When I first started school at Texas Tech, I was looking for a good coffee shop to study and spend my time at. For a while, whenever I asked for recommendations, I was always told J&B Coffee. I went there for the first time in 2022 believing they would be the coffee that saved me and truly show me what West Texas coffee roasters and brewers have to offer. Oh buddy, I was wrong. I want to start by saying the atmosphere of J&B is incredible. Inside feels like a time capsule to the early 2000s coffee craze with their beverage menu written on a chalkboard, the brick and wood decor, the massive windows bringing natural light into the building, and the space being large and welcoming. There are a few areas to choose from at J&B which include the busy and social front space, the back room for focus and quiet, the upstairs conference room for group meetings, and the outdoor wrap around seating that is typically shaded for a nice afternoon chat. The staff is always very friendly especially with how slammed J&B seems to be on a frequent basis with a line usually reaching the door. Their aesthetic is extremely welcoming. It is like a mistrusting hug. A false sense of comfort before you actually get your beverages. Regardless of getting an espresso based beverage hot or iced, I think it is the worst coffee in Lubbock. I have gotten grounds in my coffee, burnt beans, and straight up unfinishable beverages from J&B, and it is disappointing every time. Last time I went, I tried the Sopapilla Latte which was their September Cause Drink featuring horchata powder, honey, and cinnamon, and it just did not do it for me again. My girlfriend and I went back to see if anything had improved, but our verdict remained the same which was not good. I was an officer in an organization at Tech and during our meetings one officer always suggested J&B. We would go biweekly and their beverages became so unbearable to me that I started exclusively ordering London Fogs to avoid espresso. They started recognizing me for ordering London Fogs frequently. Their pastries are usually pretty good. I have had banana nut bread and blueberry muffins from there that are excellent. They also have a kitchen where they serve sandwiches and other items that people seem to enjoy. I have not tried a meal there. My girlfriend told me she had to stop going to J&B because the smell was so putrid to her. She described it as a coffee smell that was not aromatic and warm but comparable to a coffee left on the counter with creamer in it until it reaches its lukewarm state of tragic existence. You could leave J&B in the evening and sometimes the glorious smell of cow dookie blowing in the wind like Bob Dylan would be comparable to being inside. It is like visiting that one buddy who swears he is not addicted to the broccoli and you throw your clothes in the washer and pray the smell leaves your cotton tees. I do like that they are open pretty late compared to the other heavy hitters in Lubbock. I was working on my graduate thesis and needed to get out of the house after many hours at the library, so I opted for J&B. It worked for that experience, but I ordered a tea. Another plus is their massive cork bulletin board which makes J&B a perfect hub for finding events in the community, clubs and organizations for the hoards of college kids stepping inside every week, and more like piano lessons or people needing someone to join a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. They also host a lot of events from live music to trivia and comedy shows which is also pretty awesome. After this last visit, I finished my latte and found remaining grounds in my coffee. It was disappointing because their space deserves love for being a perfect hub of productivity, but they do not have the product to back it up. A lot of people I know do not go to J&B as their personal choice. Someone else always suggests it for a group project or meeting, and then you find out they only come for the J&B Arnold Palmer which leaves you choosing between the most mediocre espresso drink of your life. A triple bogey. I want to love J&B more, I really do, but it continues to haunt the residents of Lubbock and the students of Texas Tech. It welcomes you with a beautiful atmosphere then reveals itself to be a heel with its evil all along coffee. A wolf in sheep's clothing. A wolf in an apron, maybe? Nice barista (guy with tattoos and mustache)! I got the red raider which wasn't my favorite. Didn't have a lot of flavor and the coffee taste itself isn't there. Lots of steamed dairy flavor. It's more expensive compared to other coffee shops near by and not nearly as good. It is a huge space though. This is such a cozy local coffee shop. Service is fast and almost always friendly. The food quality depends on what you order - I would recommend the pastries over the oatmeal or sandwiches. There is a bakery across the street, so I would recommend grabbing your food there instead. Out of all of the coffee shops in town, I'd recommend using this one if you're studying or working on your laptop. Check out the back room if all of the tables in the main area are full. Their hot chocolate, teas, and regular lattes (add syrup if desired) are delicious. The signature lattes are really sweet and are not my favorite drinks on the menu. Our first impression of Lubbock was visiting J&B Coffee Co. and wow were we ever disappointed!! The whole coffee shop vibe is cute but overrun with students who are taking an entire table to themselves. They appeared to have bought one tiny drink to justify hanging out all day. Even though there is signage on the door that says, NO OUTSIDE FOOD & DRINKs, everyone in there was openly and obviously enjoying their own outside snacks & drinks. There was nowhere for people like us to sit. We told the girl who was taking our order that we were from out of town and would like to try one of their most popular drinks. Her attitude was zero, didn't want to be there, she could have cared less if we bought anything. We ordered two frappe smoothies for $18.00 -- they were okay. We found two chairs in the corner. The table top was dirty and sticky, I asked the same girl if she could wipe the table down. Even though they were not busy, she made us wait. This was our only moment to take a break so we assumed that since other people were leisurely eating snacks from outside that it was okay for us to do it too. We had one donut to share between the two of us and before we broke it in half, she hastily came over to us with a rude attitude and explained that we couldn't have outside food, then asked us to leave. It was very embarrassing. We didn't argue the fact that everybody had drinks and food from outside the coffee shop but certainly felt targeted. Exactly why, I would only be guessing. My first thought was to write a YELP review about our experience. I was very disappointed to see that this business is not claimed on Yelp and that the owner probably has no idea that this is happening in their coffee shop. Probably the coziest coffee shop in Lubbock. The employees have always been friendly and made me feel welcome. The coffee is nothing to write home about, about its not bad. I never get drinks with sweeteners in them, but the last time I went I tried the Raider latte drink (forgot the exact name) with half the sweetener and it was quite good and appropriately strong for an espresso drink of 16oz. I also got what ended up being a perfectly good sandwich for the price. Our Airbnb was just a few blocks away, so this became our go-to breakfast spot while in Lubbock. We ordered online, and pickup was super easy. I got a brown butter toffee latte both times, and it was delish- not too sweet. I got a breakfast sandwich with sausage both days, as well. I got a wheat English muffin the first day, and it was too small for the meat and egg, the second day I got an everything bagel and it was great. This coffee shop is one of best places (IMO) in Lubbock. I know a lot of people here are saying how there are a lot of college students here, but it's because it's such a good spot to study. Yes, it can get crowded, but again, it's just because this place is popular. And even with that said, they do a have a lot of places to sit, it may not be a table like you want, but they have places to sit in the front of the cafe, the back, and even an upstairs where its quiet if you have a party of 4 or more. The "vibes" of the place is pretty neat, there's a lot of natural sunlight in the front, if that's what you like, and when I go, which is pretty often, the employees are very helpful and kind. The only reason I can't give it a full 5 stars is because the beverages and food are kind of expensive for the quality presented. That and the tables are often more than not, sticky and uncleaned. read more

Came here on Sunday late morning to grab a drink. I ordered a matcha latte. It was OK. I think they added sugar to it and I don't really feel like thats necessary. They're extremely popular. The whole place was filled with college students and it was really busy. Took about 15 min or so to get my drink which is fine. They were working their butts off. This isn't a third wave coffee shop, it's more like a local version of Starbucks so if you're into that this will be for you. I wasn't impressed but I give them points for being kind and having great hours. This would definitely be my last choice of spots to go. I prefer a more specialized experience where I can choose the origin of coffee I want and the drinks aren't overly sweet. I can get that with third wave shops. read more

Great coffee place. It does get very crowded, but we went in the early afternoon and were able to find a place to sit. They also get their coffee from a Amarillo roaster (Evocation Coffee). We love seeing places support their fellow Texans. I had the white mocha which tasted great, but I would of liked it to be served in a mug, instead of a to-go cup. However, I think they serve most of their drinks like that for the convenience of the local college students. The hubby had an espresso, which he enjoyed. We also had the blueberry scone and apple cinnamon scone. The scones were very good, not dried out or overly sweet. Great place for a quick cup of coffee. read more

We haven't traveled to Lubbock in over 10 years and this place was a welcome sight! Not only welcoming decor but also welcome staff! I assume they were busy before we arrived because a couple of them looked tired but we still got smiles from them! The breakfast sandwiches we ordered (to go) were delicious and the coffee be beverages were rich and flavourful. Took a visit to Jane because he while in town in Lubbock. I actually drove about 10 minutes to this location because the reviews look so great. I was definitely not let down! The spot it's self is a pretty large coffee shop with plenty of seating, and nice areas for studying, reading, or just chatting with friends. I noticed there were a lot of college students here, but they were all working or busy doing stuff on their computer There are so many options on the menu! From all your regular coffee drinks to an endless list of teas (including bottomless teas), Plus they had a ton of yummy breakfast food and baked goods! I had the breakfast sandwich on a croissant and it was freaking amazing. The staff is also super kind, and chatted it up with me as I was ordering. I ordered a handful of drinks, a few baked goods, and a breakfast sandwich, and all of it was in my hands in a matter of minutes! A great spot to come sit down, or to take to go! Besides the tables & floors being dirty, customer service is always rude. I had a tea with me and was told I couldn't bring outside food or drink into the shop. It's just a cup of tea... it's not that serious. I was almost finished with it and was going to order a coffee right after. No other coffee shop I've been to has done this. Also, when asked for cream and sugar we were told we had to add it ourselves at the bar? So what exactly am I tipping and paying for if i'm making my own coffee? I LOVE THIS PLACE!! J&B has become one of my favorite cafes in Lubbock! I've tried out a few but this one is by far the best in terms of atmosphere, space, quality of food/drink, as well as distance from campus since I usually grab some coffee and a snack before heading to class. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you are on the go as wait times can be a bit long, but they do have a mobile order option online. I usually order from my apartment before I leave and it is ready for pick up by the time I get there. My personal favorites/recommendations are the Carmel Cowboy and the Vietnamese Iced Coffee I also love all of their freshly baked pastries and breakfast sandwiches. The turkey melt is one that I get a lot and my boyfriend enjoys their sausage croissant sandwich. The staff is also always super sweet!
