, I guess. They become insulted too easily. The waiter barely spoke to us after our exchange. What a lovely evening! The hostess, server, manager all provided exceptional service ! The Ironwood Grilled Kabob was outstanding! My husband just mentioned in conversation that it was our anniversary and were we're surprised with Creme Brûlée and Raspberry sauce that said "Happy Anniversary ". Jordan , the manager is top notch! We loved the Maple Vinegarette and they bottled it for us to take home..can't say enough good things about Ironwood. read more

Looking at the reviews again, it looks like they may write some of their own because certain things are repeated in multiple reviews. A great menu, but the execution of it was poor. The burger struck out ... small (probably 5 oz. vs. the 8 oz. claimed), overcooked, and the fries were limp. I sent it back. The good news that keeps this rating at two stars vs. zero stars was that I asked for a wedge salad as a replacement and it was delicious. I have eaten here in the past & had good experiences. However, several weeks ago, we went with friends to the 'early bird special' time at 5:30 pm. I ordered the salmon which I have had in the past. It was not good........did not taste fresh & the veggies with it were almost raw. My friend got the pork tenderloin, which I recommended because I have had it before. She was not happy with it ......said it was dry & tasteless. Not sure if they were having a bad night or if the 'early birds' get the lesser quality food. This is a fun place for lunch with my wife. They have a diverse menu with quality food. It's not particularly creative. It's simple but well prepared. The atmosphere is very pleasant with an indoor fountain as the center focus of the room. The service is spotty. Some of their staff is spot on perfection, and occasionally we draw a staff member who forgets about us. If you're not in a rush, they're great. read more

Terrible experience. This was one of my favorite places in Pinehurst / Southern Pines. Tonight we had a reservation on the patio for 16. We placed our orders, including 7 specials. We were then informed they were out of specials. We asked them to make substitutions and they were unwilling. We asked if we could pay an up charge for a different cut of beef and were denied. The floor manager said it was restaurant policy. I have used this restaurant for private gatherings and for business functions and have never been so disappointed. Their unwillingness to make any accommodation is ridiculous for restaurant at this price point. My local friends were right when they told me it was simply overpriced. They clearly have more tables than staff that they can handle. Now we have been seated for 2 hours and are still waiting for our first entre. Unfortunately a once terrific restaurant has faded. I will seek out another location for our future gatherings. read more

Really enjoyed an April evening at this lovely restaurant sitting on the Patio. We had excellent service and the food was presented with a flare. The Steak salad was amazing and the pork stuffed with boursin cheese was tender and tasty. We topped it off with two different desserts, the trio of chocolate mousses was the best. read more

4.5 stars - Wife had the NC flounder, I had the chicken and pumpkin tamales. Both were excellent. We've had steak here in the past. They do proteins well and are consistent. One tip, as we've ate there at least half a dozen times or more over the last two years ... if you are salt sensitive, or lean in that direction, just go ahead and order low salt. Today we did that, and our meal came out perfectly seasoned. Last time around, we didn't mention it, and it came out a bit too salty for our tastes. We don't smoke, we normally cook low salt meals at home, so take our opinion with a grain of ...yeah you get the idea. Oh one more thing... KID FRIENDLY. but don't bring 'em if they're going to shout or act up. the ambient noise in the dining room won't support that. When I say KID FRIENDLY, I mean they serve food your kids will want to eat, they have a kids menu, they have high chairs, they have crayons. But it is a somewhat quiet establishment, so have some consideration for others. read more

I have had brunch here twice. Once as a large group gathering and once as a normal four top. The first time, I ordered the cobb salad with chicken and was not impressed. There was no meat in the salad without adding the chicken, but the chicken was the downfall of the dish. It was bland and dry. I am not really even sure I would call what they served a cobb salad because many of the components seemed to be missing and the portion was rather small. The second time, I ordered a scramble and had a better experience. Other people ordered the steak with a poached egg and really enjoyed it. It was a little odd that when someone asked for an egg added to their burger and the kitchen didn't seem able to add a fried egg, only a poached egg. How hard is it to do a fried egg on the fly? All in all, its not a bad place but the kitchen is a little inconsistent and can be somewhat rigid in what they are willing to do for customers. read more
