I cannot express enough about how awesome this body shop is. James is an amazing advocate for you when you know you need your car repaired and your insurance is being hard to handle. He took care of me and my car and worked hard to get my repair done quickly and efficiently. Every time I called he had an update for me - he was always on the phone with my insurance or the car dealership to help get my car repaired as fast as possible. The whole staff was always courteous, willing to help at the drop of a hat, and friendly. My car was given back to me with a beautiful detail job on the inside and outside and it looks brand new!! It drives like a dream and they even opened a few minutes early to get me out the door with my car before I had to be to work. This place is INCREDIBLE. I literally have never worked with an auto body shop with so much heart and willingness to help a poor student with a car that was in an accident!! After backing my car over a ditch and unable to drive it out, I called my insurance to see if a tow truck was covered to fish it out. The wait was a bit excessive (over 2 hours), but I guess that's the usual with any tow truck company. I was super worried about my car, as it was stuck in a spot that could have easily damaged the undercarriage of my car, and was literally teetering in the edge of the side of a hill. Xavier arrived, and immediately used humor to put me at ease. He was not only kind and supportive, but extremely professional. He got what looked to be a difficult job of pulling my car out, done quickly and safely. Miraculously, there didn't seem to be any serious damage done to my car. I knew I still had to call my insurance to report it, and he offered to 3 way call and record and text me the pertinent information so I didn't have to. The insurance lady asked if there was any damage, and because I wasn't quite sure, Xavier explained to the agent that he was offering to have me come in to his shop the very next day to have it inspected. After we got off the phone with the agent, I expressed financial concern for bringing it in, as I'm not working, and he offered to do it free of charge. From start to finish, I felt incredibly cared for and that my car was in safe hands. Thankfully, when I came in the next day, there was only minor scratches and a clip missing, which they replaced easy peasy. Thank you island auto, and especially to Xavier- you're my hero! read more

I've been going to Pravi and having my car worked on since he originally started his business in San Lorenzo before he upgraded to his new bigger location. He's done work on my 3 cars: from oil changes, motor mounts, new transmission, new clutch, water pump, replaced ignition system, timing belt, and other work. His latest job was was an insurance claim where he replaced my bumper that was hanging on by screws, and fixing the side of my car after being side swiped. Pravi and his team do excellent work, the best pricing I've ever seen, very honest - and the 15 plus people I have referred to him are very happy as well and continuing customers. I needed a tow for a bad tire (and inaccessible spare tire). Roadside assistance called Island Auto for the tow and another company for the fix. The driver was super patient with this tired, hungry mom and, when we discovered the company was no longer there, brought it to Island to be fixed. The Fix: it turned out that our bike rack is now permanently rusted onto the spare tire. Pravi did everything short of brute force to try to free it. We opted to simply replace the front two tires, balance, and alignment check. Pravi stayed an hour past close to get my car done for me. His prices are very reasonable, and we plan to have more work done with him in the near future. My only dissatisfaction was with the woman who answered the phones. She doesn't seem to keep herself apprised as to what is going on at the shop. Her manner seemed dismissive once the shop was at its closing time, despite the fact we had just spoken to Pravi. My car has been a disaster. First, I took it to Pravi for my windshield. Turns out, my battery was dead and I needed a major maintenance. He took care of it in no time and I had my car back within a few days. As soon as I get it back, I got into a major accident and left side of my car was crushed. Ok, maybe it was just the door, but it was messed up badly. They had my car back to me in just over a week. Doesn't even look like I was in an accident. Stuck on the side of the road, my insurance roadside service assigned me to Island Auto for a tow and I couldn't have asked for better service! They said I had to wait 45 minutes but Xavier showed up in less than 10. He diagnosed my problem, game me a jump, spent lots of extra time explaining things, gave me great repair recommendations, and off I went. He turned an unpleasant experience into a pleasant one. read more

I definitely recommend calling around to check prices with other mechanics. I called AAA for a tow when my car stopped working, and they sent a guy from this place. He said it should only be around $150 to get it fixed at their shop, so I agreed to have him tow it there instead of home in order to save on another tow. The final bill was nearly $700. I called other places to see how much it should have cost and it should have been about 1/3 of what I paid. Their Yelp page also offers a free tow, but when I asked about it, they said the offer was a mistake that needs to be removed. They also quoted warranties over the phone that wasn't printed on the receipt, so another one had to be printed once I caught it. Though the warranty will only work there, I'm not so sure I would trust going back there. read more

Super friendly tow service. Nice gentleman, I wish I had gotten his name, was at the end of his 12 hour shift and still managed to come and get me even though he wanted to go home. Due to the mad rain storm, there was a local average ETA arrival time of 2.5 hours. Island Towing quoted 50 minutes but arrived 25 minutes early! Thank you guys. I appreciate what you do especially in crappy weather like today. To everyone else out there, yelling and screaming at these poor guys when they are running late due to traffic or rain, it's just plain rude. They are trying to get there as soon as safely possible. I got socket stuck changing plugs (I found that BMW uses special socket). So I was afraid of striping thread. I sprayed w/ WD-40 & left overnight. I found decent $ mechanic who had socket for car. Tow comes out immediately asked for wrench and starts at it. I ask to stop cause afraid of striping then he pops out the socket had come loose (Wd-40)? So he starts putting me down. So ok I eat crow great job man big thanks for getting the socket out. So we don't need the tow. So I feel guilty so I give him $20. Then he puts the same socket back on again and proceeds to tell me what's what. The socket gets stuck again...he can't get it out. I'm running late. And still concerned of striping the threads. I ask him to please stop again and that i need to move fwd. he says he can take it to he's shop. I say no I've arranged for a place. He loads up car, then asked again Island or my place. I said I've already arranged something. And could I please have to $20 back. I wanted to give him a $5 but I'm not a Getty (no offense if u r). He was reluctant and no apology. I'm a contractor too. Brought in my MR2 to have my belts looked at. My last shop kept saying the sounds were just the fan belt and they just kept tightening it. The sounds never went away because it was actually the timing belt (which was about to go). The entire bottom of the engine was also soaked with oil from some bad gaskets and seals, which the other mechanic somehow failed to notice when he changed my alternator a few months prior (the alternator is installed from the bottom and I had noticed a bit of oil residue on the undercarriage since i bought the car a year ago). The alternator was also not attached correctly and a bolt was missing (which was replaced at no charge). Great shop (loved the tour). Great service (though they get busy and forget to call promptly). I have to say that these mechanics are just as good as they were 2 years ago. The engine light came on so I took my car back to them as I had such a great experience 2 years ago. I was recommended this place by Allstate Roadside assistance. The tow started off good until 2 days later. They were supposed to drop off my car at an autobody shop in Castro valley. The tow truck driver couldn't find the key drop back so he had to take the car back to their yard for storage. Overnight storage cost is 20.00, no big deal and I paid it. My car was supposed to be dropped off at its location the following morning to the autobody shop. They became busy, so they decided to just let my car sit yet another day: without telling me this information!!!!!! Needless to say, while I thought my car was dropped off...I was called by the autobody repair shop to be told the car wasn't there. I called Island tow and spoke with a guy who stated the car would be dropped off before 1:00 pm. 1:10 and I decide to call to see if the car showed up..... Well no not yet, not as promised 2 days later. Well, I guess my car will eventually make it when they are not so busy..... Summary is: don't use this company for towing if you expedited service. read more

I am financial analyst, I know nothing of cars. They're asking me for 750.00 to repair/replace battery and alternator. To make the long story short, I told them that I wanted a 2nd opinion and I am willing to pay for inspection. I was expecting somewhere between 30 - 40 dollars, but they charged me 105.00. I was really angry, because they didn't use any equipment/computer to test the alternator to see if it's bad. They only used a battery checker. I told the employee that no equipment/computer was used to test the engine, and I watched the mechanic inspected my car. The employee then said don't come to my business and tell me what to do. He also said what do you expect that inspection was for free, which was totally uncalled for since I went beforehand to tell him that I like pay for the inspection fee. I FELT THAT I WAS TREATED VERY POORLY. I went to the local honda dealership, to get a 2nd opinion, and was told that there was no way to find out if an alternator was bad from a sound test. Therefore, this reinforce my suspicion about island auto, because they told me that alternator was bad by the way it sounded. In addition, I went to another auto repair, and they inspect my car just like island auto did. Their inspection fee was 000000/zero/0000000. read more

After having my car towed by them, which by the way they were the company that AAA sent to me cost me 4x then what I pay for my AAA membership in a year. Please stay away from them. I had a medical emergency while driving. The CHP showed up. I asked if I could drive my car a few blocks from where I was in order to leave it there or if I could contact my own towing company. The CHP refused and said he had already contacted this towing company, arguing it wouldn't be too expensive. Well what do you know, $500 for it the tow and one night. Someone should really investigate the CHP, they may be receiving kickbacks from these people. read more

After reading some other of these reviews, I wish I could say I experienced the same great service. If I could give them ZERO stars, I would. After our tire blew coming off of the freeway, our insurance company set us up with Island Auto Repair. It took THREE HOURS for them to come help us out. We were told the tow truck would be at our assistance in 45 minutes. Nope. When they finally arrived, we were told it would be a $95 charge for "labor" because the car is low to the ground (as most sports cars are) so the driver had to lay out wood. Seriously? We've had a flat tire with this car before and have NEVER paid extra for "labor" when having it towed. Also, we had the tow truck driver bring the car back to our house. However, it would be an additional fee to put our car in the driveway. You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me. Our driver was also cursing and complaining under his breath (which is very obvious when you're dropping the F-bomb every 5 seconds and standing 5 feet away from me) that we parked the car about a foot away from the curb--apparently, this seemed very inconvenient for him since he had to get on the ground to attach the hook to our wheels. Dear tow truck driver: I'm sorry it was so inconvenient for you to do your damn job. Anyway, we called our insurance company very upset with the service we received. Thankfully, they will be reimbursing us for this ludicrous "labor" charge. We will never be using or recommending Island Auto Repair. UNPROFESSIONAL AND HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service. read more

I do not hesitate to refer my family and friends to Island Auto and I recently bought a full size GMC truck and will bring it only to Pravi for inspection and service. This this a review for one of their employees, Malachi who got us out of a very uncomfortable situation last night after our truck would not start after returning from a hike from one of the Chabot trails late afternoon. To make a long story short, it it weren't for Malachi, we would have been stuck with 4 dogs overnight in the parking lot as there was no cel phone service in the area and no way to get to a phone without having to flag someone down on the busy road in the dark. FOLLOWING UP: I got into a second accident same car because my brakes failed on the "repairs" they did. I could have died. I didn't. Progressive wanted to go after them to see if they actually did the prescribed work. But I was just plain sick of them and car was totaled. I ended up getting much better car through my insurance because I stuck to my guns and did it right this time. Go to these guys if you like risking your life. Praise God I'm saved. Never ever again .......... I only give 1 star due to the "help with the deductible". Actually it's not help, it's because they use shoddy aftermarket parts that do t cost as much and float the savings to your insurance giving the illusion of a smaller deductible. They know they are giving you less, and if you accept that offer you get what you pay for. Sure you pay less for the deductible but you will have to come back in the next week because something they should have fixed isn't fixed or has warped or broken as it was substandard parts. Context: I got in accident. Insurance paid for tow and called island auto towing. We were supposed to go to my guy in Sunnyvale but the tow truck driver started in immediately with the "Sunnyvale is so far, why don't you get someone in town?" (Because I TRUST HIM and it's a VOLKSWAGEN and these insurance repair shops don't specialize enough to get factory approved parts...I knew this in my gut so we kept going) Then the tow truck guy say "But I'm just sayin our shop (island auto repair) works with insurance too it's the same thing just in town, you'd get the same service and the owner James will help you out with the deductible" Once again I say no lets go to Sunnyvale. Few more minutes, he's driving real slow down back streets to take one more shot fishing for business... "But they're fast too, I get my car serviced there all the time. Do they specialize in German cars...Girl we do all cars Volkswagens, Nissan, Honda, Chevys...." WTF, a Volkswagen is more Audi than Nissan, Honda or Chevy. Basically I disrespected my own car by falling for this tow truck guys sales pitches... He says "just get an estimate, if you don't like us we can tow you to Sunnyvale" So their shop is 5 miles away and my dumb ass goes and gets an estimate. Not same day. But 2 days later, it's already on the rack, I get an estimate and my insurance has already deleted the record that I wanted to go to Sunnyvale so I'm stuck with Island. I go through the process, adjuster sees the quote but doesn't come out. He sees they are aftermarket parts but doesn't send up a red flag...how would I know they are aftermarket? My guy in Sunnyvale is Volkswagen certified...he would have factory parts. Would be fine Tuesday...then Thursday...then next Monday...then next Wednesday...then techs gone home early Friday now pick up next week...at noon...no at 3pm...no at 5:30pm... If they needed 3 weeks to get factory approved parts, I would have waited. They clearly don't know what they are doing or have just too much volume like bottom feeding accident lawyers, looking for stranded folks to get into the shop. Needless to say I'm doing more damage to the car driving it with aftermarket parts. The body work is already falling off a week after I picked it up, the ac doesn't work, the engine overheats and the battery needed a jumpstart (was brand new installed by my guy in Sunnyvale) For the most part, avoid this place. If it weren't for my insurance calling their tow company I would not have gone there at all. They WILL try to work you. Then pretend they didn't. And they get paid, you get screwed and your car falls apart. Missed days from work, transportation issues, won't hook up a rental if they delay you...etc. That half deductible ain't sh** now that I have to pay thousands more to redo their shoddy work. read more

After roadside assistance tells this company that my key ignition switch won't turn and can't put the gear in neutral, they send a flatbed tow truck an hour later. Driver sees it, tries to turn the key and then says, " I can't move your car to put on my flatbed." And he gets in his truck and takes off! We called twice to be told the driver is on his way and in Fremont, where we were. He then told us that it was raining very hard, but miraciously it wasn't raining and when I told the guy on the phone that, he started to make up other excuses. He then told that the driver had to be safe driving here. 10:20... 2 he's later and he's still not here!!! read more

Took my Ford Explorer to Pravi at the suggestion of the tow truck driver when my fuel pump went out. Pravi was very forthcoming about everything, stayed late to speak to me when I had my car towed in and then had the fuel pump ordered, delivered and installed the next day. When I went to pick up the car it had it started shuddering when I would turn the steering wheel. I took it back to the shop (it was after closing time) and he came out and said that the power steering fluid reservoir will sometimes leak when a car is lifted up on the tow truck. He topped off the reservoir and said that it would need to be driven for a bit before the shuddering would stop. He said that if the shuddering didn't stop to bring my car back in and he would flush and refill the power steering free of charge (which Hutch's just quoted me $65 to do). He said he would give me a free oil change if I referred anyone and also gave me a cold vitamin water on my way out because it was so hot. read more
