I've been using J&J Gardening for over 10 years. Never been disappointed and Jose will check in later to make sure I'm still happy. I've had neighbors ask for their contact info because my yard looks so beautiful. My garden is my living art work and J&J keeps it looking fresh. Plus they've done the landscaping, hardscaping, irrigation and tree work. Jose's knowledge of plants is very impressive and he will nicely tell me if a plant I want may not work for the area and suggest something that will work. I've used so many other landscapers before meeting J&J Gardening that were more expensive and I got less from them. I had Jose and his crew fully remodel my patio. This included demolishing an existing paver patio with slightly raised planters, demolishing the stacked stone on a retaining wall, running irrigation, running speaker conduits, base rock, sand base, compacting, installing new pavers and polymeric sand (with a very custom design), installing low voltage electric, and installing new tile and cast cement wall caps on the retaining wall. To add complexity, the only access to the patio was through the garage and house, and down a set of stairs. They laid down tarps and Ram Board to protect the house, and were very careful the whole time. They were fast and professional and very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend their services! J&J gardening is great. They're always on time and professional. They do a great job with mowing the lawn and regular maintenance. It would have been 5 stars but whenever they're asked for any additional trimming, even a small branch, they quote additional amount that's unbelievable. I have loquat trees and technically it should be included in the regular maintenance fee but whenever they're asked to trim branches that reach our heads, they want additional $50 to $100. read more

There's more. A few years later, my dog died and I got...THREE MORE (don't judge me). And then a drought happened, during which these dogs chewed up the wiring that controlled the sprinklers. And the house sitter (who am I kidding, he was/is my love interest) didn't notice. Soooo many things died. Well...after over five years since we bought the house, we finally had our trees trimmed! We've been trying to do it ourselves but we really didn't know what we were doing. I recently had Jose and his crew come in and completely renovate my backyard with drip irrigation. I will not put a before picture as it is too embarrassing but I am completely thrilled with my new yard. I actually want to go out to my yard again after many years of out of control overgrowth and weeds taking over my yard. I called J&J after my yard was in a debacle due to Craigslist hired service, gone wrong. I was panicked because the job for a sprinkler and sod installation. The Craigslist person had spent days and days digging out my old grass, piled it on my driveway, asked ME what I was going to do with the pile and told me the job would cost $600 more than quoted to complete. As each day passed I realized that he had no idea what he was doing and asked him not to return. At this point I was left with a huge pile of dirty on the driveway and a backyard full of bare dirt. I found J&J on Yelp and decided to give them a try because the reviews were decent and they responded to my request for an estimate so quickly. I was relieved beyond words when they provided a very thorough and professional plan for how they would do the job and a reasonable cost estimate. I couldn't hire them fast enough. I was anxious to get the project completed and felt like I came across the right people to complete the job. Every word that was promised during the initial meeting was fulfilled exactly as promised. The project took exactly the length of time that was stated. Each morning I was reminded exactly what the course of action would be and then they commenced to doing exactly that. J&J proved to be quality service, reliable and dependable. I thought I had arranged for a one time clean-up and then regular weekly service. They showed up a few days later than I thought they would but did a good job of getting the yard back in shape for the initial clean-up. That was two months ago and they have not been back to do any weekly yard service. No calls explaining why they had not started the weekly service. After all those great reviews it seems to me they are now too busy to proved consistent yard service to new customers. I'm disappointed, and still in need of a good gardener! read more

We needed three trees and four big shrubs removed from my backyard, so we got three estimates for the job. First two quoted about $500, J & J GARDENING quoted us only $275. That's a HUGE difference, folks. Jose (one of the J's) said he'd be back in two days... Two days later, Jose and his crew came in and wrecked shop. I called them after San Jose Gardening Service(s) took a month of call to finally tell me that would not do the job they had accepted. J&J came out the very day I called and gave me a estimate. It was higher than San Jose but I was impressed with Jose's knowledge. A couple of days later the crew arrived and in a few hours cleared the jungle in front and back. The yards are beautiful. They even got rid of the grass growing between the cracks in my deck! They left the place spotless. They went beyond the minimum, dead-heading all the flowering plants. Check out "J&J Gardening." I found them after trying (and failiing) to get ahold of the other crew I'd previously used on my back yard, trees, & gutters, I gave them a call. Showed up on time, and gave me an overview of what they were here to do in order to make sure that we were on the same page. A very reasonable price to do the entire back yard, take out a number of volunteer trees, clean up the gutters, and clean out over six months of leaves & detritus. They hauled it all away, cleaned it up, and paid special attention to the exterior cabling on the house. They even made sure to check in with me periodically to show me the progress and make sure they were on track. Pretty darned happy right now! J & J, Juan and Jose, or is is Jose and Juan, well which ever it is, they do fantastic work!! They come out to our house every two weeks on Monday like clock work and mow, trim the plants and trees, and they even pick up the clippings. They are a little on the pricey side, our yard is $75, but they have excellent service! They even trimmed and cleaned up our 2 foot deep grass in the back yard that we don't normally mow(since we don't want to pick up after our dog that often). J&J Gardening has been maintaining our yard for over three years. They do fantastic work. I don't know what we would do without them! They mow our lawn, clean our leaves, trim our bushes, check our sprinklers and, on occasion, provide us advice on how to make our lawn look even better. They also provide very fair pricing for other yard work, such as aeration, planting trees, removing bushes, trimming large trees, etc. I wish they would do a better job of responding to our requests for quotes for additional work around our yard (not covered by monthly service), which is why I docked one star. I think they are very busy because of the great work they do so maybe they just don't need extra small jobs - just wish they would communicate that with us. Owner Jose Ruano and his crew are very customer-service oriented and responsive to requests, if we need something special done. They communicate well; I even email if I won't be around to discuss something in person. And J&J has been very consistent -- they always show up when they're supposed to, even when bad weather must mess up their schedule. Jose and his crew recently helped us replace an patio with a brand new, stamped-concrete patio complemented by stone-veneer-covered patio steps. And, I am more than satisfied! Jose was up front and clear on costs and process, he and his crew always arrived on time, worked diligently, and took pride in their work. Jose also made sure to keep us well informed of options and plans, was extremely patient in answering our questions and helping us understand, and was always courteous and pleasant. When Jose found a grading issue on our job that had affected the old patio and that would have carried over to the new patio, he worked hard to come up with alternatives and solutions. His creativity and resourcefulness allowed us to incorporate the solution in the stone-veneer-covered steps, and also get that done at a very reasonable price. This option delayed our job, which impacted his schedule of other jobs; however, without complaint and with a smile, he deftly juggled his schedule to get us back in. I was so impressed with all the wonderful reviews that I decided to call J & J Gardening for an estimate. An appointment was made and I couldn't wait to meet them to see what they could do for me. I was very disappointed when the appointment came and went and no one came by. They were a no-show. I called about 45 minutes after the scheduled time to see if they were still going to come or not, but no one answered. I did not get a call back until the following morning offering an apology and offering to come by and giving me a percentage discount, but at this point I think it's not worth doing business with a company who does not keep their word or isn't responsible enough to call to postpone or cancel the appointment. :( read more

$200 for 2 people for 1 hour of work. Need i say more? This service is way too expensive. $100 per hour per gardener. That's ridiculous. I hired J&J to do a cleanup of my backyard when I moved into a home. When he did the estimate, he said it would take a few people a few hours to finish the job. When he arrived, it was 2 people, and they worked for 1 hour. When I asked him about that, he said they have tools other gardeners don't have. Still, it was way less work than his estimate. Yes, he was nice, and he did fix a few other things in the backyard, and they did a good job, but the price was way too much. My fault for agreeing to a project based fee rather than hourly fee. Wow, I can't seem to understand where all these 5 star reviews are coming from. We looked up yelp and picked these guys and 6 months later I can only say its a been one disappointment after another. I can't imagine giving them more than 1 star if I know anything about gardening. J & J is your standard mow+blow service, just like any other you can pick off craigslist for around $20 less than their price. Communication: The guy who answers the phone and comes to give an estimate will not be the guy who actually services the lawn. The staff that actually service the lawn will often not understand English, so you have to call the business owner and then hope that your desires get communicated to their workers. In our case this often didn't happen, leaving us frustrated. Weeds and Ivy: They won't bother pulling out or treating weeds in your lawn. They'll just mow it down and pretend its not there, and then 2 months later I find 4 ft wide patches of weed grass in multiple places. When we asked them to pull out ivy, they simply weed-whacked it. They said it would die, but of course it did not, and no matter how many times we asked, they never pulled out the new sprouts of ivy. My wife finally gave up and began weeding the flowerbed herself. Fruit trees: They carelessly whacked some weed around our newly planted cherry tree, chipping off giant pieces of bark. I called to point out the problem and was told it wont happen again. The problem continued, and 1 month later the cherry tree that had started with a 2-inch wide trunk is now only 1-inch where it has lost 4 big chunks and is now dying. Pruning plants/bushes: They seem to only understand the concept of taking a trimmer and rendering things into a box or sphere shape, leaving ugly half-cut leaves all over. Pruning stems/branches to give a more natural look seems an idea lost on them. Blowing debris into the pool: We have a pool in our back yard and the first 4 weeks I was ending up with a filthy swimming pool. I had to tell them twice to stop blowing stuff into it. Things got better since then ... but you'd think that this is a no-brainer: "hmm should I be blowing dead leaves and dirt into this crisp clean pool here?" General carelessness: My wife finally took over the pruning, and left cuttings in a large container to be taken out to the curb by them. Three weeks in a row they knocked the container on to newly planted flowers, which were smashed. After the third week, we moved the container to the front yard, but the flowers on the edge have never recovered. They left the backyard gate open once, and the cat escaped. Days off with no notice: They'll take national holidays off and that may mean 3 weeks of service that month. So while my neighbor's yard was getting serviced on Labor Day, mine wasn't. I called to ask if they'll make it up another day of that week and the answer was "no". Summary: After 6 months I have found that I am having to constantly watch for all kinds of problems in my yards myself, and the only benefit I am getting is a weekly lawn mow. At that point I decided I might as well let them go, and hire the neighbor's son to mow for $15 / week and manage the care myself. read more

They signed up for a grueling job at my home - taking a space that had way too much concrete and trees that had just been cut down and hauled away.... and turning it into a gorgeous oasis. Great gardening service! We needed a quick cleanup to our spring yard (picture weeds out of control everywhere!) and trims to all of the bushes and trees that probably hadn't been cut back in years. J&J was easy to book, had a reasonable price, and did a great, thorough job. Currently renting out a home drawing near the lease termination. Since the rental included landscape, maintenance was part of the leasing agreement. Needed a quick and fast solution to clean up the property which essentially was a years worth of untouched weeds, overgrown rose bushes and dried leaves. I called these guys based on positive reviews. They came out to my house, were very polite, but made it clear they were doing me a favor by giving me a residential estimate. They said they normally just do commercial. Their estimate was twice what I currently pay for half the number of visits per month. I also asked them to estimate some additional work, like putting in bender board, and to send me the estimate via email. They emailed a generic contract, with no amounts filled in, and asked me to sign it! I responded that this seemed like signing a blank check, and to please fill in the amounts and times per month they would come to garden. After two weeks I got the contract back with a bimonthly estimate but no estimate on the additional work. I told them that I was comparing pricing and before canceling my current service and signing up with someone new, I would appreciate understanding how they priced services. That would help me in evaluating whether to go with a new service. -This makes sense...after all, if they are going to be double the price on everything, why should I switch? Of course I didn't tell them that, just to give me a rough estimate on other services so I can compare. That was the last I heard from them. Obviously they aren't interested in bidding services, and must have enough work so that they aren't interested in getting new clients. Based on their lack of response, I give them 2 stars. These guys are the bomb. We first hired them for a massive cleanup -- we're talking stacked layers of dead leaves and foliage, overgrown trees and shrubs, the whole nine yards. They finished the job superbly in a short time and suggested a few more things we should do. We persuaded them to take us on as monthly clients. Since then, they have shown up on time and prepared. We don't need to tell them what needs doing -- they shave down the huge ivy walls, edge the yard, keep an eye on the watering, trim trees with care and thought (somebody knows trees well), and I've never seen a better job of cleanup. We have neighbors' trees that blow leaves all over the place and yet our yard looks like a showpiece for days after these guys are done. For the quality of work they do they are worth every penny. We tried to give these guys a chance. But they don't work weekends are not accomodating at all. I commute so I need advance notice when they are coming during the week (DAY AND TIME) so I can put my dogs inside to not disturb them while the guys work. But they would never give any advance notice or come at the right time. The first and ONLY time they showed up was two hours late "We didn't think you'd be there". That is NOT an excuse ! We agreed to pay the outrageous price of $100/mo hoping they would do a good job. Still left piles of foxtails and debris everywhere just like the cheaper $60/mo service we had before! Well, after reading all the great reviews here on yelp, I called J&J right away and spoke with someone to confirm if they were willing to come down to Gilroy and explained I needed weeds cleaned up and some sod put in and about 20 plants planted. They said yes, so I gave them my address and phone number and set up an appt for the following week (tonight). And the appointment time has come & gone (they are 30 mins late.) I called on Friday of last week and Jose answered the phone and was very polite and spoke excellent English and was very professional. Jose and Benjamin came out on Friday night to give us an estimate, and came on Saturday and cleared out the backyard (which was FULL of weeds) in about 2 hours! The yard looked great! They gave us a quote of $150 for the front and backyards, and it was sooo worth it! They also gave us a quote for bi-monthly service ($70) and my husband and I felt that it was very reasonable. I left a message with the specifics and Jose returned my call immediately. They were able to get the job done within 3 days! The yard looked fantastic. They mowed the front and back lawn, cleaned up all of the messy weeds, and also trimmed a large, unruly tree. The price was right, and I was extremely pleased with the results.
