They put so many French fries underneath the fish to make it seem as if you have gotten your money's worth and it's over priced. The banana pudding was the worst I ever had. I like J.J.Fish but all J.J.Fish are Not created equal. The best is San Lorenzo, then East Oakland, then on International Blvd. , downtown Oakland and then San Francisco trailing behind. I no longer live in the East Bay so mostly I go to the San Francisco store. I love fish and so when very hungry, too late to cook .., there I go. I take a chance. They are painfully inconsistent. If their manager is not there?? Good luck, trial and error. When they are 'right' it's hard to mess up fish. They have issues with cooking oysters. Either, overcooking or not done. But, sometimes the oil is too old. By the time you get there late evening. But, when they are good they are GOOD and that is how they hook you to go back ... lol Their service is decent. ***3.5 Stars*** Here comes JJ's with that fried fish and shrimp!!! It is quite smackin' if I shall say so myself. Traditionally, I'm more of a beer battered and tempura fried fish kinda gal. I ordered ahead but they still make you stand in the same line as the walk-ins. Not the best setup here, but what can you do? People were social distancing while waiting in line which was good, but of course the line was out the door. Took a while to get to the register but got my food as soon as I got up there. The lady at the register is also the same person answering the phones too. They could definitely benefit from having another body back there to help. Ordered the fried shrimp and fish combo and the portions were nice and big. Both were nicely battered and tasted relatively fresh. But damn, waaaay too much salt on them thangs. Like a whole salt shakers worth. Next time I'll ask them to tone down the salt if they can do it. They give you hella fries but they're average. I don't think they have cocktail sauce here. Definitely ask for extra tartar because they're kinda skimpy with it. They have all kind of desserts here too. One of the ladies that I was talking to in line told me that all of their desserts were the bomb. She recommended the banana pudding and of course I ordered it. My favorite thing to order is the fried scallops and oysters ! ( the other jjs scallops I swear aren't the same ) I DO NOT RECOMMEND ordering the sides like gumbo or jambalaya!! Those type of dishes are supposed to be cooked with love and takes TIME. So don't expect nothing but mediocre when it comes to the sides ( Mac and cheese is decent , I always just get fries , you know fish and chips ) I've never had a problem with the employees . But I also have a nice bubbly personality so I guess I get what I give everywhere I go :) They're supposed to charge you for extra sauce like tartar but sometimes they'll hook you up . Saw a lady coming out and asked her how it was, she said it was good, another guy inside said EVERYTHING was good. The two things I got were bad, very bad. I ordered the fried red snapper and medium gumbo. I was excited when I got to big bags of food. The gumbo was much larger than I thought and there was a lot of fish in the snapper order. The snapper was overcooked, dry and lacked seasoning. The overcooking not only made it dry but also chewy, could only eat about 2 pieces. The gumbo was the second worst I've ever had. No flavor at all, terrible sausage like some Hillshire Farms they picked up at the store. Didn't even eat the chicken because chicken in gumbo gets flavor from the rue and I could tell it was cooked with no seasoning. I knew it was going to be garbage. I feel one ketchup, hot sauce and tartar sauce half filled isn't sufficient for a 3 item combo. To charge 25 cent extra is excessive. I also notice a $4 price markup on GrubHub versus the restaurant menu. I did not confirm if this applied to every order. But for what I ordered it did.
