A whole-in-the-wall barbecue place was well worth the stop. My family and I stopped for lunch and we were so pleasantly surprised. I got the full rack of ribs and they were so tasty and fall-off-the-bone cooked. All the entrees came with multiple sides and the portions were BIG. They were very generous with the amount of food especially for the price. It was beyond reasonable, especially the lunch menu prices. Staff was super friendly and consistently checked in on us. DO NOT COME HERE ON FATHER'S DAY. While my previous review, I gave a bad review because the food was bad, today the food was actually good! Got some steaks. Everyone who got those liked. As for the other food... not so much. And a lot of food was unavailable and told was unavailable like an hour later. And the food took over an hour. As for the ambiance... freezing. A member of our party requested for the air to possible be turned down and they would not. The air was blowing napkins off our laps. Other people had to get sweaters from their cars. Sad. My father liked the food but he felt bad for choosing this on Father's Day. Can't recommend this place for Father's Day. Feel bad to say this but we felt pretty bad about how it went. We live between 2 J&R locations: Rocky Point & Calverton. CALVERTON blows other location AWAY on all counts! Tremendous dining area with warm country cabin feel, very large bar area with tons of TVs to watch games, and an inviting outdoor patio area as well. The tremendous dining room was packed to capacity. The hostess was so warm and inviting and said would you like to eat by the bar we have some nice tables there, by some nice people. It was just my husband & I, we were happy for table anywhere. Octoberfest menu was still in play in early November, and the specials board was packed. Oh an also, prix fixe menu. Soooo many choices! The service and the food are very good. Generous portions at amazing price point. Our server was so nice, dare i say joyful? Yes. She was someone you would want to be instantly friends with if you met in appropriate circumstance. We both loved our meals. I got a seafood platter, my husband got marinaded steak. The restaurant's claim to fame was their 72oz steak challenge, which a few of my friends attempted and failed miserably. Lol The other reason we loved the restaurant was their $10.99 marinated 24oz sirloin steak. Boy! For poor college kids, that was a gift from the heavens. A well seasoned massive steak grilled to a perfectly tender medium rare always satisfied our appetites. Unfortunately, at this Calverton location, that same steak no longer exists. Instead, in its place is a thin puny piece of meat that lacks flavor and tenderness. I also expected the price to go up, but 3x the price for 2/3 of the original size and nowhere near the quality? No thanks! On the other hand, their 24oz marinated cowboy steak for $34 was quite delicious. This nicely seasoned piece of meat also comes with a smoky touch of the grill. Cooked to a hot pink, I would pay this price happily again for this steak. Other additional items we had included a great shrimp cocktail as part of a prix fixe. The chili was too salty (skip cheese) and the lobster bisque tasted like nothing I expected (flavorful though). Mushrooms and sweet potato fries were both enjoyable. Lastly, garlic bread was quite good, especially dipped into the accompanying hot tomato sauce. To be honest, I was almost ready to give up on this restaurant. My last visit with a group of friends, maybe two years ago, was really terrible. Most of the food then was not satisfactory. Can't remember the details except to avoid the NE clam chowder and fried onion rings. Thankfully, they rebounded. My advice to you is that come here with the mindset of "you get what you pay for." This is not a place serving prime dry-aged steaks that cost an arm and a leg. If you find a few items you like, stick with them, and you'll enjoy a decent meal at a fantastic price. Yeee Haawww !!! Wow, stopped in after adventuring through a haunted house nearby. When we arrived, friendly staff greeted us, there was no line and we were seated quickly. J&R's is casual, and at the time we were eating, was moderately quiet. They have a very diverse menu, and I decided to go with the fixed price New York steak ($33) which came with an appetizer, entrée, two sides, and dessert. For my appetizer opted for the cocktail shrimp which were four large shrimp that were fresh and tasty. My steak came out medium rare, which is what I asked for perfectly done and was quite delicious. I ordered garlic mash, but it came with homestyle fries, which was also good. Unfortunately, I was full , as the amount of food is very generous and had to take home my delicious apple strudel. We absolutely love this steakhouse! We've been coming here for years and the best part is consistency: delicious food, reasonable prices and the best coffee in town. Two people can get soup to nuts for $25 on top of all that, the service is great. We especially love Maria, who not only is an exceptional server but she does all the beautiful handwriting on the chalkboards so we all can keep on top of the wonderful specials of both food and drinks. My MIL brought us here after a nice day at her community pool. We stopped by the cute little gift shop next door and bought some trinkets before getting a table. We were cheerfully greeted by the host and given a table straight away. It looks like a family-style restaurant with two other locations. We sat in the main dining room which is pretty big. They gave us sourvneir "100 dollar bill" menus. They also have their specials written on the expanse of the wall. Our server came by and took our drink orders. He seemed kind of frazzled right off the bat. He may have been the only actual server and service didn't really seem too organized. We immediately regretted not ordering our apps with our drinks because the drinks took forever to arrive. I had their watermelon rita and it was not my cup of tea. It was very sweet and very weak. We ordered the garlic bread for the table but it was not that great. We could hardly taste the garlic and it was soooo bland. We ordered my kiddo some BBQ ribs and steak fries from the kids menu and she loved it, almost finishing her entire plate, and it was a big portion. The meat fell off the bone. Unfortunately, the rest of our food could not hold a candle to the kids menu. We all ordered "price fixe" options. Each option came with an app, soup or salad, a side, and a dessert. Grub Rundown: Every table gets some really crisp pickles and a simple pasta salad. As regular shmegular as those items are, I probably enjoyed eating them the most out of everything I ordered. Baked clams - I chose this for my app. It was giving diner menu, circa 1986. The stuffing was all breading and it was mush. Not a good mouth feel IMO. They need to update that dish big time. Lobster bisque - NOT lobster bisque...more like imitation seafood bisque. I knew as soon as it hit the table that they use imitation crab or something along those lines. The menu is deceiving. It says it's made with lobster but does not specify there is imitation seafood in it. It smelled and tasted like kani, and the little bright red pieces of "meat" were a dead giveaway. The fact that no one of the staff could tell me what was in the soup or confirm that it was imitation crab was alarming. I asked for the salad instead which was a simple house salad but tasted 10X better than the soup, for my taste, anyway. Porterhouse - I ordered this main with a creamed spinach side. The steak was cooked to temp very well, unfortunately, it was also bland. I was given the option of having it marinated in a teriyaki but if I'm spending 35 bucks on a porterhouse, it shouldn't need any additional flavor. Apparently, J&R's needed it. It needed salt in a big way, or at least to be basted in salted butter. They did bare minimum with the prep. I event tried to salvage it with the help of their house brand steak sauce but that tasted like cocktail sauce so I left it alone. I just packed up whta I didn't eat and hopefully I can spruce up the steak and make a wedge out of the leftovers. Hubby had the same issue with his steak kebabs. They were lacking flavor of any kind and needed seasoning badly. My MIL started with mozzarella sticks and she had their seafood combo with the clams, salmon and shrimp. She didn't finish her meal either. I got the apple pie for dessert and paid the upcharge for it to be served "a la mode". The pie likely not made in house and if it is, they use canned filling. It was served warm and my kid ate some of it but not much so that says a lot. Both hubby and the MIL had rice pudding. It was too sweet for my liking. We had several issues while dining. Our plates were not cleared. We were at a table for four and there were four of us, so having our mains delivered while also having the empty plates from our apps in the way was annoying. It happened a couple of times. There are so many staff members walking around that you would think they would be operating in a more organized fashion. We waited for a long time for our drinks and food. My husband's mother's iced tea and our kids juice was served without ice so we had to ask for it and the serv dropped the first cup of ice which wasn't a big deal because mistakes happen, but he just seemed to be flustered by it, constantly saying out loud thta it wasn't a big deal, it was only ice. I'm not sure what was going on. The table behind us had issues with their emails as well. I even saw another table just finish eating their shrimp cocktail when someone brought out another two orders. They even laughed about it. There were enough people and decent looking reviews to suggest this would be a nice place to eat but I'm not convinced. Maybe we came on an off night. I don't know, but so many things made the meal a not-so-pleasant one. When we were done, however, the very nice lady that greeted us when we arrived took plenty of pictures of us at our request. I have been a patron here at least 10 times in the last 4 years. I can no longer keep quiet about something that's very upsetting to me. This Restaurant persists in playing FOX NEWS at the bar. I think this is 100% wrong. We go out to dinner to have fun and relax not listen to people spouting PROPAGANDA! If they insist on keeping the News on at least put a middle of the road station on like CNN. FOX News is offensive to me for a multitude of reasons, but mainly because they LIE non-stop about EVERYTHING. The food was mediocre. My husband liked his steak. My salmon was advertised as GRILLED. I have been to J.R.'s about 4 times and it just keeps on impressing me each time. If you want a great steak dinner for a great price, this is the place to be. Tonight we were privileged to have an amazing waitress naked Thanuja, who I called "T". T was just amazing in every sense of the word. He personality was really electric and she knew how to have fun with all of us at the table. T took out drink order right away and bright them to the table and then we proceeded to order. She made some great suggestions and talked me into getting the Cowboy, which is a huge 24oz (I think) marinate ribeye. Youza! (Pronounced Yow-za) Tonight we had the coconut shrimp, which are always tasty and delicious, the marinated filet mignon which was delicious and tender, two cowboy steaks and a surf and turf. Some of the dinners were on the prix fix. This means that it comes with an appetizer, salad, dinner, side and dessert all for about the same price for the dinner. Some of the apps we got were the coconut shrimp, crunchy with a nice chutney, the baked clams, stuffed were nice and moist, salads generous and the rice pudding...oh boy! We came here fir dinner because my mom loves this place. They also have a location in Rocky Point, but my mom swears this one is better. When you walk in they have a fairly large bar to the right and a large 'specials' board by the hostess station. They have started their Octobersfest menu already when we went in at the end of august. We were sat promptly and brought a macaroni salad dish topped with 2 pickle halves (they served this instead of bread, it was a nice change of the norm) They have a "pre fixe" menu which changes daily. And on Friday night they had a 20oz Prime Rib as well as a Surf and Turf (filet mignon and lobster tail) the cost was $29.95 and it included an appetizer, soup or salad, dinner and desert. They had other items on the pre fixe but these were all I remembered. Mom got the prime rib, I got surf and turf. For our apps we got the coconut shrimp that was served with an orange marmalade and the mozzarella sticks. The coconut shrimp was 4 shrimp and delicious. The mozzarella sticks were also 4 and tasted OK, definitely did not taste made In house. The Caesar salad was served loaded with salad dressing, but that was my fault as I did not ask for it on the side. I ordered an Old Fashion and mom ordered a soda. My old fashion was very good but I am not a pro on these. My mom said her prime rib was delicious, my filet mignon was cooked perfectly and the lobster tail was also delicious. They actually served REAL melted butter, which is nice to have without asking for real butter (not fake butter) We also each got a baked potato with our meal and it's been over a year since I've had one of these and it hit the spot perfect. The meals came with desert as well. We could bit eat another drop so we got the Apple strudel to go as they make that in house. Luckily the bisque was descent. The beers were cold . The mussels in white wine sauce my husband said were very good. My mother in law and sister in law have been telling me how good the filet mignon lunch special is. Afterall, they had been there several times over several years and ordered the same thing each time. Well, I finally got to the infamous J&R in Calverton and unfortunately after many times of going there and getting a good lunch, they will not be going back. We had more issues than we can count: 1) The waitress was just ok and gave us incorrect information about the menu which we later learned. 2) All of our filet lunches were not cooked to order (medium rare)they were medium-medium well at best with globs of sauce. 3) while the menu says "filet mignon" we got fatty, grizzly pieces of meat which they finally described as tips after we complained but this is never what my family had gotten before. They preciously got beautiful slices of filet mignon. 4) they forgot a side order of onion rings 5) The manager is uninformed about what her customers are ordering and what the actual complaint was and was more interested in hearing her own voice. 6) The owner was present at the time of our complaint and did not come over to talk to us. 7) The waitress came back over after we spoke to the manager with the check and basically said..."if you don't like it you shouldn't order it again". in the past, my family ordered the creamed spinach side which was way too salty to eat and has also ordered the lobster bisque which is not creamy at all, and is more like egg drop soup with clam chowder flavor. Recommending if you want to eat here that you keep your mouth shut or they will be rude to you and that you are ok with mediocre service and food. Really confusing lunch specials. Staff doesn't seem to know what's included and what's not included. A medium well burger came out lukewarm and charred to the point of being inedible. Sad side salad consisted of limp iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of cucumber and 2 slices or unripened tomato. This is Calverton, for heaven's sake, the land of farms with the tastiest tomatoes! Just back from Florida we found ourselves visiting J&R's Steak House twice this week. It is always wonderful to see JoAnne and Terry. The first night that we ate here hubby enjoyed the chopped steak and I had the cowboy steak (a ribeye on the bone) that was cooked perfectly. Tonight hubby was in the mood for their fabulous ribs and he enjoyed them very much. I opted for the rack of lamb which was cooked a delicious medium rare. For my first experience here I went with a 16oz Black Angus Prime Rib "Price Fixe Special" which included; an appetizer, one side, the Beef, and a Dessert. They really should consider taking the word steak house off the name. The unmarinated steaks are really bad, lacking any seasoning at all. Went to J&R last night with a friendly party of 13. Our table was waiting and our waiter Ken took good care of us getting our drinks, then appys and then our mains out in good time. The atmosphere was festive and their daily Price Fixe menu was perfect. The hit of the night was the 20 oz Prime rib dinner. appy, soup or salad and a beautiful piece of perfectly cooked meat with Baked Potato. And, of course dessert came with it. My first experience with J&R's Steak House was in Stony Brook. We went there often and loved it. Unfortunately over the years you could see it deteriorate until they finally closed. So some years ago we found this one in Calverton. Not far from a waterfront condo or Pied a' Terre we owned in Baiting Hollow so it was a natural fit. We haven't been here in awhile so we thought to return. One nice feature is you can make a reservation so you don't have to sit around waiting. So we're seated immediately and our waiter shows up for our drink order. Next there signature feature of elbow macaroni and pickles shows up. We both had their 12oz marinated steak with two sides. I had seasoned rice and potato. Everything was fine. Steaks were good. Now the problem. First, it's not always all about the food. The food can be awesome but the service can bring it all down. So we ask for our bill, and after what seemed like an extraordinarily long wait it shows up. I give my credit card and the waiter disappears for again a long time. All of a sudden he walks past our table and says "of I'll be with you in a minute ". Now I'm watching him at another table taking orders from eight people and chit chatting. Finally he comes over to our table and puts down our bill and my credit card. Dude, wouldn't it be logical to give me my bill so I can sign and be on my way? Just ruined my dinner experience. We had a big party (35?) after a funeral today. 2 petite-sized ladies waited on us. The blonde server had an overall great, helpful vibe and apologized for the delays, etc. The bussers were good, as well. The other woman (older, dark curly hair) rarely returned to the table, as if oblivious. When she did return, she continually reached within inches of my face instead of serving people individually.
