Much to my surprise, getting something as simple as a key replaced can be much trickier than expected. Since I didn't want to put my business towards a major hardware chain such as "Home Depot" & "Lowe's" or a mega retailer like "Walmart", I decided to use the Yelp app and came across "J & J Locksmiths". This is one of those old-school places that looks like its been around for decades. And that it has being one of Sacramento's top locksmiths dating back to 1956. Located directly on Fulton Ave. and about a mile south of Business 80 (Capital City Freeway), the exterior has quite that vintage look to it. The business name is shown by a sign that displays it in yellow block letters with a fairly sizable parking lot. Keep in mind that their store is only opened during the week; Monday through Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm and closed on the weekends. However, if in the event you're in an emergency, they do offer 24/7 emergency road service. Once inside, you will notice an absolutely massive amount of keys inside of this place. Here, you can get many purposes of keys duplicated which includes residential, commercial, safe and automotive lock services (with all of the major vehicle manufacturers). Some of the really cool features of this place is their collection of fireproof safes with a wide variety of sizes and styles. Since I only needed a simple mailbox key to be duplicated, I went in during the afternoon of Tuesday 1/8/2025 at around 4:00pm. There was only one employee working as I did not see any other customers inside. I simply asked him to make two copies of my mailbox keys and he was done in less than 2 minutes. Total price was only $3/ea + tax and came out to about $6 and some change. Not to mention, the employee was friendly, knowledgeable, and had me in and out of there in no time. From the moment I called, the friendliness of the staff stood out. The woman who answered the phone was super nice, and the in-person service was just as pleasant. Oh My God!!!! I can't say enough about this company!! I am so happy that I went to their location after having no luck in the previous two businesses that I attempted to find. The key fab to my Lexus wasn't working and Lexus wanted over $300 to replace it. j &J told me what the problem was with my key fab and fixed it for me. The save me $295! If I could give J&J Locksmiths 10 stars I would. This morning I brought in a Schlage front door handset that had two stripped screw threads on the mounting bracket. The locksmith who works in the store took a look at it and said, "Let me see what I can do". 10 minutes later he returns with the mounting bracket re-threaded and tightly fastened with longer and larger self-taping screws which are NEVER going to come loose. Wow! For a mere $20 repair charge, I saved the $200 it would have cost me to buy a new handset and lock assembly. No more wobbly front door handle! J&J has come through for me so many times when hardware stores and other locksmiths have failed. These guys are the real deal and I appreciate their knowledge, skill and can do attitude. This is the only locksmith I will go to. They have fixed everything from my car keys (saved me a ton of money not going to the dealership), house keys, home safe, and even fixed my screen door when it didn't hang correctly. In short I was recommended to this company by the guys working Nissan parts on Auburn Blvd. I had two locked storage boxes in the bed of my truck ( factory accessories) I ask if I could get an estimate to open or drill out the lock and before I knew it, the gentleman was in the back of my truck tried a couple of times with my key then did a Donzi type strike at the lock and it opened...the second one was a bit more involved but he got it opened... I was at the point of either completely cutting around the locs to remove them, buy new boxes.. I was referred to J & J Locksmiths from a mobile locksmith as the place to go if I was looking for a brick and mortar shop. The key blade for my Ducati key fob broke and it took a while for me to find a place that would re-cut a Ducati key blade, but it was in Florida. I didn't want to send my key fob in the mail since I have heard it would be really costly to replace if it got lost in the mail. I got the blade back but then had to get the broken piece of the blade out and get the new blade in. I called around to a few places and told that they couldn't do it, not sure they could, and the one that said he would try would charge over a hundred bucks since he was a mobile business. He did refer me to J & J and sure enough, took one look at the key blade and fob - said it would be easy, took less than five minutes, and was only going to charge a very nominal fee. I paid them four times what they were asking since I was so happy and it is the holidays! I know where to go if I ever need help with keys or locks! read more

I am glad I did not write a review after the first time I came here! We bought a used car and my mechanic recommended I go here to get new keys made, because old ones were flimsy. I got two new keys Cut. I could not test it right away because the car was in the shop. When I got to the car the key would not start the ignition. But it did bend in the ignition, which was why I was going to write a bad review. For them giving me another flimsy key to replace it when I already had. we ended up having to put a new ignition in the car, and I had the two flimsy keys in my pocket with the intent to go back and return them for a refund. Though I have new ignition keys now, I still need copy for the doors. I went to Emighs, and after three tries we decided to give up. He just couldn't get the key cut to open all the doors. So I shuffled back to J&J. After causing some confusion because I had them cut the wrong key, The older gentleman there went and found the perfect blank for my car. He cut it, in the open and close my doors it would not go into the lock for the truck. He went back-and-forth several times until he perfected it. I bought three replacement keys. By the way it was 1:05 PM, if they close at one on Saturdays. I'll keys are working now! read more

J&J Locksmith is absolutely terrific. He was not only on time but early. He was professional and knew exactly what he was doing. He was able to fix our lock (broken by another locksmith, see below) and charged an extremely fair price with was only a fraction of what the locksmith below was going to charge us. See below: We had a key break in our lock and my husband called a different locksmith. They were terrible. They took 90 minutes to then tell us they didn't have the parts to fix it. They broke a portion of the lock. They charged $150 for this "service" and said it would be another $350 to repair what they broke when all we needed was a broken key out of the lock. read more

So I needed a programmable key fob programmed. I called right before they closed and they told me if it wasn't an emergency, to call in the morning before I came in so I wouldn't have to wait. The next morning, they said to head on in. That respected my time. They charge a flat $50 to do the programming, which is $40 cheaper than I was quoted elsewhere. I didn't have to leave my car for the day, was done in less than 45 minutes, and the key works. I really appreciate people who value my time and don't overcharge. And they do a great job. read more

The are amazing Many years ago I called them to come help me when I lost my house keys. They were fast and polite. Some of the best customer service I've encountered. Then recently i broke my key in the door of my car (old car no fob) and when I called they gave me a slot someone had just cancelled for. He pulled up within 10 minutes and I had a new key within 20 minutes of calling them. Still great customer service after more than a decade. I wrote a long review, but it boils down to this- if you don't know something, say "I don't know". They guy who helped me was very adamant that my car door was having electrical issues in a celluloid in the lock mechanism which made my key fob not work. What he should have said was "I'm not sure why it isn't working, but the key has been programmed". Instead, I ran back and forth and the issue that I finally found was that the trunk latch was loose. Probably don't try to diagnose car issues. I really should have just gone to the dealership. read more
