I think I know what the problem is which I will state later in this review. ABSOLUTELY BEST PRICES They absolutely have the best prices in northern New Jersey. How do I know? Well, it's sort of my job to know. I've literally gone to every single flooring/tiling store and Speedwell has beaten them all, sometimes by a very significant margin. If you don't believe me, call any store and get a quote on a piece of flooring. A lot of them will say they don't quote over the phone. (That's double-speak for we want you to come down and then hopefully, when you hear the price, you'll be too lazy to go back to the cheaper place and you'll just order then and there. What's crazy is that this actually works. Ask car dealers.) Think about this observation I made about them. Their normal prices are better than the sale prices of other places. It makes my job easier since I don't have to always comparison shop because I know I'm going to get the best price. I still do time to time to make sure but it's always cheaper. WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG I think the reason for the negative reviews is that this business does a lot of business with commercial buyers who buy in bulk. (Thus, the cheap prices.) They don't do as much business with residential customers so they don't have their own in-house installation crew. They sub-contract the work and that is the problem. They try to find good people but quality control is pretty tough when you are subcontracting the work out. This is probably the reason why there are so many complaints about the workmanship. Speedwell isn't overseeing the work so they can't control the results. Speedwell probably just offers installation as more of a "favor" to residential customers. (I'm not sure of this but I'm just speculating.) If I were them, I would just sell floor products rather than include installation. It's the better business model. But, what do I know, right? SELECTION AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE The ladies in the store are absolutely the nicest people you'll meet. They let me take their only sample piece over the weekend so I could bring them to job sites. My designer could now see if the sample piece's color truly matches the room's surrounding fixtures. That's really great customer service. Their store has a real wide range of products to choose from and the ladies' technical knowledge is solid. What's more important is taste and they've made some great suggestions in the past. BUY THE MATERIALS HERE. FIND YOUR OWN CONTRACTOR TO INSTALL. This is how you save a few hundred/thousand bucks. The contractor is not going to go looking for the best price like you will. But, they do get a slightly discounted contractor's price sometimes so when you go shopping around, just say that you're a designer and you want the contractor's price. Not so hard, is it? I'm a property manager so I have previously used contractors lined up to install the product. I suggest you guys to look for contractors that will just do the install. To find good contractors, ask to take a look at work projects that they have done a year or two ago. (Newly installed product will almost always look good; the bad quality reveals itself over time. Look really close and be anal.) If you still want to use Speedwell's subcontractors, ask them to only suggest contractors that they absolutely know to be awesome. I had spoken with Ron on the phone and indicated our priorities to him by phone: to be able to move quickly in the selection process, cover 2,000 sq ft, and do it within a reasonable budget. I even followed up with photos via email, so we could move faster in the process. When we came into the store though (at the agreed upon time, although Ron repeatedly told me I didn't need an appt), Ron was not immediately available and then, when we did start speaking with him: - he talked about cost as something you had to make "palatable" (as if the concept of a budget is unreasonable or distasteful) - we had to actually ask him to show us around the store because he was very focused on showing us only the most expensive vinyl -- which then turned out to not be applicable b/c it didn't come in stair treads. When discussing the fact that the vinyl would be for a basement, he should have asked about the entry to the basement and guided us appropriately to feasible options. - someone else arrived to talk to Ron while we were there and he simply dismissed us, telling us that it would take multiple visits to make a decision, despite us being very clear about our time sensitivity. - he refused to explain how the pricing would work while we were there, and what components would make up the total - he never said "bye", "thanks", or even "have a nice weekend" to us when we left after 1 hr in the store We were very frustrated when we left, given Ron's dismissal and his inability to understand and help us achieve our goals, and I called later in the day and spoke with Donna. Donna said she was leaving for the night and would call me back Monday or Tuesday and would also set us us with an additional sales rep, Doug. Well... Donna never called me back. And Doug was as incompetent as Ron, extremely unresponsive (again, despite our time pressure), and just grossly smarmy with my husband (when my husband returned some samples) -- read: used car salesman vibe, not genuine interest. After 1 week post-measurements, Doug let us know he had a quote for us (which he never provided in writing) and said it was for three bedrooms. When I asked about the fourth bedroom, he said he'd have to call me back and then when he did (several hours later)... the price suddenly went up a few thousand dollars. He misread their own measurements, quoted us incorrectly the first time, and didn't even include the full extent of the costs at that point (plus still no calculation for stairs). When I let Doug know that we had received a quote elsewhere for similar quality products for several thousand dollars less overall, he refused to believe it, and told me I should bring those samples in so he could explain to me how they were lesser quality. He also asked if my other quote (despite me saying it was from a local company) was from Home Depot -- as if Home Depot was obviously lesser than their options (irrespective of the option selected). When I told him it wasn't Home Depot and was, in fact, another small local business, he flat out refused to believe that was the case. I tried to give them one more chance though and asked that, if they wanted the business, to look for options similar in style to what we had picked at Cove and propose something that might be more cost competitive. I suggested that we'd come back in and could review what he found together. After numerous days, he didn't respond so I sent an email summarizing our discussion. Ultimately though, he decided we weren't worth his time (because who should actually work to understand their customers' goals and help meet them?) and wished us luck with our "project". No, Doug, Donna, and Ron -- good luck to you. You need the luck more. I've found a great local flooring company that actually wants our business and your disinterest in working with us led us right to them. Update following the owner's response to my review: It does not shock me that the owner is trying to discredit my review by placing blame back on me (a move, where I'm living, etc.). None of those explain why Cove treated us poorly and refused to work with us, and are just a distraction from the core of the issue -- Cove is not interested in understanding customer needs and aligning to them in service of being able to successfully transact a deal. They also mention in the review below that they intended to show us alternate products, but that is a lie (and was already disproven in my original review) -- I had to ask for alternate products to be shown to us via phone, then via email, and ultimately received a reply from them wishing us "luck" with our project and dismissing the opportunity to do business together. They never prepared any additional products to show us, despite multiple requests.

I was just driving home when this Blue Standard Tile Van pulls up so close I can't see the front the vehicle, then proceeds to ride my bumper to a red light where there are lot of cars in front of me. The light turns green but it is not a long light so turns yellow before I am close enough to turn and again the van is super close to my bumper and then he proceeds to swerve into the right lane and make a left through a VERY RED RED LIGHT! He is so close to my bumper that he almost hits the back end of my car and then makes the left turn so sharp he almost hits the front of my car. I arrive home shaken as was my child. I call the store to let them know, the manager or owner, not sure who as they would not provide a name, gets on the phone and just says hello with an attitude. I explain that his driver just almost hit me twice on River Road and then ran a red light onto Route 10. He goes oh, then silence and then finally asks if I am okay. I explain that my child was shaken up and it was very dangerous and try to explain the whole situation but he cuts me off and tells me he has listened to enough of my rant. Then in a very "I don't really care" voice says I said I'm sorry which he never did and then said he would speak to them. He was so rude, condescending and unconcerned it was appalling. I can only imagine how they treat you if you have an issue with their products or service. There are plenty of other tile places, I would suggest one of those that actual cares about other people.

I'm on my third big project using supplies from Standard Tile. This wide-open store has displays…read morethat let you browse floor tiles by pulling out enormous flat drawers, and check out wall tiles on huge walls that roll back and forth. Both are big improvements on the system some places use, basically big heavy boards with just a couple of pieces on each, all jammed together in a standing rack. The selection at the East Hanover store is large but thanks to that careful display construction it didn't feel overwhelming to me. Joey A. was a big help with finding selections, suggesting size and color options, giving me quotes in email and correcting a box of broken decorative pieces. Also threw me a small discount, thanks man. As with every tile store I've found, only grout is in stock locally, every other d*mn thing has to come from far away and takes 1-2 weeks. Return policy here on non-special orders is full boxes within 15 days. Which of course is impossible, construction schedules never work out that neatly. Anyhow if you have a full box you should keep that ish for repairs when something goes south three years later. Basically ya gotta treat all sales here as final, don't kid yourself otherwise. These guys also will arrange for shower doors and glass panels, all strictly list price and boy those prices are daunting.
