We were promptly seated and offered hot tea though so we were locked in. I initially ordered to seafood claypot but was told it takes 45 minutes...so pivoted to chicken wonton soup (no noodles). My partner got kung pao chicken. while we waited for our food, a handful of people came in to pick up their to go orders, which made me feel better. Another party eventually dined in as well. Fyi the interior isn't much to write home about but comfortable. Then the food came. My soup was freaking delicious! Loads of chicken meat (just chopped up with the bones so be careful for shards), plenty of dumplings, and the broth was sooo good! I couldn't finish and took some left overs home; the next day, my soup coagulated (full of collagen)!! Partner enjoyed their kung Pao chicken but said they'd order something else next time. Gum Kuo has been around for decades and is an inexpensive spot for homey Cantonese comfort food. Park in the underground garage below the plaza for convenience. Wife and I went for a quick Tuesday lunch and had Jook and Fun. For the Jook, we had Fish Filet Jook with Chinese Doughnut for dipping. It was nice, hot, and not runny with slice of fresh fish, although I prefer my fish skinless. For the Fun, we had Beef and Mushroom Cheong Fun that had smooth beef and shitake mushrooms that you can taste. Gum Kuo is the place to go for fresh, silky, rice wrapped rolls. Iconic for Oakland Cheong Fun. Overall, glad they're still around for quick comfort food. Service is multilingual so no need to worry about ordering. I walked in to order to-go. You walk up to the glass window where you will see a sign telling you where to order. There were folks waiting for their order so I just asked them if they were in line and they actually ordered already. The staff were super busy but did their best! Quite literally my favorite, most reliable Chinese food spots ever. My family has been coming here since I was like 8 years old and have seen this restaurant stay consistent over all those years. Their menu is extensive but every dish I've tried over the years has exceeded my expectations. Our favorites are: Shrimp rice rolls, beef chow fun, beef fried rice, salted fish and chicken fried rice, cha siu rice bowl, and the roasted duck wonton noodle soup! I love Gum Kuo, it's a staple in Chinatown and affordable! If youre looking for cheap eats, Gum Kuo is the place! It's a no frills hole in the wall type of establishment. The service is fast despite it being busy. I come here pretty often whether it's for take out or dine in. My go to dishes are their beef fried rice, wontons, and their congee! They have many options for fried rice and congee, you cant go wrong with any of them. The portion size for the fried rice is big, i usually make two meals out of it. The congee has a nice consistency, it's not watery and not too thick. It tastes rich and comforting. Pair it with the chinese donut and it's a match made in heaven. The wontons here are the best in Chinatown! The wrapping is nice and silky and they do not skimp on the filling. Each wonton has their own shrimp! We frequent this spot and opt to go here over other similar restaurants in the area whenever we're craving stir fry, congee, or steamed rice rolls. The rice rolls are chewy and fresh. I'm a fan of their bbq and clay pot rice dishes as well. Some items I do prefer to get at other spots in Chinatown. I wouldn't expect much in terms of warm service but they are quick and the value of their food justifies the no-frills vibe. The only downside is that they tend to close pretty early but we've arrived as late as 30 mins before closing and have still been served. My family comes and gets takeout from here regularly. It's cheap and delicious! The char siu rice bowl is $7.50, super filling and yummy. It comes with a few broccoli and jasmine white rice. You can also get any of their cooked foods on top of rice for the same price. I tried their pork spareribs and it was really good. Our family also gets the roasted duck, fried pork, and chicken here. Getting right to it, 4 stars because it's so affordable! However, there are some things I want to point out that would actually make this spot more of a 3 star visit. 1. The attached parking garage charges $2/every half hour. Granted, this is no where near SF parking rates, it's still an additional fee. Street parking is super hard to find, and the streets are hectic, but you can test your luck (and patience). They use little tokens now that you have to pay for before exiting. Make sure you hold onto it because a lost token will run you $48 for the day rate. 2. The spot is poppin. It's not a complaint, that's a great thing! However it's really small inside so if there's a wait, you do have to line up in a single file line along a divider wall, where you can watch diners eat. Right next to you is the take out line for BBQ orders. It can get really claustrophobic. Tables do move fast as they're quick to bring out food, however you may be asked to just share a table with someone else. They have a couple round tables for the communal dining, or larger groups (up to 8). This is an ideal spot for 2-4 people. 6+ may cause you to wait longer for seating. 3. The tap water tastes kind of weird. They bring you a hot cup of tea too but the herbal taste is a bit too strong for me. 4. The bbq items are just okay :( I did a 3 item bbq combo with rice for about $21. You get a generous portion of meat, rice and a few pieces of steamed Chinese broccoli (gai lan). No sauce to dip or anything, but they do have a black bean sauce on the table to use. The sauce is pretty salty though, so just keep that in mind when you're adding it on. No spicy condiments on the table unfortunately. The duck was decent, but the bbq pork was a bit too lean for me. It wasn't overly sweet though so that was nice. The roast pork wasn't crunchy at all!! For some reason, they thin sliced it, instead of cut it into cubes. I love roast pork for the crunch so this was disappointing. The skin was more chewy than crunchy. All of the meats were tender though! 5. Fresh shrimp rice roll was hot and steamy and the price is cheaper than some dim sum spots ($7.50 for this one i think). However, you also get less shrimp. The sauce poured on was also kinda thin, and not sweet or umami enough. The rice roll itself had a good chew though, silky but a little thick. It holds up well while eating. The proportion go shrimp to rice noodle is waaaay off though. 6. Wonton noodle soup was good! This seemed like the crowd favorite as most everyone ordered this. The noodle could have had a bit more chew to it, but the wontons were bouncy and the broth comforting. You get a couple pieces of chinese broccoli with this too which is nice. The service was efficient and our main server was nice. She spoke english and actually smiled back. They take card payment too, so that's convenient. You really get some bang for your buck here, but I'd probably stick to taking food to go. read more

They close super early, so get there in time for take out for dinner (I think they close at like 6?) Parking is an actual nightmare unless you're willing to pay or walk. Hole in the wall-ish; in the plaza with the escalators (and the paint of this plaza that graciously never changes) we all that grew up from the Bay Area remembers and is nostalgic of. Then when someone orders this, they put it in the steamer to heat up, resulting in that spongy condensation vibe. To me, their congee is one of the best I have had. Their rice plates are ordinary but delicious too. Their stir fried noodles are very oily. Their fried rice is well made. Their rice rolls are tiny compared to other establishments. Went to the dentist for a filling on Saturday morning and had my mouth numbed, so what to eat but porridge! When I think of a porridge spot in Oakland Chinatown, the first place that comes to mind is Gum Kuo! I feel like it's such a classic, and one of the view spots that have been around forever and is still open. Though I actually haven't been too many times! We ended up getting an egg and beef porridge, a fish fillet porridge, a duck cherng fun, and a beef cherng fun. The best was def the beef porridge. Nice and smooth and well seasoned. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed by the fish porridge. I thought they would use basa fillets, but they used a different type of fish with the skin on, so it ended up being much more fishy than I like. The duck cherng fun was unique, and I liked the flavor combination of the roast duck and rice noodle roll, but the cherng fun itself could have been more soft and smooth. They have a decent amount of seating in the restaurant especially in the back and do take credit card which is nice. The prices are also quite reasonable ranging around $10-$15ish per dish. My go to order is the half peking duck and it is crispy, juicy and fatty, and definitely a must try if you go. They serve much the same food as other restaurants, but what is disappointing is their portion size. Their prices are average, yet the portion sizes are smaller than at other restaurants. The crispy pork belly was served on a small plate, barely enough for four people; the same goes for their fried rice. However, the taste and quality of their food are excellent--the sweet and sour chicken was addictive, and their sautéed string beans had a lot of flavor. Customer service was also on the lower end. We were seated in the back, directly next to where most of the employees walked by; however, no one really paid attention to us, even when we tried to call for assistance. Our water was never refilled until the end, and the wait for the check was long. In the heart of Oakland Chinatown, there are a ton of diverse options for Chinese cuisine, but Gum Kuo's combination of taste, value, and convenience make it hard to beat. Some of the key parts of Chinese American cuisine has always been the assortment of bbq meats that are offered, usually displayed hanging on racks or stovetops right at the windows for passerbys like myself to get lured in. Gum Kuo offers bbq in abundance, ranging from bbq pork char siu, crispy roast pork/pork belly, roast duck/peking duck, etc. You can order by the pound or 1/2 pound depending on the meat and for a great price, you can get some heaping portions to last multiple meals or for a party. The char siu and duck are among my favorites to get as they are incredibly juicy and pair very well with any rice dish or noodle soup. Speaking of soups, Gum Kuo also boasts, in my opinion, the best wonton soup I have had. For under $10, you can get a ton of flavorful wontons in a delicious hearty soup with or without noodles and can also be topped with that delicious pork or duck which pair great with the juicy wontons. Lastly, this spot also has some great rice rolls (cheung fun) with bbq pork or shrimp for a great price comparable to the other dim sum spots in the area. Usually I will only do take out but there is a good enough amount of seating inside the restaurant to make it a good spot for a quick lunch or dinner, although parking is always an issue in this highly congested and popular area. The food is good, but I suggest focusing on Cantonese dishes. The sampan congee was really good in terms of the stuff they added to the congee base...they allow for extras, like I added preserved egg...but the congee base itself was quite bland. Frankly, the lack of sodium is probably a good trend to set as you can always add more. I ended up adding salt, white pepper, and soy sauce to make mine better. The other dishes were pretty amazing. Nostalgic for me to come here for the first time since I was a teen. They don't speak English, not a lick of it and you know that's when the food is going to be amazing. The entrance is cramped with people ordering from the food bar and I should've just asked to be seated instead of waiting because they had no idea what I asked for when it was finally my turn. So I just sat down and ended up eating there instead of takeout like I originally planned. I pointed at the menu or food item to order. I got thousand egg porridge, seafood porridge, pig blood dish and chicken feet. I didn't like that chicken feet, it just wasn't the texture I prefer but there was nothing wrong with the quality. The blood I added to my porridge and it was so good even on its own. The sauce on it is great. Wish they had fish sauce for me to use on the side but not surprised they didn't. Should've ordered some duck to go because it looked so good. This is not a place that's good for people who have no idea what they want and I'd suggest looking up the menu beforehand. This is also not the place where you should expect good service if you can't speak Cantonese/mandarin, they do not give any additional service other than taking and bringing your order in that case. I ordered a duck and wonton noodle soup, a bbq pork rice noodle roll and a balsam pear aka bitter melon with shredded chicken rice noodle. The food came out within 10 minutes. The pork rice noodle rolls is made with legit quality pork slices and not ground pork. The yellow chives inside each roll is a standard in cantonese rice noodle rolls. We also got the fish porridge. Sorry they devoured half of it before I even got to take a picture. The fish is fresh and comes in huge chunks. We also ordered rice noodle soup with pork and preserved vegetable and fried egg. The noodles are Q Q chewy and the portion is very generous. The hong kong milk tea is classic and standard. We also got a roast duck to-go. The service is no frills, like many other chinese places. Solid Cantonese bbq spot in Oakland Chinatown. I've only ever gotten various meats for takeout from here, but everything I've tried was pretty good. My go to is their roast duck, which is $17.50 for half and $33.95 for a full. It's not cheap, but the meat is more flavorful and moist compared to some of the other bbq shops I've tried. Both the siu yuk (roast pork) and chasiu (bbq pork) go for $12.95/lb, so prices are reasonable. I don't like chasiu so I've never had that here, but their siu yuk is good as well. The best deal here is their spiced duck feet and wings, which only go for $3.95/lb. I love snacking on them! There's also seating here so you can order and eat here, but I've never eaten here as I prefer to bring the food home to eat. read more

Gum Kuo is such a staple for Chinese/Cantonese food. I've came here for years with my family and still do when I am craving porridge. The quality of the porridge has changed (as noted by my family and myself), I still like it but it is watered down from its golden years. In addition to porridge, I also get noodles, rice rolls, fried doughnuts to dip in the porridge, and anything else I'm craving. The barbecue is quite popular, but the star of my visits is always the porridge. Street parking is $2/hour, the paid lot is $3/hour, unless you come on a Sunday or holiday then it's free parking. There are no restrooms in the restaurant, you'll have to ask for a key and walk to a separate area of the plaza. Remember, you are coming for the food and not for the ambiance or service! That's how you know the food is great. The Gum Kuo here is the original and better than the other chain that opened up in Dublin. I highly recommend dining here! read more

Fast service. Portion of the food is okay. Variety of choices and different types of food are on the menu. Roasted chicken, pork spareribs, roasted ducks, etc are popular items. Congees are what most people go for. Try them out. The restaurant is located there for a long time and making name for itself. By the way it could be loud there. Front door is always opened during business hour so no so good to sit in winter. read more

I visited on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm and there was a bit of a line but it went fast, waited no longer than 15mins. I noticed it's a place people go to get a quick bite to eat since service is fast. I saw a number of single eaters site down eat and leave within a 20-30min time frame. We ordered: Chicken wings: simple fried chicken wing with the perfect crisp! Shrimp rice noodles: tasted very fresh but some of the noodle pieces were huge! Jook: had a good thickness to it, prob the better jook I've had Roasted duck wonton noodle soup: soo good! Duck had good flavor, wontons were plump and egg noodles were good, but the broth a was a bit salty for my liking. I would return for a quick bit to eat in Oakland! read more
