We hired Ms. Smith to remodel part of our bathroom in our new condo. When I first talked to her, I…read moreexplained that we were not looking for a designer but she reassured me that she was a contractor, specializing in bathrooms and kitchens. When she came to see the space, she was accompanied by another contractor, who she represented as her employee and her "project manager." In reality he was another contractor who she was subcontracting with. We ended up hiring her (and signing a contract with) her at the beginning of September and her "project manager" began the work a few days later. We paid her 50% up front, and 25% after the first week for a total of 75% ($6874). The project included building a new walk in shower, installing a replacement bathtub, tiling the shower, floors, and bathtub surround, and doing some of the plumbing and electrical work. We purchased ALL materials--tile, grout, backer board, fixtures, etc., and she was supplying the labor only. The first subcontractor stopped showing up after the first few days, and began to work only a few hours per week. She claimed that she was inspecting the project on a weekly basis, but she was unaware that the subcontractor was not showing up. All of the work was supposed to be finished by the end of the month, when we planned to move into our home. At the end of September the work was not anywhere close to being complete, but we had to move in anyway, despite the fact that there was no toilet or running water. After a week, the toilet was reinstalled, and after approximately ten days, the second subcontractor installed the bathtub. On October 5th, she fired the first subcontractor. A second subcontractor was hired and he began work on October 9th. He was supposed to finish the tile work, and do some light electrical work and plumbing as well as drywall. It became clear fairly soon that he had no experience with any of this work except for the drywall. On October 11th, she sent me an email claiming that she had "fired" the second subcontractor and she was "terminating the project." She also reviewed this subcontractor online and claimed that he abandoned the project. I am unsure whether she was lying to me or in the on-line review. She offered that we should feel free to hire the "contractor of our choice" with the remaining 25% of the original contract. After inspecting the work that was done, we realized that most of the tile would have to ripped out. We also had to pay a commercial service (twice) to haul away the rubble and garbage. Both of the subcontractors disposed of their garbage (including their food remains, etc.) on the floor in our bedroom. Ms. Smith has refused to return our money, despite the fact that most of the work done had to be ripped out (including the framing of the shower and some of the plumbing), and that we lost several hundred dollars worth of tile which we had purchased. She has also refused to speak to either me or my attorney. Hiring Ms. Smith was a terrible decision. Although I cannot speak to her skill as a designer because I did not hire her to do design work, she is not knowledgeable about construction, and she was fundamentally dishonest with us.

That allowed humidity into the walls and caused mold and paint blistering around my front entry door. I turned again to YELP to locate a company to remediate the results and find the cause or source of the problem. Alan's Restoration had the highest number of 5-star reviews so I took a chance and contacted them - now wary of the highly rated YELP reviews. Turns out this outfit is worth their 5-stars - and then some. EXCELLENT customer service including accurate and frequent communication, fast response, quick turnaround, friendly people and most important - when a substantial problem (that they did not create) developed during the project - they came back after completion and corrected it the next day. And I'm sure it was probably at their expense. Not many companies like this around anymore. I know that for sure from nearly 70 years of experience with 50 in project management. It's a real crap shoot these days when contracting with anyone on YELP or pretty much anywhere else, as I unfortunately found out with that cable company that caused this entire problem. So, I could not rate this company any higher and I recommend them more than any other I've dealt with in many decades. They yanked my bacon outa' the frying pan on this one.

I found Tubnotch on google while looking for a solution to renovate some old bathrooms in my house…read more Out of 4 companies I contacted, Tubnotch was the most responsive, professional, and flexible company by a long shot. I was put in touch with Jason Mendes who graciously gave me his cell number which I really appreciated as it made it super easy to communicate. Within a few days Jason was able to come to my property and give me a quote. The price was competitive compared to other quotes I got. I was able to schedule work promptly. The team was awesome! They arrived on time and worked till 7 pm each day. Their work is AMAZING. When my wife and I saw the end result of an old bathroom being refinished, ours jaw dropped. Big thank you to Jason and team for the outstanding work!

I somehow scratch it and had to call TubNotch Renovations to see about getting it repaired. I didn't ask for it to be repaired under warranty, and I ask how much the repair would be. Jason called me back and said under the circumstances he would have it repair at no charge. He wanted me to be a happy client. Then he mentioned my review. We discussed it and Jason wanted to make things right. He said he would schedule a repair man to come by. Several days went by and I hear nothing. When I called, they wouldn't answer my call (they have called I.D. and the phone operator evidently didn't want to (or was instructed not to) intervene. Jason called me back and said "yes, he was going to schedule a repair guy to come out but we needed to talk about my review". WOW, now I'm being blackmailed. He will only repair my counter if I remove my BBB review. I told him I would be willing to update my review once something had been done to take care of my countertop. As of now, nothing has changed to warrant an edit. He again said he would get someone out but it never happened. It's been over a week and they now won't answer or return my call. I've ask for information about the owner and didn't get an answer about that information either. I don't know if they don't want me to talk to the owner or it the owner doesn't want to be bother. I feel I have made a huge mistake refinishing my countertop. It wouldn't have been that much more (because it's such a small area) to have stone or granite instead. I thought I was having problems because the refinish is just too fragile. But in speaking with another company, it seems as thought it has to do with how it's refinished. He said his countertop can be used as a cutting board. So it appears TubNotch Renovation put the color down, then the following day, the glaze. This can cause a chemical reaction and/or the surface not to be as stable as when the glaze and color are mixed together. Apparently, the refinishing process can be done several ways and if not done right it can really cause problems. I don't know TubNotch Renovations' process, but I do know they don't stand by their work. A company that won't return calls (when work is under warranty) is a red flag that they might not be a Top Notch company. If you are getting a countertop refinished, beware, if you are not happy and give a review that reflects that, the company may not want to provide ongoing service (even if under warranty -- which my bubbles would be under warranty). At least this is my experience with TubNotch Renovations.

We promptly decided it was time to have it replaced...better than ever before! We got a couple bids for the job. But Charles really stood out because: 1. After walking the job, he promptly sent a detailed bid and CAD drawing. We refined the scope several times and every time he would promptly refine the quote and redo the CAD drawing. Very good follow through. Not pushy, just responsive. 2. He had a large book of color photographs of his work that helped us choose finishes and make design decisions. He has done a TON of patios and pergolas in different styles. I love this book because there are a lot of decisions to make -- it's easier to point to the picture you like more vs. having to imagine if you want feature A or B. In terms of price, Charles was in the middle -- not the highest bid and not the lowest. But we got the best feeling from him, and that's what is important to me. We redid our kitchen two years ago and our general contractor (not Charles, obviously), fled the country in the middle of the job after a progress payment! Yikes, bad memories. I am very happy with how my patio and pergola turned out; we seriously live outside now. We have a plexiglass cover (to protect from rain) and fans (to help somewhat with the Texas heat). Charles and his crew were great overall. Pluses: - They only do outdoor patios and pergolas. This is what they are good at and they are fast. - Charles was here a lot, especially at first to get the job started. He didn't just oversee progress, he was out there working and sweating with his men. - Charles helped to perfect the design while the job was in progress. He had his wife paint several different colors of grey stain onto sample boards so we could choose the right one. We spent a few hours perfecting the brick pattern on the columns. He wanted us to be happy with the final outcome. - Flexible with changes with very few change orders. I must have added 10 electrical outlets...didn't get a bill for it. So unusual for a GC. - Open to feedback when we felt like something wasn't perfect. Because they were outside my kitchen window, I would do dishes and watch progress unfold. And let him know when I didn't like something. Absolutely never got push back from him. He would call his crew or come by and fix it immediately. - Follow through has been great. Even after we were all paid up, he sent over a crew a couple times because rain was getting through my plexiglass cover. Again, so unusual for a GC. Minuses: - I wish they would broaden their scope from just outdoor patios and pergolas to other things. I have a bathroom I would love for them to remodel. Ah well. Anyway, check out the pictures. One of the prettiest patios and pergolas I have ever seen, and I'm lucky enough to have it in my backyard.
