I can see why ju-ni doesn't have a Michelin star anymore. My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Chef Geoffrey Lee did not even say hello to us or ask what we were celebrating. None of the staff asked as well. The only time Geoffrey spoke to us was when he introduced each dish or fish. The service was very low effort and my experience was definitely dampened by that. I've been to quite a few omakase restaurants and this is the worst one in terms of service from a chef. However, the waitresses were attentive and did well. Out of the 12 course, I enjoyed about 5 of them. I will have to say the ankimo, baby red snapper, and handroll (from leftover pieces of fish) were amongst my favorites. The one pro is that we finished our dinner in about 1.5 hours. They charge an automatic 20% for tip. It was nice to try this place, but I would not recommend it to my friends or family.

Exceptional omakase experience in an intimate setting Ju-Ni delivers outstanding omakase in the heart of SF. With only 12 seats, the attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the meal. The fish quality is impeccable. What stood out most was the hotate--unlike the frozen scallops common elsewhere, this was clearly fresh, with a firm texture and satisfying bite I've never experienced before. Ikura with frozen ankimo grated on top was also very memorable. Every piece reflected thoughtful preparation (cuts on each neta to their choice of nikiri or salt) and sourcing. In addition, the chef prepares everything directly in front of you, offering detailed explanations for each course with genuine enthusiasm and expertise. We paired the omakase with Dassai 23. The sake selection is curated to just four options, which actually makes choosing easier--and each one is a solid choice. Service is flawless. Within minutes of being seated, our server noticed my companion was left-handed and adjusted her place setting accordingly. Throughout the meal, she anticipated every need--I only noticed my sake or water was low when she appeared to refill it. That level of attentiveness is rare. The ambiance is refreshingly understated: clean, simple decor that lets the food take center stage without distraction. No gimmicks, just an exceptional dining experience. Highly recommended for anyone seeking quality omakase in SF.

Absolutely incredible omakase sushi here. If you have a chance to go, don't overthink it, just make the reservation. I've gone twice now and had the chef JK both times who is a pleasure to talk to. My husband who isn't a fan of uni had the fresh uni here in the spoon and was converted! My other favorite is the zuke toro with caviar, although the shirayaki eel was also insane. It's an intimate place with 6 guests served by each chef and there's only two chefs so 12 guests at a seating.

14 course menu omakase, the Kanoachi was my favorite!

Im not a huge sushi guy, but I was hungry and had my camera. So lets write a review. We tried their omakase sushi, and we got Brian as our chef. Super nice guy! Loved chatting with him. Very friendly and super knowledgeable about the culture and sushi. The sushi itself? Even though I'm not a sushi guy, I can taste the quality. They start you off with the menu, explain what went in to prepping your piece of sushi and the complex flavor. Then you actually try it and I was able to enjoy the flavors. Their menu changes, so your experience varies. We were very satisfied with ours. My favorite one? The kanpachi! Super buttery and tasted great with their rice. Oh yah, ask them about their rice. Its kind of a bragging point. Look, I'm an oinker...was I hungry at the end of the night? Yah, I could still eat. Would I have gone broke before I got full? Probably. But its a nice date night spot for that occasion treat. Dont forget to make reservations...

Food wise, everything was amazing. The rice was warm, lightly seasoned, and the fish was delicious. The toro caviar was my favorite because of how soft and delicate it was, which paired perfectly with the saltiness of the caviar. Ambience wise it was a little different than what I'm used to, so it could just be as expected for the area, but all of the omakases iv experienced, the noise volume is usually kept to a low/mid tone, to not detract from the intimate dining experience and it was very loud and chatty here. The meal was a little late to start as well. Although it was only 10 minutes, omakase is typically very time sensitive with punctuality being important in Japanese culture. Food: 9.5/10 Service: 9/10 Ambience: 5/10

This place is small and intimate. You have your own sushi chef and sit at the counter and watch them make what you are going to be eating. We had many fresh cuts of fresh fish flown in from Japan. Items like squid that I thought I would never eat ended up being my go to favorite items on the menu. The only downside was my husband left a little hungry because portions are not huge. Must try spot at least once especially if you love fish

Their newest chef, Chef/Owner Geoff Lee, and the gang from Houston, TX! What a great experience!!

Ju-Ni... what took me so long to dine at this delivery omakase right near my house??!! It was such a lovely experience to be catered to by all the attentive staff throughout the evening. I glanced at besties, couples and good friend sharing great food, drinks and intimate conversations. I met up 2 of my friends from high school (Alief represent!!) visiting from Texas. We shared stories and determined that every bite was better than the last... so much so in fact - we didn't grab a single photo of the courses because it pretty much disappeared as soon as it appeared in front of us. Fish was fresh - melts in your mouth 10/10, Service 10/10 and $$ - worth every penny!!! Chef Geoff Lee is super down to earth and super friendly - also home grown.

Fun and delicious experience, great for celebrations. Fish shipments from Japan arrive every Tuesday and Friday. Be sure to fill up on fiber for lunch before you come here, there's a small salad to start and that's 95% of the fiber you'll see rest of the night (some seaweed here and there). Every piece of nigiri was amazing and had its unique taste & texture. The hand roll was extraordinary because it had a little bit of everything. My favorite was the unagi, which was crispy (unlike any other eels that I've had in the past). The miso soup and ice cream at the end was a wonderful finish. Unlike some of the other fine dinning spots, this one leaves you with a full belly. Strongly recommend. JK, our sushi chef of the night, was friendly and humorous. We've also enjoyed our conversations.

Food: 4.4/5, service: 4.8/5, ambience: 4/5 The sushi was incredibly fresh. They selected premium fishes that were airflown from Japan. In terms of flavor, some bites were incredible and some were just repetitive. They used the same sauce and lemon juice for many bites. The cut was soooo thin. Rice was very tiny. If we didn't order additional pieces, we would definitely get a 2nd dinner I especially loved the Japanese green eye and Hokkaido scallop. The ice cream monkfish shaving was their signature but wasn't my fav. Overall it's a very pricey meal that left me wanting for more. Compared to other omakase in the city, they stood out for quality and ... High price

Well well well! Finally got to try the famous omakase offering from Ju-ni, the formerly Michelin-starred restaurant in my neighborhood. TBH, I was somewhat disappointed with what they had to offer, but all in all still a really good meal. This is as solid 3.5 star rounded up to 4. Came with 3 friends a few weeks back. We got the Omakase tasting menu. It started with a beet salad. Unfortunately my experience didn't start off great, I'll spare the details but had to remove some of the food from my plate. The salad was good, though. We then started on our journey of an assortment of different freshly prepared fish dishes. Everything was good, just not great for me. While I ended up being really full, my friend was left a little hungry. I'll note that my two friends absolutely loved everything, though.

Jū-ni was originally named for their 12 seats (4 customers per chef, 3 chefs) but they later added in additional seating to accommodate another set of diners. So they have 4 chefs and 16 seats. All of the chefs are wonderful. I've had this place bookmarked for ages and a friend of mine surprised me with dinner here. Reserve and prepay is $200. They are quite popular, and for good reason. Make sure to book at least 2 weeks in advance for the weekend. Weekdays typically have some availability. Our chef Brian was really sweet, funny, knowledgeable, and attentive. I've been enjoying omakase in the US and Japan for over 10 years now, and I find Ju-ni to be one of my favorites for chefs counter. I'm introverted and shy, but he really added warmth to our tables experience. Everything was relaxing, intimate, and delicious. I wish I could get the Japanese plum snapper delivered to my door. I'm also a sucker for hand rolls and the one at the end was amazing. **Make sure to get the uni. You will be missing out if you don't** I'm hungry, I want to go again.

Marlon T.

I finally got a chance to try out Ju-Ni and after all these years and yes the gourmet nigiri fix you seek will be satisfied here no doubt. The price is fair and I would recommend getting at least 1-2 add-ons. Ju-ni in Japanese means 12 because originally there were 12 seats. There are 16 seats now so technically the name should be Ju-roku (Japanese for 16). I'd give 5 stars, but the service was a little lackluster. Albeit, this is a solid choice for omokase in SF!

This was my first experience at an omakase, and it absolutely delivered! The restaurant strikes a perfect balance between sleek minimalism and warmth. The seating is comfortable and spacious while still maintaining a sense of intimacy. Our chef was incredibly knowledgable, and helpful in guiding our group of first-timers. Service was amazing as well. While the price point is steep, the craftsmanship mostly justifies the expense. Here are some of the courses I would like to highlight. Salad: A simple salad to start off with. Tossed with a light vinaigrette. The sweet beetroot was a welcome addition. Satisfying, although a little mundane. Ume Madai (Japanese Plum Snapper): The light and lean snapper carried floral notes and a hint of cinnamon. Delightful! Hotate (Hokkaido Scallop): Absolutely gorgeous. The scallop had ideal density and plumpness, with a clean maritime sweetness. Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper): Tender, delicate, with a complex flavor palette. Really liked this one. Zuke Toro with Caviar (Soy Cured Fatty Tuna): Mind-blowingly good. The textural interplay delivered a tidal wave of umami that was nothing short of revelationary. The fatty tuna melted to coat the sushi rice perfectly and the buttery caviar cranked the it up to an 11. Sawara (Japanese King Mackerel): The accompaniments of this one stole the show. The application of miso and precisely cut chives contributed allium depth and savory complexity that transformed the fish. Ikura with Ankimo (Salmon Roe with Monkfish Pate): The other signature bite of the restaurant. The popping salmon roe with the melting pate was incredible. Creaminess with bursts of umami to break up the monotony. Shirayaki (Grilled Freshwater Eel): Technical mastery on display. The crisp, yet firm, skin yielded to smoky and succulent flesh. Topped off by the hints of spice from the glaze that invoked a mouthwatering response. Kaisui Uni (Unprocessed Hokkaido Sea Urchin): This was an additional add-on that we purchased. The pristine uni delivered custard-like consistency with remarkable freshness, offering oceanic sweetness. Temaki (Handroll): This handroll was comprised of the scraps of the previous cuts of fish, an ingenious way to make use of the high-quality ingredients. This supercut of the evening's progression created a satisfying penultimate savory course, with salmon roe providing textural punctuation. Miso Soup: A traditional palate cleanser executed with technical correctness, but lacking distinctive character. The slightly sweet broth was well-balanced but perhaps too restrained. Ice Cream: Competent though not boundary-pushing. The addition of crumbs was a nice touch however.

How long does the tasting experience usually take?

Ny reservation started at 8pm and ended at around 9:45. So expect it to take 1.5~2hrs.

Do they have a beverage pairing?

Is American Express accepted?

Yes it is! I paid with amex

How do you contact the restaurant if they are not responding back to emails regarding booking a gift card reservation?

Vaccination card required?

How much is Omakase? Their website says $147 per person, but a photo from a 2019 review had the omakase priced at $165. I'm trying to buy a gift card but not sure if $147 pp would be enough.

Omakase is still $147pp (as of Dec 2021), but there is also tax and tips to be added.

About how long does it typically take for them to reply to emails? I have been trying to redeem a gift card for a week now am concerned by the lack of response. Thanks!

I had luck getting a response in about 12 hours regarding a reservation.

Are there still takeout boxes or to-go orders?

Yes but try to experience the dinig room...

Where can we park?

Street parking, super easy a couple blocks away by the park

I have a question about my reservation. I have sent an email to the info email at juni, as well as the info email at tock and called a multitude of times and no one answers or responds. How can I reach the restaurant today?

I emailed info at Juni and received a response within an hour. I believe that's the only way you can reach them as their outgoing phone message states that they don't answer the phone, nor do they listen to voicemails.

I have a question about my reservation but the phone number just rings and rings and no one answers my emails. How do I get a hold of someone?

Please send an email to info@junisf.com.

Hi is walk-in allowed? Thanks

No reservations only

Do they have outdoor dinning for dinner?

yes they have 3 chefs outdoors in a nice seating area. each chef can accommodate 4 people per time slot! it should note indoor or outdoor when you make the reservation

Are they offering indoor dining yet? How is their outdoor Omakase experience?

I have no idea for outdoor dining, but indoor dining was VERY GREAT. Chef was really kind, and sushi cannot be better.

Does the Omakase Takeout Box for Two that's being sold during Covid come with 16 pieces of Nigiri in total, or per person? The website doesn't specify. And also, how many handrolls does it come with?

The box is intended to serve two people. You get a total of 6 hand rolls (3 per person) and we had extra crab and uni after making generous rolls. You also get 16 total pieces of nigiri (8 per person). Our nigiri included 2 different salmon… Read more

What time do the reservations release on Resy?

Should be 12 AM and about a month and a half in advance

Has anyone else been able to make a reservation for a party of 1 online? States that its "unavailable".

Yes, I called to confirm they do not take reservations for one.

How far in advance can I book a reservation? When do new reservations open?

Reservations only go as far as 45 days with only two seating per night 6:30 and 8:30

Can you buy a gift card at the restaurant?

I do not believe so.

We lucked out without a reservation and showed up the moment they opened. However, I noticed this place has A LOT of reservations; therefore, they did give us a time limit (we had a good hour and 30 mins!). If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience, Rintaro is definitely worth checking out. I've been to Japan before, and actually felt like the food we ate was just as good as what you would get in Japan, but more expensive, haha. I also love that their menu focuses on traditional Japanese izakaya dishes rather than just sushi. Everything is meant to be shared, making it a fun dining experience where you can try a little bit of everything. FOOD: 9/10 SERVICE: 9/10 AMBIANCE: 10/10 FOOD: 9/10 The food really showcases the craftsmanship that goes into Japanese cooking. From the handmade udon to the charcoal-grilled skewers that we ordered, every dish felt thoughtfully prepared. I especially appreciated that nothing felt overly complicated. The flavors were simple, balanced, and let the quality of the ingredients shine. The only reason I'm giving it a 9 instead of a perfect 10 is that a few dishes didn't completely wow me for the price, but overall it was a fantastic meal. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer questions or offer recommendations. The restaurant gets busy, but service still felt attentive throughout the meal without making us feel rushed. They do recommend ordering everything at once, as they do run out of things due to the high volume of customers. AMBIANCE: 10/10 The first thing that stood out to me was the ambiance. From the moment you walk in, the warm wood interior, open kitchen, and charcoal grill make you feel like you've stepped into Japan. It has such a cozy and intimate atmosphere that's perfect for a date night or catching up with friends. Rintaro is definitely more of a special occasion spot than an everyday dinner. The quality is there, but because the menu is made up of small plates, the bill can add up pretty quickly. That said, I think it's worth experiencing at least once if you're looking for an authentic izakaya in San Francisco. Overall, I'd definitely come back. The atmosphere alone makes it memorable, and I love that Rintaro focuses on traditional Japanese comfort food instead of being another sushi restaurant. It's the kind of place where you come for the entire experience, not just the meal.

There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. The outdoor area gets pretty hot since it's similar to a greenhouse but nice for photos. We ended up coming back inside since it was too hot outside. The inside spots definitely fill up fast due to the AC and nice ambience but we were lucky someone had just left. Super nice spot to just chill or have a date!

I actually came here twice while on a trip to SF. The Cafe turns into a bar at night. So the first…read morenight I had the Kohaku, which was a whiskey drink. I pretty much try any creamy drink that has a whipped egg white. This was an amazing drink, bright citrus, smokey whiskey, and a creamyness from the egg. Next the Miran Miyagi oysters were very fresh, I forgot what was in it, but there was some crunchy bits for texture and there was also a good kick of spice. The Hojicha Affogato was their dessert, and it was also great. It had dark chocolate gelato and a raspberry compote. I came back to try the Matcha Einspanner since I heard good things about it. I never had one before, but if they're all like this, then I love einspanners. It had a super thick whipped cream with a nice high quality matcha. The service was also very friendly. And since this is a bar/ cafe, it's super chill vibes.

Stumbled into this spot expecting a simple all‑you‑can‑eat sushi run and ended up having one of the…read morebest dining experiences I've had in a long time. The vibe is super friendly, the music sets the perfect mood, and it's low‑key enough that you can actually relax and enjoy your food without feeling rushed or crowded. The sushi itself is amazing -- fresh, flavorful, and way better than what you'd expect from most AYCE places. What really impressed me is their policy: if you order a roll and don't finish it, they charge you for it, but half of that goes to a food bank. I love that they're intentional about reducing waste and giving back to the community. Service was great, the atmosphere was chill, and the food was top‑tier. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommend if you want quality sushi without the chaos.

Sushi Uma is a small sushi spot located in SF. They have paid street parking available (meter), but…read moreare also located near a couple of public transportation stops too. I went after typical dinner time, but it doesn't seem to be super busy in general. We got: * Cherry Blossom Roll * Unagi Roll * Sake Roll * Kappa Maki Roll Had no complaints taste-wise (tasted the same as all other sushi spots). Nothing stood out, but I appreciated that the Cherry Blossom Roll wasn't stuffed with fake crab (had raw salmon inside instead). Price-wise, they're about the same as other sushi spots. Their AYCE deal looks pretty good, so I'd come back to try that if I'm ever in the area. The service was average (filled our waters occasionally, but didn't really check in on us that much and the service didn't stand out to me). Overall, this is a safe, mediocre spot for sushi.

We have been going to Akiko's for years. When my wife's family visits, they want Akiko's. When my…read morefamily visits, they want Akiko's. There are some omakase staples that we always look forward to: the shokupan and chawanmushi especially. We also love seeing what is in season, and I have seen the menu change weekly. In the dozen or so times I have gone, I have never been disappointed in the quality or quantity. I agree with other reviews that the taste is more fusion/experimental than straight traditional omakase. For me, that is part of the draw. I also agree that Akiko's is pricier, but we also go for special occasions rather than a standing weekly or monthly reservation. Parking can be tricky in the area, but there are apps that can help with that.

It's a cool space but rather too large and stand offish for a truly great omakase meal. Service was…read morealso bumpy. We noted our dietary restrictions on the reservation and the host confirmed that but the menus aren't customized for each guest (which I'd expect for a high end omakase with less than 10 guests during our seating). Then the first server showed up and started describing the opening course of 3 small plates, 2 of which contained shellfish. When we asked about it, he just backtracked and said "That's not lobster" and then walked away. We were also never asked what we would like to drink - I finally asked the sushi chef for tea and he ran to the back to communicate that. There was also no real interaction with the sushi chef the entire meal so it felt impersonal and sterile. Food notes: maybe the selection was just not for me that day but there was only 1 course I enjoyed (kinmedai) and by the end I was eating a bite and leaving the rest and dreading the next course. The fish flavors felt very strong and overwhelming and the sushi rice was so wet that every piece fell apart on the way from the plate to the mouth.
