While shopping at Gelson's on San Miguel Dr. in Newport Beach, I was looking for a hand basket for my items and asked an employee where I might find one. She was very mechanical, unfocused, and pointed in a general direction. As I was walking around looking, I noticed a gentleman who appeared to be on the management team so I asked him the same question. His name is Fred. Instead of just telling me where the shopping hand baskets are kept, Fred literally escorted me across the store, picked one up, and respectfully handed it to me. Fred went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of as a guest in his store. Fred is the epitome of excellent customer service and outstanding management. This is one of the best grocery stores by far. Especially the bakery department. Rosa is the best cake decorator has been creating my vision sir many years and each year she just keeps getting better and better. Not only are her cake designs gorgeous, but they truly make my day even so much more because she brings to life my vision every year and is the kindest, sweetest, most wonderful and talented people I've ever met. Plus who ever bakes the cake does an exquisite job. The cake is moist, the buttercream is divine and not very sweet. Hands down Rosa and the people baking the delicious cakes are top of their game, know how to execute and give the most phenomenal customer service. I'd give Gelson's Newport Beach a thousand stars if I could. I hope corporate and management will know what a spectacular job their employees are doing, especially in the bakery and for Rosa to get recognition and acknowledgment that she so greatly deserves. Gelson's was one of the first grocery stores in Orange County to offer a poké bar and that made me a repeat customer ever since. Their soup bar is also a favorite for quick meals. On occasion they also have reps from California vineyards serve wine in real glasses and thats not something that happens everywhere. I like the folks at checkout. They're competent and chill. Its a small store which is a benefit in my opinion because you can find what you're looking for quickly and be on your way. read more

8/10/24 Just browsing what Gelson's has to offer (will stop & visit Bristol Farms for comparison in a bit. Gelson's has always been a supermarket that I consider one for the more affluent shoppers. For context, I bought a huge mango at Super King for 0.79 (on sale) whereas it would cost 2/$5 (on sale) at Gelson's. If you consider everything else, if you spend about $75 to $100 here, it would possibly cost half of that at Super King. Of course, when you consider everything else: ambiance, quality, staff/personnel (customer service), zi can deepen the reason most people would pay more for their comfort. Then there's your budget or what you're willing to pay for. It's always nice to browse and see what is offered at these types of stores. What I love is the convenience of it all & the customer service that it provides. They have a self-serve salad bar here that is very convenient. It's priced at $12/lb. While I notice that most Asian stores no longer provide the cutting of meat at their stores, "most" non Asian stores like Stater Bros. or places like Gelson's continue to provide this service. One can certainly appreciate this service. Overall, Gelson's is an upscale type of market that caters to its community with fresh produce, good quality meats, staff who tend well to their products & clientele. I have had mixed experiences at Gelson's Grocery. The homemade cakes ( chocolate and carrot) ordered ahead of time were fabulous. They actually suggested a late morning pick up time so it would be a cake that they made that morning. Everyone loved, loved, loved it. Unfortunately, another time I dropped in to pick up spur of the moment cupcakes at the same bakery counter. Clearly they did not have the same attention and were probably made elsewhere, which I did not know. They were inedible, stale and so hard they could not be cut with a knife. I returned them and they quickly refunded my money, but did not seem to care about what was wrong . So I recommend you ask some questions before purchase. Another time I was trying to find an advertised special on clam chowder. Four times I asked an employee to help me. Twice I was sent to the wrong spot with a point of a finger. One young man said he hadn't clock in yet and could help me later. Finally a younger girl from the deli walked me to the spot where we found the soup. The rib eye steaks, which I know can be fatty, were so fatty that no one enjoyed them. The strawberries were moldy. I am pretty much done with this location as it is a pricy store. It seems I do better at Ralph's although the atmosphere is not as nice. One positive is their cheese and cracker and gift selections are wonderful, so I will only go back for that. The customer service is consistently excellent--everyone is friendly, helpful, and goes out of their way to make sure you find what you need. One of the hidden gems is the wine bar. The bartender (Melanie) is fantastic--knowledgeable, and always makes it a fun stop during my trip. And don't even get me started on the food! The Gelson's World Famous Burger is absolutely incredible--flavorful, and a total must-have. I recommend it to everyone. Gelson's is more than just a grocery store--it's an experience. It is not safe to eat at the Gelson's in Newport you're playing with your life if you eat there. This review is just for the in-store coffee bar at this location. This is one of the few places that you can buy Paradise Iced Tea (if you know, you know) but if you prefer coffee, that's good here too. Large muffin tops in various flavors (chocolate, bran, etc.) are a wonderful treat; other options too. Fast, friendly service and easy parking in the center's parking lot. This high-end grocery carries some foods that I crave and can't find easily anywhere else, especially Eastern European Jewish foods like blintzes, beet salad. Excellent customer service, a huge selection of ice creams, and a very good bakery. Fresh sliced meats, no "cold cuts." Also amazing florals and custom floral arrangements. I want to start off by saying I really like Gelson's. I have had wonderful experiences at other locations. I only go to the San Miguel store because it's on my way home. This store falls short in their customer experience. I visited 3-4 times over the last couple of months, always in the evening. The staff at the bakery deli and sliced meat counter are courteous. Unfortunately the cashiers and clerks are bad-mannered and clearly don't care about customer service. You can expect the front clerks to be rude - particularly a youngish male clerk- always snickering and openly gossiping about people in front of customers. He has never bagged my items or offered assistance so I'm not even sure what his role is - even though he's up there. The last two visits, I noticed the cashiers and clerks don't even acknowledge customers and just keep carrying on with minimal interaction. Last week, the same youngish male clerk was being rude as usual - he was standing uncomfortably close to the cashier as she was ringing me up - talking trash literally in front of me. Last week they made fun of an elderly customer as he was leaving. He was still in the store! Honestly, I now stop at another store on my way home because of the tacky and unpleasant shopping experience at this location. I'm giving two stars because the ladies at the bakery are always pleasant and deserve recognition. read more

We ordered the prepared holiday turkey dinner for 2. The side dishes, although small portions, were very tasty but the turkey itself was very disappointing. Rather than the advertised carved turkey breast, the meat tasted and looked like a processed turkey loaf. Very salty and rubbery. We expected actual carved, roasted turkey. I used to live in this area and moved 20 mins south a couple years ago. I used to go to this Gelsons and get a specific salad which has grapes and avocados in it (can't recall the name). Today I was craving it, and in the area, and went to get some....when I saw it I was disgusted. The avocados were brown. It was gross. I got $90 worth of other items and THREE items I purchased were "bad/stale". One was the peanut butter and jelly crepes (completely dry/stale)...no wonder they were on sale. Second the pre-packaged "fresh" deli counter enchiladas (the ones prepared by Gelsons that you just reheat) were gross. The tortillas were almost hard and dry. They were supposed to be fresh (and reheatable). I planned them for dinner and spit them out immediately once tasting. Third, the Salmon (also at the same place in the store I purchased the enchiladas and the salads, was also dried out and not fresh. The one positive and constant was the tuna salad, which was delicious. Overall, I was not happy with this experience. It was not the "fresh/yummy" San Miguel Gelsons I remember so fondly. read more

Let's start off by the employee's are very discriminatory. I ( Hispanic 50 old male) went into the store looking a for specific item was going to do more shopping while but not even 1 minute I to the store I had an employee following me around. while I was walking up and down I had the same employee who was following me up and down the isles point towards me and call to another employee to watch me. At this point I made it my point to prove to the original employee that I was looking for something so I walked up to him and asked him for the product but he totally ignored me so that's when I started following him around the store walking up and down the isle. The second I walked by the manager I told your manager that his employee is prejudiced and following people around the store acting accusatory to customers, so decided to walk out. While walking out the store I also witnessed The same employee that followed me also keyed in on someone else female (bi-racial women and child) and started pointing to other employees and chase the customer out the store, She was also had a basket full of item and saw him as well acting strange, so she just left her basket full of groceries in the isle and just walked out. That employee made it a point to follow the women and child out her car. If this is the way that Gelson's (employees & store manager) management staff behave, this is not a business people should visit period and this behavior should not tolerated or even allowed. If this behavior and practice continue to happen I can see this type of behavior ending in a lawsuit or physical altercation. I understand that in society people steal but to have employees key in on minorities as they walk into the front door is bad practice and promoting a racial discrimination toward those who shop at the store. Even though the prices for this store are on the high side of things the customer service is far superior than any other grocery store. If you get more than three people in line they open another land. The quality of the food is typically far superior than most supermarkets. You typically get what you pay for at Gelson's. They do have sales on many items that brings the price point down so look for the red tag sale items and jump on those if it's something you need. They also do a promotion around the holidays where they offer $20 certificates that are good for about a month when you purchase $100 in gift cards. Quite the deal so keep your eye out for these specials. They do have a great liquor selection as well and offer a 30% off discount during special holidays. Keep a look out for this promotion, as you will save a bit on liquor and wine as well. Great salad bar, deli and fresh bakery selection. read more

This Gelson's is AOK. I actually prefer Bristol Farms. This location seems more like a regular grocery store to me. They do make a really good chicken salad here. But, the prices foe the regular items were higher without offering a larger selection of unique goods. The shop has a huge gift area when you walk in yhehe door. They have everything you could possibly need for any party or special occasion. You can also grab a coffee inside near the entrance. I was bummed that it was closed. We came later at night and Gelson's was busy.. I am not sure why the coffee shop was closed. I was disappointed Overall, an AOK grocery store. Again, I do prefer Bristol Farms. I wish they had more specialty items and especially a good coffee option that remains open when the store is. read more

You stop in, take a look around at their cute little merchandise, walked your 10,000 steps and proudly heading out, telling yourself, "...I resisted that awful temptation". Snob place!! The cashier (and young short ponytailed ) associate said her counter was closed after I was in the line when a previous customer just checked out .... Then I moved forward to the next open lane. Then immediately , 5 seconds past she said she was open now and wants to help the next customer on line !! Wasn't that suppose to be me!!! My non-white friend just visited here and asked for an associate for help locating an item in the store, and instead of pointing her in the right direction went over to a male colleague and clearly instructed him to follow her around the store for over 10 minutes. When she went to pay the cashier refused to let her use the card machine (even though the people ahead of her just used it successfully), and demanded she hand over her card (to check her name? Idk). Then as she was leaving the male colleague FOLLOWED HER INTO THE PARKING LOT. Misogyny? Racism? Stalking? Report filed to Better Business Bureau? I'm writing this review to specifically give thanks and appreciation to Becky in the floral section at the front of the store. I was looking for an arrangement of sunflowers that had been on display a few days earlier. There were many at the time but Becky informed me that the arrangements had been provided by a vendor and that they had all sold out. After I thanked her for her time and started to leave she told me to hold on. She then went to the back, found an extra mason jar, recreated the arrangement, and charged me the same special price that the originals sold for.
