I have been wanting to try this spot out for a long time. I was in the area and said let me stop. The inside was nice with dining in two separate areas not including dining outside. I ordered on a large tablet kiosk. The price was pretty high for the food. I chose jerk chicken, coco bread and a beef patty. My order came out before the alotted time of 15 minutes (out in about 5 minutes). I couldnt wait to jump into to tasting my food. I immediately ate the beef patty which by far was the best of my meal. It was flaky and tasty. I then ate the coco bread which was soft and satisfying. When I got home I indulged in the main meal and sadly was disappointed. The rice was dry, the cabbage was plain/tasteless and the jerk was not good. I have had a hard time getting authentic cooked carribean/jamaican food. Its so commercialized and missing steps and seasoning. It may satisfy someone else but this is not what I will rush across town to get and the price was high for a meal that I am not going to eat. We are staying one night just off I-95 and Island Spice Grille and Lounge is next door. What a pleasant surprise. The hostess was super sweet as was our server (and the gentleman she was training). Christmas favorites performed by Jamaican artists were piped in and gave a festive vibe. My wife and I shared Salmon bites, fried perfectly with a sweet and spicy sauce. For her entree, my wife had the oxtails, cooked fork tender with a brown sauce, she said it was delicious. I had the bam-bam shrimp, done in a creamy coconut white sauce. Not too spicy, but just spicy enough. Call me a member of the clean plate club. Both entrees came with rice (your choice of type) delicious plantains and fried cabbage. As we are just moving to the area, we will be returning. Recommended! read more

My cousin and I stopped in after a sound bath wellness session a few doors down at R&R Healing to grab a drink and a bite to eat. It has been years since I have been here. We decided to sit at the bar and enjoy the ambiance. The space is really nice and the bartender Michelle was great! We both ordered the bone-in brown stewed chicken entree. I opted for extra cabbage instead of the rice and peas with a side of macaroni and cheese. My cousin got the entree as it comes but added a side of macaroni and cheese. For our drinks we got the Hibiscus Margaritas. They were tasty but for $15 it could have been a little stronger. The food came out hot and was prepared to our liking. Overall this is a nice spot but they are on the pricey side. We ordered a blue moon as our 2nd drink and the final bill came to $124 for just us two so imagine if you have a group of people. This Jamaican gem was truly one of a kind! I happened to be in the area and always love trying to find the best Caribbean spots on the east coast and this one definitely has put itself amongst the best! I got their brown stew chicken, and it was hands-down one of the most flavorful, tender dishes I've had in a long time. Perfectly seasoned, rich in flavor, and simply fall off the bone chicken. It also came with rice and peas, cabbage and plantains. (Which was all equally delicious as well) I paired it with their rum punch and it was perfectly balanced, both refreshing and not too sweet; The kind of drink that makes you want to order a second round. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, checking in me all throughout the night . The restaurant was undergoing some construction, but it appeared to be in the final stages of expanding both its indoor and outdoor seating. Headline: Predatory Billing and Petty Management: Don't Let the Food Fool You Rating: 2/5 Stars I returned to this establishment to celebrate my father's 77th birthday, hoping to share a meal I had previously enjoyed. While the kitchen remains competent, the management has transformed this restaurant into a place where guests are viewed as pockets to be picked rather than patrons to be served. The Food: The meal was solid--roughly 4 stars. Everyone in our party of five was satisfied with their dishes, but no level of culinary skill can mask the sour taste left by the "hospitality" we received. The "Nickle-and-Dime" Strategy: The issues began with a simple request for a bit more Escovitch and Curry sauce. The server brought two tiny one-ounce containers--barely two tablespoons--without a word of warning that this would result in an upcharge. When we questioned the bill later, the manager's justification was that the sauce is "made from scratch." Charging for a side of sauce at a sit-down establishment is petty; doing so without disclosure is deceptive. The $15 "Singing Fee": The most egregious offense was the birthday celebration. After being told the restaurant "does nothing" for birthdays, the manager suggested we buy a dessert so the staff could sing. We did. Upon receiving the check, we discovered a $15 "Birthday Party Package" fee. When we asked for an explanation, the manager's response was staggering: she claimed the charge was necessary because singing "took time away from the staff." To charge a "performance fee" for a lackluster jingle--on top of the price of the dessert--is an insult. When we expressed our frustration, she offered a 15% discount but applied it only to the inflated birthday fee, not the bill. The Verdict: STAY AWAY It is clear that management lacks the basic understanding of what it means to be a brand ambassador. To treat a 77-year-old Vietnam veteran and his family like a series of line items to be squeezed for every cent is shameful. We paid the bill, including the mandatory 18% gratuity, but we will never return. A warning to others: Do not bring your family or your celebrations here. There are plenty of restaurants with 4-star food that won't charge you for the air you breathe or the "time" it takes to be polite. Avoid this place unless you want your evening ruined by a manager who prioritizes a few extra dollars over a guest's experience. read more

We stopped by Island Spice Grille and Lounge around 3 pm on a Friday for a late lunch while staying nearby. sad we missed lunch specials which end at 2, we happily got happy hour drinks which were reasonably priced and they had local beer on tap. for the food, my bf has the Jerk Chicken which was served with rice peas, cabbage and he really enjoyed it. he rated it 4/5 only 5 stars if it was prepared fresh (tasted like it has been rewarmed to order) i ordered the Salmon Bites appetizer which was definitely prepared fresh for me. tasty and a little sweet but delicious, good appetizer portion to share. Tried to eat here for the second time with our service dog and they said we would have to eat outside. The first time we ate there with no problem. We enjoyed the dining experience inside. But when we entered today we were told the service dog had to stay outside. It was 100 degrees at that time and we informed them that it is against ADA regulations to refuse us access to the dining room. Hopefully you don't have a disability, you may not want to show up there. Sad times we are living in. If there is an attorney out there you may want to investigate this establishment. read more

I had really high hopes, but sadly it didn't meet any of my expectations. First, the restaurant was so smokey from the kitchen, we had to ask the staff if it was possible to open the doors to let it air out a bit. Everyone at our table was coughing and our eyes were irritated. Thankfully when she opened the door it got a lot better. The food was just ok. Some things are much better than others. There was nothing jerk about the wings. There was no spice at all and that was very disappointing. The Oxtails were waterlogged as if they were cooked in just water and then color and flavor were added after. As the gravy had flavor and the meat didn't. I packed up this meal to be nice, but I trashed it as soon as I got out of the restaurant. The Rasta pasta had good flavor but the lump crab was very minimal. The rice was very well cooked and not dry at all. The stuffed salmon was a ripoff. 22 extra to stuff and the salmon was not even big enough to be stuffed. The coco bread and cabbage were the best things of the night. Would I go back, I am not sure. Maybe my expectations were too high based on their sister restaurant. read more

After years of driving by this local establishment, my wife suggested giving it a try for a late Friday night family dinner. We love Jamaican food having sampled it during our many visits to Jamaica. The restaurant is conveniently located near the Bel Air exit off interstate 95. We were able to get immediate seating in the main room. The place was jumping with live reggae music. The friendly server, Bella, took our order of Jerk Chicken, Rasta Pasta with Chicken, and Ox Tail. The Ox Tail was definitely our favorite dish. The meat was tender and well seasoned. My wife took the leftover sauce home to eat with rice. The jerk chicken was ok, the meat was a little dry. The chicken appear grilled then covered with a brown jerk sauce. I personally prefer the dry rub version. The Rasta Pasta was creamy with a nice hint of tangy jerk flavor. My overall rating: Food: 4 out of 5. Jerk chicken was little dry. Service: 5 out of 5. Not too sure about this location. I've had food from here in the past and it was always something. Today was the kicker. Called to order chicken soup, 2 large. Came to pick it up, young lady informs me there's no chicken in the soup and if I would like more dumplings. I asked for more dumpling and corn. No corn. Why would they offer chicken soup without the main ingredient?? Why even prep the soup with no chicken? This place is near 95 at the Edgewood exit, and a better option than chains like Dennys and Waffle House that are nearby. Visited for lunch for the first time with a buddy who has been here before. The warning was that food is good, but it's just slow. And he was correct. Our lunch took almost 1h45m from start to finish. A lot of waiting. Food was delicious. I don't usually have a reason to travel to Edgewood but, I do now! This place is one of my favorite Pandemic finds and definitely worth going out of my way for. Drinks were superb!!! Jerk lamb chops and escovitch red snapper were divine! The staff at ISG was beyond on point and when I can drive takeout an hour across town and it still be delicious right out of the container and presented beautifully... puts this place OVER the top. Job well done to Chef Jazz & The ISG team for enforcing social distancing, taking temperatures at the door, and pushing bomb BOMB treats and eats out of the kitchen. My less than 5* rating, is because though the taste is great, the portion sizes keep getting smaller and the prices keep rising. When I started coming to Island Spice about 5 years ago, something that started off costing $12 is now $28-30. It may be a bit of a hike from the city but Island Spice has the best Jamaican food I've had in Maryland. In fact, I would put their brown stewed chicken against any of the "best of the best spots" in NYC. If you want patties or roti etc., you definitely want to arrive when they open. In true Jamaican restaurant fashion, they run out within 30 minutes of opening. They now text you when your carryout order is ready which is a great touch. If you do decide to eat there, know it's a full fledged restaurant not just a takeout spot. You would not be embarrassed to take a date. This spot is well worth the drive. read more

Honestly, from the outside it looks like an island TGIFridays. Don't be put off, because the atmosphere inside is elevated.
