DEBBIE is by far the best masseuse I have ever had. I came in with a excruciating kink in my left shoulder. I am a Surfer and surf very frequently. The pain was so bad that Everytime I coughed or blew my nose, I could feel pain registering in left shoulder. I went to see DEBBIE at ISLAND THERAPY. She began to massage my right shoulder while conversing with humorous comments and keeping my experience wholesome and comfortable. She continued the massage and fluidly transitioned into the left shoulder and began work on the painful area. She did this for at least 30mins. She Transitioned from right to left keeping a fuild and systematic flow. She then move down to my biceps and forearm for 10 minutes, explaining that the knots ("the crunch") are there because there is no blood flow, She does this Everytime she comes upon a knot, whether it is in the back, shoulder or wherever. That 10 minutes was the best pain I've ever felt. But the pain was mostly in my left shoulder. She provided massage in the tiniest places in my left shoulder I never knew could be massaged. "Under the arm pit in which various pressure points were conciously massaged ," "deep into deltoids," "various areas of the scapula," all of which loosened and provided relief to my left shoulder. I must admit, I was just a TINY bit hesitant when I first saw Darilyn in this little transformed office-space in the middle of the industrial area...let me clarify: Darilyn is an older woman--maybe in her 60's or 70's??--about 5 feet tall & I'd guess 85 pounds. 0=) I could be exaggerating a tiny bit...but not by much!! Anyway, I'd just purchased one of those half-off specials from groupon or hot deals, and I was really wondering if this was going to be worth it. I have a VERY stressful job, VERY sedentary lifestyle, and that leads to some serious knots and other issues. I'm not a regular massage-goer, but I've had lots of massages over the years, so I've seen a pretty wide spectrum of what's out there...good & bad. Suffice to say, I'm SO GLAD I went ahead with Darilyn that first time, b/c I was very pleasantly surprised! This little woman's got some serious magic--and strength!!--in her hands & arms!! I'm really not sure what styles she incorporates, but this was not your typical "soothing" type of massage. Don't get me wrong, she was totally professional & her movements were fluid & firm & therapeutic....but I left that room--all 3 times that I've been there now--feeling totally re-energized & limber (NOT sleepy or uber-relaxed...so keep that in mind if that's what you're looking for!). Amazingly, she does something that naturally helps my shoulders to stay back--I'm constantly working on my posture to avoid future hunchback-dom!--and eases whatever pains I'm having at the time. The first time it was neck stiffness, the 2nd time general back pains. The third time I'd just finished some marathon computer-usage for the past couple weeks, and was starting to feel that hunchback-ness creeping up on me again. =] If anything, I'd say the key to making the most of Darilyn's massage is drinking MASSIVE amounts of water for 3-4 days after you see her. And preferably the day before too. NOT just the day of!! I'm notoriously horrible at keeping myself hydrated, and I made the mistake (the 2nd visit) of drinking a fair amount of water the day before & day-of...but THEN I went to a "winetasting" later that night (oops) and hardly drank any water the next day (double-oops)...& I was sooo achy all over!! I was totally kicking myself afterwards, b/c it was definitely my own fault...she's always advised me to drink lots of water after the massage, and even sat with me for a few minutes (2 of the 3 times, I guess if she doesn't have another client waiting for her) to talk story & make sure I drink a decent amount before I leave the shop. If you can do the water-thing, you will get soooo much more out of your session with Darilyn. And probably not a good idea to drink alcohol afterwards either...apparently that dehydrates you more, who knew?? 0=] Oh yeah, I knew. read more

Debbie earned every one of the 5 stars. I came in from out of town with a troubled back that needed some tough kneading and leaned on Yelp to find Debbie. The Yelp community did not disappoint. I read through dozens of reviews because I had limited time in Hawaii and I wanted to find a masseuse that knew what they were doing - the worst thing in the world is getting (and paying for) a massage that didn't solve the problem. There are some masseuses that slap some oil on and move the skin around a bit, and then there are others that really know how to work the muscles. Debbie is in the latter category. Debbie's strength and pressure was consistent and strong through out. The massage was so good that I extended the session from 60 mins to 90 mins. I walked out a new man with a new back! If you are looking to be pampered with ambiance and show, this may not be the place for you. But if you have sore or tight muscles that need to be worked through *properly* this is the spot for you. Darilyn - like Marilyn but with a D! That was how Darilyn introduced herself to me which was really clever because I never forgot it after that. Last week was my first time here and I really didn't know what to expect. I found this place on yelp but the pics didn't win me over right away. Also, the fact that a one hour massage for only $65 made me wonder if it was too good to be true. I mean, surely yelper are rating this place higher because of the extremely reasonable pricing, right!? Ummm... no. Absolutley not. I am so thrilled to have found Darilyn. She has the hands of an angel that has mind & body reading capabilities because there was not a knot on my back that she didn't run her fingers through. I really liked Darilyn's technique too because she slowly massaged into my tight muscles versus using the strength of Hercules at first pass. She also had to ability to lessen the pressure when she felt my body tense up so I didn't have to say a word. This is the place to get your kinks worked out. I've been here three times so far...twice with Maria and once with another female and I always leave with my aches and tensions worked out. I am a deep tissue person and Maria has strong expert hands while being responsive to customized needs. Like one particular day I needed some deep back work but careful around my traps because I had muscle spasms then night before. Another time I asked her to help me with my breathing muscles, and she did work on the muscles connected to my diaphragm. I did the Honolulu Tri 10k yesterday, and I really needed a massage! I called Maria at 11am, and she accommodated me for a 90 minute at 1pm. It is located on Queen St, basically next door to Fresh Cafe with convenient parking. The place itself is around back and up the stairs. Maria has a small table and chair outside for folks waiting for the next appointment, since she locks the doors when she is conducting treatments (please knock only once!)-- this actually makes me feel more secure as a customer to ensure no one walks in unexpectedly. I got there a little early since this was my first time there. I decided to have an iced tea at at Fresh Cafe until my appointment time. First of all, I loved the massage table. It wasn't like the ones where you have to insert the face cradle into the table. I despise detachable cradles where my neck always feels like it is in an awkward position! The table had a cutout for the face, so my body was in alignment without feeling uncomfortable. This also allows Maria to work on the neck without having the customer crane the neck too much. The treatment itself was amazing! She did several different techniques to work out the tightness, and she would frequently ask about the pressure depending on what part of the body she was working on at the time. I also liked that she had me lay on my sides so that she could work my shoulders and neck. I get massages pretty frequently, and since we just moved down the street, I will be going to Maria as often as I can. The 90 minute massage is only $85 (cash only)! Such a great deal. This place is not a froo froo place. If that is what you are looking for, don't go here. BUT, if you are just looking to get a very good quality massage, this is the place. read more

UPDATED DUE TO RESPONSE FROM OWNER- very pleased that the owner cares so much about her customers that she responds so quickly. First of all, let me just say I am more mad at myself for not walking out when I had the chance. But I have had many massages in my life, and wanted some relief for lower back pain along with a relaxing experience. I got the exact opposite. I was SO uncomfortable during and after my massage, and it was so unprofessional. I'm in so much pain, I can barely move. And I know that a good massage can be painful hours after but this is not normal. This place makes me never want to get a massage again. Not to mention, my therapist's hands smelled like cigarette smoke so badly I couldn't wait to go home and take a shower, I even had to re-wash my hair to get the smell out. It was so gross. My therapist was also not careful with what the sheet was or wasn't covering. I should have been more vocal and told him how uncomfortable I was, but honestly I was just too uncomfortable to even say anything! Especially since it was just me and him in the whole place, I was so creeped out. I was so ready to get out of there, I just wanted it to be over. This guy even asked me HOW MUCH I WEIGH. Seriously? I'm so angry the more I think about it! And every time I told him he was hurting me, he just kept going, with slightly less pressure. After my hit or miss cheap massage school closed down, I was on the hunt for a decent priced massage. Yelp lead me Island Therapy. I was able to get a massage on a couple hours notice for the same day. My appointment was with Debbie. All the reviews that say she is strong are right!!!! I usually take a firm pressure and she did not disappoint! She has a very intuitive touch and was able to hone in on the spots that needed work. She talked me through the calf and sciatic massage which is sometimes painful because I am so tight and even took the time to show me a couple of stretches afterwards. It almost felt like a physical therapy appointment, which was exactly what I needed. I am so happy to have found someone that has the skill to do the body work I need! I haven't written a review since moving out to Honolulu just over a year ago, but felt that I needed to add to the yelp community by giving some more exposure to this wonderful business. As someone who's always gotten regular massages, I've pretty much broken down the experience into two categories, comfort level and actual massage skill. Maria is a 5/5 in both, and that's very rare to find in my experience. Her shop is a no-frills place right next to Fresh Cafe (gotta loop around back, but her directions were very good) that's convenient and safe. I'm not sure exactly how to put it, but for those who go often to get a massage you'll understand when I say... she makes the perfect amount of conversation. The only thing worse than going through a completely silent massage is one where they talk your ear off. But I guess that's a personal preference thing on my part. I'll just say that the overall experience was relaxing and very comforting, I really felt like I was there to receive some much-needed massage therapy. As for the massage; excellent. There are some things in life where nothing can replace experience, and being a masseuse is one of those. I tweaked something in my shoulder earlier that day, and it was causing me enough discomfort throughout the workday that I knew I had to do something about it so I headed over directly after work. Her hand strength was very good, as was her overall technique. I felt like she had a good understanding of how my bum shoulder was affecting the rest of my body. And probably the most important thing is that she asked multiple times throughout the session for my feedback. So, if you're like me and don't need fancy wind-chimes or faux-waterfalls to get a great massage, and you appreciate someone who takes pride in their work and business, you know where to go. I just had THE most effective, wonderful massage ever by Debbie! It was my third time here and my third massage therapist. I've had Darilyn and Nieva who were also both amazing. I love how each therapist has their individual strengths and no massage is the same. But today I came in with chronic pain in my back, neck and shoulders and I needed someone with super strength to battle these knots. Debbie gave me the strongest pressure I've ever had (I was sweating but it hurt so good!) and I could literally feel the knot that I've had in my right shoulder blade for YEARS, start to melt. She showed me which spots on my body are lacking circulation and building up blood (explains why my right hand is always numb when I wake up and why I have lower back pain) and showed me how to stretch and massage certain spots myself for maintenance. She even gave me tips on how to sleep better so that I don't cause myself any more problems. I was pleasantly surprised because she is a tiny little thing but boy does her touch pack a whooping punch of awesomeness!!! :) Thank you so much Debbie, Nieva, Darilyn, Maria and all of the other staff at Island Therapy.
