My husband and I ate at the Island Grille on Tuesday evening, October 22, and ordered the filet mignon special--BOGO free. We asked that our steaks be prepared medium well. When they arrived, they were medium at best and some of the toughest steaks we had ever eaten. We're not sure what kind of steaks we were served, but they were NOT filet mignon. The only reason I'm giving this restaurant two stars instead of one is due to the good service our waitress provided. read more

So good we came back for a second time on our vacation! Both nights I had a version of the shrimp and scallops. First (picture) was with grits, second was over a pasta with Alfredo sauce. Stumbled accidentally on this little gem. Hidden off the beaten path. No outdoor eating area, but food is superb. Had crab cakes and scallop dish. Both excellent. Small place, most likely need reservations. Also excellent selection of unusual craft beers. read more

We made reservations here after receiving rave reviews from people around town. It did not disappoint! The BOGO deal on Monday's and a Tuesday's is totally worth it. It's a small space so be sure to make reservations. We had to wait a few minutes past our scheduled time, but it wasn't an issue. The space is small and they try to move people in and out as quickly as possible, so be patient! We had the crab dip as an app, stuffed filet and seafood pasta for dinner and the peanut butter pie for dessert. The peanut butter pie is INCREDIBLE. Hands down the best slice I've ever had. I never knew about it until a year ago, and I adore it. It has so much character, is near the ocean, and has good, gourmet food. It is very small and typically crammed but full of old island atmosphere. There are plenty of gluten free options. You may be sitting closely to other people, but if you ask for a booth, you will have a little more privacy. You need a reservation if you want a table for certain. read more

The Island Grille is a gem, but it has one major flaw. The restaurant is too small. That makes it too loud to enjoy a conversation. All that aside, the food is fantastic. The crab cakes were incredible, both filled with lump meat. My husband loves the grouper. The BOGO sale on Monday-Tuesday is nice. Make sure you have a reservation, though. Love this restaurant so much and especially the brunch (which some locals have never even experienced!) almost makes me want to keep it a secret so it's not like getting a table on BOGO night. I'll also say I love it so much I planned my wedding around it (brunch wedding at their venue). Can't say enough great things about the staff and service. I have been coming to Atlantic Beach all my life. This restaurant is a gem!! Fresh catch, great martinis, wonderful service, and a beach-front location that you will not find anywhere else on AB. The service is exceptional; go more than once and the servers know your drink of choice and call you by name. Some of the entrees can be a bit pricey depending on your budget, but if you want small plates - it's still a great deal. It's not widely advertised, but they also offer one of the best Sunday brunches around. Island Grille is a must for an exceptional dining experience at the beach. read more

I thought this was over priced especially for a set menu. It was an event held in their Celebration station. The door to the deck was broken and they set the appetizers outside in the heat. The pimento cheese appetizer had a wierd sweet potatoe biscuit. Did not inspire me to return. read more

Shrimp and Grits are one of my favorite dishes and this dish just took the ordinary to a Whole Notha' Level. Exterior: Deceiving to say the least. At first glance when you're nearing the restaurant, you are taken aback by the surrounding homes (who did the zoning here?); As you venture closer you notice a plain brick wall with no windows and a single neon open sign facing you, and then an entry way, and on either side another neon sign. Then you walk in, and realize everything you were thinking about this place so far has been wrong. From the hardwood floors to the mahogany-esque wine racks, someone has put a bit of effort into this interior. But now the important part, food. Food: Very good. The chef takes time to pair all ingredients in the dishes served, I haven't had an entree that had accoutrements which conflicted with the dishes main ingredient. Always the right amount of richness in meals, never a time where I had to put down the fork due to the meal being too much so. - Steak, cooked how you want it (really though, a rare is rare, a med rare is med rare, a well done [sorry I haven't tried a steak well done, so you'll have to order your own well done filet]) -Fish filet(s) (yes, there are many fish, but I am too lazy to list all I have had here), In general, cooked just right, any less and you would encounter a partially raw fillet, any more and you would begin to eat dry over cooked meat. It's just right. *Scallops -- never overcooked, just the slightest bit chewy, when you start to chew the scallop seems to melt away and you get to enjoy its buttery goodness. *Crab Cakes . No aficionado, but they are definitely worth getting at least twice. ?Curried Chicken Pot Pie? - Didn't see that one coming, but it was done very well, don't expect the hearty thick crusted Marie Callender's crust though, it is served in a ceramic dish with several layers of pastry crust covering the curried chicken. [definitely not a generic chicken pot pie, actually a bit of a stretch to call it a chicken pot pie, but it's good so use whatever name you'd like I suppose] Extras: Tired of writing this review but... Good selection of wines. Good selection of IPA's. One good scotch (The Balvenie) [I'm biased]. Mixed drinks, well, it's a smaller selection of spirits so don't expect some sort of steaming liquid nitrogen concoction, but they have the bases covered for most of the drinks one would normally order. Don't blink or you will miss this hoppin' little restaurant. Although it is small in size, the food, atmosphere, and staff are top notch. Monday and Tuesday's are buy one entrée get one free. My fiance and I ordered the signature fillet Migon which is stuffed with feta cheese, sun dried tomato, smoked bacon, and fresh basil. The entrée comes with a side of potato and vegetables. To finish our evening, we enjoyed drinks from their vast wine and beer menu, as well as a Bourbon Chocolate Torte. One word...DELICIOUS! Don't let the size throw you off. I really struggled with how many stars to give this review so I am going to break it in to two categories so you understand how I landed on three stars, Lets start with the bad and end on the good. The service. One and a half to two stars. I had heard rave reviews about Island Grille from my family who all discovered it last year after I had left the beach and was very excited. The restaurant is very small so a reservation is absolutely needed. That being said, when I have a reservation I expect to be seated around that time. We arrived and our table wasn't ready so we went to the bar for a drink. It felt like the seating hostess had forgotten about us. We watch five parties who all arrived after us be seated before we were all the while our table was completely clear, un-bussed behind us. 25 minutes after our reservation I asked a waitress when we would be seated and she more or less brushed me off and let me know when the table was clear we would be seated but did nothing to help or speed the process. From there it didn't get too much better. The hostess also filled our water glasses and never acknowledged my "thank you" each time she did. Our waitress disappeared for long periods of time when I wanted another drink. All in all the whole meal took over 2 hours which is much longer than my average meal, but hey, at least I was on vaca. Let's end on a high note. The food. Four stars! The food was absolutely delicious! For apps we had crab dip (yum!) and meatballs (good but over priced) and bread. For my meal I ordered crab cakes which were filled with big chunks of lump crab and curry remoulade sauce. I added a veggie, the grits and they were good but a little watery. The veggies looked like a better choice. It wasn't a huge entree but with the apps it was sufficient. Lastly we finished with dessert, the key lime pie and chocolate lava cake! The only thing I would recommend would be to add some fun cocktails and create a bar menu! Overall, I could or couldn't go back and feel like I wasn't missing out. It is quite pricey so don't think because of the outdoor appearance that is will be a cheap meal! read more

Absolutely top-notch. If you're in the area, a great meal is guaranteed here. They have a really exceptional beer list for a restaurant of its size (I was extremely impressed), as well as some truly delicious menu items. I'd recommend the crab dip or crab cakes to start, both of which were very well prepared. I had the shrimp and scallops in an alfredo sauce over linguine, which was a perfect proportion and not too rich. Other options among our party included a filet mignon special, as well as a tuna special-- both of which were delicious. Our waitress was not only friendly but helpful, making menu suggestions for those with questions and always sure that our glasses were filled. The two-for-one entree special deal on Monday and Tuesday nights makes the Island Grille extremely reasonable for the quality of food-- especially if you're on a budget. Definitely make a reservation, though, as it gets crowded quickly and a long wait is probable for those without.
