This place was one of the first of many xlb places that brought some actual good quality xlb into SF. I believe now they own more than 6 different dumpling places around the bay including Dumpling Story and Dumpling Hour. My partner and I loved this location when it first opened. But now it seemed to have gone down in quality. Expect a wait if you want to come here, but the line does move fast. We ordered the pan fried pork bao, pork and chives dumplings, pigs ears appetizer, and the hot and sour soup. The pork and chives dumpling was our favorite, the skin had a good chew and the flavorful filling to skin ratio was great. However the rest of the order was disappointing. The pan fried pork bao was not very hot, and the fried skin was not crispy and a bit doughy. Kind of like it's been sitting out awhile and there weren't much juice inside. The pigs ear dish doesn't taste properly cooked, it has a bit more funk than I liked, plus it was cut really sloppily. Overall was not a bad experience, but for the price and the waiting you could really get better dumplings at one of their other locations. You'll find better restaurant ambiance than this one which is usually super busy and majority outside seating.
I've been here twice, but now I'm finally writing a review. Huge fan of the pork sesame and chili oil boiled dumplings. Had it the first time and the second time, didn't disappoint. The flavor is good, the wrapping isn't too thick or hard. The right balance of sauce for me. Juicy pork bao was great also. Super fun to eat and suck out the broth, and perfectly crispy on the bottom. Great flavor as well. Also really liked the Dan Dan noodles. The noodle texture was super chewy, perfect. Sauce ratio and meat was good. Get it if you want a noodle dish, not a meat dish. The flavor and texture of the noodles stood out the most over the minced pork. The crab and pork XLB was a hit with my friends but I thought it was alright both times. It's not bad, and there's a good crab flavor but I just think the other two dumplings and dishes I reviewed are better. Potato salad I wasn't a fan of. But dipping it in the vinegar really helped. It had some sort of strange floral flavor. When I went, it was busy around 6:30. If you go around 6 on a Tuesday, there was no wait at all. 5:30 on a Sunday, had a 30 minute wait. Service was nice and efficient. A cosy setting and crowded.
YUM I loved everything we got here, especially the pan fried dumplings which come fried on the bottom and boiled on the top. They were so juicy and delicious but also had the crispy texture. I also loved the Xiaolongbao and you can even watch them hand-make them while waiting in line for the restroom. We ordered the famous "numb and spicy" ones, but I didn't find them to be spicy at all--maybe I just have high spice tolerance? They were still so delicious. The cucumbers were also addicting. There's a digital waitlist inside the door that you put your name in and they text you when your table is ready. We didn't have to wait that long at all despite there being a line out the door when we got there. Service is extremely fast. All of our food came out immediately besides the xiaolongbao.
Only order their dumplings, don't order the other dishes. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles, the Juicy Beef Bao, the Beef Xiao Long Bao, the Season Beef Pockets, Green Beans, Green onion pancakes, and the vegetable bao. Worst order: DO NOT ORDER THE DAN DAN NOODLES. They came out cold so it was basically inedible, and there was very little sauce and seasoning so it was extremely bland. IT was defintely the worst dan dan noodles I've ever had. I was warned by a friend to not order their dan dan noodles because they also came out cold and bland when she ordered it previously, but I was assuming that was a one off instance. But it seems like their noodles are always cold and tasteless. Best order: The Juicy Beef Bao was really really good. The soup inside of the bao is really rich and flavorful. The bottom of the bao is pan fried and the top is steamed so each bite is a really satisfying texture. If I came again, which I probably won't, I'd definitely order this again. Their beef xiao long baos were also pretty good. The soup inside was also tasty. The Green beans also came out pretty cold, so I wasn't a fan. The taste and texture was good but any dish being cold ruins it. The vegetable dumplings were also pretty yummy! I will have tp say they get bonus points for having many vegetarian friendly options (I'm not vegetarian but my friends are). The green onion pancake were alright. Service etc: We came on Sunday 12pm and had to wait 20min for a table because it was pretty packed. The food came out pretty quickly but that's because the food was cold already, so I would've preferred if they took longer with the food if it was warmer. All in all, I probably wouldn't come to this spot again and would keep looking for a better dumpling restaurant. But if I came again I would only order the dumplings and get none of the side dishes.
This spot has been on my list for quite a while and I'm glad I was finally in the area to give it a try! I'd say this definitely deserves high praise, and I didn't mind waiting in line before opening at 5pm, but I probably wouldn't wait longer than an hour for a table to open up. I ordered the Dan Dan noodles, chili oil pork wontons and pork xiao long bao and these were all some of the best I've had, even compared to some favorite spots in China Town. The Dan Dan noodles had a more sesame or almost peanut buttery flavor mixed with the chili oil than I've had at other places, and I really enjoyed this. The chili oil pork wontons were pretty standard but hit the spot, and the pork xiao long bao were big, soupy and flavorful! Those are probably the best xiao long bao that I've had. I would definitely come back to try other XLB, some pan fried options, and their crispy chicken wings, as those all looked good at other tables!
When we got there we had a group of 11 people and were seated very quickly. Staff were very friendly and worked quickly. The inside of the restaurant had nice lighting and the restaurant was very nice and cozy. The food was absolutely delicious. The broth in the juicy pork steamed baos had so many flavors. Everything was so flavorful and there's a reason why this place has a Michelin bib. For being so good, it was super cheap compared to other restaurants that offer mid food. Would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a great meal
Honestly just 10/10 everything. The food here is so high quality and fresh, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We got about 5 different varieties of dumplings and the Brussel sprouts. Again everything was delicious! Quick service, and authentic experience. Always a blast to go to on a date or with a group so you can order a lot and share. Outdoor and indoor seating - the outdoor is cute! Street parking nearby isn't impossible to get.
Came here for the soup pork dumplings! Let me tell you, they did not disappoint. Came on a Saturday a little before they opened. There was already a line. They do go quick so not too bad of a wait. Also ordered the potstickers but preferred the soup dumplings. Have option of ordering 4pc/8pc. We loved it so much we got another order and finished!
This place is awesome. Absolutely fantastic. Get everything but my favorites are the pork and veg potstickers, spring rolls and cucumbers in garlic sauce. We also had Dan Dan noodles, pork xlb, and pork dumplings w/chili oil & sesame sauce. But for real, get the spring rolls and potstickers. So flavorful and delicious. It's in a cute little spot, but parking is tough. I suggest you Uber or walk there.

Service was fast and perfection 10/10 we got the Juice pork bao 10/10 Pork xiao long bao10/10 Chicken wing dry fried wings 10/10 Quality's was perfect for two people total was $58 totally worth it Ambiance was very cozy to us. They have outside sitting but get there quick as soon as they open because it doesn't get busy but so worth the wait
It's not a dumpling house, it's a dumpling home. And it's run efficient as a military base. We showed up within an hour or so of closing and there was a long line. Had to sign up for the list on yelp, but even at 16th spot in line we sat in 25 mins just as predicted. The dumplings were very delicious. Our spicy pork wontons were ok but needed a lot more chili oil sauce. Great food and would go back for sure
During lunch break while attending an opera festival at SF Conservatory of Music, we found Dumpling Home which is within walking distance from SFCM. There was a long waiting list and the restaurant was packed with people, inside and outside sitting area. We waited about 20 minutes. The waitresses cleaned and set up the table for us very efficiently. We ordered right away since we already knew what we wanted. The food came quickly. We ordered 'Numb and Spicy XLB (4 pcs), Napa Cabbage with Pork dumplings (8 pcs), Juicy Pork Bao (pan fried) (6 pcs). They were quite flavorful, the skin was especially good that the XLB did not stuck to the paper underneath it. We were (3 of us) quite pleased so we also ordered 'Pork Dumpling with Sesame Sauce and Chili Oil'. They were quite good and the spiciness was acceptable. Let's talk about the service. The restaurant was very busy, the wait was long, but once we sat down, the food came quickly. The waitresses were very busy but still provided good service. It is a Michelin one star restaurant and I agree and highly recommend it and will visit again in the future.
We lucked out coming on Saturday at 1 hoping for a spot. We only waited about 20mins and knew immediately what we wanted to order. We've been here once before and our lives were changed. We ordered 2 orders of the juicy pan fried pork bao and 1 order of the numb and spicy xlb. These two are the must orders. Please order these. I'm drooling reflecting on this experience. This place gets so so busy and it's understandable why because these are the best dumplings we've had in the bay so far.
WAY too good Chinese Food in Hayes Valley. I met some friends in SF on a weekday and they said we should come here, the lines are hours long on the weekend and this was a rare change to be able to just walk in and get a table. It was still very crowded for a Wednesday lunch, we came at 12:30 with a party of 6 but were still able to get immediate seating. Ordering is very easy, staff is attentive and they have their system down. Food came very quickly. Vegetables: These were SO good and set a good expectation for the dumplings. We ordered the cucumbers, brussel sprouts, green beans, and okra. All of them are delicious though the ones that really stood out were the okra and brussel sprouts. I don't normally order these because they are hard to cook correctly but they are perfect here. Scallion Noodles: Not too oily and nice al dente noodles, it looks plain but tastes amazing. Dumplings: We got the XLB, spicy chili wonton appetizer, shrimp and squash, numb and spicy XLB, and pan fried dumplings. All of these were good but the ones I will remember are the numb and spicy XLB and the pan fried dumplings. The pan fried dumplings are more bite sized and easier to eat than normal. They look cute and I felt less soup is wasted. If you like mildy spicy and numbing the XLB is unique and so good I had to help finish off the last one even though I was full. read more

Maybe one of our favorite xiao long bao places to visit, Dumpling Home never disappoints. The dumplings are steamed and pan fried to perfection every time. And they're always piping hot with a spoonful of delicious soup encased in every single one. Arrive at least an hr before you want to eat to put your name on the waiting list. Trust me, it's worth the wait. It's a small restaurant with lots of tables and they turn them over pretty quickly to accommodate the waiting customers. Our favorites are the dumplings of course but some notable add ons are the green beans and wings too. read more
Dumpling Home was easily one of our top four meals during our San Francisco trip, alongside Udon Mugizo, San Tung, and Pineapple King. I love how you can order half portions of their xiao long bao, which makes it easy to sample more items from the menu. The XLBs weree thin, juicy, and delicious. Be prepared for soup explosion with every bite! The pan-fried dumplings were probably the best we've ever had. Not only were they delicious, but their unique shape made them stand out from the usual versions we've tried elsewhere. The steamed dumplings were equally impressive, soft, tender, and just as juicy. You'll want to bite into them carefully, unless you're like my husband and decide to pop the whole thing into your mouth at once. Another surprise favorite was the dan dan noodles. We loved that the noodles were served warm. Most versions we've had elsewhere are closer to room temperature, so this was a very nice surprise. Once mixed together, the dish was so flavorful. Our food arrived quickly, but midway through the meal we realized we had forgotten to order a vegetable dish. We added the stir-fried eggplant which unfortunately seemed to throw off the timing a bit and didn't arrive until near the end of our meal. By then, we were already stuffed, and the eggplant was a little too salty on its own. I think it would have paired much better with rice or noodles. Lesson learned for next time! We visited on a Thursday evening and were lucky enough to find street parking shortly after 6 p.m. We were seated immediately, but a line started forming not long after. The expectation was high and it was exceeded! The XLB dumplings were absolutely amazing. I'm no connoisseur, but do try them whenever I see them on a menu and these were hands down the best. The cucumber salad was refreshing and perfectly vinegary and garlicky. Drooling writing this review and can't wait to go back try more menu items. read more
Everyone is right - these might be some of the best dumplings I've ever had! We added ourselves to the wait list and told them we'd prefer to wait for an indoor table since it was raining. We shared some tea to start and then ordered the crab and pork soup dumplings, spicy pork soup dumplings, pork pan fried dumplings, and string beans. I've never had pan fried dumplings similar to these. They are SO JUICY - beware!!!! Wow everything was so good. read more

Dumpling Home is my go-to restaurant whenever someone is visiting from out of town. The food is consistently delicious! Wait times can get long, especially on the weekends, but well worth it! Pan fried pork baos (10/10) - the bao is thin, and the bottom is fried to crispy golden brown. The inside is filled with yummy soup. It's an explosion of flavor and different textures! Beef tongue (10/10) - tried this for the first time and it didn't disappoint. Braised beef tongue with special soy sauce on top. This dish is served cold. Green beans (9/10) Dan Dan noodles (9/10) Beef noodle soup (7.5/10) - clear broth beef noodle soup. The broth wasn't hot enough and the noodles expanded a little too much by the time I finished the bowl. read more

The outdoor seating was nice (and super nice of them to provide blankets if you're cold). We ordered the zha jiang noodles, which was super colorful and nicely portioned. The mushroom + chicken dumplings were also good, but I wouldn't say they were spectacular (solid dipping sauce though). I liked the pork baos the most by far--they came out piping hot and were filled with pork juices, so be careful when biting in! Very tasty! I liked their chili sauce on the noodles so be sure to ask for it! Food was good, but I'm not sure if it justifies the typical (long) wait time. It seems on par with Dough Zone in the South Bay, but I definitely see the hype read more
Long wait, but great casual fooding. A bit of a wait when we got there. Ended up being about 30 minutes. Was eventually seated and got to ordering. Ordered pork fried dumplings, pork xlb, and chicken boiled dumplings. The fried dumplings were out of this world - def would just order a bunch of these next time. The xlb was pretty good too but just doesn't hold up to the fried dumplings. The steamed dumplings were a bit of a miss. Would def come back and chow down on the fried dumplings. read more

Dropped in for lunch recently on a Sunday around noon and the place was packed with a healthy group of people on the waiting list before us which was a good sign for the food quality. The front desk quoted us 25 minutes but we were called after only about 15 minutes which was great. Our server was friendly and helped us select between a few options we had in mind. She checked on us frequently to ensure we had everything we needed. Everything we ordered was spectacular. The green beans, cow tongue and pork soup dumplings in particular stood out as our favorites. Will absolutely visit again soon. read more
Great location in the middle of Hayes Valley and very clearly a popular dining spot. Waited around 30min for a table for 2 on a Friday evening, which was not too bad. Definitely at least a tad bit more expensive than a hole in the wall dumpling spot you might find in other parts of SF, but worth a try. I tried the zha jiang noodles, shiitake mushroom and chicken dumplings, and juicy pork bao. The noodles and dumplings were both pretty good, but the pork baos were hands down the star of the show. Amazing food, went on a Friday during lunchtime and there was no wait. We walked here from my friends place so didn't pay attention how the parking was but it is street parking. We got the Dan dan noodle, pan fried pork bun and xiao long bao. Everything was incredible, flavor was so good and made well. The pan fried pork bun had so much juice inside and flavor was so good. The xiao long bao was also incredible, the skin was super thin and flavor was authentic. Not the cheapest meal, all together was $50 before tax and tip but I feel like that's normal nowadays. We showed up on a busy Friday night and ended up waiting about 30 minutes--fair, considering they weren't taking reservations and the dining room was completely packed. Check‑in was simple: add your name to the tablet inside, then join the small crowd perched on stools outside. The wait actually added to the anticipation, and once we were seated outdoors, it felt worth it. The food was the highlight from the very first dish. The sake set the tone, clean and smooth, and everything that followed was a parade of bold flavors and great textures. The large beef soup was deeply comforting and rich without being heavy. The cold, thinly sliced pig ear and the cold tongue in a "thousand‑year‑old" sauce were both surprisingly delicate--chewy, savory, and full of character. The jellyfish salad was crisp and refreshing, a perfect contrast to the warm, silky eggplant that might be one of the most flavorful versions I've had anywhere. And then came the shu mai: easily among the best dim sum I've ever tasted. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, and wrapped with care, it was the kind of dish that makes you pause mid‑conversation. Despite the wait and the outdoor seating, the food more than justified the experience. This was our first stop on a dumpling crawl and one of the most recommended spots in Hayes Valley. Since we had our dog with us, we sat outdoors - easy seating and a comfortable setup. Service was friendly and quick. We ordered, ate, and wrapped up everything in about 20 minutes, which made it a great crawl-friendly stop. We tried the Boiled Shiitake Mushroom Dumplings here as well, along with the Veggie Dumplings (4 pieces). The 4-piece option is nice if you don't want to overeat, though it does feel a bit pricey for the portion. That said, the shiitake mushroom dumplings really stood out- flavorful and satisfying. what can i say? no notes. 10/10. The service was great! i didn't need to wait for a table, i was sat instantly as i walked in. i ordered the dry cooked green beans, the numb and spicy pork dumplings and the juicy beef bao. The chili oil is a MUST with these items. the ambiance was okay! it was packed, but the servers did such a good job with the amount of people that were there. i want to go back immediately. read more
Came on a Monday at 11:40am, 10 mins after opening, as a party of 1. No wait! Service was attentive and the interior was cozy. Was recommended by a friend to try, in his opinion, the most outstanding item to get here: the mala numb & spicy pork xiao long bao. I got the 8 piece order, and it was enough to make me feel satisfied. First off, the dumpling skin was phenomenal. It was SO thin, but still had a nice bite/chewiness. Might be the best XLB dough I've ever had. Inside there was plenty of meat and a good amount of juice. The flavor was deep and rich, but not too salty. I personally would've liked the mala spice to be slightly stronger, but that's coming from someone who doesn't mind eating the actual peppercorn. The filling was also definitely slightly sweetened - it was a good balance to the savory, but if I were being nitpicky I would've liked it a HINT less sweet. This place is up there in the XLB world, and 100% worth a try. I've tried a handful of XLB spots -- Din Tai Fung, Dough Zone, Nan Xiang in NYC, and this place sticks out for sure. FYI -- The XLB here are the BIG kind, like double the size of Din Tai Fungs. There's so many different styles of XLB ranging from Nanjing style, to Shanghai, to Taiwanese style. I would say this one is a hybrid of Nanjing and Shanghai-style -- The wrapper was super thin and translucent like Nanjing's, but the filling was hefty with sweeter soup like Shanghai's. Don't forget to bite the dumplings carefully and use the little red soup bowl to salvage the soup! Or else you'll end up like the person next to me who got soup all over herself hahaha. read more

Came with a group of friends, a couple of which are regulars here, and I am happy they had a couple of vegan options that I could choose from. Of the two vegetarian/vegan options I remember seeing, I chose the steamed dumplings over the buns, and they were pretty good with a reasonably flavorful vegetable-rich filling. I think it was vegetables and tofu rather than mock meat, which I don't see as often in restaurants. I was also able to try the green onion pancake and the green beans, which were shared across the table, and they were also good. My omnivorous friends swear by the pork xiao long bao (XLB), so that's apparently the thing to get if you're not veg*n (and that's the traditional XLB, so that makes sense). The location was really busy when we were there (it was close to a holiday and a Sunday), so you may need to prepare for a wait unless you're grabbing takeout. The decor feels fairly standard for a Chinese restaurant, and it seemed fairly clean where we were sitting (near the entrance). They handled our group of six pretty well, so I would say they're decent for groups (bearing in mind the wait, of course). We're not in SF that often (because parking is a nightmare, LOL), and my husband doesn't have the patience for long waits, but I would be happy to come back here again with our friends. read more
Depending on the day expect a waitlist and a line because this restaurant has michelin star quality but not the price tag! Thoroughly enjoyed coming here! Bustling atmosphere both outside and inside the restaurant, but the service is attentive. We ordered: napa cabbage w pork dumplings, pan fried juicy pork bao, dan dan noodle house special sesame paste, and pork xiao long bao. The dumplings were delectable, very juicy and flavorful. The dough is just perfect to hold soup and doesn't break apart when picking up with your chopsticks. The soup dumpling spoons they give you to eat with are so cute and convenient. The Dan Dan noodles I would pass on and focus on their specialty dumplings because the noodle paste and flavor profile was very light, nearly refreshing...not something to say about Dan Dan noodles when it should feel savory and nutty. Visited this spot for lunch today and had a great overall experience. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful and the food came out fast! I really liked their XLBs, we ordered the beef and numb + spicy ones. I like that the dumpling itself wasn't too thick and there was alot of filling. Service was good, no complaints there. Went on a Tuesday night at 8PM and the restaurant was half-empty, which was a pleasant surprise from what my friends have warned about. + Pan Fried Pork Bao [3/5] + Beef Brisket Noodle Soup [3.5/5] + Numb & Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao [5/5] + Green Beans [4.5/5] I thought everything was okay, but nothing really blew me away. A lot of the food went cold really fast. I liked the green beans and the XLB, but I wouldn't order the pan-fried pork baos or the noodle soup again. The baos were a bit rubbery to me and didn't have enough soup or salt, and the noodle soup was good but had a LOT of noodle and not enough soup or meat for our preferences. I might come back to try other dishes but first impression wasn't nearly as good as I was told, especially not worthy of the Michelin rating IMO. read more
Updating to 5 stars since honestly this is one of my favorite restaurants. Yes it's a bit pricy and yes the wait is often long. But the dumplings are addicting!! The juicy pork baos are out of this world. Careful when you bite into them because the juices will shoot everywhere. Their chicken Xiao long bao are excellent as well and full of soup. I wish they had a numb and spicy chicken version- their numb and spicy pork is amazing but I prefer chicken! If it's not on your table, ask for their chili oil. Super flavorful. The place is always busy and lively- great energy. But also means it can sometimes feel a bit hectic. If it's not too cold out or you're fine with the just a heat lamp (which admittedly does work well), the outdoor tables are a bit more relaxing. read more

The crab and pork xlb was a fun option to try. I'd get something spicier next time. The pig ear side dish is seasoned beautifully. And the braised beef brisket noodle soup was cooked flawlessly. This place deserves the hype it gets - everything we got was delicious but the wait was not :') we came by around 5 on a Sunday night and there was already a huge line, think we waited for around 45 mins - 1 hr. If you come here, you MUST get their pan fried baos 生煎包 - these were so insane juicy that I almost choked on the juices LOL the beef noodle soup and soup dumplings are also super delicious. I've heard lots about Dumpling Home so I am glad I finally got to try it. My friend and I came here for an early Friday night dinner. There was already a little bit of a wait but not too bad since it was still before dinner rush. Cucumber salad (5/5): This was super fresh with a good amount of garlic sauce. The portion was pretty good too compared to other spots. Juicy pork bao (5/5): This was the 6 piece fried pork bao. It was perfectly crisp and juicy! Tons of soup inside. Pork and chives dumpling (4/5): The dumplings came with a soy sauce on the side. Would've liked it if they provided other sauces as well. Dan dan noodle (4/5): I love a sesame paste noodle. The noodles were a little too overdone for me though. Seemed too soft. The sauce and mince pork were flavorful. Overall, I had a great dinner. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying other items.
