    So yummy! We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and it was already pretty busy but got packed after we sat down. Plenty of seating can be a little tight but not uncomfy. Smelled so good once we walked in. Spicy cucumbers were great, nice chili oil. Ube tempura was so crispy n with the sauce it was giving crab rangoon vibes. The special curry was great, good egg texture and flavorful curry. The mentaiko was also so good. Our waitress recommended the udon over the pasta and it was great texture & flavor 10/10

    Got sat and served before the dinner rush came in. Was craving udon all month and really looked forward to it as I was in the area. Unfortunately the first few bites had a soapy(?) Taste. I couldnt tell whether it was coming from the soup or the spoon. Note that the kitsune udon has a very thick layer of carrots and cabbage with one narutomaki slice. The entree also came out before the appetizer which I'm not terribly annoyed about.

    Overall a cute neighborhood spot. Great service, great drinks, food is a bit hit or miss. Ube tempura - soft and crispy, quite delicious. The sauce was interesting - duck sauce with whipped cream or butter? Not super sure Miso eggplant - the flavor was good but it wasn't cooked evenly. Some parts were not as soft Unagi don - only had a bite, but it was good! Mentaiko pasta - the biggest disappointment. All I could taste was kewpie mayo, and not in a good way :( For my cocktail I got a yuzu whiskey drink. It was great in that I didnt taste the whiskey at all. Not sure if I'd come back anytime soon but Id be curious to try the other stuff.

    The vibe of this izakaya makes you feel like you've transported to Japan. We ordered the spicy seafood ramen and katsu curry special. The ramen broth was very special - great depth of shrimp flavor with a spicy kick. The shrimp was slightly mealy which we didn't expect, not bouncy even though it was grilled. And the ramen noodles were slightly overcooked. The katsu curry was very good! Tender pieces of pork katsu and the fluffy egg complimented the flavorful curry and rice. Not a drop of curry was left behind. They also had bento yakitori, an assortment of appetizer snacks, lunch specials, udon, and donburis bowls so their menu is pretty large. The drink menu was reminiscent of a manga which we thought was quirky and cute.

    Everything was really good! The space is very unique and very much gives off izakaya vibes. We really liked the dishes we got including the agedashi tofu and the sukiyaki. They were both very flavorful and light. Not our favorite agedashi tofu but good nevertheless! We were not particularly fans of the eggplant dish - it's too mushy and too flavored, almost drowning in sauce. We were really disappointed with the eggplant because we both love eggplant but we will definitely consider trying some other dishes if we come again.

    We stumbled upon this very cute Japanese restaurant and were pleasantly surprised by how cute it was. We both had the Sanshoku Salad. It was incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and topped with this amazing dressing. It was light, refreshing, and honestly the kind of salad I could eat every day. We also ordered the house sake, served hot - smooth and comforting, perfect alongside the meal. The restaurant was quiet while we were there, and the waitress was super attentive and kind, making the whole experience feel even more special.

    Stopped by for an impromptu weekend dinner for two recently -- I've been meaning to give this place a try for a while so was looking forward to finally visit. Highlights: - We tried the pork belly and chicken thigh skewers, which were both very yummy. Price point is on the high side but I think it's one of their specialities (and of course it's an izakaya). - Gyu don / buta don: I thought both rice bowls were quite good. I really liked how tender and savoury the sliced pork was on the buta don. Sliced beef was not bad too, although a bit more bland and dry compared to the pork. The added soft egg was a nice touch that I enjoyed - Various appetisers: we got the akino yuki fries, which come with a super addicting cheesy flavour powder, and the grilled corn, which had the cheese powder as well as a generous topping of mayonnaise. Both were quite delicious, I'd recommend either of them. Service felt a little brusque throughout, from when we were getting seated, to how the dishes were served/collected, to even getting the final bill to pay. Nothing was egregious, but it felt as though the servers were somewhat impatient or inconvenienced by us, which didn't quite leave us with a good taste in our mouth (figuratively). Overall, though, I think the food was yummy for a reasonable price, and I'd love to come back again to try the rest of the fairly expansive menu :)

    Eh, ever been to a Yaohan (八百半)? Okay, that's a trick question as most Yaohan stores disappeared in 1997, so you would have to be at least 32 (assuming that you need to be at least 5 to have lucid memories) to see one. Anyways, Yaohan was a hypermarket chain out in the Tokai region of Japan and grew in the early 80s by expanding overseas - Thailand, Malaysia/SG, Taiwan, HK/Macau, Indonesia and stateside. They didn't expand into Tokyo until the late 80s, by which time they are already dying from the tab achieved via over-expansion. They moved their headquarters to Hong Kong in '92, but the entire chain imploded due to the '96 asian financial crisis. Their stateside operations were reorganized into Mitsuwa. Their Japanese and some overseas operations were sold to Jusco/Aeon, which rebranded them as MaxValu (マックスバリュ). Others close down or were taken over by non-affiliated local investors. Why bring this up? Well, if you grew up in Hong Kong during the colonial era, your first exposure to Japanese cuisine probably came from a Yaohan food hall (they are anchor tenants in local shopping centers and really popular) which had to adapt to local preferences. Competing local diners and eatery also did their best trying to do something "Japanese influenced" while sticking with local cooking techniques. That's the impression I got eating at Noname - they tried to convince you they are Japanese with the decor, but they are Cantonese in nature. The harder the restaurants work on decor, the less likely they are focused on their host cuisine (like Mexican joint with too much sombreros, goofy lights, mariachi music and Corona/Dos Equis banners), but when you get the food you constantly get the impression that they are cooking something resembling, but isn't quite Japanese. Take the Yakitori or the salmon on this bento, for instance. Legit Yakitori joints use a trench grill with coals to blast their food with heat, smoke and carmelize the glaze. Here, it looks like they just griddled it with some teriyaki sauce and then used a torch to give it sear marks. Then there's the bento box, which as my wife would've put it...was over-seasoned and had a wacky layout. Why put a piece of fried mackerel next to the salmon? Or put gari (sushi ginger) on a bento without sushi? The ikura sansai is a squid and vegetable salad, but the squid is essentially orange cured cuttlefish 鹵水墨魚 served in Cantonese barbecue joints - it's also a bit fishy. The curry sauce served in their joint is like the stuff that came with HK style fish balls, while the "tonkatsu" is straight-up Cantonese pork chop from a cha chaan teng (茶餐廳) or HK style cafe. The small omelette on top of the rice is stylistically speaking just HK style scrambled eggs or 炒滑蛋. So here's the important question? Is it a lousy place to eat? No - It's not that bad, as long as you accept that it's not really Japanese (that'll be Taku Ramen down the block or Taku Sando in Greenpoint). It's more like Cantonese-Japanese fusion, which isn't that bad. It would be funny to pull the posters off the wall and replace it with Hong Kong versions of Japanese movies, Japanese celebrity collectible cards from Yes! Magazines, HK ads of damae itcho (出前一丁), and run Cantonese covers of Japanese CityPop songs as background music (oh god I listened to so much of that growing up thanks to my folks). LIC doesn't need another place half-assing Japanese, but they can use more places full-assing HK style diners or offer up HK/Tokyo hybrids as that would actually be awesome. I mean, the value is decent and the decor is pretty, I am just not sold on the idea of this being a Japanese joint.

    My friend and I stopped by to this place because we were so hungry and didn't have high expectations. We ordered their lunch special which suprised us cause it is available everyday, not only weekday with very affordable price! I ordered a udon with tempura lunch menu and my friend ordered salmon teriyaki lunch menu. We didn't expect that the portion would be so big and comes in many condiments! The waitress is so friendly too. Decoration also really aesthetic. We love the ambiance they created. We would come back again for sure to try another menu!

    Came here recently alone around 7ish pm on a Friday. Cool decor and didn't need to wait for a table. Service was very attentive, fast, and much appreciated! I got the creamy spicy miso ramen, but I was able to change it to udon given my craving. It came with three good-sized shrimp, cabbage, and pieces of corn. On a cold night, I was instantly happy with my meal! It had great flavor and a good spice to it. I even asked for a to-go box to save the soup for another meal at home. Excited to try the other items on the menu next time.

    The portions here are surprisingly big! The curry katsu came with soft omurice-like egg which was pretty good and the spicy niku udon wasn't spicy but still very flavorful! The fried squid legs were also fried really well. Overall, a very cute restaurant and the food is tasty.

    I got delivery from here and was VERY pleasantly surprised. The food was beautifully prepared and still very hot when I got it. The portion sizes were huge and very worth your money. We got the special katsu curry and beef udon. The katsu was crispy, the curry was rich, and everything just paired so well together. The beef udon came with lots of beef and the broth was so comforting. I would love to visit this restaurant in-person next time!

    Solid place - I didn't eat anything I didn't like. We started off with a peach chuhi and Green and Immature. Both were delicious. We also got. Fried squid with a great sauce on the side. I love eating the little legs as they get super crispy. I then got the pork Katsu curry that was great.

We also ordered the crab and avocado salad and the hamachi kama. Everything was basic. Nothing was amazing...oh except the price of the hamachi kama. Menu said market price and I get it, that means the price will fluctuate accordingly, but $60 for the hamachi kama? I almost fell off my chair when the bill came. I have eaten at very high end sushi restaurants and am almost 50 years old. I have never had a $60 hamachi kama. This one wasn't even tasty!!! It was not good or flavorful. Tasted like they just defrosted and microwaved it. I was wondering why i kept hearing a microwave go off but realized after the fact that that's what they must have done. I did not complain. We paid the bill. We left. Later that night I had stomach issues. Nicest way I can put that. I will say that i ate almost nothing that day so I can only attribute the stomach issues to the sushi. Needless to say we will not be back.
