Used to really enjoy this spot but hadn't been in years so recently gave it another try and I'm so glad I did! When we first walked in, no other diners were there which made me a little suspicious. We were promptly seated and offered hot tea though so we were locked in. I initially ordered to seafood claypot but was told it takes 45 minutes...so pivoted to chicken wonton soup (no noodles). My partner got kung pao chicken. while we waited for our food, a handful of people came in to pick up their to go orders, which made me feel better. Another party eventually dined in as well. Gum Kuo has been around for decades and is an inexpensive spot for homey Cantonese comfort food. Park in the underground garage below the plaza for convenience. Wife and I went for a quick Tuesday lunch and had Jook and Fun. For the Jook, we had Fish Filet Jook with Chinese Doughnut for dipping. It was nice, hot, and not runny with slice of fresh fish, although I prefer my fish skinless. For the Fun, we had Beef and Mushroom Cheong Fun that had smooth beef and shitake mushrooms that you can taste. Gum Kuo is the place to go for fresh, silky, rice wrapped rolls. Their menu is extensive but every dish I've tried over the years has exceeded my expectations. We frequent this spot and opt to go here over other similar restaurants in the area whenever we're craving stir fry, congee, or steamed rice rolls. The rice rolls are chewy and fresh. I'm a fan of their bbq and clay pot rice dishes as well. Some items I do prefer to get at other spots in Chinatown. I wouldn't expect much in terms of warm service but they are quick and the value of their food justifies the no-frills vibe. They have many options for fried rice and congee, you cant go wrong with any of them. The portion size for the fried rice is big, i usually make two meals out of it. My family comes and gets takeout from here regularly. It's cheap and delicious! The char siu rice bowl is $7.50, super filling and yummy. It comes with a few broccoli and jasmine white rice. Getting right to it, 4 stars because it's so affordable! However, there are some things I want to point out that would actually make this spot more of a 3 star visit. 1. The attached parking garage charges $2/every half hour. Granted, this is no where near SF parking rates, it's still an additional fee. Street parking is super hard to find, and the streets are hectic, but you can test your luck (and patience). They use little tokens now that you have to pay for before exiting. Make sure you hold onto it because a lost token will run you $48 for the day rate. 2. The spot is poppin. It's not a complaint, that's a great thing! However it's really small inside so if there's a wait, you do have to line up in a single file line along a divider wall, where you can watch diners eat. Right next to you is the take out line for BBQ orders. It can get really claustrophobic. Tables do move fast as they're quick to bring out food, however you may be asked to just share a table with someone else. They have a couple round tables for the communal dining, or larger groups (up to 8). This is an ideal spot for 2-4 people. 6+ may cause you to wait longer for seating. 3. The tap water tastes kind of weird. They bring you a hot cup of tea too but the herbal taste is a bit too strong for me. 4. The bbq items are just okay :( I did a 3 item bbq combo with rice for about $21. You get a generous portion of meat, rice and a few pieces of steamed Chinese broccoli (gai lan). No sauce to dip or anything, but they do have a black bean sauce on the table to use. The sauce is pretty salty though, so just keep that in mind when you're adding it on. No spicy condiments on the table unfortunately. The duck was decent, but the bbq pork was a bit too lean for me. It wasn't overly sweet though so that was nice. The roast pork wasn't crunchy at all!! For some reason, they thin sliced it, instead of cut it into cubes. I love roast pork for the crunch so this was disappointing. The skin was more chewy than crunchy. All of the meats were tender though! 5. Fresh shrimp rice roll was hot and steamy and the price is cheaper than some dim sum spots ($7.50 for this one i think). However, you also get less shrimp. The sauce poured on was also kinda thin, and not sweet or umami enough. The rice roll itself had a good chew though, silky but a little thick. It holds up well while eating. The proportion go shrimp to rice noodle is waaaay off though. 6. Wonton noodle soup was good! This seemed like the crowd favorite as most everyone ordered this. The noodle could have had a bit more chew to it, but the wontons were bouncy and the broth comforting. You get a couple pieces of chinese broccoli with this too which is nice. The service was efficient and our main server was nice. She spoke english and actually smiled back. They take card payment too, so that's convenient. You really get some bang for your buck here, but I'd probably stick to taking food to go. read more

Went to the dentist for a filling on Saturday morning and had my mouth numbed, so what to eat but porridge! When I think of a porridge spot in Oakland Chinatown, the first place that comes to mind is Gum Kuo! I feel like it's such a classic, and one of the view spots that have been around forever and is still open. Though I actually haven't been too many times! We ended up getting an egg and beef porridge, a fish fillet porridge, a duck cherng fun, and a beef cherng fun. The best was def the beef porridge. Nice and smooth and well seasoned. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed by the fish porridge. I thought they would use basa fillets, but they used a different type of fish with the skin on, so it ended up being much more fishy than I like. The duck cherng fun was unique, and I liked the flavor combination of the roast duck and rice noodle roll, but the cherng fun itself could have been more soft and smooth. My go to order is the half peking duck and it is crispy, juicy and fatty, and definitely a must try if you go. In the heart of Oakland Chinatown, there are a ton of diverse options for Chinese cuisine, but Gum Kuo's combination of taste, value, and convenience make it hard to beat. Some of the key parts of Chinese American cuisine has always been the assortment of bbq meats that are offered, usually displayed hanging on racks or stovetops right at the windows for passerbys like myself to get lured in. Gum Kuo offers bbq in abundance, ranging from bbq pork char siu, crispy roast pork/pork belly, roast duck/peking duck, etc. You can order by the pound or 1/2 pound depending on the meat and for a great price, you can get some heaping portions to last multiple meals or for a party. The char siu and duck are among my favorites to get as they are incredibly juicy and pair very well with any rice dish or noodle soup. Speaking of soups, Gum Kuo also boasts, in my opinion, the best wonton soup I have had. For under $10, you can get a ton of flavorful wontons in a delicious hearty soup with or without noodles and can also be topped with that delicious pork or duck which pair great with the juicy wontons. Lastly, this spot also has some great rice rolls (cheung fun) with bbq pork or shrimp for a great price comparable to the other dim sum spots in the area. Usually I will only do take out but there is a good enough amount of seating inside the restaurant to make it a good spot for a quick lunch or dinner, although parking is always an issue in this highly congested and popular area. The food is good, but I suggest focusing on Cantonese dishes. The sampan congee was really good in terms of the stuff they added to the congee base...they allow for extras, like I added preserved egg...but the congee base itself was quite bland. Frankly, the lack of sodium is probably a good trend to set as you can always add more. I ended up adding salt, white pepper, and soy sauce to make mine better. The other dishes were pretty amazing. The entrance is cramped with people ordering from the food bar and I should've just asked to be seated instead of waiting because they had no idea what I asked for when it was finally my turn. So I just sat down and ended up eating there instead of takeout like I originally planned. I pointed at the menu or food item to order. I got thousand egg porridge, seafood porridge, pig blood dish and chicken feet. I didn't like that chicken feet, it just wasn't the texture I prefer but there was nothing wrong with the quality. The blood I added to my porridge and it was so good even on its own. The sauce on it is great. Wish they had fish sauce for me to use on the side but not surprised they didn't. Should've ordered some duck to go because it looked so good. This is not a place that's good for people who have no idea what they want and I'd suggest looking up the menu beforehand. My go to is their roast duck, which is $17.50 for half and $33.95 for a full. It's not cheap, but the meat is more flavorful and moist compared to some of the other bbq shops I've tried. Both the siu yuk (roast pork) and chasiu (bbq pork) go for $12.95/lb, so prices are reasonable. I don't like chasiu so I've never had that here, but their siu yuk is good as well. The best deal here is their spiced duck feet and wings, which only go for $3.95/lb. I love snacking on them! In addition to porridge, I also get noodles, rice rolls, fried doughnuts to dip in the porridge, and anything else I'm craving. The barbecue is quite popular, but the star of my visits is always the porridge. Street parking is $2/hour, the paid lot is $3/hour, unless you come on a Sunday or holiday then it's free parking. There are no restrooms in the restaurant, you'll have to ask for a key and walk to a separate area of the plaza. Remember, you are coming for the food and not for the ambiance or service! That's how you know the food is great. The Gum Kuo here is the original and better than the other chain that opened up in Dublin. I highly recommend dining here! read more

Yumyumyum! I love a good hk/canton style cafe and this place does it pretty well! I ordered a whole bunch of things.. perhaps my eyes were a bit too big for my stomach I ordered the rice roll with the Chinese donut, the roasted duck and wonton, and the club sandwich (to share, I'm not big back) The rice roll was thick, which may be nice for some people, but I prefer the super thin kind :c but anyway it was good! Wish the donut inside was crispier. You could tell it's been sitting in sauce for a hot minute. The roasted duck and wontons were delicious. Duck had started soaking up the soup, so it was juicy w extra liquid haha. The wontons were a tad toooo salty, but balanced out okay w the soup and everything else. Club sandwich was good, basic. Can't really do wrong with that Overall solid, no frills. Super fair prices and good serving sizes. Service is super quick and efficient too. read more
