My group and I recently came upon Island's at the Foothill Town Centre. It wasn't where we had really wanted to dine, but being that a lot of places were understandably closed, we decided to go with what was available. The space was airy and cool from the AC, a very welcomed temperature after being outside under heat and humidity. Walking in we were greeted and seated immediately by the host. Our server, Christopher, was amazing. He was prompt, checked in on us frequently, topped off beverages without even being asked. He was wonderful. The service we received from him was really good. Absolutely no issues there. What we ordered: 1) Kahlua pork tacos 3/5 - I personally didn't like the corn taco. It was heavy and flavorless. I ended up just eating the meat and veggies which was decent. Thank goodness there were three of them. 2) Malibu burger served with fries 2/5 - I didn't get a photo of this. The lighting was really bad, so pictures didn't come out right. The patty was cooked medium well instead of pink as requested. The burger was ok. It was actually a bit dry. 3) Maui burger ordered with a side of bacon. This also came with fries 2/5 - No photo due to lighting. The patty was cooked to medium well but they asked for pink. The patty and the bread were dry. The guacamole in the burger didn't taste fresh. 4) Fries that came with the burgers 1/5 - dry, tasteless, thick, kind of stale. A ton of ketchup barely helped. We were all really hungry so we chowed down fast. Didn't even realize the patties were cooked more than we preferred until we left. The service was great, but the food, was less than mediocre. I've been to Island's a handful of times in my life. Each time I have not been impressed, therefore it has never been in rotation of my places to go. This most recent visit just reminded me of that. I placed an online order and went in to pick it up. There wasn't anyone in the front so I waited until someone walked by to let them know I was there to pick up my order. It took a couple of minutes but one of the waiters noticed me and I told him my name of the order. He went back to check on it for me and when he returned, he said the kitchen was still working on it and it would be a little bit longer. It took maybe another 5 minutes (the online order said it would be ready in 15) for me to receive my dessert! I ended up picking the Chocolate Lava dessert. It was the only one I could choose from, but it was great nonetheless. The ice cream came with a cherry and crushed nuts and fudge and honestly on the day I came it was EXTREMELY HOT outside, so this ice cream made for a perfect cool-down treat for the day! I skipped the brownie and only ate the ice cream. I guess I wasn't too inclined to eat it as much as I was the ice cream. So I would give my experience a 4/5. Daughter's birthday, she wanted to eat here with the family. It was moderately busy, unfortunately, we didn't have the greatest waitress, we kept asking other waitresses for assistance. Mostly come here for happy hour and sit in the bar area. Great central location with the typical set-up with the bar in the center. The place is often packed with a wait so as long as there's a spot at the bar we get to seat ourselves. Even though they're busy, the service is usually fairly prompt. They're always friendly and polite. While we alternate among the various happy hour options, we always get cheddar fries with ranch dressing. Came in while Christmas shopping as I was craving a toucan chicken sandwich. I saw they had a patty melt on the lunch menu which never had here. The deal seemed great so gave it a try. Not the best location I've been to. Here in Lake Forest our server never came back to our table or even acknowledge our existence she always had her back turned. I waited 10 minutes for more Ranch dressing and i asked two different people because our server wouldn't come back to our table. I ordered the Beach Bowl with chicken but there wasn't much chicken at all and the vegetables were hard and not cooked enough to be in a rice bowl. The amount of rice was about 3-4 small tablespoons and not worth the money. I finally got to speak to a Supervisor and he very nicely removed the Beach Bowl from our bill. Our server Courtney was fantastic and I can't say enough about how great she was as a server. Attentive, fast, and friendly. The restaurant was clean and the decor was on theme. The food, however, was not good. I ordered fish tacos and they were extremely dry and bland. The tortilla is a weird, thick mix of flour and corn, I guess? I don't know what it was, but it tasted really bad. I ate two of the three tacos before stopping. My husband also had a teriyaki chicken sandwich (I forget the name of it) and he wound up not finishing it because it tasted off. The ranch sauce that came with the fries was watery and flavorless. It's hard to believe but I've been a customer of Islands for over 30 years and I've visited multiple locations from LA down to OC. It's now one of my daughter's fave restaurants, so I take her on special occasions. We always start with cheddar fries and fruit punch. Their menu also offers some solids kids meal options. My default entree every time is the Northshore tacos. The Foothill Ranch establishment is clean and the service is friendly and attentive. Islands is my favorite restaurant ever! But don't eat here every day. Come here only one or two days a week. When you try it you might really want to come back the next day, but don't. It's unhealthy and too fatty if you eat it too often. Remember, I didn't give it five stars for nothing. The food is super tasty and I am still not sick of it after going for almost 3 years. I highly recommend this restaurant as a little treat every week or to reward someone. It is delicious and the service is even better. Btw don't go to the big location in jamboree road. We had to get the manager to redo my mom's drink cause they kept on making it wrong (we not picky but they just diluted it way too much and then made it really sour somehow. Lots of parking. Great location. It wasn't too busy when we showed up, Tuesday around 1 pm. Waited about 10 minutes before getting seated. The front hostess was attentive, and professional. Our waiter Justin was great. He was quick, helpful, friendly, and accurate with our orders. The restaurant looked clean, well organized, cool surfer Hawaiian theme decorations. Atmosphere is very welcoming and cool. Our food was really good, tasty, fries were nice and crunchy. But, I am definitely not a big fan of their ranch dipping sauce. The waiter said that it is made in-house. But I just didn't like it much, mostly the texture of it, it was runny like if it was watered down (This is NOT the case though). I'm so disappointed to write this as, I've been a loyal Islands customer for 30 years. in fact one of my first jobs was at Islands! I ordered curbside. The order modifications on my Shorebird (no pickles) wasn't recognized and I took a huge bite right into a bunch of pickles. I checked the receipt on the bag and no pickles was listed there. The chicken was flat, thin and dry, usually it's very juicy and thick. I couldn't eat the sandwich at all, it was just awful. The fries were soggy as if they'd been sitting in the take-out box for quite a while. Ranch dressing was watered down. I was not late to pick up the order in fact, I was early. I hope the manager takes this into consideration as I know the standards for service and freshness that Islands used to have were held high.
