Barnes & Noble - Tustin - Despite being followed around like criminals inside your store, I managed to still purchase a book I was looking for.

Okay, this Barnes & Noble hits different. You walk in expecting the usual fluorescent lit, "we ran…read moreout of budget for interior design" bookstore vibe, and instead it's super clean, modern... and actually kind of nice? Almost fancy. A bit sus, honestly. But the book selection is deep and staff is chill and helpful without hovering over you like you're about to steal a Stephen King novel. That parking though... If you've been to The District, you already know that lot is chaos 24/7. Not their fault but be ready for a full-contact sport out there. lastly, I took my kid to the kids' section and it's actually legit, not just three shelves and a beanbag chair. Bought myself a solid 20 minutes of silence while he lost his mind over "Who Was?" books. 10/10, would trade my peace for books again.

A very convenient location! The store is styled for the new model of Barnes & Noble. It does make…read moreit a bit more confusing to find genres but everything is labeled and once you figure out the layout of the store it works. The personal staff picks/selections are all wonderful suggestions. While they do have a lot of books/genres/authors it does seem like a lot of options were missing specifically in classics and fiction. Again they can't sell every book ever but this last visit was more of a miss for me. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly here and the store is clean!

It's on the former site of a duck hunting club and looks to be part of the water purification / management infrastructure for the area so it's not really natural or pristine. But ya know, the birds and smaller creatures don't seem to care much. What was neat about the day was that the weather finally cooled with some of the birds there actively flying in beautiful formations that looked more like ballet than what I'd seen from inland crows. If it's hot bring at least sunscreen and water as there's only patches of shade out near the ponds - at least where we went. There's about a half dozen or so ponds and I'm not sure what is different about them aside from small scale geography. My only real complaint is that the ponds are relatively poorly marked so if you want to get to a specific site you might find it tough on your first pass. The maps on site are not as good as they could be either. Maybe my partner and I looked in the wrong places? I did find a bit later that Waze or Apple Maps seem to provide the names of the ponds and that's a good help for future visits. There's restrooms near the parking. There's also a but if a picnic area near the parking. Small families shouldn't have trouble but larger groups should try and reserve a spot. There's gift shop and I think a volunteer runs it. We plan to return.

The whole time I was at UCI, the UCI Bookstore was just the UCI Bookstore. Apparently in 2013, they…read morerebranded as the Hill and then more recently the Hill has been bought out by Barnes and Nobles. New students may not know the difference if they did not know our former bookstore, but as an Alumni I notice the corporate effects making our once beloved UCI Bookstore less unique and more expensive. I recently came back for a Book Signing for my former Vietnamese Professor for the Vietnamese Stories that is written in Vietnamese and translated into English. It is a great language tool for those who are studying either languages. It has great insight into the Vietnamese culture and traditions, as long as you keep in mind that the origins of these stories were from many eras ago. The Book Signing event was nicely set up and I was able to meet one of their managers who was a fellow Anteater Alumni too. The staff was very sweet and accommodating to the event. Since the staff is still UC students, they are still friendly and sweet -- for the most part. My issue is with the merchandise and pricing. The books here are probably over 25% more expensive than if you were to buy it somewhere else. It is sad that some students who do not have the time or knowledge to buy their books elsewhere will be extorted to buy their books here. Every year the bookstore will buy your books used for dirt cheap and then resell it for barely less than a new book. I am sure things will only get worst now that the bookstore has completely gone corporate on us. Other than buying a few of my respectable Professor's book to support him, I was not too interested to buy anything else. I actually want to buy a few more of these copies for friends and family who want to learn more about Vietnamese culture, but I will probably order it online. Zot Zot!
