    Jan's Upcountry Jams

Thanks to Yelp, I finally discovered Island Grocery Depot's Lahaina location. It's sort of like a restaurant supply store that is open to the public but you are not required to buy everything in bulk. Since it is only 10 minutes away from our condo, I don't have to worry about not having enough ice or a cooler large enough to get all my perishables back from Costco. What I love about this place aside from it being organized and clean is how they have lots of local foods for sale from Mau`i Cattle Company ground beef to hard to find produce like pohole ferns to Made in Mau`i products like Jan's Maui Upcountry Jams (hope they will carry her Mau`i Onion mustard by next year). I even got a couple of packs of Sun Noodles in an attempt to replicate the garlic noodles I use to find at the Mau`i swap meet. If you want to cook like a locavore while on island, this is the place for you!! Slushy machine for a refreshing icee like POG on the way out, Island Grocery Depot is winnahs!!

Main cashiers. I like this set up!

Stopped by recently just to be nosy! This Warehouse grocery store is located in the Lahaina Industrial Park, above the Walgreen's and Foodland Farms and nearby Star Noodles. The parking lot is also right next to the store, unlike the Kahului location, where only a few stalls are adjacent and the remainder seem to be a mile away! Island Grocery Depot is a part of VIP Foodservice, which is a distributor of many food products on Maui. They have a tendency to pass savings on to the customer and I have taken advantage of their great prices on many occasions. Now that this store is open on the West side, I'm envious that Lahaina has a better grocery option than the people who shop in Central Maui! As you walk into this obviously new building, you're greeted by pallets of essentials, including beverages and other goodies. Seemed to me these items were their sale items. Then you can browse the meat chillers, where they have everything from steak to pork butts to chicken thighs. And as you walk in further, their fresh fruit and vegetable section has a great assortment of very affordably priced items. I usually go to IGD for hard to find items such as fresh spices and affordable mushrooms, among the other fruit and vegetables. As I walked up and down the large aisles, I noticed the prices were consistent with the prices in Kahului, which was a nice surprise. I say this because I know some retailers, like Walgreens, price their items differently (usually higher) in their Lahaina location from the ones in Central Maui. Their frozen food aisle had so many items I wanted, I kicked myself for not having a chest freezer! And, the prices on some of these frozen items, like their mini manapua, seemed cheaper than the Kahului location! All in all, I had to force myself to stop looking, because the prices and selections were so good! The employees also seemed very friendly, greeting me and other customers as they stocked the shelves and as I walked through the aisles. Very painless and quick checkout also at the front of the store. All in all, a very pleasant first impression! It pays to be nosy!

I have the place to myself!

I love this place! So I was in Lahaina early in the morning and I was starving and in no mood for greasy fast food. I wanted fruit + granola and a bottle of water. I had heard a few of my "west side friends" talk about this place and how awesome it was so I was psyched to try it out. I hopped on Yelp and figured out how to get there--it's a little off the beaten path in an industrial area. I found lots of parking and some is even in the shade--score when you're in the scorching Lahaina sun. Upon walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean it was.... the floors were sparkling. It was bright and airy and clean! Everything is organized very well. I found my items quickly and made my way to the register. The lady working it was so friendly and wanted to ensure that I had a successful first experience. A bag of Hawaiian granola, a chunk of ginger, a carton of raspberries and a bottle of water for $11? That's not bad for Lahaina! I was slightly disappointed that 1/4 of my raspberries were already turned, but that's bound to happen when they have to travel across the ocean to Hawaii. If you're in the area, this place is definitely a go-to place for food items. I can't wait to come back!

Great selections of local foods with good prices. Visit whenever we are on Maui. Also, they have two locations on Maui.

Plenty of parking though as it's on a private lot. Let me tell you, the poke here is fire!!!! So fresh!!! Found this place here through Yelp, and the other Yelpers definitely did not disappoint. The store is super clean, and each staff member I encountered here were all very polite, and helpful. When you walk in, the Poke section is directly to your left. When we arrived, there was a line and for good reason. They had about 5 or 6 different kind of Poke's the days we went 7/29 and 7/31. I had the Spicy Ahi and the Tamura's one day. Then the Shoyu and Chili pepper the next. All which were extremely fresh and flavorful. Great to eat by itself, or you can elect for a Poke bowl, which gets you two scoops of rice with furikake and sesame seed (if you want) and two choices of poke. You won't regret it if you're a poke fan! We came here twice to satisfy our poke craving. Crazy how it's a large liquor and wine store, which I'm sure they get a lot of customers for. But the days we went, it mainly were both locals and tourists stopping in for just the poke. Just a heads up, I overheard a lady ask "will you have more tomorrow"? To which the employee said, "yes we have enough fish for the next 3 days" which tells me that they do run out or have days where their poke bar is closed. The poke bowl was $14.99 each and completely worth it. Best Poke I've tried so far in Maui! Give them a try!

It starts at their building in Lahaina, which has a little café/coffee shop, plenty of chocolate for sale, and a rooftop experience that looked interesting but we didn't get to try. By the time we finished the tour, the kids had reached the "we have successfully experienced enough things today" portion of the vacation. Fair enough. From there, you take a fun little ride out to the cacao farm, and that's where this became much more than "let's go eat some chocolate." Our guide, Andrew (I'm about 95% sure I'm remembering his name correctly!), was fantastic. He seemed genuinely interested in cacao, the process, the company, and what they are doing there. That makes such a difference. He talked about how cacao is grown and processed, the history behind Kuʻia, and a little about founder Dr. Gunars Valkirs and his rather fascinating path to chocolate. Then, of course, there was the tasting. Lots and lots of little squares of chocolate. This is educational work I was willing to undertake. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which particular varieties were my favorites because apparently I was too busy eating them to take adequate scientific notes. What I can tell you is that there really wasn't one I disliked. What surprised me most was how much flavor there could be in chocolate that wasn't buried under a mountain of sugar. The differences and complexity of the cacao actually came through, and it made me think about chocolate completely differently. The chocolate sample they gave us back at the counter was also fantastic, as was the coffee drink we ordered. My only regret is that we didn't buy more chocolate before leaving. Be warned, though: apparently this tour has side effects. I went in expecting a fun Maui family activity where we'd learn a few things and eat some chocolate. I left wondering about cacao varieties, fermentation, processing, climate, chemistry and several other questions that absolutely nobody in my family asked me to investigate. It's been a few weeks and I'm still going down the rabbit hole. Five stars. Great guide, fascinating process, excellent chocolate, fun for the family, and potentially hazardous to anyone predisposed to acquiring new interests while on vacation.
