Very disappointed in the service yesterday. As always, the waiters try to grab the food off the table all the time you are eating. But this time took the cake. I ate very little of my grilled chicken salad and took it home to finish later in the day. When I opened the box, I had someone else's half of a club sandwich. Thank you waiter, Austin L. Never again! I'm boxing my own food at the table from here on out. Food is pretty consistent, and the waite staff is too...terrible! Each time it is something different. I made two reservations for J. A's - 1 at 2:30 and 1 at 6:30 for 3, on 4 Sept. Wen we arrived at J' A's at approx. 2:15, I had the Hostess cancel the 6:30 reservation. We had a good, but very overpriced meal - at least the fresh salmon for $22.00 - it was no more that 4 or 5 ounces. Then when I arrived back home, I had an email from Open Table chastising me for being a no-show for the 6:30 reservation - this email was sent at 2:31 - 4 hrs before the reservation! I somewhat resent the accusation of being a no-show when I wasn't a no-show. And, with the small portions and over pricing, I'll be considering other fine restaurants in this area. I have always liked J. A's - the service and food were always excellent. I have eaten here dozens of times over the years, but being a senior citizen - and an Air Force veteran - I just can't justify the price-per-portion conflict. Terrible service, terrible management! The food may be good but we never got to dine because the service and management sucked. When we first stepped in after our shopping in the mall they told us it was going to take about 40 minutes and they put our name on the list and told us we will receive a text once our table was ready. We came back 20 minutes later and sat at the bar until they text us. Not only we never received any text but when we expressed our concerns they first said it was not our responsibility to txt you and then one them said she was the manager even though she was not and no one even tried to help. Not to mention 40 min at bar and we had to ask for the drink menu ourselves. The bar tender was too busy with other guests who turned out to be his brother. Hi said a bunch of bullshit to us who have been waiting so long to be asked for some drink or receive the txt. Even after the real manager came to address the situation, she failed to satisfy us. Picked up a carryout today. Everything was great and order was correct. Filet was on point. 2 dinners came with a free carrot cake.

we only went there because The Capital Grille wasn't open yet. Food was good, service,at the bar, by the bartenders was HORRIFIC. All 3 of them, and the apparent day manager, were much too busy talking to regulars, or staring at their phones to take our order, ask if we want another drink, ask how the food was, etc... the food did come out hot and quickly but it took longer for them to take our order than for the kitchen to cook the food. normally i'd speak to the management about this before posting on yelp but since the management was part of the issue, I didn't bother and the central main site for J. alexander says they are "decentralized so contact the location directly". read more

This is the worst place! We felt like we were at McDonald's playland! People who want to shove 8 little kids into a booth with the mothers and the fathers sit in a separate booth drinking wine while the kids scream endlessly should not go out to anywhere but McDonald's! Every time I eat here something goes horribly wrong. The only reason I keep going back is because of the ranch and spinach con queso. I went with friends yesterday for dinner there.. The service was fast but server wasn't the best. Wine was good and we really enjoyed it. We ordered calamari and rattlesnake pasta both of which were good but not among the best that we've had at other places. Overall, this place is a little overpriced for the kind of food that they serve with a very limited menu to select from. I would go back there probably for the bar and if somebody else is paying!! I've been going to Alexander's on and off since this location opened and it's always been a great place for consistency in service and quality of food. However, on this most recent visit I was shocked to see that the one pasta item they used to have on their menu -- the rattlesnake pasta - is no more? This was the reason I visited so many times in the past, and one of the more popular menu items. Google it and you'll find tons of individuals commenting about how great it is and trying (without success) to replicate it. What gives J. alexanders? Why in the world would you get rid of one of your longest running and most popular menu items? Update: no response is reflective of how this restaurant operates these days. NOT accommodating for groups! I have been coming to this location for almost 20 years and never have had a bad experience, always top notch food and friendly staff. Visited yesterday for a late Saturday lunch with 10 friends and from beginning to end it was less than satisfactory. I had called earlier in the week to make reservations; I knew they didn't have a huge rectangular table, but was asking to have two round ones put together. I was told that it was not possible for them to "hold tables" for a group such as ours and to just "find another restaurant" for lunch. We were set on eating here because the food is so good and martinis come with a side-car...so I came early hoping to secure some tables near each other. Was seated promptly but had to separate our party into two as we were told we could not move tables together. The initial server took the drink order of only two people and then walked away to get waters. After everyone finally received their cocktails we got a new server who was not friendly, seemed irritated (we were not high-maintenance) and asked my friend, "Are you sure you want to order a second martini?" Wow! Mind you, we are middle-aged women and this is not our first martini lunch and shopping. In addition, the bathroom was a mess with no toilet paper in the dispenser just a roll set on the floor. Approached management about all of this and got a flat, "Thanks for letting me know." I seriously hope my friend misunderstood what the server said, but I will listen to the hostess next time and find another restaurant. read more

I love this place! The food is almost always spot-on and the service is excellent. If I have one complaint, and it's an important one, is they often break the cardinal rule of bringing out the hors d'ouervres with the main entree. Is not a good look for to have a "turn & burn" approach when you're catering to a high-end clientele. Your enjoying your drink and all of a sudden you have all the food sitting in front of you at once. You expect that. At Applebee's but not here. I get the feeling they want you out of there ASAP. Shari the bartender was our tour guide as she led us through the menu and ensured we had an excellent experience, noting the specials and the care behind the specials, including the smoked salmon dip and crab cakes topped with King Crab - wow! Disappointing experience. I have dined at other J Alexanders locations and this one is not up to their usual standards. I ordered the salmon which was severely under cooked and brought it to the waitresses attention. They took it back and re-fired the same piece on the grill. It came back severely overcooked and dry. No offer for a new piece of fish and in my opinion not a very sanitary way to deal with the situation. I wasn't looking for a comp or anything but the offer never even came. As i write this my burger is a pile of hard grains that have fallen apart into a pile of crumbles while eating. Something that has never happened to me at any of the other j. Have been dining at this location of J. Alexander's for years. It is located within Somerset Collections which is an upscale mall in Troy. Having run out of my fave perfume, and Needless Markup ( Neiman Marcus) being the only retailer of this particular perfume, I thought, time to cross the border, call an old friend, and drag him through the mall with me. He was a tad late flying in from a business trip, so it gave me time to grab a pager from the restaurant and head for Neiman. There are quite a few things I like about J's. First and foremost, the staff and ambiance. Always courteous, clean attire, and seemingly in a good mood. The bar is where I like to eat because I used to be able to smoke there, and now just a habit. There are lovely booths for lovebirds, but I like the mingle of the bar. Being extremely particular of my wine, which is all I drink, I also like being served 4 different glasses to taste. I knew it would be a bottle nite, and receiving a text from my friend who has a palate for fine wine, I chose a lovely, floral, buttery white with a hint of citrus, a Santa Margherita...began chilling with my wine as my friend arrived telling me I was a sight for sore eyes. Now that's the way to start a nite. He ordered a double goose/rocks/twist and the tie came off. Comfort zone at J's, as I call it. We decided, or shall I say, he decided to skip the bar, grab a booth because it was quite loud with very hung-over people from the weekend. Our server seemed tired. Maybe hung-over too. But I don't look down my nose at any server anywhere, asked him his name, as I always do, and smiled because I knew my friend could be a snot. Broke the ice and away we went. I decided to start with the mesclun spring mix salad that had an amazing aroma of bitterness/freshness with vinagrette on the side. My friend ordered the infamous coleslaw dripping in blue cheese to complement his vodka. I was working on my second glass of wine and feeling for something lite for dinner, as far away from red meat and potato as I could get. We both decided to not ruin the fab bottle of white and order the Ahi tuna as a main. Now we're talking. It was perfect. The aroma/ taste of the wine and the utter melt of rare tuna made my palate scream "sensual food". I'm not the kind of restaurant eater that wants a plate full, I want to taste and relish. I asked the server to skip all the heavy carbs as sides and steam some vegetables, with balsamic. My friend opted for smashed, which are a staple here, and of course, his fork ended up in my mouth, from his enticing, which actually screwed up my taste buds. Not that the potatoes weren't delicious, just heavy. Another glass of wine and I knew how I wanted to end dinner. So did he. I ordered a B-52 coffee minus the whip, he ordered coffee and cointreau...and that horribly decadent carrot cake. Best I have ever had. Enticement, two mouthfuls of that warm, gooey cake, lala land. Tonight was not a good night at J. Alexander's. Got there with high hopes of a good meal. Was seated pretty quickly but waited 10 minutes before approached for drinks or apps? My expectations are to be approached with in minutes. Oh well, then our waiter came by and was a walking zombie, no emotion, no enthusiasm and clearly a poor communicator. Did not help at all with any suggestions. I ordered chips with queso as an appetizer. The chips where greasy, the queso was cold!!! Total YUK! I returned the queso and asked for more salsa, i happen to really like J Alexanders salsa, the waiter looked at me like a dog looks at his owner (looks at you with a blank stare and turns his head!) and says that he has to charge us for more salsa!!! Hmmmm- not a good start! He brought the salsa (later checked and DID NOT charge us). I'm not ordering queso ever again. I then proceeded to order a hamburger with grilled onions and sauteed mushrooms on the side . The burger comes with cheese on it! I have been ordering burgers for 40 years and NEVER order CHEESE burgers! The waiter proceeds to tell me that's how they come??? Perhaps i made a mistake? When you order a hamburger you get a cheeseburger? NOW, to give the restaurant credit, they remade me a burger with out cheese. So the waiter tells me that is how they have it on the menu. The menu says cheeseburger? I checked and he was right, BUT I ORDERED A HAMBURGER!!!!! So in this case who is right? I think i am........ J. Alexanders will be off my radar for a while. read more

I went to Triple Nickel for a birthday dinner with my friends. We had a really good time that night and the staff was very friendly. I ordered the calamari appetizer and it tasted really good. For my main course since I'm a pretty simple gal I ordered the chicken strips and fries which as you would expect really good. Superb reviews, but reality doesn't live up to the expectations. Came in here for lunch on Thursday afternoon. Server was Daniel, who spent most of his time chatting with a table across from us about mostly nonsense. We asked for a few moments to look over the menu, received well over 15 minutes. Finally makes his way around to take our order, no apology. He spent 10 of those minutes talking to other tables. It wasn't about food, no, it was about his brother. I'm sitting right next to you while you talk about this guy. Can you please just take my order? Food arrived fast. The food is extremely forgettable. Sear on their New York Strip steak (asked for medium) was borderline charred. Had a very burnt taste. Not seasoned well enough. It actually might have been seasoned properly, but the burnt charredness of the sear was overpowering. Steak came with Mac and Cheese, it was okay. I prefer Kraft. Initially it tasted pretty good, but had almost a... vinegary? aftertaste. I honestly can't pin what the aftertaste was, but I wasn't a fan. No salad, had to order it separately. They got the salad right. Just a basic garden salad. Even McDonalds can get a salad right. Steak - $29 Salad - $5 ---------- Total - $36.04 Value for your money? Not good. I don't like Outback, but you can get a better steak there for cheaper. Granite City down the street has an awesome steak for about $27 and comes with a salad. Daniel spent most of his time tending other tables, and chatting with his beloved table that he spent 75% of his time at. Those people definitely got the works, while we got the shaft. They must be the ones writing 5 star reviews. The only positive things I have to say is that the atmosphere is pretty cool. It's relaxed with kind of a upscale contemporary tone. A nice place for a quiet lunch or dinner. Dining areas are pretty private and tables for two have plenty of room. Might come off as a little try-hard for some people, but it fits where it's at (Somerset). Other than that, this place is pretty forgettable. Won't be returning. read more

J. Alexander's is good, but a little overrated I would perhaps say. My husband got a country club sandwich ? I think it was called. And I got the salmon filet. We both had sides of the orzo salad. I We did not know the orzo salad came with raisins (not noted on the menu), otherwise we would not have of requested it. I also had Alex's salad, which was beyond amazing. The server was not attentive, only checked in with us twice the whole hour and a half we were there, but was very nice. My husband had to search for someone to get dressing, since they had forgotten my ranch for my Alex's salad. My salmon filet was good, but my husband's meal was nothing special. Fries were cold. Went here last night and wasn't disappointed. I ALWAYS ask for the smoked salmon dip (which sadly isn't on the menu anymore) and they had it!!!! I LOVE it so much that I get a version of it at Mariano's. For my entree I had cilantro shrimp (no coleslaw, substituted broccoli). I enjoyed my dining experience. I called to place a carry out order and the receptionist said they don't take carry out orders over the phone, only in person. We were very dissapointed. So they expect me to come in, order it in person and wait 15-20 minutes until it's ready. No common sense at all. I have previously visited the location in West Bloomfield and decided to pop into this location for a bite since I was in the area. This was around 11 on a Sunday afternoon. It was close to open and it seemed like the staff was still getting prepared for the day. Shorty & I both decided to have burgers. I enjoyed mine, the bun in particular. I'm a big fan of J. Alexander. I've been coming to this restaurant for years. I usually get the grilled salmon with steamed broccoli. I also love the honey mustard. I used to visit at J. Alexander's in West Bloomfield and really enjoyed the experience. After I moved out of state, i would tell any who would listen about how awesome J's is: the service, the food, etc. On a trip to visit my brother (who lives outside of Detroit), I had a chance to revisit and went to the restaurant in Troy (which is actually located off of Exit 69 on Big Beaver Road - really!). My wife, daughter and I were sat at a very nice table. Unfortunately, no server came to greet us. No water, no appetizer, NOTHING. In fact, plenty of servers walked right by our table and, even after looking in our direction and making eye contact, did not bother to help us. What made it worse was when we walked out, one of the Hosti ( a J's term for the host staff) asked, "How was everything?!" in a cheerful way. This restaurant prides itself on making you feel like a guest and I felt like an intruder. My wife, an easy-going part Italian/part Irish mix, was livid; her green eyes turned red. I was rather embarrased after all the build up I gave the place. Although the Coach (manager in J's lingo) did offer an appetizer to smooth things over, it really irked me because I wanted their Rattlesnake Pasta and my wife wanted a salad (big enough for two). I will go to J's again - in West Bloomfield for sure and more than likely in Chicago but the experience in Troy was not a good one. read more
