Oak City Grill is easily one of my favorite spots in Royal Oak. It offers a little bit of everything for whatever you are looking for without being generic. For me, live music every night is a huge draw. I love the new and seasoned people they bring in to play - there is always a new favorite to discover. The food is amazing, I LOVE their lamb chops, the steak bites, crab cakes and the naan pizzas. Their chicken tenders are so so good, and that is not typically a go-to for me elsewhere. They also have vegetarian and vegan options that I just have to guess are delish! It's also a great spot for special events. I had a bridal shower at OCG and the bride and family still talk about how perfect it was (food, location, atmosphere, service). That makes me feel so good that it left such a long-lasting memory for them. I have hosted and attended birthday gathering as well and as earlier touched on, has a little something on the menu for all tastes and price points. It is also very close to Drag Queen Bingo, so it's a great meeting spot for dinner before the show or drinks after, they are great with groups! With all this place has to offer as a restaurant and live music venue, it is also a great place to just grab a drink. The options are vast and moderately priced. Be sure to try the blood orange Cosmo - so yummy! Later in the evening, it is a mainstay in the RO bar scene, so as I've said, there is something for everyone! I have also been impressed with their sense of community service and they are regular contributors to local charities and events. My biggest issue with anywhere in Royal Oak is what a PITA parking is. The parking structure 1 block to the west is a great answer to this issue (or lucky for me, it's a quick and cheap Uber ride away!). So whether you are looking for a delish dinner (even kid-friendly), a meeting spot for friends, a date night destination or somewhere to listen to live music, Oak City has you covered. read more

Most humiliating experience I've had at a bar in my entire life. I will never go back. In fact I actively hope they close doors one day. I was at the bar last night and paid for two drinks from the bartender who was a decent guy for the most part. He had topped off the beer glasses all the way which made them hard to walk back to my table with. The surface tension was unbearable but I did my best. Anyways, the one beers had a few drops fall from it and land on a lady's jeans who was sitting at the table. I'm not kidding you... a few drops. About the size of a quarter in total wet surface area. I apologized to her as obviously I didn't mean for that to happen. She then took my drinks from my table and claimed they were hers now. Already, a very wild behavior. I walked over, and apologized once more and reached for my beers that she now stole from me. Upon grabbing said beers. She ripped one from my hand, poured it on my head, and punched me in the face. I wish I could make this up. After that, the bar staff approached me and asked me to leave. So I not only gave them my money, but I was robbed and assaulted by someone and they were okay with it. Previously, I always had a very high opinion of this bar. Loved every evening I went there. I always sought out opportunities to enjoy evenings there with my friends. All this being said, I will never go back in my life. I genuinely hope they close doors one day because this was one of the most mismanaged altercations I've ever seen at a bar. I talked to the police about pressing charges but there was no one I could trust to have my back at the bar after they elected to kick me out. Also, no cameras to turn to into a legal matter. Anyways, I'm not really someone who likes to escalate things at all so I'm just letting it go moving forward. That being said, I hope this bar closes down. Just another Royal oak bar that doesn't deserve its location. This experience was INSANE. If you going out for drinks, please try to go somewhere else and do not feel bad if this bar looks slow. First and foremost, our server was a doll. But this is was honestly the absolute worst food I've had in a long time. I ordered the lemon chicken, tasted like high school lunchroom food. The calamari was full of oil and def was frozen previously. And the flat bread looked like a dollar store frozen kid pizza on a piece of pita. I honestly have no idea how this place is still open. Probably the live music. Come here for a drink and watch the music for sure. But you're better off making buttered noodles for yourself at home first. Happened to stop in during Arts, Beats, and Eats with my 6 year old daughter. Although it was a BEAUTIFUL day, the sun was getting to her a lil bit, and she needed to eat while sitting and resting. Upon entering, there was a sign that read to seat yourself, inside or out. There was a full complimentary water station, and I observed many people coming in just to use the restroom. Staff were extremely friendly and service was fast. I've never heard of this establishment before, but I will DEFINITELY be coming back...and will bring friends. Oak City Grille, THANK YOU! Attending large events like this causes anxiety in many different people for many different reasons. OCG is a regular spot for me and has been for years, especially during the colder months and the dreary gray days. There is something so London pub about them that brings me great joy. Maybe it is the dark woods and draft beer choices, the whiskeys behind the bar. But I think the biggest reason is the menu. Sometimes a wide variety means that everything is fine and nothing is great, but OCG does everything wonderfully. Most recently I was here with some auditors for dinner. They were not local but we're staying down in the area, so I thought it would be great for them to try some deliciousness. Of course one of the benefits of having a company expense account is that we can maybe splurge on things that we don't always might risk trying. We started with drinks of course, and our waitress was nothing short of spectacular wrangling our wide variety of orders and getting it to us quickly. Even more spectacular was she handled our table of 8 like it was a easy breezy. We started with appetizers: crab cakes, calamari, roasted red peppers, and sliced sirloin. Moving on from that we had our main course. By then I was on my third glass of wine and my notes were less copious and detailed. I know a naan pizza was involved, a burger, ravioli, chicken Marsala. There were also a few other of the heartier entrees ordered and shared. Every single meal was delicious and every single drink perfect. We came to see a musician friend perform and he was great. We also saw a bit of the act that followed him who was also very good, so I suspect they draw a lot of good music acts. I didn't look at the menu before we went - I expected typical bar food, but this was definitely a step above that. My wife and I shared a Caesar salad (huge!) and some soft pretzel sticks - they were yummy and it was more than enough food. Others at the table had tacos, a chicken sandwich and lemon chicken and everyone really enjoyed their food. We'll definitely be back...for the music AND the food! read more

Delightfully, surprisingly, wonderful! Lightly attended at 7 PM on a Friday, little did I know how popular this venue is. The calamari, salads, and other fare were quite, quite nicely done. And we stayed around long enough for the crowd to start to gather for a really, really top-notch live music performance. Watchtower was epically well done! Service was great. After years of anticipation, the experience was a let down. I read other reviews saying this has been a recent trend so hopefully they can course correct but the food and cocktails were very "meh". Old Fashioned was disappointing, basically cherry flavored whiskey, next time I'll just order on the rocks. The salmon was overcooked and fish was 75% plain rice. The Lemon Chicken was soggy and again 75% rice. The vegetable side was just unseasoned steamed broccoli or asparagus, a little pepper would've gone a ways. Uninspiring food unfortunately. Spinach Artichoke dip was a stand out for us, the pita chips were great. Service was very good as well. So I hope when we go back next time they have the food back to the expectations and previous glowing reviews. read more

We had a very lovely dinner here one weekend not too long ago. I really think they're underrated. Servers seem stretched a little thin but ours did a great job. We ate here on a busy Friday night. I think everyone was out looking for a place to eat since it was a beautiful night. We got lucky and spotted an open 2 top and the sign said 'seat yourself', so we did! Our table was right under an overhang, partly in / partly out, so it was perfect. Also great for people watching since we had people strolling by as we ate. I ordered the red trout, my bf got a burger. I loved mine, I asked to substitute a side salad for the rice (which I usually don't like) and they did. My fish was cooked really well and had nice flavors with the lemon and capers. My bf's burger seemed a bit rare to me, he ordered it medium, but it was pretty red inside, so he ate the edges and left the middle. I also had a cucumber collins which was too delicious, requiring me to have a 2nd one. Cucumber vodka, simple syrup, soda, lime, mint and bitters. Yum. I'd say the only thing I struggled with was our seating. The chairs were too far from the table and couldn't be pulled up any closer requiring me to lean over to eat. They are also metal chairs which don't work well with my skinny butt. Service was a bit slow, but I know all the restaurants are struggling, so no knock there. read more

They were overly charred so it was all I could taste almost rendering them inedible. Also, the Tostito looking chips just made the whole thing even sillier. I was just stopping in for a drink so this review will be short. They had a pub crawl going on and it was difficult to find somewhere to grab a drink. This place came recommended. I was surprised to see live entertainment on a sat at 3:30. But they had a great singer there. It was a nice touch and he was very good. The place was moderately busy. But I was able to sit at the bar. They didn't have a huge variety of beers, but I ordered an IPA. I didn't get any food it was one and done while waiting for friends. Come here for the live music and bar. Not the food. I came here back in November with some coworkers after a workshop, so there were 14 of us. Understandably, it's tough to serve a huge party but there was something wrong or missed with nearly everyone's food. I ended up completely not getting my order until everyone else was nearly finished. The food wasn't anything to write home about. I didn't expect much for mine since I don't eat meat, but coworkers also didn't seem impressed with what they ordered either. Near the end of dinner, bar hoppers started to trickle in. This definitely looks like a place locals like to hang out at. The live music was decent and besides the mediocre food, everyone seemed to have a good time. MEAT MARKET. We grabbed the last two seats at the bar, having a drink before the show. Two drinks and two beers were $40. This is a place for singles. It was packed shortly after we walked in about 630pm on a Saturday night. The bartenders were nice but not a place for a special order. I asked for a spicy cocktail. They said none was on the menu. Another bartender took our second order. I asked if she could make a spicy margarita with lime juice and not mix so it's not very sweet. She said they have lime juice in a bottle but it's not sweetened and they use Tabasco to spice it up. I said that couldn't be very good but she said they do it all the time. I agreed to try it. Awful. Too sweet, lime juice was surely sweetened. I couldn't taste any tequila, and you cannot put vinegar based heat in a drink like that. What's hot at all vinegar throws off the flavor. She offered to take it back if I didn't like it. I took her up on it after trying it. Ordered a beer. Small draft list but good. They said that they've been packed every night. Popular place. Drinks are not cheap or even reasonable. Best non sweet is something straight or a martini here. Guy next to us said the live music is great. We had to leave for the show. Maybe next time. read more

Went to the Oak City Grille for an early dinner yesterday about 4:45 PM. the place was deserted, not busy at all, so I decided to eat dinner at the bar. A woman named Martha was my server. You'd think because they weren't busy at all that the service would be very good. Wrong.‼‼ Was tardy and lackadaisical during my whole meal. And she never once asked how my meal was, which, by the way, was mediocre at best. Just a very poor dining experience for the amount of money I spent and triggered this review. This was a fun place to go out on a Saturday night. The wait staff seemed very friendly. It was a nice, eclectic crowd. I liked the fun oaky decor and the large windows perfect for people watching. After a certain hour on the weekend there is live entertainment. A gentleman with a guitar was singing familiar popular 70's/ 80's/ 90's tunes. It was a high energy fun atmosphere. I arrived at 7:18 and got a drink, which was good. I liked the variety of cocktails and the great beer choices. I was in a group that arrived shortly after. I ordered the spinach salad. It did not arrive until 8:55. When it did arrive, it was so small, it looked like a tiny side salad. Granted, it was very, very delicious, and I enjoyed it, my friend's side salad was twice the size, and the description never indicated that it was a side, it was suppose to be a dinner/ lunch size salad. It was so noticeably small that many at the table commented on the size, and wondered why I ate a small salad for dinner. It was gone in ten minutes. Then, we did not get the bill and leave until almost 10:00. While I did have a great time here, I wondered what was taking so long. So I basically spent three hours with one beer and one tiny salad. This place is great. Best live music in Royal Oak. The staff is hard working, delightful, and just awesome people. They want you to enjoy your experience here. The food is always delicious and the bartenders make sure your drinks are replenished, quickly. Lots of good looking people come here and it's known for local celebrities if that's your thing. The parking in Royal Oak is the only downfall and it really has nothing to do with this establishment. The only issue that people have is they don't offer a karaoke night. Oak City Grille is our go to spot for grabbing a quick cocktail when were are traipsing around RO. It's located in a central area and we've always had luck grabbing a seat at the bar or finding a table. During the warm weather, they also have outside seating. I don't recall if I've ever had their food, but there drinks are great. I really like the consistency of live performers at Oak City. They have a fantastic rotation of local musicians to enjoy. They have an interesting set up for a tiny stage area, behind the bar, to accommodate performances. You never know who you're to see performing and I just really enjoy listening to live music. The service is fantastic and the lemon drop martinis....are the BOMB! If you haven't found your way to Oak City Grille, you are missing out. read more
