One of the difficult things to do is rate a Chinese restaurant that is on the east side of Oakland, in the outskirts of Oakland Chinatown. I grew up in Oakland Chinatown from the early 60's into part of the 70's. Thus, I am partial to the Chinese restaurants in what was once my old stomping grounds. However, I admit that street parking is problematic in Chinatown. The only public garage is in the lower levels of the Pacific Renaissance Center. Tasty Szechuan is on Havenscourt Blvd., between Foothill and Bancroft. Street parking is problematic in this area, too. My male companion is a regular customer, usually ordering the dried fried ribs and chicken chow mein to go. Since I like hot 'n sour soup, he surprised me with a container thereof. I have not had dried fried ribs in a while. Too many years have gone by without eating them. The best ones I had were from a Chinese restaurant in NSO on San Pablo Avenue. Unfortunately, that restaurant has been long gone. These ribs were good, doctored up with some sweet 'n sour sauce. The chicken chow mein was okay. However, the hot 'n sour soup was on point. Thick and not too spicy - just the way I like it. Even though the food is more than a three star rating (3.25), it is at this time I can only give it a three star. A visit to the restaurant to peruse their menu would probably give me a better perspective as to what they have to offer. read more

The egg drop soup was decent I got the broccoli dish and it looked nothing like the photo online. The photo showed a simple steamed broccoli dish. What I received was a soggy mess with loads of some kind of sauce on it. Gross The Kung pao chicken and sesame beef was the same. The cuts of meat that were in these dishes were questionable. Ribs were cool, just be careful if you have questionable teeth - the fry is really hard and you may get small bones. Total hand to mouth eating for these. They did give a lot and they were crispy. Combo A is all I get from here. I feel $8 bucks it's a little high considering location and what you can get for a combo plate at other Chinese restaurants in better locations. The customer service is hit or miss. You get an EXACT four shrimp in your shrimp fried rice. Can you spare it? Hell they appear to be the 31-40 count so I don't get the skimping. Nonetheless it's very tasty and addicting. It's my belief/hope things are made to order despite not being able to see behind the prison counter setup. I used to love to drop off the pg&e payment next door because that meant that I would get Chinese food in exchange:) I moved to Texas 9 years ago and I have searched high and low for a restaurant with similar great food, but have yet to find one. Not even close! Whenever I make a visit back home, this place is a MUST!! Dried Fried ribs, shrimp fried rice with extra egg and if I am feeling fancy, I'll order sweet and sour pork. My oh my! I LOVE THIS FOOD! The same husband and wife run this restaurant and the quality has not changed a bit. The prices has increased a little, but that's everywhere. Chicken garlic noodles,veggies to large for bit size, bland no flavor. Prawn fried rice was so dark, like they dropped the soy sauce bottle in my rice. 4 shrimp not prawns in a large, rice vary stale and hard. Like left over 4 days. The area is sketchy and parking can be funky but I braved that to find out if this place lived up to its name. It wasn't worth it. The sweet and sour pork was breaded, gummy and tasteless and the rice was old, dry and hard. An order of "house chow fun" featured shrimp that tasted just-this-side of fresh and although I asked for it "spicy" it tased like the standard version.
