Wow what a pleasant surprise. I have always wanted to check this place out. We came in on a Mothers Day evening and they gave her a rose when we first got there.. How sweet. We were seated right away in a booth. The place is huge and can seat tons of people. We ordered up some margaritas and they were delicious. I slammed mine and ordered another one. The salsa had a kick to it. The chips were pretty fresh and tasty too. I got the enchiladas combo place with pork, carne asada and chicken enchiladas. All of the meats were very tender. However they lacked flavor or spices. Especially the chicken as it was not seasoned well and had no taste to it. I can say that the rice and beans were unlike any I have tasted and were pretty dog gone good. The service was top notch too. The next time I am in the Hood River area I will be sure to stop in for a drink and a good meal. read more

Ixtapa is usually a pretty busy restaurant however on this day there was only one table in the bar that was filled and a few in the main dining room. I walked in shortly after my group who had beers, chips and salsa. I asked for beans on my tab and the rest of the group closed out to play lottery games. The waitress never asked if I wanted a drink so I decided to close out. She went over to the manager to discuss the bill which I thought was weird. They ended up putting an open food tab on my bill to add to it. If the beans were regularly $5 I would understand that but they added on to the bill to have me pay more. read more

Very nice atmosphere I have tried many dishes and they are good I just wish they would make margaritas from hand rather than premade and poured into this jumbo fish bowls. It seems it's all mix and no tequila or triple sec. I give them 1 star on the margaritas Candice hope the owner or a manager reads this. We went in this restaurant simply because it's close to our motel. We were surprised to find their big parking area full. We were greeted warmly when we walked in, got seated immediately although the place seemed packed already. It was Saturday before Mother's Day. We ordered patron margarita and mango margarita. Drinks were sooooo good. We were given a big basket of chips with a small bowl of salsa as soon as we got seated. Table is clean. Bar is big and robust. Two lady bartenders were busy but cheerful. The food is pretty good at Ixtapa. Not the best in town, but good. The location and atmosphere are better than average. The venue is kind of "up scale". The service is average to below average. You're not going to get, "How's every body doing tonight" here. You'll get the standards..."Are you ready to order?" and "Can I take your plate?". Basically, like most Oregon costumer service experiences, you'll have to use the minimum amount of words to make your transaction happen. Lastly, the prices are one star. I visited this restaurant as part of a family road trip because it seemed appealing according to Google maps. While the service and experience were excellent, the food itself was expensive, bland, and over-salted. We entered at a busier time, during dinner rush the night before Independence Day. It's absolutely worth noting that the service was still very professional and attentive throughout the complete experience. The tables were also clean and well laid out--seating our group of 10 was not a challenge. We found our first issue with the value. Whereas Google showed $10-20, this is pretty much impossible with the dinner menu, especially with a suitable tip considered. It's hard to find anything substantial on the menu listed less than $18 or so. The fact that the meal ended up being smaller than most restaurants like this left us feeling like we spent more than we should have, especially considering the food. The cuisine itself was tolerable, but you could make better food at home with just a little practice. The consensus around the table was that the food was pretty salty and bland. Additionally, the Ixtapa Burrito that I ordered didn't have any vegetables inside it, just rice, beans, and chorizo (which I requested for protein). It was adorned with salsa, sour cream, and guac, but those didn't really make up for the lack of fillings. Where's the lettuce? Pico? Sautéed onions and peppers? I wholeheartedly believe that anyone could make significantly better food in their home kitchen with little effort, and because of that I'm inclined to give it a 2/5 rating. However, due to outstanding service and welcoming atmosphere, I think I can justify 3/5 overall. read more

Great food and drinks!!! On the edge of town and right off the freeway! I recommend the mole and the shrimp.

As the name clearly states, this is a great family restaurant. Lots of seating, but comfy booths, wide variety of menu items, kid friendly options and affordable prices. You can bring the family or the hang and have a hearty, satisfying meal without breaking the bank. After an exhausting day, we were hungry and wanted as casual place we could dine at without first having to go home and change. After driving by Ixtalla so many times and observing that the parking lot was always full, we figured it would be a safe choice. Chips & salsa were quickly brought to the table. Always wondered why Mexican restaurants don't provide small dishes - it would prevent the salsa from dripping all over the menu and table! Plus, we need more than one napkin. OK, now back to the review! Margaritas came next in super heavy glasses. Not a fan of the super sweet syrups, I requested a skinny Margarita on the rocks which is made with fresh lime juice and a splash of orange. This is the way to go! The drink was fresh and delicious! We split an order of steak fajitas which arrived sizzling hot. Thins strips of streak grilled along with onions and peppers. On the side was pico di Gallo, guacamole, sour cream, fresh tortillas, and rice & beans. It hit the spot! My only criticism is the steak was completely well done and would have been tastier if cooked medium. Service was in point. Water glasses continuously filled. Checked in frequently - one could argue way too frequently - and everyone was friendly and welcoming. I would definitely come back when wanting a fast, satisfying and affordable meal. Maybe even sit at the bar, when that is permitted again. Plenty of parking on their very large lot. Located across from Walmart for those needing a point of reference. read more

Very nice atmosphere Friendly service Good food This is such a nice atmosphere with beautiful decor all around. It appears clean and well set up. Great for a couple or large group. Even on a Saturday evening we were seated right away. Our server arrived quickly to take our drink orders and after just a short wait returned with our drinks to take our food order. There was a much longer wait for our food to arrive than expected but everything was served together and came our sizzling hot. We ordered both the chicken fajitas and a molcajeta. Both were flavorful, hot, served with many sides and tortillas. The chicken in the fajitas could have had twice as much seasoning but turned out ok with all the sides offered to add to it. We plan to return to try other dishes next time we're in town. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a family friendly Mexican restaurant in the area. read more

The current rating of 3.5 stars is spot on! What I like about this place is I never have to wait for a table, this place is huge. Service is fair, they will take your order, bring your food, and the check, not much follow-up. We had to flag someone down to get additional beverages. Overall the food is good, not great, not bad. I ordered a flauta, crispy taco, and a side of guac. The guac made the food so much better. They serve complimentary chips and salsa, but the salsa is a bit too spicy for my palette. read more

I got the best chicken fajitas! Our server was so good at keeping our drinks filled without over asking us if we needed anything. We really didn't need anything. We had a birthday party at your restaurant and the food was actually quite good. I'm glad that you guys got it together since you first opened because you had a bit of a rough pass getting started. The only thing that you need to fix is your chips. They clearly do taste like you just bought a bag of chips and dump them into a bowl. They're not really very good. You would elevate your food and your reviewsto a greater level if you made your own tortilla chips. At least that's my opinion. But great job on the food and the service. read more

I had been here four or five years before and remembered the food was pretty lousy. There are not a lot of choices at 4 PM, so I tried it again. The people were nice, the atmosphere lovely (authentic Mexican), but the food is gross. Cheap on the cheese, substandard beef, insipid. Also, their tap rootbeer is $5.25 while their Horchata is 4.75. Sad. I went in the restaurant to order a to-go item. The gal at the front showed me a menu and I ordered one chimichanga. I told her I didn't need the chips because I wouldn't eat them but asked for extra salsa. They charged me $1.00 more then the menu price. I asked why, and was told it was for the to-go container. We had a great experience here! It's a huge restaurant, just recently finished (moved across the street from their old location). We were seated immediately and had great service. We split an entree, an order of queso, and a margarita. I am happy to finally have found some queso that resembles that served in restaurants in the Southeast (GA). My only complaints were that I ordered a 32 oz margarita and got the 16 oz somehow instead (I'm sure it was an honest mistake) and that they don't serve Coke products (Atl forever!). I had placed an order to go. My order was not correct but I didn't realize it until I got back to my hotel. I ended up with a tiny enchilada with rice and beans and NOT very flavorful. The enchilada was a bit bland actually. The refried beans were good but the rice didn't seem as if it was even cooked all the way. The salsa and chips were great! I've been here a few times since it opened and as a white woman have never gotten good service. The servers won't refill the chips & salsa they offer, refill drinks. When you order the cheese dip, you're going to have to wait for more chips likely & the cheese dip wasn't good. None of my food had any taste of flavor. Spice? Whose that. Bland tonight. I wasn't sure if my drink had alcohol in it or not. The new restaurant and all is nice but I can get better served at casa el mirador and they have flavor. I don't plan on coming back. read more

I feel bad for all restaurants since Covid hit, and these guys had only recently moved to their new fancy spot when all the restrictions hit. However, there's no getting around the problem that the takeout meal we had a few weeks ago was mediocre. The "Campachena" - a prawns and octopus mix - was bland and not particularly appetizing. There was not much octopus in it either. The chicken in mole was VERY disappointing. A traditional mole sauce is incredibly complex - the dark brown/black is enriched with chocolate, chiles, raisins, and a range of spices. Ixtapa's mole is a muddy stew that managed not to taste like much of anything. Even the mole sauce sold in little jars in the supermarket would have been a step up. As sympathetic as I am to this restaurant, there are too many other very good restaurants in HR that create dishes bursting with flavor. The food trucks in town, with far smaller kitchens, produce food that's many steps above the two dishes we had here. Usually I give a restaurant two shots before doing a review, but it's hard to want to fork over another $50 or so in search of a dish they do well. The two entrees we had, combined with the very large menu listing (is a kitchen really going to be able to do so many dishes well?), suggests that they were aiming towards a hungry tourist coming off 84 looking for a fast meal and a few drinks. As someone who lives here year-round and wants a variety of foods, with great flavors, Ixtapa is not going to be on my "go-to" list. Not even the chips (and this town has a manufacturer that MAKES great chips) were very good. Another warning ... if you visit their website, you'll get hit with some really obnoxious music before you can get it turned off, but no online ordering capabilities, even a year after all the dining restrictions. read more

This is the best I have ever had. Has skirt steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, roasted jalapeño and red sauce. Best with flour or corn tortilla. Make sure to bring a big appetite or share with your spouse. I definitely will be back. read more

We had about twenty people for dinner and I must say they handled us pretty well. Most where contractors, you can guess the rest. The service was fantastic for the amount of people we had. Service was friendly and quick and they did not flinch. The food was actually very good and plentiful. I had Enchiladas de Souza with chicken - was very good. This place is wonderful, as soon as you walk in the host welcomes you kindly. Since I was celebrating my birthday I had gone to the bar and the bartender recommended the guacamole which was amazing. Abraham then followed up with great drink recommendations and wonderful conversation, speaking of the local area and a bit about himself. My wife convinced me to try it again. Still one star. I asked them three times for a box for my kid's food to go. They finally took the food, said they were putting it in a box and then they threw it out. No sorry, no "let's get you a replacement", nothing. I don't love wasting food and money. Ixtapa is now in their big beautiful new building in Hood River so we gave it a try. The good news - the food is as good as ever, the service polite and quick, and visually it is indeed beautiful. The bad news - prices have increased quite a bit, and it becomes extremely noisy with just a normal crowd because of the room structure. I think once was enough for us. read more
