They offer absolutely stunningly rare upscale options (I've had both Shark and Swordfish there, both were absolutely beyond amazing) as well as very well executed and much more usual dishes, such as simpler chicken pastas and steaks. I've been here 10+ times, and have literally never left without being in awe of the taste, presentation, and selection of the food. There is something here for everyone, and I can all but guarantee nobody who reads this will leave dissatisfied! Alexander's certainly delivers on ambiance, but, to my surprise, the service was still outstanding and the food was cooked to perfection. I had the Ahi Tuna Steak and my fiancé had the filet. We had dinner here Sunday evening over Labor Day weekend. It was my first visit to a J Alexander's in many years, and I can't wait to go back! First, the atmosphere is very nice... I've eaten at more expensive restaurants that didn't feel half as nice as J Alexanders. The layout and decor are very comfortable, with a lot of dark woods and leather seating. We kept dinner pretty simple... a fish sandwich (sole), fish tacos (haddock), salads, some wine, and a delicious beet side dish. I think the entrees were about $15 each, very reasonable. The food was delicious, and the service by Morgan was exceptional. Very busy for a Sunday evening, but very smooth operation, and minimal wait for a table. I won't go into too much detail here. I've been here lots of times, mostly from when I lived in Brookside because it was a central place to meet my JoCo friends for dinner. The layout is great, it's very warm feeling and the lights are dimmed, whoever designed the building did a great job. The bar area is also a great place to eat or just wait for your table. The food is good, nothing that is going to blow you away though. This is a chain owned by Houlihan's, so what you'd get is quality, but not anything that us spectacular. Best part about this place? This place is simply amazing. It was my last night in Kansas on a business trip, didn't have a rental car and had to find somewhere in short walking distance because of the snow. Someone recommended it as a upscale restaurant so seemed like a safe bet. The place is very warm and welcoming inside. I was greeted and seated immediately. And had no choice but to go with the Barbecue Danish baby back ribs. It was a huge plate of ribs, coleslaw and beans on the plate. The ribs were the best I've had in a long time, maybe ever. Just the right amount of sauce and cooked to perfection. And for $23 well worth the price. When I heard they had carrot cake ($7) I had to get a slice for dessert. That was also enough for two people, thought i finished it on my own. The cake had a little too much icing on it for me, but otherwise was delicious. Met friends for lunch while in the area on vacation. When you walk in, you can smell the wood fire cooking...a great precursor to what is to come. I ordered the prime rib medium rare. Not only did it come out perfectly cooked, but it was also nicely trimmed of all the extra fat that is what makes prime so tasty and tender but that you don't want to look at on your plate or eat. The smokiness made both mine and everyone else's meals so tasty. I don't normally order dessert, but since everyone on Yelp raved about the carrot cake, I relented. I'm IN! As most other reviews mentioned, you HAVE to order this for dessert, or at least take a bite of someone else's! Best carrot cake I've had in years - moist, flavorful, warm with decadent, yummy warm cream cheese frosting. Servings are big - so go hungry or be sure to ask for doggy bags! :-) One thing my husband pointed out that we appreciated - on the menu, they ask that you turn off cell phone ringers while in the restaurant. My wife and I have been going here on a regular basis ever since moving back to Kansas City 5 years ago. Comfortable food and surroundings. That ended Saturday. We have never felt more disrespected in our lives at a restaurant and this was disgraceful. Being older and because of Covid-19 and wanting to go out, we have been very careful to go to places that respect Social Distancing. Saturday that did not happen even with only a half full restaurant. We got there at 11 and were the second ones seated. Half way through our meal the idiot hostess sat 3 people right behind us. EVEN after we asked our waiter if they were doing Social Distancing and THEN he asked if we wanted to move. SERIOUSLY!! So then the manger comes over not ONCE but TWICE. The first time asks if we wanted to be moved. We were almost done with our meal....God what an idiot! Then the manager came over as we are leaving explaining how he was sorry for our experience. I told him "We are done and not coming back". "Idiot Hostess and Idiot Manager". For your lack of caring for your customers it will be your loss. OH! and let's not forget the excuse our waiter gave us. Some people ask for tables he said. We have had this waiter before. He is not only arrogant but has a constant attitude when he thinks his customer experience is going to his way. Good luck with that slick! read more

I visited this restaurant for the first time last night with my wife, and we both thought it was great. I had the filet kebobs and she had a filet w/fries. Both dishes were excellent. The meat was cooked correctly and vegetables on my kebob had a great smoky flavor. We both had ceasar salads to start and they were great too. The menu has quite the variety in prices from sandwiches on up. It seems to fall into that category above an Outback but below a Ruth's Chris. The service was good but as other have commented, we had a lot of 'em. We'll definitely go back. read more

I usually love this place but lately their management and staff need some adjustment. Tonight we drove by and notice there are maybe 2 dozen cars in the parking lot ( ton of empty spaces), go inside and see 2 couples sitting waiting for tables so figure the wait can't be that bad since we can see a lot of open tables. The girl at the hostess station says 1 hr and 45 min wait. I say you have all these open tables and only 4 people waiting. She says yes, but we have all these reservations. I get it that people make reservations and you need to keep them but your now screwing over people who didn't plan their night and just happens to have a craving. Most places have tables available for walk ins. It's only good business practice. My other issue was 2 months ago when I called to place an order for 1/2 sheet of their carrot cake the manager said well we need notice for this. I said yes, last time you said you needed 2 days and now I am giving you 5. They acted like they were being put out by us wanting to buy this for a party. Not sure what has happened with you all since the name change but things need to change or you will be losing a lot of long time customers. read more

Food and Service was great as always, but I am giving this a 32ating because they are not Covid19 compliant. No social distancting - 6ft apart. All booths and tables were used. They did not attempt to spread their guests throughout the restaurant, but instead filled each booth and table next to each other. Very dissapointed because of this. We celebrated our 48th anniversary here, but this definitely put a damper on the evening. Here on business and saw it was near my hotel and very busy. Go where the locals go. I had the prime rib with the smashed potatoes. Amazing flavor and not too fatty. Alexander's just to try the key lime pie, and everyone agrees that it is absolutely perfect, unimprovable, and superior to anything available in the Florida Keys. SERVICE: 4.5/5 The waitstaff is excellent. My only gripe is that J. Alexander's does not take reservations, which sometimes creates long wait times. VALUE: 3/5 Given my budget, J. New Year's Eve, and out of all our favorite high end restaurants in the area, we chose J. Alexander's. They may not take reservations, but they do have call ahead seating which worked great for us and we only had about a 20 minute wait since we went to an early dinner around 5pm. Kudos to the hostess station! They always do an outstanding job! This establishment was spot on during our visit! They make the best martinis here! I love how you are given a sidecar in an ice bath. And they have blue cheese olives to boot! Yum! We had a great waitress, Carrie, who made sure we had everything we needed iced tea, clean silverware etc. We split an Alex's salad to start. I had the Mahi special, which was some of the best I've had. Two nice sized filets with coleslaw and cous cous. My husband had the grilled Scottish salmon. It was cooked perfectly and he loved the orzo salad that came with it. We finished our relaxing delectable dinner with a fabulous creme brûlée. I've been coming to J Alexander's for the last 7 years and I can't believe I'm only writing a review now. From the moment you walk in to the restaurant, you feel taken care of. The service is incredible, even going so far as to open the doors for you. The wait staff is extremely knowledgeable of the menu, especially when it concerns allergens. They make the time to ask the chef if there are any further concerns. Now, I'm quite boring and I've been having the exact same meal for the last 7 years but I can tell you that it's the best meal you'll ever eat. I can also tell you that whoever I've brought to the restaurant has thoroughly enjoyed the experience as well. I frequently start with the chips and pico de gallo. Fantastic! The tortilla chips are warm and fresh, better than many Mexican restaurants I've been to! The pico de gallo is also delicious and tastes amazing the next day as well. For my entree, I usually order a salmon sandwich, which is off the menu by now. It goes to show you how far J Alexander's will go to please a customer! The salmon is always cooked perfectly and the remoulade it's served with is to die for. The shoestring fries are also amazing and crisp. It takes everything not to wipe out the whole plate in one sitting (the portions are huge!!). Last, I either finish with my all time favorite carrot cake or their scrumptious chocolate cake. Either way, you won't be disappointed in the least. The cakes are moist and rich, typically served a la mode. Never a bad experience and always so friendly. Love this place every time I go! Impromptu dinner there after a friend's party with heavy snacks left us hungry. I had crab cakes and my wife had a steak. Both were amazing! I love this place even though it isn't a local joint. The French dip sandwich with smashed potatoes is my go to and worth every penny of the $20. The carrot cake is served warm with warm cream cheese frosting and is divine. I'm not a big dessert eater bit it's too good to pass up. Had lunch with coworkers here today. We were seated in a booth at the bar. It was spacious seating for our table of four. The staff was courteous. The menu had a range of options for all price ranges. I had the burger, and it was fantastic. Went to this restaurant for my birthday. Not only did I see multiple cock roaches climbing on the walls, I was watching my server frantically running around not really knowing where she was going and looked panicked. As she should have been. Since it's an open kitchen you can see everything that happens in the back. It appeared as though the managers just yell at their staff and don't really help their staff. This server of ours looked new herself. So as a manager I would have given more guidance. Not shout at my staff at the top of my lungs making them feel uncomfortable. As far as the food, it was subpar. Definitely not worth what I paid for it. I had crab cakes that tasted like they came out of the frozen food aisle. And my fries were cold. My wife's drink took over 10 minutes to reach the table. Overall this place needs new management. I most likely not be back. Not the greatest experience. read more

What a disappointment this time. We live in Arkansas & about once a year we come here to eat. Gone are the wonderful mouthwatering croissants having been replaced by day old grilled sandwich bread. I am trying to follow low carb so instead of the 2 sides I asked for a double order of broccoli only to be given 3 florets & was told it was a double order. Our previous visit last year during covid was not as good as it had been previously, but still good. Tonight's visit was just not so. My husband ordered the french dip and although it was not cold it was not hot roast beef on the sandwich as it should have been. We have learned our lesson. One of my favorite restaurants in the metro. I really like gong here for lunch. The soup and salad choices are superb. Always great and quick service with staff always there checking on you. Always love a fine dinner at J.Alexanders! This one was just OK. My chicken didn't have too much flavor but it was ok. My daughter had the salmon which came with orzo rice! She is highly allergic to nuts but nowhere on the menu or advised by the waiter the rice contained Almonds. We returned the dish and the manager apologized but then asked it we needed a whole new fish or was it ok to serve the same one! Huh? We just said she was highly allergic to nuts... he happily said we would get a new one made but at that point she was scared to eat... anyways. I've never had a bad meal there - steaks, burgers, salads, fish. They do have specials that are often special. My service has always been good. The prices are very reasonable considering what you're getting. It's not Morton's where you can count on $75 a head for dinner before drinks. PROS: Really enjoyed the atmosphere...even when busy felt like we were at a private booth. I had the filet mingon which was huge! Most places usually serve 6 oz and this was at least 8. It was so tender and cooked perfectly. My boyfriend got the kc strip which was fattier/tougher but was also cooked perfectly and was seasoned beautifully. Had a bottle of a lovely red wine blend. Cons: not as many side choices as other steakhouses such as mushrooms & creamed spinach. Soup of the day was chili, who wants a bowl of chili before a steak? Would have preferred offerings such as bisque and no bread was served either. Overall was very good, quality steaks.
