Scam!! They add on extra fees, extra tips & tax on top of tips!!! Under new management! Beware!! They billed us almost $110 charge for our $73 dollar order!! The two of us had 1 tiny well margarita each at $22 + we split 1 $29 tiny burger. Thats $73. Our bartender told me since I said the word "margarita" it was an extra $8, but it was well I said, that's the way it is he said! The bill clearly read $22 for a margarita. Then he added on another $8 + his own 22% gratuity without saying he did! (Hoping to scam me on an additional tip, I feel.) The atmosphere is dynamite at this Aspen 1889 classic Victorian hotel. And the vibe is truly great. But the prices have gone up, up and away in the last few years. Stop at The Jerome for a drink and perhaps add fries, but I recommend that you go elsewhere for your meal. This place almost gets 4 stars on its history alone. First bar in Aspen. 19th century. One of the chandeliers is original from its opening, a lot of other original parts of this bar. Sat at the bar, attendant obliged to put on the end of a great hockey game I was glad to see. This place is known for its hamburgers too. Rather small but good. Enough folks working the bar so they all helped out. Got a bit of an attitude for asking for the hockey game to be put on. Didn't like that else they would have got 5 stars. Came to the J-Bar strictly for the Aspen Crud. It was amazing, I was not disappointed 10/10 would recommend. Once my Aspen Crud mission was complete I was able to appreciate the bars aesthetic. There is an interesting fact about the bar that I will not spoil so that you can hear it from a bartender in person. (Hint, the bar is old) The server seemed a little annoyed with our group but I can't be upset about that, we were really giving off tourist energy. J-Bar is a really cool cocktail bar located at the Hotel Jerome in Downtown Aspen. It's a little more of a high end bar that serves interesting food and specialized cocktails. It came highly recommended by a few people so we came here for happy hour for a few drinks and apps. I got a few small dishes consisting of the twice cooked wings and hummus. The wings were very salty, which made them a hard to eat. In general they were ok, but nothing amazing. The hummus was pretty good and came in a nice sized portion. I also had an old fashioned, which unfortunately was loaded with ice and watered down the drink pretty fast. Wasn't great. I have to say, I had higher expectations for J-Bar. I really wanted to love his place. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but the food and drink experience wasn't great. Service was excellent and the vibe and look of the bar is awesome. We have always loved the J Bar and the service. Sadly this time will be our last. We went in for dinner and drinks and left thinking it was a bit pricey and not as good as in the past. We went back 2 nights later and had a drink before going home. The waiter (great guy Frank) was kind enough to tell us that the 22% gratuity was already included. We were not told that on our previous dinner a night before which explains why a 25% tip on top of a 22% precharged gratuity made our dinner so expensive. He is polite, fun, attentive, good conversation, knows how to make drinks, and very easy on the eyes! I remember their burger being out of this world a few years ago but today it was just ok. My wife's veggie burger was bland and mushy. And the service was not good. We arrived with our toddler at 1145 and were told that, despite being seated, that we couldn't order until noon. We placed our order right at noon and were told that our order was the first one in the kitchen. Despite this, we waited about 40 minutes for our food and watched people who got there after us eat and then leave. A B- overall. Too much good food in Aspen to return anytime soon. read more

Stopped into the Jerome after an afternoon hike at Smugglers with 4 people. The place was packed but luckily there was a booth to fit our party... since we were absolutely starving! Our waitress came over and welcomed us back as she set down our waters. We perused the menu and all decided to start with chicken noodle soup (which now comes in 3 sizes) and split two burgers since we had a big dinner planned at the Pine Creek Cookhouse later on. The soup was phenomenal and the perfect way to warm up after a day out in the cold. The burgers would have been better if they were cooked more. We all ordered medium, but it was more medium-rare. The fries, which come with the burger, were perfect! With the burger you have the option for several add ons including cheese, avocado, onions, bacon, lobster salad, and much more. Where to start. You expect high prices in Aspen and at a spot in one of the best hotels in town, you can add another few bucks to anything. That said, for a $30+ burger, it was basically a hockey puck. $24 meatballs (4 bite sized balls) were fine but you probably could do better at Kings. The $65 fillet which was pretty small was the only thing well cooked. Of the 3 burgers our table ordered medium rare, none came out at temp and had to be sent back (all were cooked to dead grey). Ask for bacon or onions and it was a crap shoot what would come. To make things worse, our server was a mess. Too stressed out to get anything right or serve us in a timely manner. The final straw was the included 22% tip - not that I wouldn't have tipped that much but they calculate that tip including the tax. That's BS. Ever been curious to experience what it was like in the western days? J-Bar is exactly that. This historic western gem was built in 1889 and once played home to Aspens go-to watering hole. You'll know exactly what I mean as soon as you walk through those double doors. We went straight to the bar and was able to sit wherever we found room. The back bar itself was beautiful. The staff was friendly-ish. Right away I noticed other guest around me have a cup of popcorn in front of them and come to find out, they have complimentary spiced popcorn upon request. Not sure why it's such a secret but I'm happy I asked because that was some good popcorn. When I was first told about J-Bar I immediately heard the words 'aspen crud'. Doesn't sound too appealing but I promise you it is so much more. Vanilla milkshake spiked with bourbon? Need I say more?! They had a great selection of bourbon and whiskey. Their burger is 'legendary' and massive in size. Don't be afraid to add the topping of lobster salad to help take it to that next level. But I'm sure by now you can tell this is no cheap shindig we're talking. A bit/a lot on the pricey side but worth enjoying a cocktail, at the least. The J-Bar has changed, and not for the better. This has been my favorite go-to in town for 40 years, and as recently as two years ago the food was a fitting complement to this exceptional saloon. No more. The burger we have always loved was unseasoned, undercooked, minimally garnished, and small. We politely sent it back, along with the chicken wings that were dry (a first) and flavorless. Two new plates, which was all we ordered, and we just dropped our shoulders in sad disappointment. Including a 22% gratuity added insult to injury, and with no apology on the food. Management is drafting off the glorious history of this special place with an unimaginative and overpriced food offering. The two stars are for the kind service and the atmosphere. There are much better places to spend your money in Aspen. I would say pass on the J-Bar. Food is overpriced for what it is. A grilled chicken sandwich for $22 is pretty steep. I can see paying these prices if the food can justify it but it definitely does not. To start, we walked in and were not greeted by anyone for a good 5 minutes. I get that places can get busy, but to make matters worse, when I walked to the back of the restaurant to find someone, the waitress was counting her tips on the back of the bar. I asked her if we should just sit anywhere and she gave me a rude glare like I had just made her lose count, then nodded yes. I almost walked out right then but something told me to say and give the food a shot. So after sitting down, our waitress comes over to greet us. Of course, it was the same waitress who had just been rude moments earlier and what do you know, she was just as happy and chipper as a waitress could be now. We saw right through that fake attitude, which really ruined the entire meal for us. The food was fine, nothing special and not worth the money. It was our last night in Aspen and we had decided on this place because it looked nice and the food looked good. Needless to say, we were super disappointed on our last meal choice.
