I originally found Extra Space based on Google reviews, and quickly learned that the main reason…read moretheir reviews are so numerous/positive is that they aggressively ask you to provide them - it's even in the signature of all of their emails.
The issues started before I moved in. I toured a unit, showed interest in renting it, and was told it was reserved after providing my driver's license/info. To sign the paperwork, I apparently needed a formal appointment on a different day. I set up an appointment to return a few days later, and then came to find out that they gave the unit to someone else, had no appointment, and didn't have any more of my size remaining. I only found this out because multiple (!) sales people called me asking if I was still interested in a unit. After they offered me smaller units at a higher price, they were eventually able to find me a comparably sized unit and offered to match the price due to the screw-up on their side. I signed all of the paperwork, paid the sign up fees/etc, and moved in. I then got my first bill for nearly double the price that I was quoted. After several emails and phone calls, I was finally able to get this sorted out but it was not a good start.
However, that was only the start. What lost my business was their no-notice disregard of previous commitments to lock in rental prices. When I first moved in, it was explained to me that I had the option to pay in advance. If I paid at least 2 months out, my future rental rate would also be locked in and not increase. This applied to all of the months that I prepaid, as well as my future rate and was mentioned multiple times by multiple managers. If I didn't prepay, I was told that rate increases would be $10-15/month once or twice a year. I decided that prepaying was worth it for me, and rented for several years without my rate going up (at one point, I missed a prepayment and my rate went up $12/month, which I thought was reasonable, and in line with what I had been told previously).
Then in fall 2022, I received a notice in the mail that my rate was going to literally double, despite the fact that I had pre-paid into 2023. I called the facility, and talked to the new site manager explaining the error. He was sorry, but said that price locking future rates wasn't a policy anymore and while he could bring the rate down slightly, it was still an increase of over 50% from what I was paying (despite the website being cheaper). He told me to keep calling over the next few weeks to see if the rate would change, but it never did and then he disappeared. No one answered the phone at the facility, and I finally had to get in contact with corporate & the regional manager. They were of little help - while they gave me a one-time credit to match the difference for a month or two, they wouldn't honor the previous price or commitment. At this point, I decided that I was done - this company was not honoring their word and had no problem doubling the rental rates of their existing customers.
Unrelated to any of the above factors, the facility often had people's garbage/junk strewn about, the exit door to the pull-through was often out of service for weeks at a time, and it wasn't unusual to only be able to find few or no moving carts, even when vacant. I can think of at least half a dozen site managers in the time that I had to work with people there, and that's just what I knew of - there were likely far more. Even moving out, they screwed up my billing (which thankfully did get fixed).
Self storage should be easy and involve minimal interaction with staff, and honest/up-front billing. If a policy changes, they should tell you. Extra Space Storage is deceptive and predatory on established customers since they know that moving out is inconvenient. I strongly suggest looking elsewhere for your storage needs and to avoid this facility and company. If the price looks right, it won't stay that way.
