What a warm and welcoming place! A few friends and I stopped by back in October for pizza on a Friday night. Everyone was so nice, there were folks jammin with guitars and a banjo. What a time! We love this place. Whenever we are in Southern, VT we come here as often as we can. We weren't able to try the wood fired pizza cooked there, but we took it home and baked it ourselves and it was very good. The coffee and breakfasts area also good and the food cooked to order and very fresh and quality ingredients. The cook accommodated my husband's vegetarianism by adding lots of veggies to his breakfast burritos! They sell lots of snacks and specialty items, most locally made. And one of our favorite things is the thrift store upstairs. We didn't find anything this time but last time we got several things for the house. Can't wait to go back! read more

What a cute place! The service was a little on the slow side but I'm ok with that since I have a ton of restaurant experience under my belt and at the end of the day, the order was absolutely correct. I will say that the bacon was incredible! It was well done (the way I like it) and had this candied texture with a smokey hint to it. The bread was homemade and comforting to eat (knowing it wasn't processed and gross). But the real star of their show is the fact that it's a non-profit that helps out local agriculture. It's donation based so you pay whatever your heart feels. What a lovely purpose. It's refreshing to see a "pay it forward" structure. read more

Sadly, this place is not what it used to be. It had been a favorite breakfast stop for months on end; suddenly, the staff, prices and quality all changed for the worse. Don't bother with the breakfast burrito. It's been replaced by a limp wrap filled with over-salted eggs, bland cheese and undercooked black beans. The salsa was conspicuously absent, too. It was a pretty clear departure from what my partner and I had grown to love. I'm sad to say that after so many lovely Sunday morning breakfasts, I just won't bother anymore. read more

I used to really love it here. But the quality of the food and atmosphere has rapidly degraded over the past year or so. It must be under new management or something. The West Townshend Store used to be a lively, warm environment. The staff seemed like they really enjoyed working there and interacting with you. Every time I've gone back in the past few months, it seems like they can't wait to leave, no one cares about food quality or service, and it seems like the shelves are always bare. There are so many kids working there! They have no work ethic and couldn't care less. Are they the reason the hours have become so unreliable? Or are they just trying to escape that awful manager?! I've had the misfortune of being there a few times when he's around. OMG, he is snarky and swears all the time at his employees in front of the customers, barks at people, and is extremely unapproachable. He's beyond rude - clearly not cut out for customer service, and certainly not to head up a community center. There's a decent selection of food, but watch out for long white hairs, (ew!) and many of the pre-made soups and salads are far too salty. (I can salt my own food, thanks. Is that not what the salt and pepper shakers on the tables are for?) I am not going there any more, there are other businesses with people who actually care about what they're doing, and having happy customers as well as happy employees. I've been to West Townshend Country Store several times when visiting Vermont. The staff is extremely personable and friendly, the food is reasonable priced, and everything tastes homemade (especially the pizza!). You can also find some great deals on the thrift store upstairs. I managed to score a North Face fleece for something like $3. Love this store for their local food, sense of community, reasonable prices & extremely friendly staff ... definitely going to keep coming back here. read more

We came here one Sunday afternoon on our way to a hike at the Townshend Dam. I've stopped before in the mornings for their good coffee. We are so happy we stopped for lunch! We found local bacon and meat for sale in the back freezer's as well as local soap. The lunch food was Delicious and super affordable and the BEST part was there was a little jam session happening in the corner. It's become one of our go to spots for when we're eating out and this is the ONLY place I buy my bacon from now. read more

I love this store. It's a great place to chat with people from town, and the food is fresh and local. I especially enjoy going for breakfast and getting farm-fresh eggs on homemade sourdough bread, and then afterwards checking out the thrift store upstairs. There are some great finds there -- I've gotten 2 amazing winter coats for $6 a piece! Make sure to check out the farmer's market on Fridays during the summer and early fall, in addition to the wood-fired pizza and local concerts that often take place here. read more

Stopped by today for lunch - and it was delicious. Had a wrap with the curry chicken salad and a slice of bacon and some lettuce greens. Freshly made and just what I was looking for. Great friendly greeting when I walked in. Also while they were prepping my sandwich I had a look around at all the local Vermont products, including local eggs, cheese, humus, and freshly baked cookies and local sourdough bread. I loved the very friendly atmosphere and the delicious sandwiches . All I can say is YUM ! They also offered free soup or by donation which was a yummy gaspacho that they explained was paid for by donations. I love the idea of passing it forward. I like the atmosphere and quality of food products. Sandwiches and deserts are great. My only qualm is the speed of service--some of the teens who work after school are quite slow. In one case, I waited an extremely long time for a sandwich despite being the ONLY customer, and my sandwich still came our missing an ingredient. Aside from this instance, I'd still go back and rate the place well because you can't beat their quality. read more

If I could take any shop with me when I leave VT, this would be it. The atmosphere isn't so much "mom and pop" as it is the vibe of that wholesome, spunky aunt who is always giving you tasty, healthy(ish) food. I love it. The food is amazing. There's a limited menu but something for everyone on it -- including vegan/vegetarian options and gluten free options. For those without a limited dietary plan, try the breakfast burrito -- egg, cheese (cheddar is A+), salsa, and if you want, add sausage. For lunch, don't shy away from the soup and bread. A 12oz soup is pretty filling! Any sandwich is a great option, and they had a veggie burger for a special when I was there. There's also often extra seasonal salads (e.g. potato, chicken), veggies, pizza, or other odds and ends in the cold case display. There are pastries (donuts, scones, cookies) and also a little farmstand. For drinks, they have grab-and-go teas, kombucha, milk, etc. The coffee hits the spot, and they also have great bagged tea. They also offer wine and beer, but only if you drink it on site (not to go). Open mic on Fridays after 6pm. For anyone looking for an internet connection, they have free wifi and seems like plenty of tables. Nice coffee house atmosphere. A word for etiquette: Don't bring your dog here; so far I haven't found any place in VT that will allow dogs in the restaurant because of a recent crackdown on the health code. I always ask before I bring a dog into an establishment, but I noticed some tourists do not. Don't be that guy. Don't put the staff in an awkward spot. read more

My husband and I have been here a few times, but the last time, 2 weeks ago on Sunday, they burned a grilled sandwich, and put it face down in the plate. There were a couple of young people there, and they were using their bare hands to touch the food and then go to the cash register in between. Gross! When my husband mentioned the burned bread, the young woman there said "That's the hazard of grilling." NOT customer service oriented. Too bad, because we really liked this place and at no other time has this happened...it seems that young workers who have no clue about cleanliness and hygiene shouldn't work there...disappointing... read more

We were so happy upon returning to VT after a long winter away to be greeted so warmly by the staff, Ely and Abby! We love the breakfast sandwiches and Ely and Abby miraculously remember how we like it even after months away.
