Pick 2 Enteee: Voodoo Chicken and Drunken Chicken

Great place and great food. Also, one of the few places with Red Cream Soda! Definitely will return!

J Gumbos is just an awesome place to grab lunch or dinner! It is under new ownership after reopening. New remodeling makes the place look sharp and the bar is soon to be opening as well. I've eaten here plenty of times and the food is just great, the drunken chicken is my favorite. If you love Cajun food or want to give it a try for the first time, definitely stop in here!!

Great place for Cajun food in town And a cool Atmosphere. I Like the combo option of getting two different flavors in one dish. There's also a half size option which is around $5.50. Always get the garlic bread. Really cool back bar area, relaxing and very Louisiana Bayou feel. The atmosphere inside is really neat, cool Louisiana scenery and artwork. Like the quick-serve option of getting your food and sitting down. They have some nacho options with I need to try Soon. Students get a discount with their ID. Closed on Mondays. And the bar is closed but they are working on getting it running again!

Nor big on Cajun cuisine but the dining partner raved over the Chicken Zydeco...I tried his and was sold. Ended up ordering a bowl of my own tasty, sweet/slightly spicy, succulent chicken, brown rice filled Zydeco to go. That was a lot... Ok, moving on... The décor gives it an authentic NOLA feel. Although you had to be there to truly understand I tried my best to capture the realness in Tour de Christy footage. This restaurant mirrors NOLA's French Quarter to a T! Delicious Cajun-inspired from that includes crawfish, gumbo, Po'Boys, étouffée, beans & rice, etc. Daily Specials are available. Add toppings for upcharge. Cooler containing desserts, soft drinks and sides available as well. Plenty seating, beautiful artwork and a full bar. Service was excellenté! ~Christy

So good... every freakin' time. Feeling cold and in need of warmed up? Order drunken chicken with a dallop of sour cream and sprinkle of green onions. The tea is also freakin' tasty, and I don't know why.

I went here on Fat Tuesday to celebrate with a few friends. We took up the whole bar and the bartenders were still courteous and welcoming. I think they were the highlight of our experience because they were didn't brush us off once we got our drinks - which some places do. They stuck around and talked to us. The owner was doing a raffle for free t-shirts so he came in once in a while and let us pick out the numbers. It was a small gesture but it added to the fun atmosphere of Mardi Gras celebrations. I got the Gumbo this time, though I really wanted Jambalaya. I swear to you it's always out when I am there. It wasn't bad! I also got a Hurricane bucket for $5 as part of their special and that was pretty good too. It was one of those drinks that doesn't hit you until later so beware. Overall, you can't go wrong with food and drinks at J Gumbo's!

Being so close to campus and with a rollercoaster of reviews on Yelp, I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived at J Gumbos. I did need something close to my hotel and fast, and this venue provided both! Everything is prepared and ready for you to order from behind the counter. Similar to a Subway makes sandwiches, J Gumbos will add your ingredients to a bowl as you request 'em. When I explained that I'd never been there before, the attendant offered me a small cup & spoon sample of the ones I thought I'd be interested in. The Voodoo Chicken had a seriously good burn, so I decided to get this and the highly recommended Bumblebee Stew to temper the heat (a.k.a. the Jean Lafitte). It came with rice, cheese, jalapeno slices, sour cream, & green onions. I requested some crawfish (for an extra $1) to get another cajun ingredient, but was a bit perturbed when the attendant took a sandwich sized ziplock baggie of pre-cooked crawfish tails out and heated them in a warm water bath. The dish itself was a solid meal and I could not finish the entire regular sized bowl. I loved the heat and appreciated the speedy service and comfortable atmosphere to eat. I think if I were back in college this would have easily been a 4 star rating for me, but my palette has experienced an array of amazing cajun and creole dishes that I can't give that designation. Still a solid choice for a quick and tasty meal! :-)

Vegan white bean chili with extra bread. It was delicious but not as spicy and I had hoped.

Hello, new go-to lunch spot when I'm visiting Terre Haute. I live in Indy and regularly eat at Yats for their vegan white chili so when I found out J. Gumbo's also has a vegan white chili, I knew where I was going on my next Haute excursion. I met my mom here for lunch on a Friday afternoon and there was a steady flow of diners but it wasn't too crowded or busy for comfort. The dining area is so large that is would be pretty difficult for this place too get crowded, but I have heard they stay pretty busy for the most part. What I loved about J. Gumbo's is that it is fast, cheap, and delicious. Your food is prepared and ready when you pay, so there is no waiting on your food if you're in a hurry. The prices were very reasonable, and cheaper than average for a sit down restaurant. Extra bread was a must, and for 50 cents, impossible for me to pass up. I also noticed that they had several more options that my go-to Cajun/Creole place here in Indy, including tow vegetarian options and one vegan option. If you haven't already tried J. Gumbo's and you live in the Haute or are visiting, what are you waiting for?

This was our lunch choice after our daughter's freshman orientation at ISU. We chose it because Yelp told us to. She this is why we always listen to Yelp. The food was fantastic, spicy, and fully customizable. We we able to try samples of as many different menu options as we wanted and we could mix whatever we wanted, too, which was what I did and I was super pleased with my choices. On top of crazy yummy food, rude customer service was AMAZING. They treated us like the family members that they like and show up to thanksgiving for. It was awesome. Highly recommended!

Drunken chicken and red beans and rice. I suggest Paying the 50¢ and adding bread.

Not only that, but the food was stellar. Here's what we tried: -Foie Gras Special: 9/10 - I just love foie gras and wow this one was cooked to perfection and the accompaniment of the cream cheese foam and the apple was amazing! I could eat it all to myself. -Denver American Wagyu 8oz: 8/10 - I did really like it, though I may have gone with Spiralis cut next time, as this was small and not as flavorful as I would've dreamed of. Decadent, of course. -Mac and Cheese: 10/10 - A perfect Mac and cheese. I don't think I could've dreamt of a better one. The flavor was outstanding, the pasta was al dente, and the cheese was just soooo gooey. It was addictive. -Truffle Butter Mashed Potatoes: 7/10 - While these were good, they had no truffle butter taste to them at all. In fact, we wondered if it had been mistakenly marked as truffle butter, but apparently it was correct. -Korean Corn: 8/10 - Cheesy, gochujang-ey, yummy. It's kind of like a Korean elote, so I'm not mad at all. -Gooey Butter Cake: 9/10 - I really don't know how to describe this other than sweet and yummy. It was also soft inside, which paired well with the crispier crust. -Chocolate Decadence: 10/10 - This just melted in my mouth. It was gooey and delicious and dark and rich and WOW. It's like the pudgiest brownie you'll ever eat. Overall, well impressed!

It's part college bar, part live music venue, part sports bar with golf simulators, and part wing/grill restaurant. The concept sounds fun on paper, but in practice it comes across dated and unfocused. The food was the biggest disappointment. I went in expecting solid bar food--nothing fancy, just reliable wings and fried staples. What arrived was inconsistent at best. Two wings were undercooked, and one wasn't even battered on one side. At first I assumed it was frozen food quality, but it honestly felt more like a lack of kitchen consistency and oversight. If you're hungry, the food is edible, but it's not something I'd go out of my way for. Service didn't help the experience. The bartender spent a noticeable amount of time sitting at a table socializing rather than checking on guests, which made the place feel inattentive despite not being overwhelmingly busy. The atmosphere clearly caters to the college crowd, and to be fair, I can see why students would enjoy it--drinks, music, and a casual hangout spot. It's probably not going out of business anytime soon because it fills that niche. But if you're expecting a polished sports bar, quality grill food, or a standout dining experience, this likely won't meet those expectations. After reading other reviews, the "hit or miss" reputation seems accurate. My recommendation: stop in for a beer first. If the vibe is good that night, stay. If not, cash out and move on. If wings are your goal, there are better options in town. Overall, not terrible--but definitely lackluster and not a destination spot.

My 3 star is simply because the ambiance of this place could use a massive face lift (new paint,…read morebetter upholstery on chairs, etc). But when you get a bill of $30 for 3 people during the late lunch hour (what a steal!), and for value, this place is a 5 star. Twice, I have dined here, both for a late lunch with my parents after visiting the Catmosphere across the street. Juan C was our server both times and he was very kind to my older parents, thank you for that Juan. Although my dad and I order standard items from the menu, my mom needs simply a plain ground beef burrito with cheese and nothing else. Like nothing...tortilla, beef, cheese, nothing else on the plate please. Basic. Juan delivered and adjusted the price accordingly. For Terre Haute, this Mexican food is pretty OK....not great...but pretty good. Juan the server was authentically nice. In the footprint of a former bank, this place is decoratively a mismatch of many things. A mismatch of colors, bank relics, chair fabrics, flooring, parking lot is odd.... It is what it is. Bathrooms could use a remodel, cashier area seems odd, front entrance area cramped. So with that, Mis Tres Potrillios is a 3, but I would go back. Support the local guy. (new paint
